Need for Speed Heat is the closest follow-up if what you loved in Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit was escalating police pressure wrapped around illegal street races. Choose Burnout Paradise Remastered for the purest arcade speed and crash spectacle, Forza Horizon 5 for a huge open world and varied events, Wreckfest for realistic-looking metal-bending damage, The Crew Motorfest for a broad car-culture festival, or Need for Speed Unbound for a newer street-racing game that includes a documented Hot Pursuit mode.

At a glance: which game should you play?

What makes a good Hot Pursuit alternative?

Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit is unusual because its appeal is not just fast cars. It combines high-speed roads, dramatic takedowns, a clear police-versus-racer fantasy and short events that make every mistake immediately costly. The best substitute depends on which part you want to preserve.

  • Police escalation: You want pursuits that become more dangerous as you drive, rather than a race that ends when you cross the finish line.
  • Immediate arcade handling: Cars should be exciting at speed without requiring a realistic racing-school approach.
  • Freedom between events: Open roads, shortcuts and unscripted encounters matter if you liked choosing your own route.
  • Contact and spectacle: Some players want police takedowns; others mainly want crashes, stunts and dramatic recoveries.
  • Progression and variety: A large car roster, tuning, championships, challenges or user-created events can keep an arcade racer active after the first weekend.

No comparable named score or independent performance test is established for these games in the official material available for this guide. The recommendations below therefore use each game’s documented modes, setting and design emphasis rather than invented rankings.

Need for Speed Heat: the closest police-and-street-racing substitute

Start here if the defining memory of Hot Pursuit is seeing a routine race turn into a desperate escape. EA describes Need for Speed Heat as a race experience in which you “hustle by day, and risk it all by night” while facing the city’s rogue police force and fighting toward the street-racing elite. That day/night structure gives the police a practical role in progression instead of treating them as occasional scenery.

Burnout Paradise Remastered (Xbox One)
  • Explore Paradise City with Friends: Burn rubber and shred metal across the open roads of Paradise City while discovering jumps, stunts, and shortcuts. Blaze your path to glory in unique events, using your knowledge of the city to find the fastest routes and get the drop on rivals. Wreck your friends online and collect their mugshots, or join forces to demolish hundreds of online challenges
  • Break the Rules and Crash Anywhere at Any Time: Throw out that driver's handbook and set speed and destruction records all over town. Track how many you own, and prove your demolition dominance against your friends. Send your car launching, spinning, and scraping through the city, smashing through traffic and leaving a very expensive trail of wreckage in your rear view
  • The Definitive Burnout Paradise Experience: The remaster delivers the complete original game and all additional downloadable content ever released with a range of technical enhancements for greater visual fidelity and authenticity, including high resolution textures and more. It plays natively in 1080p on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles, and in stunning 4K at 60fps on the PlayStation 4 Pro and Xbox One X.

Why the pursuit loop feels familiar

Daytime activities let you build reputation and compete in a more controlled environment. Night racing raises the stakes: police pressure can interrupt your route, force improvised escapes and make the decision to continue carrying risk. The important similarity is not a particular gadget or track; it is the constant calculation of whether another event is worth the pursuit that may follow.

Where it differs from Hot Pursuit

Heat is primarily a street-racing progression game, not a dedicated police-versus-racer campaign. Its identity comes from balancing money, reputation and escalating attention across an open city. If you specifically want to swap sides and run police equipment against racers in every event, this is not a one-to-one recreation. It is the strongest alternative for the pressure, atmosphere and illegal-racing fantasy.

Cars, customization and practical details

The game is available on PC, PlayStation and Xbox and was released on November 8, 2019. The street-racing format makes customization and tuning part of the progression rather than an optional garage screen. Expect to make decisions about how a car behaves on different event types, then judge whether a setup that wins races is also survivable when a pursuit starts.

Choose Heat when…

  • You want police to be an active threat during an open-world progression loop.
  • You prefer street-racing atmosphere over organized festival activities.
  • You want the clearest modern answer to “what should I play after Hot Pursuit?”

Burnout Paradise Remastered: the purest arcade-speed and destruction pick

Choose Burnout Paradise Remastered when the police are less important to you than acceleration, near misses, jumps and spectacular wrecks. EA calls Paradise City an “ultimate driving playground” and presents the remaster as a celebration of high-octane stunts and wanton destruction. That focus makes it the most direct alternative to the physical spectacle of Hot Pursuit, even though it does not center on police role-play.

What you do in Paradise City

The open city is designed for roaming rather than selecting every activity from a conventional menu. You can discover routes, launch into stunt opportunities and trigger events while learning the road network through repeated high-speed runs. The environment is part of the game: ramps, shortcuts and traffic are tools for creating a better line or a bigger moment.

Burnout Paradise Remastered - Nintendo Switch
  • The Burnout franchise races onto Nintendo Switch for the first time ever
  • Tear up the town from hectic downtown avenues to wild mountain road.
  • Relive the high-octane stunts and wanton destruction of one of the greatest arcade racers.
  • Burnout paradise remastered is the ultimate driving playground for you and your friends to play online or on-the-go.
  • Fully optimized for the Nintendo Switch in 60 FPS.

Why the crashes matter

Crashes are not merely penalties that reset the race. They are a visual and mechanical reward system. A successful takedown, near miss or stunt can be as satisfying as a clean finish, and the risk-reward rhythm encourages you to keep attacking the road instead of driving conservatively. If your favorite Hot Pursuit memories involve a rival spinning into a barrier, Paradise makes that kind of contact the main event.

Availability and limitations

The remaster is available on PC through the EA app or Steam, as well as PlayStation and Xbox. Its remastered release date was August 20, 2018. It does not provide the same structured police campaign as Hot Pursuit, and its open-ended design can feel less guided if you prefer a clearly signposted sequence of championships.

Choose Burnout Paradise Remastered when…

  • You want immediate arcade handling and a city built around stunts.
  • You measure fun by takedowns, jumps and wrecks rather than simulation accuracy.
  • You are happy to create your own route through an open playground.

Forza Horizon 5: the best open-world variety pick

Forza Horizon 5 is the right choice when you want the freedom of an open road but also need a deep supply of different activities. Its official description sets the game in an evolving Mexico and highlights hundreds of cars. The key distinction from a focused pursuit racer is breadth: the game supports many ways to compete, explore and customize rather than asking every event to deliver the same police-chase fantasy.

More than conventional races

The documented activity list includes Horizon Arcade challenges, standard races, Drift events, Games, The Eliminator, Hide & Seek and player-created EventLab content. That range lets you switch from a normal checkpoint route to a cooperative challenge, a survival-style event or a community-built scenario without leaving the same world.

Why it works for Hot Pursuit fans

It preserves the pleasure of choosing a fast car and immediately finding roads on which to use it. Mexico supplies long drives, varied terrain and a large event map, while the car roster and customization support experimentation. The trade-off is focus: police pressure is not the defining loop, so a player seeking constant pursuit tension should begin with Heat instead.

Burnout Paradise Remastered Switch Edition (Nintendo Switch)
  • The Definitive Burnout experience: fully remastered and meticulously recreated, Burnout Paradise remastered delivers the complete original game and all additional main DLC packs ever released, including the cops and Robbers Pack, legendary cars, Burnout bikes, and big surf island, with new locations, challenges, and vehicles to discover
  • The ultimate driving playground: throw out that driver's handbook and blaze a path of speed and destruction all over town; Send your car launching, spinning, and scraping through the city, smashing through traffic and leaving a very expensive trail of wreckage in your rearview; Wreck your friends online or join forces to demolish hundreds of online challenges
  • Full-throttle graphics: optimized for Nintendo Switch, with high resolution textures and more, Burnout Paradise remastered delivers a range of technical enhancements for greater visual fidelity and ease-of-play, ready to Wreck in glorious 60 FPS

Online and creative activity

EventLab is especially useful for players who exhaust standard events quickly. User-created content can change the shape and rules of an activity, while Horizon Arcade and the other named modes provide repeatable alternatives to traditional racing. Because the official description does not establish a single platform list here, check the current edition’s store page before buying and confirm which online functions require an active subscription on your console.

Choose Forza Horizon 5 when…

  • You want hundreds of cars and a large world that supports many event types.
  • You value repeatable multiplayer, challenge and creator-made content.
  • You want to spend as much time exploring and customizing as racing.

Wreckfest: the best full-contact crash racer

Wreckfest is for the player who wants the car itself to suffer. THQ Nordic describes it as taking full-contact racing to the limit, and its official feature list includes epic crashes, demolition derbies, intersections, oncoming traffic, upgradeable armor and performance parts, multiplayer, challenge modes and career progression.

Damage is the strategy

In a conventional arcade racer, contact usually means losing speed. In Wreckfest, deciding where and when to make contact can be the central tactical question. Armor upgrades can help a vehicle survive abuse, while performance parts force you to balance durability against speed. The result is less about evading every object and more about deciding which impact you can afford.

Events beyond ordinary laps

Demolition derbies provide a direct destruction objective, while intersection and oncoming-traffic events turn route reading into a survival problem. Career progression gives those unusual formats context, and challenge modes offer additional goals when you do not want a standard race. Multiplayer extends the same contact-heavy design to human opponents, where unpredictable collisions become part of the competition.

How it compares with Hot Pursuit

There is no police-chase fantasy here. The replacement for pursuit tension is mechanical damage: a bad collision can compromise the rest of an event, and a strong hit can change the order immediately. Pick it for metal-bending chaos, not for sirens, gadgets or a police-versus-racer campaign.

  • This remaster includes the 8 main DLC packs from the Year of Paradise, including the Big Surf Island update, meticulously recreated and ready to wreck!

Choose Wreckfest when…

  • You want visible consequences for every major impact.
  • Demolition derbies and unusual traffic events sound better than a clean racing line.
  • You prefer career, challenge and multiplayer progression built around contact.

The Crew Motorfest: the broad car-culture festival option

The Crew Motorfest combines an open Hawaiian setting with a festival structure. Ubisoft describes it as an “everlasting festival of car culture,” with street races in Honolulu, off-road volcano routes, tracks, thematic Playlists and hundreds of cars. It is a strong choice when you want a large, varied package rather than one dominant mechanic.

A world built around themed Playlists

Playlists organize activities around a theme, helping the large map feel more directed than a completely free-form sandbox. You can move from city streets to volcanic off-road routes and then to dedicated tracks without changing games. That range makes Motorfest suitable for players whose interest shifts between disciplines.

Chase Squad and changing service features

The documented Chase Squad feature adds a pursuit-flavored activity, but it should not be treated as a permanent specification. Motorfest is supported as an ongoing service, so playlists, seasonal content and online requirements can change. Verify the current edition and service terms before purchase if those features are the reason you are choosing it.

Platforms

The official page lists PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One, PC and Nintendo Switch 2. The exact feature set can depend on platform and edition, especially for online activities, so check the current platform listing for your system.

Choose The Crew Motorfest when…

Need for Speed Unbound: a modern street racer with Hot Pursuit mode

Need for Speed Unbound is the alternative to try when you want a newer street-racing presentation and a documented return of the Hot Pursuit concept. EA’s official page lists Lockups, customizable cars, Free Roam and PVP. Its Vol. 8 update brought back Hot Pursuit mode, described as returning “the original thrill of the chase.”

  • Blaze your path to glory in unique events, using your knowledge of the city to find the fastest routes and get the drop on rivals
  • Wreck your friends online and collect their mugshots, or join forces to demolish hundreds of online challenges

What the Hot Pursuit mode changes

The mode matters because it directly addresses the feature many players miss: structured pursuit competition rather than police merely appearing in free roam. It gives Unbound a closer conceptual link to Hot Pursuit than most modern open-world racers, while the base game remains a street-racing title with its own visual style and progression.

Time-sensitive support caveat

EA stated in a February 3, 2025 news item that there would be no more updates. That announcement means you should treat the mode list, matchmaking population, seasonal availability and online-service status as time-sensitive. The game remains a reasonable pick for its documented features, but do not assume future content or support will expand.

Platforms and modes

EA provides PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Epic purchase links. Free Roam and PVP give you ways to drive outside the main progression, while Lockups and customization support the garage-and-street-race loop. If you want a current long-term live-service roadmap, choose another game; if you want a recent street racer that explicitly restored Hot Pursuit mode, this is the targeted choice.

Choose Need for Speed Unbound when…

  • You want the newest game in this list with an explicitly documented Hot Pursuit mode.
  • You prefer stylized street racing, Free Roam and PVP.
  • You understand that EA announced no further updates on February 3, 2025.

Decision guide by the feature you care about most

If your priority is… Start with… Why
Police pressure during street-racing progression Need for Speed Heat Its day/night loop makes escalating police attention a central risk.
A mode explicitly called Hot Pursuit Need for Speed Unbound Vol. 8 restored Hot Pursuit mode, subject to time-sensitive online support.
Stunts, speed and open-world wrecks Burnout Paradise Remastered Paradise City is built as a driving playground where destruction is a headline feature.
Many cars and many kinds of events Forza Horizon 5 Its documented activities span races, Drift, Games, The Eliminator, Hide & Seek, Horizon Arcade and EventLab.
Maximum contact and visible damage Wreckfest Demolition derbies, damage, armor upgrades and full-contact racing define the experience.
Festival atmosphere and varied terrain The Crew Motorfest Its Hawaiian map connects city, volcano, track and themed Playlist activities.

How to choose without buying the wrong kind of racer

Pick the pursuit game, not just the fastest game

If sirens, escape routes and rising pressure are the reason you remember Hot Pursuit, prioritize Heat or Unbound. The other four games can deliver speed and spectacle, but neither their main progression nor their defining challenge is the same police-versus-racer loop.

Decide whether you want an open world or an event machine

Heat, Burnout Paradise Remastered, Forza Horizon 5 and Motorfest all make free-roaming important, although they organize activities differently. Wreckfest is more event and track focused, with unusual formats replacing a large exploratory city. Choose based on whether you want to discover roads between events or jump straight into a specific challenge.

Separate cinematic crashes from mechanical damage

Burnout Paradise Remastered treats crashes as arcade spectacle. Wreckfest makes damage part of the competitive calculation through armor and performance upgrades. Heat, Unbound, Forza Horizon 5 and Motorfest offer contact and visual impact, but their documented selling points are pursuit, variety or car culture rather than a damage system.

Check online and edition requirements

Before purchase, confirm the exact platform edition, whether multiplayer or creator content requires a console subscription, and whether the game still receives the seasonal or online content you expect. This matters most for Motorfest, whose service features can change, and Unbound, for which EA announced no further updates in February 2025.
