GasBuddy is the best dedicated diesel-price comparison app. It lets you compare nearby stations and sort results by price or distance. Choose Waze when navigation and a fuel stop must stay in one route-planning app, Upside when a claimed cashback offer lowers the effective price, and Mudflap when you operate a diesel truck or small fleet and want app-based discounts at participating truck stops.
No app guarantees that its number is the price you will see at the pump. GasBuddy and Waze display station-price reports, Waze relies on community updates, Upside displays an offer rather than a lower posted pump price, and Mudflap applies discounts only within its participating network. Check the app immediately before paying, then compare the final net cost with any loyalty or fleet discount you already use.
The best app depends on what “cheaper diesel” means to you
There are two different ways an app can reduce your fuel bill:
- Find a lower posted pump price. GasBuddy and Waze are primarily comparison tools. Their station listings help you decide where to stop, but the displayed price can become outdated or differ from the sign at the forecourt.
- Reduce the amount you effectively pay. Upside presents a cashback offer that must be claimed before payment. Mudflap applies an in-app diesel discount at participating truck stops and processes payment through its app.
That distinction matters on a long drive. A station that is 8 cents cheaper on the sign may still cost more after an out-of-route detour, while a cashback offer may leave the pump price unchanged but reduce your final cost after the transaction is confirmed.

GasBuddy: the best dedicated diesel-price finder
Use GasBuddy when your first question is, “Which nearby station has the lowest diesel price?” Its help center says station results can be sorted by Price or Distance, and its supported-fuel list includes Diesel. That makes it the most direct tool in this group for comparing pumps around your current location or destination.
How to compare diesel prices
- Open the station-finder view and set the fuel type to Diesel rather than leaving the default fuel selection unchanged.
- Search the area where you intend to stop. For a trip, repeat the search around the next practical stopping area instead of assuming the cheapest station near your starting point will remain convenient later.
- Sort by Price to see the lowest reported diesel prices first. Switch to Distance when a small price difference is not worth leaving your route.
- Compare several nearby listings, not just the first result. A station with the lowest report may be farther away, harder to enter with a trailer, or outside the direction of travel.
- Before turning off the road, check the station sign or ask the attendant if the displayed price is unclear. A reported price can age between the time another driver submitted it and your arrival.
When GasBuddy is the right choice
- You drive a car, pickup, van or light-duty diesel vehicle and want a broad local comparison.
- You care more about the posted pump price than about cashback paperwork.
- You want to choose between the nearest station and a cheaper one a few minutes farther away.
GasBuddy is less useful as a complete trip planner. Use your normal navigation app to judge traffic, road access and the cost of leaving the route, then use the price comparison to choose among feasible stops.
Waze: fuel-price reports inside route planning
Waze is the strongest option when the fuel search must remain connected to an active drive. Waze says users can search Gas stations, sort results by Price or Distance, and see community-updated prices for fuel types including Diesel. It also supports adding a selected station as a quick stop along the existing route.

Find diesel without abandoning your route
- Start or load the route you plan to drive.
- Search for Gas stations from the route interface.
- Set the fuel type to Diesel where the fuel filter is available.
- Sort by Price when saving money is the priority, or by Distance when the tank is low and time matters more.
- Review the station’s position relative to the route. Select it as a quick stop so Waze can include the detour in its navigation.
- At arrival, compare the physical pump or roadside sign with the in-app report before committing to a fill-up.
How reliable is a Waze price?
Waze describes these figures as community-updated fuel prices. They are useful signals, not guaranteed live quotations. A station may have changed its price after the last report, or a report may represent a different grade or transaction condition than the one you need. Treat a large apparent saving as a reason to verify, not as permission to make a long detour without checking.
Waze documents one important operating limitation: editing fuel prices is unavailable in Android Auto, Android Automotive and CarPlay. If you need to correct a price, use the Waze phone app rather than trying to edit it from the vehicle display. This restriction does not prevent you from using a listed station for navigation, but it can slow the flow of fresh reports from drivers who only use the in-car interface.

Upside: calculate the net price after diesel cashback
Upside is different from a price-comparison app. Its support materials describe it as a free app that helps users earn cash back on purchases such as gas, groceries and dining. For diesel, filter the available offers to Diesel, claim an offer before paying, and complete the transaction according to the offer’s requirements. Cashback is added after the transaction rather than reducing the number shown on the pump.
The correct way to compare an Upside offer
- Search for the station where you are considering buying diesel.
- Apply the Diesel filter so you do not mistake a gasoline offer for an eligible diesel offer.
- Read the location and offer details, then claim the offer before beginning payment. Claiming it afterward may not qualify the purchase.
- Record the posted pump price and the advertised cashback amount or rate.
- Calculate the effective price: pump price minus expected cashback. Keep the calculation separate from any loyalty, fleet or card discount, because those programs may have their own eligibility rules.
- Pay and retain the receipt or digital transaction record until the cashback is credited.
When cashback beats a lower pump price
Suppose Station A posts a lower diesel price but has no offer, while Station B posts a higher price and has an eligible cashback offer. Station B may be cheaper after the cashback, but only if the offer applies to your purchase and the added driving cost is small. Compare the final net price per gallon and the total cost of the detour, not the offer headline alone.

An offer can disappear, change value or exclude a station that looks nearby on the map. Check the offer immediately before purchase and do not treat a previously seen offer as a standing discount.
Mudflap: a specialized option for truckers and small fleets
Mudflap targets commercial diesel use rather than general fuel shopping. Its app listing and product site describe instant diesel discounts, app-based payment and a network of more than 3,600 U.S. truck stops (the figure stated on its 2026 product page and app listing). That focus makes it more relevant to owner-operators, contractors with diesel work trucks and small fleet managers than to a driver who only wants the cheapest neighborhood station.
A practical Mudflap workflow
- Open the app before entering the truck stop and look for participating locations along your route.
- Check that the location supports the vehicle and fueling pattern you need, especially if you are driving a large truck or pulling a trailer.
- Review the displayed diesel discount and any payment instructions in the app.
- Use the app’s payment flow as directed rather than assuming a discount will be applied to an unrelated payment method.
- Confirm the final transaction amount and keep the receipt for fleet records.
Mudflap’s network size does not mean every truck stop in every region participates. Availability is location-dependent, and the app’s discount is useful only where the station is both in the network and practical for your route. For a mixed fleet or a personal vehicle, compare the app’s final price with a nearby posted price instead of assuming the specialized network is always cheaper.

Choose the right app for your driving situation
Private driver making a local fill-up
Start with GasBuddy. Set Diesel, sort by Price, and compare the lowest report with stations close enough that the detour will not erase the saving. If you already use Waze for navigation, its fuel layer can provide the same basic decision without switching apps.

Long-distance driver planning a stop
Use Waze to keep the station search tied to your route. Sort by Distance when the tank is approaching its safe range; sort by Price when you have enough fuel to choose among several stops. Use GasBuddy as a second check when the price difference is significant or when you are comparing multiple towns ahead.
Driver who is willing to complete an offer
Use Upside after identifying practical stations. Claim the diesel offer before paying, then compare the effective price after cashback with the posted prices in GasBuddy or Waze. The comparison is incomplete until you account for the cashback timing and the extra miles required to reach the participating station.
Owner-operator or small fleet
Check Mudflap first for truck-stop coverage and app-based diesel discounts, then use Waze or another navigation tool to assess access and routing. GasBuddy can still be useful as an independent view of nearby posted prices, particularly when you are outside Mudflap’s participating network.
How to avoid false savings
Do not compare unlike numbers
A Waze or GasBuddy figure is a reported pump price. An Upside figure is an offer that may be credited later. A Mudflap figure is a discount available through a participating app-payment transaction. Put all options on the same basis before choosing: final cost per gallon, total gallons, and the distance or time required to reach the station.

Account for route cost
A cheaper station is not automatically the cheaper stop. Include additional miles, traffic, tolls, idling and the risk of missing a convenient access point. For a truck, also consider turning space, entrance direction and whether the stop can accommodate the vehicle; a price-only ranking cannot answer those operational questions.
Verify at the station
Prices and offers change by location and time. Community reports can age, and promotional cashback offers can change or disappear. Look at the roadside sign and pump before starting the transaction. If the price or offer does not match what the app showed, decide whether the difference is still worthwhile rather than filling up on an assumption.
Keep records when money is credited later
For cashback or fleet accounting, retain the receipt and transaction confirmation until the expected credit or discount appears. This gives you a reference if the amount is missing or the purchase was not recognized as eligible.

- Set the fuel requirement. Choose Diesel explicitly and decide how much range you need before stopping.
- Find feasible stations. Search GasBuddy or Waze and remove options that require an impractical detour.
- Check the payment method. If using Upside, confirm and claim the offer before paying. If using Mudflap, confirm that the truck stop supports its app payment.
- Calculate the real saving. Compare pump price, expected cashback or discount, and the cost of additional driving.
- Verify and document. Check the physical price at arrival and save the receipt when a later cashback credit or business record matters.
Common problems and fixes
The cheapest listing is no longer available
Switch from a price-first sort to a distance-first sort and compare the remaining practical stations. Treat the stale listing as an outdated report rather than driving farther in pursuit of it.
Waze shows a station but no useful diesel price
Confirm that Diesel is selected and that the station has a community report for that fuel type. If the report is missing or old, use the station for navigation but verify the pump price on arrival or cross-check the area in GasBuddy.

An Upside offer did not produce cashback
Check whether the offer was claimed before payment, whether the station and fuel type matched the offer, and whether the transaction record is available. Keep the receipt while the transaction is being processed. Availability and payout are location-specific, so a nearby offer is not proof that every purchase qualifies.
Mudflap does not show a convenient stop
Search farther along the route and compare the result with ordinary posted-price stations. Mudflap’s network is specialized; being outside a participating location means the app discount cannot be assumed at that stop.
You need to update a Waze price from the car
Move to the phone app. Waze states that fuel-price editing is unavailable in Android Auto, Android Automotive and CarPlay, so the in-car display cannot be used for that correction.

For most drivers, GasBuddy is the best starting point because it is purpose-built for comparing local diesel prices by price or distance. Waze is better when the fuel stop must be added directly to an existing route. Upside can produce the lowest effective price when a claimed diesel cashback offer outweighs a higher pump price, while Mudflap is the most specialized choice for truckers and small fleets using participating U.S. truck stops. Whichever app you choose, make the final decision from the current station price, the actual route and the payment method—not from an old listing or an unclaimed offer.
