For most people, Pl@ntNet is the best first app for identifying a flowering plant from a photograph. It accepts photos of flowers, leaves, fruit, stems, or the whole plant, returns ranked species candidates, and lets you compare regional and community images. For deciding whether that plant is native, use a two-step process: identify it with Pl@ntNet, then submit or search the observation on iNaturalist and verify its status in a regional flora, herbarium, native-plant society, or conservation authority.
Choose Seek by iNaturalist instead when you want a fast, account-free activity on a walk. Choose iNaturalist when expert and community feedback, a lasting observation record, or conservation data matters more than instant results.
Which plant-identification app should you use?
The right choice depends on whether you need a likely name, a confirmed identification, or evidence about local native status. No camera app can establish all three by itself.
| What you need | Best starting point | Why | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Identify a flowering plant from one or more photos | Pl@ntNet | Plant-focused recognition, ranked candidates, reference images, and regional flora tools | A ranked result is a lead, not a guaranteed determination |
| Find out whether a plant is native locally | Pl@ntNet, then iNaturalist and a regional authority | Combines regional candidate lists with community context and authoritative status checking | Neither app alone proves native, introduced, invasive, or cultivated status |
| Explore nature without creating an account | Seek by iNaturalist | No registration, quick camera experience, badges, and challenges | Designed for exploration rather than a reviewed, durable record |
| Build an observation history and request human review | iNaturalist | Automated suggestions can receive community identifications and observations contribute to biodiversity data | Community agreement can take time and still requires careful checking |
Pl@ntNet’s current identification portal says it can identify more than 70,000 species. That is a vendor-stated capability and may change as its database and models are updated. A 2024 peer-reviewed test set reported 86.5% accuracy for Pl@ntNet, but that result applies only to that study’s images and conditions.

How the leading apps identify flowering plants
Pl@ntNet: the strongest all-around plant identifier
Pl@ntNet is the most useful first stop for hikers, gardeners, students, and anyone learning local wildflowers. Open the identification tool, photograph a visible plant part, and review the ranked list of possible species. You can submit one image or several views of the same plant: a flower close-up, a leaf, the stem, fruit, and the plant’s overall form.
The result is intentionally presented as a set of possibilities rather than a single unquestionable answer. Compare the candidate’s reference photographs with your own image, then inspect user-submitted photographs for variation in color, growth stage, and habitat. Pl@ntNet also supports community comparison and validation, which is useful when two closely related species look similar.
Its regional-flora features are particularly valuable for native-plant work. You can explore floras by region and filter by region, species, or theme. A regional list will not automatically label a plant as native, but it narrows the plausible candidates to species recorded in the area and helps reveal names used by local botanists.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Best for: a plant-first workflow, several plausible matches, and regional exploration.
- Use it when: you have clear photographs and want to investigate alternatives rather than accept the first suggestion.
- Remember: the “more than 70,000 species” figure is the identification portal’s current claim, not a guarantee that every regional flowering plant will be recognized.
iNaturalist: the best route to community confirmation and a lasting record
iNaturalist combines automated identification with observations that can be reviewed by its community. You can upload photographs, accept or change the suggested taxon, and receive identifications from other users. The platform also keeps an observation history that can be public or private according to the settings you choose.
Its distinctive value is what happens after identification. iNaturalist states that shared observations become data for scientists and conservationists working to understand and protect nature. That makes it useful for documenting a flowering period, recording a plant in a particular habitat, or contributing evidence about a species’ distribution.
Use iNaturalist when the first automated answer is uncertain, when you need another person to inspect diagnostic details, or when you want a record that can be revisited later. Community review is not the same as official botanical certification: a consensus can still be wrong, especially when the photograph omits the characters needed to separate similar species.
- Best for: human feedback, observation history, and participation in biodiversity recording.
- Use it when: you can provide location and several photographs and are willing to wait for review.
- Native-species caution: an iNaturalist suggestion identifies a taxon; it does not by itself establish whether that taxon is native, introduced, cultivated, or invasive in your locality.
Seek by iNaturalist: the easiest account-free option
Seek is built for immediate outdoor exploration. Point its camera at a living organism and it makes an identification attempt, shows commonly recorded organisms from your area, and uses badges and challenges to encourage continued observation.

Seek’s official description says registration is not required and that it does not collect user data. It generalizes location for suggestions and says precise location is not stored or sent to iNaturalist. That combination makes it a good choice for children, casual walks, classrooms, or anyone who does not want to create an account before trying an app.
The trade-off is purpose. Seek is an exploration-first experience, not the strongest tool for building a reviewed, durable observation record. If you later need community confirmation or a searchable contribution to biodiversity work, move the photographs to iNaturalist with the appropriate privacy settings.
- Best for: low-friction identification attempts during a walk.
- Use it when: no registration and reduced location sharing are priorities.
- Do not expect: a definitive native-status decision or the same observation-history workflow as iNaturalist.
Flora Incognita and LeafSnap: alternatives worth testing locally
Flora Incognita can be useful when its geographic coverage matches your area. A British and Irish botanical review identified Flora Incognita, Pl@ntNet, and iNaturalist among apps that have sometimes achieved better than 80% species accuracy for common plants in published evaluations. “Sometimes” matters: results vary by species, image quality, region, and test design.
LeafSnap is another option for a second opinion. In one peer-reviewed 2024 study test set, LeafSnap reached 86.9% top-1 accuracy. That number cannot be transferred directly to every wildflower, country, camera, or season. Install an alternative when the leading app repeatedly confuses a local genus, then compare the candidates against a regional botanical reference rather than choosing whichever app sounds most certain.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow to find out whether a flowering plant is native
“Native” is a geographic and historical designation, not a visual feature. A plant can be native to one county, introduced in another, and cultivated in a garden elsewhere. Follow this workflow instead of treating an app label as proof.
- Photograph the plant systematically. Take a close image of the flower, a clear leaf image showing arrangement and edges, the stem, the whole-plant habit, and fruit or seed heads if present. Include the habitat, such as woodland edge, wetland, roadside, lawn, or dune.
- Run the images through Pl@ntNet. Submit more than one plant part when possible. Save the top candidates rather than recording only the first-ranked name.
- Check the regional setting. Select the closest available region or flora and compare each candidate with the app’s regional and user photographs. Note differences in flower count, leaf shape, flowering season, and growth form.
- Seek community review on iNaturalist. Upload the observation with the date, approximate location, habitat, and diagnostic photographs. Keep the location private or generalized if the plant is rare or your privacy requires it.
- Verify status with an authoritative local source. Check a regional flora, herbarium database, native-plant society, botanical garden, extension service, or conservation authority. Look for separate entries for native, introduced, naturalized, invasive, and cultivated status.
- Record uncertainty. If authorities disagree or the identification remains at genus level, preserve that uncertainty. Do not describe the plant as native, edible, medicinal, or safe solely because an app supplied a species name.
How accurate are plant-identification apps?
Accuracy is conditional. The same app can perform well on a common, fully flowering plant photographed in good light and poorly on a partially open flower, a damaged leaf, a hybrid, or a species absent from its strongest regional training data. Camera angle, shadows, background clutter, growth stage, and whether the image shows the diagnostic part all affect the result.
What published figures actually show
The following numbers come from a peer-reviewed 2024 study test set. They are top-1 results for that test set, not guarantees for every flowering plant or geography.

| App | Reported top-1 accuracy | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| LeafSnap | 86.9% | Performance on the study’s selected images and evaluation method |
| Pl@ntNet | 86.5% | Performance on the same study test set, not a universal field success rate |
| iNaturalist | 65.6% | Automated suggestion performance in that study; community review is a separate step |
A separate review by the British and Irish flora community reported that Flora Incognita, Pl@ntNet, and iNaturalist have sometimes exceeded 80% species accuracy for common plants in published evaluations. Different studies use different species lists, regions, image sources, and scoring rules, so percentages from separate papers should not be treated as a league table.
Why a ranked answer is safer than a confident-looking answer
Pl@ntNet explicitly returns ranked possibilities. That format exposes uncertainty and gives you alternatives to test against the photograph. iNaturalist adds another layer: automated suggestions can be revised through community identifications. A result becomes more credible when the image contains the characters needed for the species-level decision and independent references agree.
How to improve your own results
- Photograph in even daylight and avoid strong shadows or blown-out highlights.
- Fill one frame with the flower, then take separate frames for leaves, stem, fruit, and the whole plant.
- Include both sides of a leaf when surface texture or venation may matter.
- Keep the camera parallel to the subject for close-ups so shape is not distorted.
- Remove visual distractions such as fingers, labels, or neighboring flowers from the diagnostic frame.
- Use the plant’s location and habitat as supporting evidence, never as a substitute for a visible diagnostic feature.
- Compare several candidates and read the descriptions before accepting a species name.
Privacy, accounts, and observation records
Account requirements differ. Seek says no registration is involved and that precise location is not stored or sent to iNaturalist. Pl@ntNet allows identification without requiring an account for the basic task, while its account features unlock saving and organizing observations. iNaturalist is designed around observations and community interaction, so review its visibility controls before posting sensitive locations.
Location privacy deserves special care for rare plants, private property, children’s activities, and places you visit regularly. Use generalized or obscured coordinates where the platform offers them, and avoid posting a recognizable address in the description. Privacy settings may change as apps are updated; check the current in-app wording before submitting.
Safety: identification is not permission to use a plant
Do not eat, brew, apply, or feed a plant to a pet or child because an app produced a plausible name. Edible and poisonous species can look alike, and a correct species name may still leave questions about the plant part, growth stage, contamination, preparation, or local law. For a consequential decision, confirm the identification with a qualified local botanist, herbarium, extension service, or authoritative regional flora and use a dedicated toxicology or medical service when poisoning is possible.
The same caution applies to gardening and conservation. A plant identified as attractive or locally recorded is not automatically suitable for a garden, harmless to wildlife, or legal to collect. Verify invasive status, collection rules, and habitat restrictions with local authorities.
Which app is best for common situations?
You found an unknown garden flower
Start with Pl@ntNet and photograph the flower, leaves, and whole plant. Garden cultivars and hybrids may not resolve cleanly to a named variety, so accept a genus-level result when the evidence does not support more precision.

You are surveying a meadow or woodland
Use Pl@ntNet’s regional tools to generate candidates, then create iNaturalist observations for plants that matter to your survey. Add habitat and date information so later reviewers can distinguish a wild population from a planted specimen.
You are walking with children
Use Seek for the account-free, badge-based experience. Treat every result as a learning prompt, not a safety judgment, and do not allow tasting or handling of unknown plants.

The app gives several unrelated species
Retake the photograph with the flower isolated, then submit a leaf and whole-plant view separately. Check whether the plant is actually in bloom and whether another object, such as a neighboring flower, is dominating the frame. Compare the candidates’ regional ranges before choosing one.
The result stops at genus level
That may be the correct level of certainty. Photograph the features used to separate species—leaf arrangement, stem hair, flower center, bracts, fruit, or seed head—and request community review. Do not upgrade a genus-level answer simply because one species is common in your area.

One-click scans. No signup required.
The suggested species is not listed in your region
Check the app’s region setting and spelling first. Then compare the result with a regional flora. A non-local suggestion can reflect a cultivated plant, a database gap, an introduced population, or a recognition error.

You need an answer but cannot create an account
Use Seek for an account-free attempt or use Pl@ntNet’s basic identification workflow without saving an observation. For community confirmation and a durable record, an iNaturalist account and its privacy controls are required.
Two apps disagree
Keep both candidate lists, inspect the diagnostic differences, and add better photographs. Look for agreement from a regional authority or qualified botanist. Do not average the names or select the app with the higher confidence wording; the evidence in the image matters more than presentation style.
Bottom line
Use Pl@ntNet first for a flowering-plant photograph, especially when regional flora context and multiple candidate species are useful. Add iNaturalist when you want community confirmation, a lasting observation record, or a contribution to conservation data. Pick Seek for quick, account-free exploration. For native status, always complete the final verification with a regional botanical authority; no identification app can replace that local check.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I identify a flowering plant without creating an account?
Yes. Seek is explicitly designed without registration, and Pl@ntNet’s basic identification workflow can be used without saving an account-based observation. Community review and a durable public or private record are iNaturalist-style features, so those require its account workflow.
Is Pl@ntNet or iNaturalist better for wild plants?
Pl@ntNet is usually the better first identifier because it is plant-focused, returns ranked candidates, and offers regional flora exploration. iNaturalist is better when you want community review, a lasting observation record, or conservation value. Using both gives the strongest practical workflow.
Can an app tell me whether a wildflower is native?
Not reliably by itself. An app can suggest the species and show regional records, but native, introduced, naturalized, and invasive status depends on locality and history. Verify the identified plant with a regional flora, herbarium, native-plant society, botanical garden, extension service, or conservation authority.
Why do plant apps disagree about the same photograph?
They use different training data, regional coverage, taxonomic databases, and result formats. Improve the evidence with separate flower, leaf, stem, fruit, and whole-plant photographs, then compare the candidates with a local botanical reference or community review.
