For UK drivers, start with Fuel Finder-powered services such as PetrolPrices.com or RAC Fuel Watch if comparing prices is your main goal; use Google Maps or Waze if you want to find a priced station and navigate there in one app. There is no proven universal winner: the best choice depends on your postcode, fuel type, how recently prices were updated and whether you prefer a dedicated comparison service or a navigation app.
Which app shows the cheapest petrol near me?
There is no single app that can guarantee the cheapest pump price for every location. The UK government lists a range of consumer services using fuel-price data, including Confused.com, DriveScore, Fuel Finder UK, Fuel Spy, Google Maps, MotorMouth, PetrolPrices.com, RAC Fuel Watch and Waze. Availability and the way prices are displayed can vary, so compare options that cover your area and make the price update time visible.
Google Maps began showing near-real-time UK petrol and diesel prices on 8 October 2026, drawing on Fuel Finder data. The government said on that date that the data reflected around 99% of fuel sold on UK roads; that is the share of fuel sold represented in the dataset, not the proportion of stations signed up. An earlier government factsheet reported that around 90% of petrol stations had signed up at the time it was published, a different measure and date.

The government estimates that a car-owning household could save around £40 a year by shopping around. That is an estimate, not a guaranteed saving: local price gaps, the fuel you need and the distance to a cheaper forecourt all affect whether a detour is worthwhile. The available sources do not establish a universal break-even distance.

Dedicated comparison services
PetrolPrices.com and RAC Fuel Watch are examples of services where finding local prices is central to the task. PetrolPrices says it combines Fuel Finder with other sources, and that as of April 2026 Fuel Finder data was not live across all UK stations. Treat that as the provider’s description of its own data mix, and use the timestamp shown for the station you are considering.
Navigation apps
Google Maps and Waze can be convenient when you also need directions. Google Maps’ UK fuel-price display launched on 8 October 2026, so its availability is recent and may differ by app version, location or listing. Check the app directly for the fuel types and station prices shown in your area.

Other UK-listed options
The government’s list also includes Confused.com, DriveScore, Fuel Finder UK, Fuel Spy and MotorMouth. Compare their local coverage, update timestamps and any sign-in requirements before relying on one as your main checker; features and access conditions can vary.
Can I find diesel prices near me?
Yes. UK Fuel Finder data covers prices by fuel type, and government guidance says it also includes station address, operator, brand, amenities, opening hours and update timestamps. In the app or service you choose, select diesel rather than assuming a station’s displayed petrol price applies to it. The same check matters for other fuel grades if your vehicle requires one.

Are fuel app prices up to date?
UK forecourts must report a fuel-price change within 30 minutes under Fuel Finder. That is a reporting requirement, not a guarantee that every app has refreshed its display or that the listed price has changed recently. Check the individual station’s last-updated time before setting off. A price that is a day or two old may simply mean the station has not changed its price in that period, according to PetrolPrices.
The government’s public Fuel Finder data is available to third-party services. Its CSV download is updated twice a day, while an API supports integrations; those publication routes do not mean every consumer app updates on the same schedule. Treat a displayed price as a useful lead, not proof of what you will pay on arrival.

How to choose between fuel-price apps
- Coverage: Check that the service shows stations around your usual routes and the fuel type you need. Fuel Finder availability expanded through 2026, but a provider may combine official data with other sources.
- Timestamp: Prefer a listing that makes its last update easy to see. A low price with a stale or unclear timestamp is less useful than a current price you can verify.
- Workflow: Choose a dedicated comparison tool if sorting or scanning prices is the priority; choose a navigation app if finding a station and routing to it in one place matters more.
- Price conditions: Check whether a price depends on cash, debit, a loyalty card or an offer. Where relevant, calculate a discount separately from the posted pump price and read its eligibility terms.
- Access: Some services may require sign-in for certain features. Check what is available without an account before making an app your routine choice.
How to use an app without making a costly detour
- Set the location and fuel type. Search your current area or route, and choose the fuel your vehicle uses.
- Compare nearby stations and timestamps. Check the displayed price and the last-update time rather than choosing solely by the lowest number.
- Compare the saving with the extra journey. Consider how far out of the way the cheaper station is and whether the price difference is meaningful for the amount you plan to buy. There is no one break-even distance that applies to every driver.
- Check any conditions before you go. Confirm whether the price requires a particular payment method, account, membership or promotion.
- Recheck before leaving if the listing is old. A displayed price is not a guarantee of the pump price when you arrive.
Fuel-price apps outside the UK
Fuel-price services are country- and region-specific. If you are outside the UK, check your local government or motoring-club service first. In Australia, options vary by state and territory and include FuelWatch, FuelCheck, MyFuel NT and FuelCheck TAS, alongside motoring-association, commercial and navigation apps. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission found more than 40 free-to-use fuel-price apps and websites in a market search covering the first half of 2024.

For the United States, GasBuddy is one example of a service with cash-price filtering at some stations; its help page says users can select cash or debit discounts in search where participating stations offer them. Confirm the terms at the station, because such a price is not necessarily available to every customer.

Why Fuel Finder data is not one official consumer app
Fuel Finder is a UK price-reporting scheme and public data source, not a single official app that drivers must use. The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero describes the data as including current prices by fuel type, station details, amenities, opening hours and timestamps. Third-party services can use that data in different ways, which is why coverage, display and refresh timing can differ between apps.
