For most Indian residents, the right choice depends on the legal route behind the app, not the app interface. India-focused services such as INDmoney are designed around Indian remittance and reporting workflows; an IFSC-linked service such as Groww can offer a simpler domestic experience when new US-stock accounts are open; and a direct international broker such as Interactive Brokers is aimed at investors who want broad market access and detailed pricing. Compare the broker, custodian, funding path, foreign-exchange cost, tax documents and withdrawal process before comparing screens or features.
This guide reflects provider information checked on 17 October 2026. US-market availability, fees, LRS and TCS procedures, tax rules and investor-protection arrangements can change, so verify the live tariff and account terms immediately before sending money.
Which route is best for an Indian resident?
There are three practical routes for buying US shares from India:
Quick wins for a faster PC:

|---|---|---|
| India-focused platform (INDmoney) | Investors who want fractional shares, recurring-investment tools and an India-oriented funding and reporting flow. | The legal broker and custodian in your account documents, the bank’s foreign-exchange spread, current withdrawal process and the protection limits that apply to your specific account. |
| IFSC-linked platform (Groww) | Investors seeking a familiar Indian onboarding experience and a stated per-order brokerage schedule. | Whether new US-stock activation is open. Groww’s help page reviewed for this guide says activation is currently paused, despite the pricing page remaining available. |
| Direct international broker (Interactive Brokers) | Experienced investors who need international products, detailed order controls or a direct relationship with a global broker. | The India-specific commission tier, statutory and exchange charges, funding route, tax statements and the exact account structure available to an Indian resident. |
The brand on your phone may not be the entity holding your shares. Before opening an account, read the agreement for the broker-dealer, custodian, remittance partner and regulator. Those names determine where assets are held, which complaint process applies and what protection is available if an intermediary fails.

Fast recommendation by investor type
First-time investor who wants fractional shares
Start by checking INDmoney’s live account terms. Its published feature list explicitly includes fractional investing and SIP-style investing, along with zero account-opening, annual-maintenance, platform, withdrawal and reporting fees. Those zero lines do not mean the transaction is free: the same schedule lists 0.25% brokerage and bank foreign-exchange charges of 0.5%–1.2%.
Investor considering Groww
Groww’s published price page lists US-stock brokerage at 0.1% or $1 per executed order, whichever is higher, with SEC, FINRA and CAT charges shown separately. However, its support page says, “Currently, new account activation is paused for US Stocks.” Treat the account as unavailable until the app or support team confirms that a new Indian-resident account can actually be activated.
Active or experienced investor
Interactive Brokers is the most natural starting point when you need a direct international brokerage account, multiple order types or access beyond a basic stock-and-ETF list. Its India pages describe account structures for Indian residents trading NSE and/or international products, while its India broker page uses order-value-based pricing and adds statutory, exchange, tax and GST charges. You must calculate the applicable tier rather than rely on a headline rate.
Published fees: what each provider actually states
| Cost item | INDmoney | Groww | Interactive Brokers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Account opening | Zero on the published fee schedule. | $0 on the published pricing page. | Account availability and any applicable charges depend on the India account structure; the cited material does not state a separate opening fee. |
| Maintenance or AMC | Zero on the published fee schedule. | $0 maintenance on the published pricing page. | Not stated in the cited summary; check the India tariff for your account. |
| Brokerage | 0.25%. | 0.1% or $1 per executed order, whichever is higher. | Order-value-based India pricing; the tariff also notes additional statutory, exchange, tax and GST charges. |
| Foreign exchange | Bank FX charge listed at 0.5%–1.2%. | The cited pricing page does not state one all-in FX spread. | The cited summary does not state one all-in FX spread; your bank or funding route may add a conversion cost. |
| Regulatory charges | Not separately itemised in the supplied fee summary. | SEC, FINRA and CAT fees are listed separately. | Additional statutory, exchange, tax and GST charges are noted. |
| Withdrawal and reporting fees | Zero on the published fee schedule. | Not stated in the cited pricing summary. | Not stated in the cited summary; verify current account and transfer terms. |
A fee table is only a starting point. The effective cost of a purchase is the sum of brokerage, regulatory charges, the INR-to-USD conversion spread, remittance charges, any applicable tax collection at source, and the cost of bringing money back to India. A platform with a lower brokerage percentage can still be more expensive if its FX spread or fixed transfer charge is higher.
Worked cost comparisons without hiding the FX spread
Use the same order size and the same funding amount when comparing routes. The following examples show how to apply the published percentages; they are not a promise of the final debit because banks, regulators and order venues can add charges.
INDmoney example
On a $1,000 purchase, a 0.25% brokerage line equals $2.50 before other charges. If the bank FX charge is applied to the remittance, a 0.5%–1.2% range would add the INR equivalent of $5–$12 on a $1,000 conversion. The actual debit can differ if the bank calculates its spread on a different base, rounds the amount or applies a separate transfer fee. Ask for the bank’s quoted INR rate and compare it with the reference rate at the time of transfer.
Rank #2
- Ideal for Gifting
- Ideal for a bookworm
- Comes with Proper Binding
Groww example
On a $1,000 executed order, 0.1% is $1, so the stated minimum produces a $1 brokerage charge. On an order below $1,000, the $1 minimum is higher than 0.1%; on an order above $1,000, 0.1% becomes higher than $1. SEC, FINRA and CAT charges are separate lines, and the published summary does not provide one fixed total for them. Do not treat the $1 figure as an all-in cost.
Interactive Brokers example
Interactive Brokers uses order-value-based pricing for its India service and identifies additional statutory, exchange, tax and GST charges. Because the applicable tier and venue affect the total, enter your order value and market in the live India tariff. Include funding and conversion costs in the same worksheet; a commission-only comparison is incomplete.
A simple comparison worksheet
- Write down the USD value of the intended purchase and the INR amount your bank will debit.
- Record the platform’s brokerage and every fixed minimum.
- Add SEC, FINRA, CAT, exchange, statutory, tax and GST lines that apply to that route.
- Calculate the FX difference between the bank’s quoted rate and a current reference rate; label it as an estimate because the reference rate is not the rate you will receive.
- Add remittance, intermediary-bank and withdrawal charges, plus any applicable TCS under the rules in force on the transfer date.
- Repeat the calculation for a small order, a typical order and an occasional large order. Fixed minimums dominate small trades, while percentage and FX costs dominate larger transfers.
Funding US stocks under India’s LRS
The Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS) is the framework used by resident individuals to send money abroad for permitted purposes, including overseas investing. INDmoney states a limit of $250,000 per financial year for overseas investing under LRS. The limit is across eligible remittances, not a separate allowance granted by each app, and your bank may require purpose codes, PAN and other declarations.
Groww’s help page says an Indian resident does not require a separate US bank account for trading purposes. That does not remove the need for an Indian bank account, KYC, a supported remittance channel or bank-level compliance checks. Confirm whether the route sends funds to an IFSC or overseas account, which entity receives the money and how unused cash is returned.
Before you transfer
- Check the current RBI and bank documentation for LRS limits, permitted investment purposes and TCS treatment.
- Confirm that the name on the bank account, PAN, tax residency and brokerage account match.
- Ask whether the quoted FX rate includes the bank’s spread, correspondent-bank charges and GST.
- Keep the remittance advice, bank debit confirmation and broker credit statement.
- Record the financial year in which the remittance occurred; the LRS limit resets by financial year, not by calendar year.
Do not assume that a platform’s “zero withdrawal fee” covers the bank’s conversion spread or intermediary charges. Ask for the expected INR credit before initiating a withdrawal.

Fractional shares and recurring investing
Fractional investing lets you buy an economic fraction of a share instead of waiting until you can afford one whole share. INDmoney explicitly documents fractional investing and SIP capability. These features can make regular investing easier when a single US share is expensive, but read the terms for voting rights, transferability, corporate actions, dividend treatment and what happens if you close the account.
The supplied Groww pricing and support material confirms its brokerage schedule but does not establish that fractional shares or new US-stock SIPs are available while activation is paused. Check the live product screen and written terms rather than inferring features from domestic mutual-fund or equity products.
Interactive Brokers’ broad international offering may suit investors who prefer whole-share orders and detailed trading controls. Fractional eligibility, supported exchanges and recurring-order functionality are product- and jurisdiction-specific; verify them in the India account before funding.
US-stock and ETF access
Ask each provider for the actual instrument list, not a marketing count. A useful universe should identify:
- Which US exchanges and venues are supported.
- Whether ordinary shares, American depositary receipts, ETFs and newly listed securities are available.
- Whether an instrument is restricted for Indian residents or unavailable because of broker, exchange or regulatory rules.
- How corporate actions, ticker changes, mergers and delistings are handled.
- Whether market, limit, stop and extended-hours orders are supported, and which orders can be placed fractionally.
Interactive Brokers is positioned for a broader international product set. India-focused apps may be easier for a simple long-term portfolio, but the legal account documents and instrument search are the authoritative test. Never infer ETF availability from a US ticker appearing in an article or social-media post.
Onboarding and KYC: a practical checklist
- Confirm eligibility. Check that you are an Indian resident individual permitted to use the route and that the provider accepts your state, tax status and age.
- Complete identity checks. Keep PAN, Aadhaar or other accepted identity documents, address proof, a selfie or video verification and bank details ready.
- Complete foreign-tax forms. The broker may request a US tax-residency form such as W-8BEN. Read the representations and renew it when the provider requests.
- Review the account agreement. Identify the broker-dealer, custodian, clearing firm, regulator, dispute process and investor-protection scheme.
- Check funding instructions. Use only the beneficiary details shown inside the authenticated account; do not send money to a personal account or an unverified third party.
- Make a small test transfer. Confirm the credit, currency, fees and ledger entries before sending a larger amount.
- Place a test order and download statements. Verify execution price, brokerage, regulatory lines, withholding and available cash.
If activation fails, capture the exact error, check that your bank and tax details match, and contact support through the authenticated channel. Do not open duplicate accounts to bypass a KYC hold.
Custody, SIPC and what “protection” means
Protection depends on the legal entity and the account type, not the app logo. INDmoney’s published explanation describes SIPC protection up to $500,000, including $250,000 for cash, for the structure it describes. SIPC protection addresses a broker’s failure to return customer property; it does not protect you from a falling share price, poor investment selection, currency movements or every operational loss.
Rank #4
Read the broker’s customer agreement for segregation of assets, omnibus or individual custody, lending of securities, cash-sweep arrangements and the treatment of fractional interests. If the app routes orders through another broker, identify that broker and its regulator. Save the account-opening documents because the applicable protection may change if the provider changes its clearing or custody arrangement.
Recommended Free Tools
Indian tax, US withholding and reporting
US dividends
INDmoney states that US dividends paid to Indian residents are subject to 25% US withholding and that a foreign-tax credit may be claimed in India. The withholding shown on a broker statement is not automatically the final Indian tax result. Keep dividend statements and the tax form supporting the withholding, then apply the current Indian foreign-tax-credit rules when filing.
Capital gains in India
The Income Tax Department’s share-sale guidance says Finance Act 2024 introduced a uniform 12.5% long-term capital-gains rate for covered capital assets and removed indexation in the stated cases. Whether a particular US share sale falls within that treatment depends on the asset, holding period, resident status and law applicable for the relevant assessment year. Keep purchase confirmations, sale confirmations, corporate-action records, INR conversion values and fees.
Foreign-asset reporting
Foreign shares and related income can create reporting obligations in the Indian return. Use the broker’s year-end statements, dividend records, realised-gain report and peak-balance information where supplied. Do not rely solely on an app’s tax summary; reconcile it with bank remittance records and your own trade ledger. A chartered accountant or tax professional should confirm the correct schedules and foreign-tax-credit claim for your circumstances.
Withdrawals and closing an account
Before investing, test the withdrawal path in the help centre and account agreement. Check whether cash must be settled, whether fractional positions must be liquidated, the minimum withdrawal amount, supported Indian bank accounts, processing days and the FX rate used for conversion. A withdrawal fee shown as zero by a platform does not guarantee zero bank or correspondent charges.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Choosing on brokerage alone
Compare a complete transfer and sale cycle. Include FX, remittance, regulatory charges, taxes, withdrawal and the cost of converting proceeds back to INR.
Assuming the account is available
Groww’s support page currently says new US-stock activation is paused. Availability can change independently of the price page, so confirm activation immediately before completing KYC or planning a transfer.
Confusing a zero fee with a zero cost
“Zero” account, maintenance, platform or reporting fees do not remove brokerage, FX spreads, statutory charges or taxes.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Ignoring the legal entity
Record the broker, custodian and regulator named in the agreement. The app’s brand is not sufficient evidence of custody or protection.
Sending the wrong amount under LRS
Track all eligible remittances during the financial year and ask your bank how it will apply the current TCS and documentation rules before transferring.
Failing to preserve records
Download statements at least quarterly and after major corporate actions. Waiting until tax filing season can leave missing exchange rates, withholding certificates or transaction details.
Decision framework
| If your priority is… | Start with… | Decisive check |
|---|---|---|
| Fractional purchases and automated investing | INDmoney | Confirm the current fractional and SIP terms, then price the 0.25% brokerage plus 0.5%–1.2% bank FX range. |
| A familiar Indian interface and published $1 minimum | Groww | Verify that new US-stock activation has reopened and add SEC, FINRA, CAT and FX costs. |
| International breadth and advanced controls | Interactive Brokers | Read the India tariff, venue charges, GST and funding instructions for your exact account. |
| Lowest total cost | Whichever wins your worksheet | Use identical order sizes and include every debit and credit, not just brokerage. |
Bottom line: how to choose today
Use INDmoney as the initial candidate if fractional investing and a recurring plan matter and you accept the published brokerage and FX structure. Consider Groww only after confirming that its paused new-account activation has ended. Choose Interactive Brokers when the direct international-broker model, product breadth and order controls justify a more detailed setup. In every case, verify the live tariff, LRS and bank requirements, tax documents, custody entity and withdrawal route on the day you fund the account.
