For most Android phones, start with Google Play Protect. It is built in, enabled by default, and checks apps for harmful behavior. Add a reputable third-party app when you need independent testing, stronger phishing and web protection, anti-theft controls, privacy monitoring, or identity features. In AV-TEST’s July 2026 Android evaluation, Bitdefender Mobile Security 3.3, Norton 360 26.11, and Google Play Protect each earned the maximum 18/18 points.
iPhones do not need a conventional antivirus app for normal use. The practical defenses are current iOS updates, a strong passcode or biometrics, two-factor authentication, Stolen Device Protection, App Store-only installation, unique passwords or passkeys, and caution with links and attachments. Apple’s Lockdown Mode is an optional control for the very small number of people facing highly sophisticated, targeted attacks—not a general-purpose setting for everyone.
Quick verdict: which protection fits your phone?
Choose by operating system and threat model rather than by the word “antivirus” on an app-store listing.
| Option | Best fit | What the evidence establishes | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Play Protect | Most Android users who want a free baseline | Checks apps before download, scans apps installed from other sources and periodically scans the device, warns about harmful apps, and can disable or remove them. It can also issue privacy alerts and reset permissions for unused apps. | It is a baseline service, not a complete suite of independent privacy, identity, or anti-theft tools. |
| Bitdefender Mobile Security 3.3 | Android users who want an independently tested third-party scanner | Scored 18/18 in AV-TEST’s July 2026 test, receiving 6/6 for protection, performance, and usability. | Check the current plan, feature limits, supported Android versions, privacy policy, and regional availability before subscribing. |
| Norton 360 26.11 for Android | Users looking for a broader security-suite approach | Scored 18/18 in the same July 2026 AV-TEST evaluation. | Included web, identity, and other features vary by plan and country; verify them before purchase. |
| Apple’s built-in protections | Every iPhone user | Apple’s update, app-signing, account-security, and device-protection model is the primary defense. | There is no Android-style need for routine third-party malware scanning for ordinary use. |
| Apple Lockdown Mode | People who may be targeted by highly sophisticated attacks | Apple describes it as protection against “extremely rare and highly sophisticated cyber attacks.” | It limits apps, websites, attachments, and other features, so convenience and compatibility decrease. |
AV-TEST evaluated 12 Android mobile-security products in July 2026. Its scoring model gives up to 6 points each for protection, performance, and usability, for a maximum of 18. A perfect score is strong evidence for that test version and date; it is not a guarantee against every future threat or every form of stalkerware.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
What “anti-spyware” means on a phone
Ordinary malware and stalkerware are different problems
Mobile-security apps traditionally focus on malicious applications, phishing pages, dangerous downloads, and behavior that harms a device or steals data. Spyware is a broader surveillance category. Consumer spyware can attempt to collect messages, location, call information, photographs, or account data, sometimes after someone with physical access to the phone installs it.
The FTC-hosted research paper on consumer Android spyware documents both surveillance functionality and security weaknesses in these products. That matters when comparing apps: a high score in a general malware test does not automatically tell you how an app handles every stalkerware sample. AV-Comparatives’ 2025 stalkerware test separately examined 13 Android security apps, which is why spyware or stalkerware coverage should be treated as its own comparison axis.
What a security app can and cannot see
An Android scanner can inspect installed packages, permissions, behavior, and web traffic that passes through its protection components. It cannot magically read every encrypted conversation, recover evidence that has already been deleted, or prove who installed a suspicious app. A clean scan means no detection was made under that product’s definitions and settings; it does not establish that a phone has never been monitored.

Signs worth investigating
- An unfamiliar app appears in the installed-app list or in device-administrator, accessibility, VPN, or notification-access settings.
- Battery or mobile-data use changes sharply without a corresponding change in your habits.
- Unexpected accessibility prompts, persistent notifications, or settings changes appear.
- An account reports sign-ins, password resets, or two-factor prompts you did not initiate.
- Someone knows precise information that should not be available to them.
These signs have many benign causes, including a failing battery, a software update, or a misconfigured backup. Treat them as reasons to check methodically, not as proof of spyware.
Google Play Protect: the Android baseline
What it does
Google says Play Protect “checks your apps and devices for harmful behavior.” It checks apps before download, scans apps installed from outside Google Play, and performs periodic device scans. When it identifies a harmful app, it can warn you, disable the app, or remove it. It can also show privacy alerts and reset permissions for apps you have not used recently.
How to check that it is active
- Open the Google Play Store.
- Tap your profile picture, then choose Play Protect.
- Review the date and result of the latest scan and run a scan if the status is not current.
- Open Play Protect settings and leave Scan apps with Play Protect enabled.
- Leave the setting that improves detection of harmful apps enabled unless a qualified administrator has a documented reason to change it.
Menu wording can differ slightly by Android release and manufacturer. If you cannot find the controls, use the Play Store’s settings search for “Play Protect.”

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
When Play Protect is enough
For a personal Android phone that installs ordinary apps from Google Play, receives security updates, and has a locked screen, Play Protect is a sensible minimum. It is also the right first step when troubleshooting a suspicious app because it is already integrated with the device and costs nothing extra.
When to add another app
Consider a third-party product if you regularly sideload applications, click links from unknown senders, use your phone for sensitive work, need a web or phishing filter outside the Play Store, want remote-lock or remote-wipe controls, or want an independent detection engine. Avoid running several full-time scanners at once: they can duplicate notifications, consume resources, and interfere with one another.
What the July 2026 Android test tells you
Results
| Product and version | Protection | Performance | Usability | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bitdefender Mobile Security 3.3 | 6/6 | 6/6 | 6/6 | 18/18 |
| Google Play Protect | 6/6 | 6/6 | 6/6 | 18/18 |
| Norton 360 26.11 | 6/6 | 6/6 | 6/6 | 18/18 |
The test covered 12 products and used current versions available for that evaluation. “Performance” in this context is the test’s impact category, while “usability” includes factors such as false positives and handling. The results do not establish subscription prices, long-term battery impact on your particular phone, iPhone performance, or protection against every stalkerware family.
How to use test scores responsibly
- Use the date and app version with the score. An update can change behavior after the test.
- Compare the same categories across products; do not treat a protection score as a privacy-policy rating.
- Check whether a feature you need is included in the plan sold in your country.
- Look for separate stalkerware coverage when surveillance by another person is your concern.
Comparing the main Android choices
Google Play Protect for simplicity
Play Protect is already present, requires no separate account, and covers the most important app-safety path for typical users. It is the least complicated choice for a family member who is unlikely to manage another subscription. Pair it with automatic Android and Google Play updates, a screen lock, and careful permission decisions.
Bitdefender Mobile Security for an independently tested layer
Bitdefender’s 18/18 AV-TEST result makes it a strong candidate when you specifically want a third-party engine. Before installing, confirm the current Android-version requirement, which features are included without an upgrade, how the app handles diagnostic data, and whether its anti-phishing or anti-theft tools work in your region. A perfect laboratory score does not remove the need to review permissions and account security.
Norton 360 for a suite-style feature set
Norton 360 also scored 18/18 in the July 2026 test. It may suit users who prefer several controls under one subscription, but the exact bundle is plan-dependent. Check the current description for web protection, identity monitoring, VPN or other components rather than assuming that every feature is included in every mobile plan.

iPhone security: what you actually need
The everyday baseline
- Install iOS updates promptly through Settings > General > Software Update.
- Use a long, unique passcode and enable Face ID or Touch ID where supported.
- Turn on two-factor authentication for your Apple Account and other important accounts.
- Enable Stolen Device Protection in Settings > Face ID & Passcode (or the equivalent Touch ID menu).
- Install apps from the App Store and review an app’s developer, requested permissions, and privacy disclosures.
- Use unique passwords or passkeys, keep your recovery methods current, and reject unexpected sign-in prompts.
- Do not open unknown links or attachments merely because they arrived in a familiar-looking message.
These controls address the main ways an iPhone account or device is compromised: outdated software, a stolen passcode, reused credentials, unauthorized physical access, or social engineering.
When Lockdown Mode is appropriate
Apple says Lockdown Mode helps protect devices against “extremely rare and highly sophisticated cyber attacks.” It is intended for people who may be individually targeted, such as certain journalists, activists, public officials, or security researchers—not as a routine antivirus substitute.
Lockdown Mode limits some message attachments, web technologies, invitations, FaceTime behavior, device connections, and other features. Those restrictions can break sites or workflows you rely on. If you are not facing a credible, high-end targeting risk, the normal update and account-security baseline is usually the better balance.

| Feature | Questions to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Independent protection testing | Which lab, test date, app version, and categories? | Shows how the product performed under a defined evaluation rather than a marketing claim. |
| Spyware and stalkerware detection | Does the vendor publish separate coverage or test participation? | Surveillance tools are not identical to ordinary viruses. |
| Phishing and malicious-site blocking | Does protection cover the browser and links in messages, or only an in-app browser? | Many mobile attacks begin with a link, not an installed app. |
| Anti-theft | Can you locate, lock, alert, or erase the phone, and what permissions are required? | Useful after loss or theft, but dependent on battery, connectivity, and account access. |
| Privacy monitoring | Does it flag excessive permissions, data exposure, or account breaches? | Helps identify risk that a malware scan will not classify as malicious. |
| Performance | What does the independent performance category measure, and how does the app behave on your device? | Continuous services can affect battery, storage, and notifications. |
| OS support | Which Android versions and manufacturers are supported today? | An app that cannot update on your phone provides stale protection. |
| Privacy and cost | What data is collected, why, for how long, and what is the recurring price after any trial? | A security tool should not create an unacceptable data or billing trade-off. |
Choose by situation
Typical Android owner
Keep Play Protect enabled, update Android and apps, use a screen lock, and avoid unknown APK files. Add one third-party app only if you want independent scanning or web, anti-theft, privacy, or identity features.
Frequent sideloader or traveler
Use a reputable third-party scanner with current updates, keep Play Protect on, and treat APKs from file-sharing sites as high risk. Do not grant accessibility, device-administrator, or notification access just because an app requests it.
Parent or family-support scenario
Prefer the simplest setup that the user will maintain. Play Protect plus automatic updates and a recovery-ready Google Account may be safer in practice than a feature-rich subscription that is ignored. Document the recovery email, two-factor method, and who can help if the phone is lost.

Person facing possible targeted surveillance
Do not rely on a single scan. Preserve suspicious notifications and account alerts, change credentials from a device you trust, update the phone, and seek advice from a qualified digital-safety organization. If removing an app could alert an abusive person, plan for personal safety before changing anything.
iPhone owner
Spend effort on updates, passcode protection, Stolen Device Protection, two-factor authentication, and link safety. Investigate Lockdown Mode only when your risk justifies its restrictions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to investigate a suspicious Android phone
- Make a safety plan. If another person may be monitoring you, use a trusted device for research and support. Changing settings can reveal that you are investigating.
- Update first. Install available Android security and app updates, then restart the phone.
- Run Play Protect. Open the Play Store, go to your profile picture > Play Protect, and run a scan.
- Review installed apps. In Settings > Apps, sort by recently installed or recently updated. Investigate unfamiliar names, blank icons, or apps you did not choose.
- Review powerful access. Check Settings > Security for device administrators and Settings > Accessibility, Notification access, VPN, and Install unknown apps. Revoke access you cannot explain.
- Check accounts. Review Google Account devices, security events, two-factor prompts, and recovery methods from a trusted session.
- Escalate if necessary. Save relevant evidence before uninstalling anything, and consider a factory reset only after backing up essential data and securing accounts.
Settings names vary by manufacturer. Do not delete an app solely because its name is unfamiliar; verify its package, developer, purpose, and whether the phone needs it.
How to investigate an iPhone
- Install the latest iOS update and restart the phone.
- Review Settings > General > iPhone Storage for apps you do not recognize.
- Review Settings > Privacy & Security for unexpected access to location, camera, microphone, photos, contacts, Bluetooth, and local network.
- Check Settings > [your name] for devices linked to your Apple Account and remove anything unfamiliar.
- Change the Apple Account password and other important passwords from a trusted device if you see unauthorized activity.
- Turn on Stolen Device Protection and verify two-factor authentication.
- Use Lockdown Mode only after considering which sites and features your work requires.
Apple’s controls can reveal account or permission problems, but no menu can prove that a sophisticated compromise never occurred. For a credible targeted threat, obtain specialist assistance rather than repeatedly installing random “cleaner” apps.
Installation, privacy, and subscription pitfalls
Download from the right place
Use Google Play or the Apple App Store, check the developer name, and avoid links in unsolicited messages. A fake security app can be more dangerous than having no extra app.

Read the billing terms
Prices, trials, renewal rates, plan names, and included identity features change by country and date. The July 2026 test results do not establish any current subscription price. Confirm the recurring amount and cancellation path in the store or vendor account before starting a trial.
Do not stack overlapping products
Keep Play Protect enabled, but avoid multiple always-on third-party antivirus engines unless a security administrator explicitly requires them. One well-maintained scanner plus the platform baseline is easier to manage and troubleshoot.
Maintenance routine
- Install operating-system and app updates promptly.
- Run an on-demand scan after installing software from outside the normal store or after a suspicious link.
- Review high-risk permissions every few months.
- Check Google or Apple account sessions and recovery methods after a lost phone, password reset, or unexpected two-factor prompt.
- Test that you can locate, lock, or erase a lost phone before you need the feature.
- Remove apps you no longer use and revoke their permissions first.
Frequently asked questions
Is Google Play Protect enough for every Android phone?
No single control covers every risk. Play Protect is an effective default baseline, but people who sideload apps, need web and anti-theft features, or face a targeted surveillance threat may need additional controls and specialist advice.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do I need antivirus on my iPhone?
Most people do not need a conventional antivirus scanner. Keep iOS current, secure the Apple Account, use Stolen Device Protection, install from the App Store, and treat unexpected links and attachments as suspicious.
Can a perfect AV-TEST score prove an app detects spyware?
No. The July 2026 AV-TEST score measures protection, performance, and usability in that test. Stalkerware is a distinct category, and AV-Comparatives tested it separately in 2025.
Should I turn on Lockdown Mode just in case?
Usually not. Apple designed it for the very small number of people facing highly sophisticated, targeted attacks, and its restrictions can disrupt normal apps and websites.
