Anthem is no longer a viable game to return to. EA announced that its online servers would be sunset on January 12, 2026, and its FAQ states that the game has no offline mode: once the servers are offline, Anthem is not playable. The closest replacement depends on which part of Anthem you miss most. Choose Helldivers 2 for immediate four-player squad missions, Warframe for years of collection and build progression, or Destiny 2 for a broad social shooter with free entry and cross-save.
None recreates Anthem’s Javelin suits, flight system and open-world activity structure exactly. The practical question is which combination of co-op, movement, progression, platform access and monetization best fits you now.

What happened to Anthem?
EA and BioWare announced on July 3, 2025: “After careful consideration, we will be sunsetting Anthem on January 12, 2026.” Anthem was designed as an online-only game, so there is no single-player fallback, local server option or offline campaign after the service ends.

That distinction matters when choosing a replacement. Some retired online games retain offline features, but EA’s service policy says this depends on each game’s architecture. Anthem’s architecture does not permit continued play without its servers. The company also describes a typical retirement trigger of fewer than 1% of peak online players across all EA titles; that is a general policy threshold, not a measured player count for Anthem.

If you still have Anthem installed, keeping the files does not restore access. Your progress, Javelins and missions depended on the live service. A successor must therefore provide not only similar combat, but also a service you are willing to trust for ongoing play.

Helldivers 2: the best immediate co-op substitute

Sony describes Helldivers 2 as a “frenetic third-person co-operative team shooter.” You can join with up to three friends, creating a four-player squad that coordinates weapons, objectives and extraction. That makes it the strongest choice if what you remember most from Anthem is logging in with friends, selecting a loadout and tackling a mission together.

The game’s structure keeps the group focused on a shared objective rather than dividing everyone into separate personal activities. Communication, timing and choosing equipment for the mission are more important than simply having the highest individual damage number. Players who enjoyed Anthem’s coordinated strikes can move into this format with little adjustment to the social rhythm.

- No Javelin classes: you do not swap between Anthem’s specialized exosuits or build a character around flight, shields and suit abilities.

- Confirm that your console or PC is one of the supported PS5, PC or Xbox platforms.

Warframe: the best replacement for long-term progression

Warframe is the strongest fit for Anthem players who valued collecting suits, weapons and materials, then refining builds over months or years. Its official site presents availability on all platforms, cross-platform save, recurring Nightwave objectives, Prime Access and a substantial in-game store ecosystem.
Instead of treating one character as the permanent center of progression, Warframe lets you assemble a large collection of frames and weapons, each with different abilities and mod combinations. That creates a wide experimentation space: you can keep a familiar setup for routine missions, then build a specialized loadout for a different objective.

Destiny 2: the best social and free-entry alternative

Destiny 2 offers a “Play for Free” path and a mature social ecosystem built around clans, Fireteam Finder, collections and multiple purchase options. Cross-save lets you carry a character between supported platforms, which is valuable if your group is spread across different devices.
Its breadth makes it a practical choice for players who want several ways to play: join a clan, find a fireteam for a particular activity or progress independently before grouping up. That flexibility is different from Anthem’s more focused squad identity, but it can make it easier to maintain a regular multiplayer routine.
Understand the seasonal and expansion structure
Destiny 2 is a live service, so its available activities and recommended purchases change. Some content is available through the free path; other content is tied to current seasons, expansions or bundles. Before paying, review the current offer on your platform rather than relying on an older guide or a bundle name remembered from a previous year.
Cross-save preserves access to your account progression, but it does not necessarily transfer every purchase between platforms. Check the platform-specific purchase and entitlement rules before buying an expansion on one device for a character you primarily use on another.

Helldivers 2 is the clearest four-person squad game: everyone deploys into the same mission and works toward shared objectives. Warframe supports broader online multiplayer and recurring activities, but its progression is more collection-oriented. Destiny 2 provides the broadest mix of social tools and activity types, with clans and Fireteam Finder helping players assemble groups for different goals.

Warframe emphasizes permanent collection and build experimentation. Destiny 2 uses a seasonal live-service model in which the current offer and expansion structure matter. Pick Helldivers 2 when your group is the priority

Pick Warframe when progression is the priority
Select it when your ideal replacement is a large, evolving catalogue of frames, weapons and builds. Give yourself time to learn its systems; comparing its first few missions directly with a fully developed Anthem account will make the transition seem less fair than it is.

Pick Destiny 2 when flexibility is the priority
Select it when you need clans, matchmaking tools, cross-save and a free starting route. Treat the current expansion and seasonal offer as part of the buying decision, not as a permanent specification.
Pick none of them if offline ownership is non-negotiable
All three recommendations are online services. If Anthem’s shutdown changed your tolerance for server dependence, look specifically for a game that advertises a complete offline mode or local campaign. A game being playable solo does not prove that it will work without authentication or servers.

- Identify the feature you actually miss: four-player missions, aerial movement, loot collection, build crafting, social groups or a free entry point.
- Check your platform and the platforms used by your friends.
- Verify whether online console multiplayer access is required for the edition you plan to use.

- Review account-linking and cross-save rules before creating a new account or buying on a second platform.
- Decide whether you accept another online-only service after Anthem’s shutdown.
- Start with the base or free offering where available, then buy expansions, passes or optional items only after the core loop suits you.
What Anthem’s shutdown teaches about choosing a live service
An online-only design can make a game feel seamless while the service is healthy, but it also means the publisher controls whether the game remains usable. EA’s policy notes that some retired titles can retain offline play and others cannot. The decisive question is not whether a game has a solo mode; it is whether that mode functions without the service.
For any replacement, check three things separately: the server requirement, the account requirement and the content model. A game may allow solo missions but still require authentication. It may support cross-save but keep purchases tied to a storefront. It may advertise free entry while placing the activities you want behind a changing seasonal or expansion structure.
That does not make live-service games a bad choice. It means you should value the present experience while understanding that access is conditional. Keep purchases modest until you know the game fits, and avoid assuming that a current feature list will remain unchanged indefinitely.
Bottom line
For most former Anthem squads, start with Helldivers 2. It most directly replaces the feeling of joining friends for coordinated third-person missions, although it has no Javelins or flight. Choose Warframe for the deepest long-term collection and build journey, or Destiny 2 for social breadth, cross-save and a free starting path. Anthem itself cannot be revived offline, and no current choice reproduces every part of it, so make the decision around the feature you miss most and the service dependence you are willing to accept.
