Short answer: Leave Google Play Protect enabled on every certified Android phone and keep Android security updates current. That is the minimum protection against harmful apps. If you want an additional paid layer, Bitdefender Mobile Security is the best-supported general choice in the evidence reviewed here; Kaspersky Premium is a strong alternative, while Norton 360 suits people who already want a wider security-suite ecosystem.
These products can improve malware, phishing, privacy, anti-theft or web protection, but none can guarantee a safe UPI payment or protect you from every scam. Your app-installation habits, device updates, screen lock, permissions and response to suspicious messages remain decisive.
What banking and UPI protection has to defend against
A banking app can be legitimate and still be used on a compromised phone. The security problem is the device and the session around the app, not only the bank application itself. UPI users also move money through QR codes, payment requests, links and notifications, which gives attackers several opportunities to trick a person without defeating the bank’s encryption.
Fake or modified applications
Criminals copy bank and UPI branding, then distribute an imitation through a message, a web page or an unofficial download. A security scanner may identify the package as harmful, but the strongest prevention is installing the app from Google Play, checking the developer name and keeping automatic updates on. Sideloaded files and “modded” versions should be treated as untrusted.

Phishing and scam pages
A message can send you to a convincing login page without installing malware. Look for protections that warn about malicious or deceptive sites, but do not assume a warning system recognizes every newly registered domain. Open your bank or UPI app from its icon instead of following a payment or account-verification link, and never disclose an OTP, UPI PIN or screen-sharing code to someone who contacts you unexpectedly.
Credential interception and session manipulation
Advanced banking tests examine whether malware can capture credentials, interfere with an active banking session, obtain remote access or exfiltrate sensitive data. A conventional antivirus score mainly reflects malware detection; it does not certify that every bank, UPI application or phone build is protected from each of those attack paths.
Lost or stolen phones
A strong screen lock and a working device-location and erase function reduce the damage from physical loss. Anti-theft features in a security app can add location, lock or recovery controls, but they depend on the phone being powered on, connected and still associated with your account. Set up the built-in recovery tools before you need them.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Google Play Protect is the baseline
On certified Android devices, Google Play Protect is built in and costs nothing extra. Google says it automatically scans Android apps every day, helps prevent harmful-app installation and combines on-device and cloud-based protection. Its developer documentation reports that the service scans 200 billion Android apps daily. Android’s security guidance also describes ongoing security updates, privacy controls and payment protection in Google Wallet.
That makes Play Protect the correct starting point, not an optional extra. It is not a complete substitute for every paid feature: it does not turn every browser session into a hardened banking environment, provide every privacy-monitoring service or replace sensible anti-scam behavior. A paid app is most useful when you can identify a missing capability you actually need.
Verify Play Protect before installing anything else
- Open the Google Play Store, tap your profile picture and choose Play Protect.
- Run a scan and wait for the result. If a harmful app is found, follow Google’s removal instructions rather than dismissing the warning.
- Open Play Protect settings and leave Scan apps with Play Protect enabled. Leave the option to improve harmful-app detection enabled if it is offered.
- Install pending Android and Google Play system updates. Menu names vary by manufacturer; use Settings search for Software update and Google Play system update.
- Repeat the check after restoring a backup, changing phones or installing an app from outside Google Play.
What independent testing actually shows
Independent scores are useful for comparing products under controlled conditions, but they are not a certification of a particular Indian bank, UPI app or transaction. Read the test scope and date beside every number.

AV-TEST Android results from May 2025
AV-TEST evaluated 14 Android mobile-security products using their default settings in May 2025. Each product can earn up to six points for protection, six for performance and six for usability. A total of 10 points or more earns the AV-TEST seal.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| Product tested | Protection | Performance | Usability | What the result means |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bitdefender Mobile Security 3.3 | 6/6 | 6/6 | 6/6 | Maximum score in all three AV-TEST categories in that test. |
| Kaspersky Premium for Android 11.121 | 6/6 | 6/6 | 6/6 | Maximum score in all three categories in that test. |
| Norton 360 | 6/6 | 6/6 | 5/6 | Maximum protection and performance scores, with one point less for usability. |
| Google Play Protect | 5.5/6 | 6/6 | 5/6 | Strong baseline result, but not a perfect score in protection or usability. |
The table is a snapshot of the tested versions and default configurations. It does not prove that one product will block a particular UPI scam, nor does it measure how well you follow a payment prompt. App updates, Android versions and threat patterns change after a test is published.
AV-Comparatives’ 2025 certification requirements
AV-Comparatives’ 2025 review required at least 99% malware protection, no more than 10 false positives and less than 8% battery drain, while core features had to work reliably. Those thresholds help you judge a product’s balance: a scanner that detects threats but drains a phone or blocks legitimate banking software can create a different usability problem. The published thresholds are requirements for that review, not a battery result for every app listed in this article.
AVLab’s 2026 banking-security test
AVLab Cybersecurity Foundation’s 2026 edition ran from 3 November through 23 December 2025 with the latest software versions, default settings and hardened settings. Its outcome criterion included whether an attack intercepted credentials, manipulated a banking session, gained remote access or exfiltrated sensitive information. The catalogue included banking-oriented modules with names such as Safe Money, Safe Pay, Bank Mode, Safe Banking & Browsing and Pay Guard.
That approach is closer to a real banking threat model than a malware-only score, but it still does not certify every UPI provider. When comparing an app, look for current documentation of secure browsing, scam and malicious-site warnings, transaction or payment protections, privacy controls and anti-theft features rather than assuming that an “antivirus” label covers all of them.
Android security apps compared
| Option | Best fit | Capabilities documented for this comparison | Requirements or limits | AV-TEST May 2025 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Google Play Protect | Every Android user | Daily app scanning, harmful-app installation prevention, on-device and cloud protection | Built into certified Android devices; does not provide every paid privacy, anti-theft or secure-browser function | 5.5 protection, 6 performance, 5 usability |
| Bitdefender Mobile Security for Android | Users wanting the clearest broad paid feature set | Malware and privacy protection, anti-theft, WearON support and a basic VPN allowance | Supports Android 7.0 and later; basic VPN allowance is 200 MB per day; vendor FAQ describes a 14-day full trial | 6 protection, 6 performance, 6 usability |
| Kaspersky Premium for Android | Users prioritizing broad security and privacy controls | Broad security and privacy controls are documented, but current regional availability and exact feature packaging should be checked | Android requirement and current subscription terms were not established here | 6 protection, 6 performance, 6 usability |
| Norton 360 | Users who want a wider security-suite ecosystem | Broader suite positioning; no UPI-specific protection was established | Android requirement and current plan terms were not established here | 6 protection, 6 performance, 5 usability |
Google Play Protect: the default recommendation
Choose this when you want a no-cost minimum layer or when your main concern is preventing clearly harmful applications. It is already present on certified phones, updates through Google Play services and does not add a second always-running subscription product. Its limitations matter if you want dedicated anti-phishing, identity monitoring, a VPN, additional anti-theft controls or a hardened browser experience.

Bitdefender Mobile Security: the best-supported paid general choice
Bitdefender’s documented Android package covers malware and privacy protection, anti-theft tools, WearON integration and a basic VPN capped at 200 MB per day. The stated operating-system requirement is Android 7.0 or later. Its vendor FAQ describes a 14-day full trial, so check the renewal terms and regional availability before starting it.
Its 6/6/6 AV-TEST result gives it the strongest all-round evidence in this comparison. That score supports it as a general paid recommendation, not as a promise that it will approve, block or insure every UPI transaction. You still need Play Protect, current Android patches and careful handling of payment requests.
Kaspersky Premium for Android: a high-scoring alternative
Kaspersky Premium also received 6/6/6 in the May 2025 AV-TEST results. It is a reasonable alternative for readers who value a broad combination of security and privacy controls. Because availability, policy and feature packaging can differ by country, confirm that the current Android offering is available to you and includes the functions you intend to use before paying.
Norton 360: useful for a broader suite ecosystem
Norton 360 scored 6/6/5 in the same test. It is best considered by people who already want a wider suite around their devices and accounts, rather than by someone seeking a UPI-specific guarantee. The available evidence here does not establish dedicated protection for every UPI app or bank, so verify the current Android feature list if secure payment browsing is your deciding requirement.
How to decide whether you need a paid app
- Stay with Play Protect if you install only from Google Play, keep Android patched, use a strong lock screen and mainly need harmful-app detection.
- Add a paid app if you want extra web and phishing warnings, privacy monitoring, anti-theft controls, a VPN allowance or one dashboard for several security functions.
- Prioritize banking-oriented controls if you frequently use payment links or web banking. Look for a secure browser or banking mode, malicious-site blocking and protections against remote access or session manipulation; verify that the current Android version actually includes them.
- Check regional terms before subscribing. App availability, Android support, trial length, VPN allowances, renewal price and privacy policy can change by country and over time.
Do not install two products that both provide real-time scanning unless the vendors explicitly support that configuration. Overlapping scanners can create duplicate warnings, battery use or false positives without doubling protection. Play Protect can remain enabled alongside a reputable security app because it is the platform baseline.
Secure your phone and UPI apps step by step
1. Patch the operating system and core services
- Open Settings and search for Software update. Install the latest Android update offered for your model.
- Search Settings for Google Play system update and install it separately if available.
- Restart when requested, then revisit the update screen to confirm that no second update is waiting.
Android update labels and delivery schedules differ by manufacturer, carrier and model. If your phone no longer receives security updates, a security app cannot compensate for missing platform fixes; consider moving banking to a supported device.

- [Fingerprint Unlocked] Designed for Samsung Galaxy S24 5G 6.2-inch. For a better unlocking experience, please go to Settings of your device to activate the Touch Sensitivity and re-enter your fingerprint after applying the film
- [Privacy Protection] Screen is only visible to person directly in front of screen. Protects your personal privacy effectively and ensures comfortable viewing experience
- [Premium Material] Built with 9H high hardness tempered glass. Highly protect the screen from unwanted scratches and abrasions
- [Anti-Fingerprint] The hydrophobic and oleophobic coating effectively prevents the residue of fingerprints, oil and watermark from gathering on the screen
- [Case-Friendly] There is enough edge space around the borders for your case to wrap around the edges of your mobile. Compatible with most phone cases
2. Install only the authentic banking and UPI applications
- Search for the bank or payment provider in Google Play rather than tapping an installation link in a message.
- Check the developer identity, app description, update history and the publisher’s official support information.
- Compare the app name and icon carefully. Treat urgent “KYC,” refund or account-blocking messages as potential scams.
- Enable automatic updates for the app, or check its Play Store page regularly.
3. Review permissions and special access
- Open Settings, choose Apps, select the bank or UPI app and review Permissions.
- Allow only permissions that match a stated function. A payment app should not need unrestricted access to unrelated files, contacts or accessibility controls to perform an ordinary transfer.
- Search Settings for Accessibility, Device admin apps, Install unknown apps and Display over other apps. Disable access for software you do not recognize.
- Recheck these screens after installing a remote-support tool, a keyboard, a “cleaner” or an app from outside Google Play.
4. Strengthen the lock screen and recovery
- Use a long device PIN or password and enable biometrics only on a phone you physically control.
- Keep the device-location and erase service enabled, and test that your account can locate the phone.
- Hide sensitive notification content on the lock screen so OTPs and payment details are not displayed to anyone holding the device.
- Store recovery codes and bank contact details somewhere other than the phone itself.
5. Separate trusted and untrusted activity
Use the bank’s own app or a manually entered official address for account access. Avoid making a payment while a caller is directing you through screen sharing or remote-control software. A VPN can protect traffic on some networks, but it does not make a fraudulent payment request legitimate and does not replace app and account security.

What to look for in a banking-security feature
Marketing names differ, so evaluate the behavior rather than the label. A useful banking or secure-browser function should make it harder for a malicious page or process to capture a login, overlay a fake screen, alter a destination or maintain remote control while you approve a transaction.
- Malicious-site and phishing detection: warns before a known dangerous or deceptive page loads.
- Secure browser or banking mode: opens sensitive sessions in a protected environment and explains when that mode is active.
- Transaction and payment checks: identifies suspicious links, overlays or changes to the intended destination where supported.
- Anti-remote-access controls: alerts you when a remote-support or screen-sharing tool could expose a banking session.
- Privacy and permission monitoring: shows which applications access sensitive data and flags unusual behavior.
- Anti-theft and recovery: helps locate, lock or erase a lost phone and provides account-recovery guidance.
Ask the vendor which Android versions, browsers, banks and payment applications are supported. “Banking protection” is not a universal certification, and a feature that works in one browser or country may not cover an app used in another.
Performance, privacy and false-positive trade-offs
A security app runs with high privileges and may inspect installed applications, web addresses, files, network activity or device events. Read its privacy policy and Android permission requests before granting access. Prefer a product that explains what data is collected, why it is needed and how long it is retained.
Battery and usability matter during a payment. AV-Comparatives’ 2025 certification used less than 8% battery drain as one requirement and allowed no more than 10 false positives. Those are useful comparison thresholds, not a prediction for your handset. If a security app repeatedly blocks your bank, delays notifications or drains the battery, update it first, check for an exclusion mechanism documented by the vendor and contact support before disabling protection globally.
Never disable Play Protect or a security app merely because a message says you must do so to receive a refund, unlock an account or complete KYC. A legitimate bank representative should not need your UPI PIN, OTP or remote control of the phone.
What to do if you suspect compromise
- Stop the transaction and disconnect the phone from mobile data and Wi-Fi if a malicious app or remote session appears active.
- From a different, trusted device, contact your bank and payment provider through the number or website printed on an official statement or card. Ask them to freeze or review UPI activity and revoke suspicious sessions.
- Change banking and email passwords from the clean device. Do not reuse a password that may have been exposed on the phone.
- On the affected phone, run Play Protect and the installed security app’s scan. Remove unknown applications and revoke accessibility, device-admin, overlay and unknown-install permissions.
- Review bank statements, UPI mandates, saved beneficiaries and device sessions. Report unauthorized transfers immediately; response windows and reimbursement rules depend on the provider and country.
- If suspicious behavior continues, back up only essential personal files, perform a factory reset and restore applications individually from Google Play. Reinstalling an entire unverified backup can restore the problem.
- Replace the device or SIM if it no longer receives security updates or if your carrier confirms an unauthorized SIM change.
Maintenance routine for safer payments
- Every week: install pending app updates and review new banking or payment notifications.
- Every month: check Android and Google Play system update status, review sensitive permissions and remove apps you no longer use.
- After a suspicious message: open Play Protect, scan, inspect Accessibility and Install unknown apps settings, and contact the bank through an official channel.
- After changing phones: transfer banking apps directly from Google Play, revoke the old device in bank settings and confirm that screen-lock and recovery controls work.
- Before subscribing to a security app: confirm current Android support, regional availability, renewal terms, VPN limits and whether its banking features cover the browser or UPI app you actually use.
App versions, Android requirements, test outcomes, VPN allowances and subscription terms change. Recheck the current vendor documentation and independent test dates when making a purchase or moving to a new phone.
