The best way to improve Android privacy is to use the right control for the right job: Android’s built-in permissions and Privacy Dashboard help you manage access to sensitive information, while network-filtering tools can block requests to known tracking domains. Those controls are complementary, not interchangeable. No single option here is established as a universal tracker blocker, and the available feature documentation does not provide independent head-to-head effectiveness results.

Permissions and tracker blocking solve different privacy problems

An app permission governs whether an app can access a restricted type of data or carry out a restricted action. Examples include access to location or contacts and the ability to record audio. Android describes permissions as a way to protect access to restricted data and actions, and says app developers should request the minimum permissions needed for a feature.

Network filtering works at a different layer. A DNS filter can block a request when an app tries to look up a domain on the filter’s list. That can limit contact with known advertising or tracking domains, but it does not tell you which sensitive permissions an app has or prove that all tracking behavior has stopped.

Privacy question Relevant control What it can tell or do
Can this app access my location, camera, or microphone? Android permissions and, on supported devices, Privacy Dashboard Manage app access; view documented access timelines for location, camera, and microphone.
Can this app contact a known tracker domain? DNS filtering Block domain lookups that match the resolver’s policies or filtering rules, if the app’s traffic uses that DNS path.
Can this particular app use the network? A per-app firewall, such as the controls documented for Rethink Restrict selected apps’ network access, or in some cases block selected endpoints while allowing other connections.
Can I target third-party trackers in apps? DuckDuckGo App Tracking Protection Target third-party app trackers using a feature that DuckDuckGo says works locally on the device.

For most people, the sensible sequence is to review permissions first, then decide whether a network-filtering tool addresses a separate concern. A permission review is useful even if you do not install another app; a network filter does not replace that review.

Start with Android’s built-in permission controls

Review what each app can access

  1. Open Android’s Settings and look for Privacy, Permissions, or Permission manager. The labels and menu layout can vary by device maker and Android version; if the path is not obvious, use Settings search for “Permissions.”
  2. Review the permission categories and the apps allowed to use each one. Pay particular attention to sensitive access such as location, camera, and microphone.
  3. For each app, ask whether the permission is necessary for a feature you actually use. If the reason is unclear, remove access that is not needed and check whether the app still performs its intended function.
  4. Revisit the decision if the app’s role changes or a feature you rely on stops working. A permission that is justified for one feature may not be necessary for another use of the app.

Android’s permission model includes install-time, runtime, and special permissions. These categories reflect different ways access is handled; they do not mean that every permission is equally sensitive or that every app needs the same set. The practical rule is to judge a request by the feature involved and grant no more access than that feature requires.

Use Privacy Dashboard as an access timeline

On supported devices running Android 12 or later, Privacy Dashboard shows timelines for app access to location, camera, and microphone. Search Settings for “Privacy Dashboard” if the menu differs from your device’s documentation. Use the timeline to notice access that deserves a closer look, then go to the relevant permission setting to change an app’s access if appropriate.

The dashboard is not a general network monitor. Its documented scope is access to those sensitive permissions; it is not a log of every internet connection or tracker request an app makes. An app can make network requests without that activity appearing as a location, camera, or microphone event.

Recheck permissions when circumstances change

Permissions are a continuing choice, not a one-time setup. If you stop using a feature, uninstall an app, or change how you use it, review whether its access still makes sense. Android’s official privacy guidance also describes automatic permission removal for unused apps on supported versions. Availability and behavior depend on Android support and device configuration, so check the settings and official guidance on your device rather than assuming that every unused app will be handled identically.

How DNS filtering blocks known tracker domains

When an app needs to contact a domain, it commonly has to resolve that domain name to connect. DNS filtering compares lookup requests with a resolver’s policies or filtering rules. If a requested domain matches a rule, the filter can block that lookup. AdGuard documents DNS server selection, DNS filters, and user rules; Rethink documents DNS-based blocking of known advertising, tracker, and malicious domains.

Where an app’s requests use the configured filtering path, DNS filtering can affect requests across apps. The scope depends on the resolver, the rules in use, and the traffic path. It is not a guarantee that all app traffic is visible to or controlled by that filter.

What DNS filtering can and cannot establish

  • It can target known domains. Blocking depends on the domain being identifiable and included in the resolver’s policy or filter rules.
  • It does not prove that every tracker is stopped. A blocked domain lookup is only one kind of network behavior; DNS filtering alone cannot establish that all tracking has been prevented.
  • It may not distinguish a tracker from other service traffic. If an app relies on a domain that a filter blocks, some app features may fail or behave differently.
  • It does not manage sensitive permissions. Continue to use Android settings for access to location, camera, microphone, and other permissions.

No blocking percentage or comparative success rate is established by the feature documentation discussed here. Treat claims about coverage as dependent on the filter list and traffic path, not as a universal measurement of privacy protection.

Compare the Android tools by their filtering layer

Option Documented focus Per-app control Setup and compatibility considerations
Android permissions and Privacy Dashboard App access to restricted data and actions; dashboard timelines for location, camera, and microphone on supported Android 12+ devices. Manage permissions for apps through system settings. Built in. Menu names differ across devices. This is not DNS or network-request filtering.
AdGuard for Android System-level filtering; DNS servers, filters, and user rules. Its product documentation also describes HTTPS filtering. DNS and broader filtering options; no specific per-app firewall behavior is established in the cited feature descriptions. More configuration choices than a basic DNS setup. HTTPS filtering is a separate, more involved feature that uses a locally installed certificate.
Rethink DNS + Firewall DNS blocking of known ad, tracker, and malicious domains, plus app firewall controls. Can prevent selected apps from connecting over Wi-Fi or mobile data; its documentation also describes blocking selected tracker endpoints while allowing an app’s other connections. Uses Android’s VPN interface to route traffic through the app. A second VPN-based app may conflict; compatibility is not established for every VPN or device.
DuckDuckGo App Tracking Protection Targets third-party trackers in apps, including while apps are not in use, according to DuckDuckGo. Targets app tracker requests; Android permissions remain separate. A feature in DuckDuckGo Private Browser for Android. DuckDuckGo says it works locally on the device and does not collect personal data; this is the provider’s description, not an independent verification.

The table describes the documented features, not independently measured blocking performance. Choose by the layer you want to manage, how much control you need, and whether the setup fits your existing network tools.

Choose a tool for the privacy job you actually have

If you want to see or limit sensitive access

Begin with Android’s permission settings and Privacy Dashboard where supported. This is the direct route for checking app access to location, camera, and microphone. A DNS filter is not a substitute because it does not govern permission grants.

If you want a relatively focused way to block known domains

Consider a DNS filtering option. AdGuard documents DNS server selection with filters and user rules, while Rethink documents DNS-based blocking. Before relying on either, understand which DNS path app traffic uses and what rule set is active. A rule can also interfere with an app if it blocks a domain the app needs.

If you need to restrict an app’s network access

Rethink’s documented firewall controls are relevant when the goal is to prevent selected apps from connecting over Wi-Fi or mobile data. That is a stronger restriction than merely targeting a known tracker domain: an app that cannot connect may lose features that need the network. If you want a narrower restriction, Rethink also describes blocking selected tracker endpoints while allowing other connections.

If your focus is third-party trackers inside apps

DuckDuckGo App Tracking Protection is designed for this specific job. DuckDuckGo says the feature targets third-party trackers in apps and operates locally. Keep the claim in its proper scope: it does not replace Android’s controls for app permissions, and its provider description is not an independent efficacy result.

If you want broader filtering options

AdGuard’s Android documentation describes system-level filtering as well as DNS protection. Its HTTPS filtering is distinct from DNS filtering: the product description says it decrypts traffic locally using a locally installed certificate, then re-encrypts it for communication with the destination. This is a more involved configuration than DNS filtering. Consult the current vendor documentation before enabling it, and consider the additional setup and compatibility trade-offs rather than assuming every connection can be filtered.

Set up a privacy routine without overblocking

  1. Audit permissions before adding a filter. Use Settings search to find permission controls, review access by app or category, and remove permissions that do not serve a feature you need.
  2. Check the Privacy Dashboard if available. On supported Android 12 or later devices, review the location, camera, and microphone timelines for access that you did not expect.
  3. Pick one network-filtering approach based on the desired scope. Decide whether you want DNS domain blocking, per-app firewall controls, targeted app-tracker protection, or broader filtering options. Do not treat these as interchangeable.
  4. Review the provider’s current setup instructions. The feature pages establish capabilities but do not establish a universal setup path for every Android device. Follow current instructions for your version and device rather than relying on a menu path from another model.
  5. Check whether the tool uses Android’s VPN interface. If you already use a VPN-based app, test the privacy tool with it before depending on both. The documented possibility of conflict does not mean every pairing fails.
  6. Test apps you depend on. After enabling filtering or changing rules, check essential app functions. If something breaks, identify the recent filter or rule change and adjust it or exempt the affected traffic as the tool permits.
  7. Keep the permission review separate. A working DNS filter does not mean an app needs broad access, and removing a permission does not block network requests. Revisit both controls when an app’s behavior or your needs change.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Expecting Privacy Dashboard to show trackers. It documents specified sensitive-permission access, not every network request. Use network-filtering features for domain-level controls.
  • Assuming DNS filtering blocks every tracker. It targets domains matched by the active rules and only along the configured DNS path. Avoid interpreting a filter’s presence as proof that tracking has ended.
  • Blocking an app without considering its dependencies. A firewall rule can stop useful network features as well as unwanted connections. Start with the narrowest control that meets your need and check the app afterward.
  • Enabling deeper inspection without understanding the setup. AdGuard describes HTTPS filtering as involving a locally installed certificate and local decryption and re-encryption. Read current documentation and understand the configuration before enabling it.
  • Running overlapping VPN-based tools without checking behavior. Android’s VPN interface may be used by filtering apps, and another VPN-based tool may conflict. Test the combination instead of assuming compatibility or incompatibility.
  • Granting permissions because an app asks. A request alone does not explain why access is necessary. Tie each grant to a feature and revoke access that is not needed.

Which option is best?

There is no evidence here for naming one app the best tracker blocker across all Android users. The practical choice follows the task: use Android settings for permissions and the supported Privacy Dashboard for access timelines; choose DNS filtering to target known domains; use per-app firewall controls when you need to limit which apps can connect; or consider DuckDuckGo’s feature when your focus is third-party trackers in apps. AdGuard offers a broader documented filtering set, with additional setup for HTTPS filtering. These tools differ in coverage layer, setup, VPN interaction, and per-app control, so choose based on the behavior you want to manage rather than a universal ranking.
