Short answer: no third-party Android launcher documented for the Galaxy Z Fold can replace or retain Samsung’s taskbar. The taskbar is drawn by One UI Home, and Samsung’s support position, reproduced by Niagara, says third-party taskbar support is not currently available and is not planned under its current policy. If the taskbar is essential, keep One UI Home as the default. If you are willing to exchange it for a different interface, Niagara offers the strongest foldable-oriented design, while Folio offers the closest functional substitute with a persistent inner-screen dock.
Nova Launcher and Lawnchair remain customization choices, but Folio’s compatibility note places them in the same category: changing the home app removes the One UI taskbar. The right choice therefore depends on whether you value Samsung’s taskbar and app-pair workflow, a fold-aware home layout, or a configurable dock more highly.
Can any launcher replace the Galaxy Z Fold taskbar?
No. In the documented behavior, the taskbar belongs to One UI Home rather than to Android’s general launcher interface. Folio describes it as “the row of apps along the bottom of the unfolded screen” and says that Android stops drawing it when a different home app is selected. Its compatibility note specifically names Nova, Niagara, Lawnchair and Folio as affected.

You can reproduce the taskbar only by switching the phone’s default home app back to One UI Home. A third-party launcher may provide a dock, favorites list or app drawer, but those are separate launcher features and do not restore Samsung’s taskbar integration.
What you give up when you leave One UI Home
The unfolded-screen taskbar
Samsung’s taskbar is designed for the wide inner display. It keeps selected apps available along the bottom while another app is open, reducing the need to return to the home screen. Because it is part of One UI Home, changing the default launcher removes that layer.
Samsung’s app-switching workflow
Readers often use the taskbar together with frequently used apps and Samsung’s foldable multitasking features. A replacement launcher can expose apps through its own dock or list, but it cannot reproduce the same system-owned behavior or guarantee the same interaction with One UI multitasking.

Android Authority reports that third-party launchers can have less polished One UI animations. Niagara lead developer Max Rumpf attributed an important part of this to Android controlling app-opening behavior while Samsung does not expose the relevant app-closing animation API to third-party launchers. This is reported analysis, not a Samsung specification, and the effect can vary by device and One UI release.

The binary taskbar result is the key distinction: One UI Home keeps it; the third-party launchers documented here do not. Other differences affect how comfortable the replacement feels on the two Fold screens, but none changes that platform constraint.
One UI Home: choose this when the taskbar is non-negotiable
One UI Home is the only choice in this comparison that preserves Samsung’s taskbar, favorites behavior and native foldable integration. It is the practical answer if you regularly launch apps from the bottom edge of the unfolded display, depend on Samsung’s multitasking workflow, or want the least risk after a One UI update.
How to return to One UI Home
- Open Settings.
- Go to Apps, then Choose default apps.
- Open Home app.
- Select One UI Home.
- Unfold the phone and confirm that the taskbar is visible at the bottom of the inner display.
Menu wording can differ slightly by One UI version. If the taskbar does not appear immediately, lock and unlock the phone or restart it before changing any other setting. Switching the home app back to One UI Home is the documented way to restore the system-owned bar.
Who should stay with it
- Anyone who treats the taskbar as a core Fold feature rather than a cosmetic dock.
- Users who need Samsung’s app-pair and multitasking behavior to remain predictable.
- People who prefer native cover-screen and inner-screen transitions over extensive home-screen customization.
- Owners who do not want to retest launcher behavior after every major One UI update.
Niagara Launcher: the strongest foldable-oriented third-party option
Niagara is the most extensively documented foldable-oriented option in this set. Its interface is non-grid based, uses adaptive two-section app lists, supports two-column widget stacks on wide inner screens, and can scale icons dynamically. Niagara also documents support for a hardware keyboard, mouse and stylus, plus app continuity between the cover and inner displays. It says it tested foldable support on Galaxy Fold 3- and Fold 4-class devices.

Those are product-documented capabilities, not independent laboratory measurements. They explain why Niagara is a logical candidate for someone who wants a launcher designed around changing screen sizes, but they do not imply taskbar compatibility.
What Niagara replaces functionally
Instead of a permanent Samsung bar, Niagara emphasizes a searchable, vertically organized app list. On a narrow cover screen, the list stays compact; on the wider inner screen, its adaptive sections and widget layout can use the extra space without forcing a conventional grid. Dynamic icon scaling helps keep the interface proportionate as the available width changes.
What Niagara cannot replace
Niagara’s own support documentation confirms that Samsung’s taskbar is unavailable when Niagara is the third-party home app. Its list and widgets therefore serve as an alternative way to reach apps, not as a continuation of the system taskbar. If your decision depends on Samsung’s bottom-edge app row, Niagara is not a solution.
How to evaluate Niagara on your Fold
- Install Niagara and select it in Settings > Apps > Choose default apps > Home app.
- Test the cover screen first: open several frequently used apps and confirm that the list remains easy to scan at the narrower width.
- Unfold while an app is open and check whether the app, widgets and icon sizing transition in the way you expect.
- Try your keyboard, mouse or stylus if those are part of your Fold setup.
- Open and close apps repeatedly to judge animation behavior on your specific model and One UI version.
Choose Niagara when continuity, a non-grid interface and fold-aware scaling matter more than Samsung’s taskbar. Keep a record of your previous One UI Home layout so you can switch back without rebuilding it from memory.

Folio Launcher: the clearest persistent-dock substitute
Folio takes a different approach. Its documentation describes a dock that stays on the inner display, holds frequently used apps and can be arranged independently per page. That makes Folio the closest functional substitute for readers whose main requirement is a persistent, rearrangeable row of launch targets on the unfolded screen.
The distinction is important: Folio’s dock is implemented by Folio, not integrated with Samsung’s taskbar. Folio explicitly explains that selecting another home app stops Android from drawing the One UI taskbar. Its page is written for version 0.6.7, so treat that version context as part of the claim and recheck behavior after installing updates.
When Folio makes sense
- You want a persistent inner-screen dock rather than a purely list-based launcher.
- You prefer to arrange frequently used apps by page.
- You accept that the dock will not carry Samsung’s taskbar functions or system integration.
Folio setup checks
- Set Folio as the home app through Settings > Apps > Choose default apps > Home app.
- Arrange the dock with the apps you previously kept in the taskbar.
- Check each inner-screen page, not just the first one, because Folio allows page-specific arrangements.
- Fold and unfold while an app is open to see how the launcher behaves across displays.
- After any Folio or One UI update, verify that the dock remains persistent and that your page arrangements are intact.
Nova Launcher and Lawnchair: customization without taskbar parity
Nova and Lawnchair can still appeal to users who prioritize home-screen customization, icon layouts or familiar Android launcher controls. However, the cited Fold compatibility note lists both among launchers that lose the One UI taskbar. Their docks should therefore be treated as ordinary launcher docks, not as Samsung taskbar replacements.

The available material does not establish a fold-specific continuity feature set, a particular maintenance schedule, or a guaranteed inner-screen layout for either launcher. Test both displays on your exact Fold model before committing to a long-term setup.

Questions to test before keeping either launcher
- Does the home layout remain usable when moving between the cover and inner screens?
- Does the launcher preserve your preferred icon and widget arrangement at both widths?
- Are app-opening and app-closing animations acceptable to you?
- Can you reach your most-used apps as quickly as you did from the taskbar?
- Can you restore One UI Home without losing the Samsung workflow you still need?

Install and switch safely
Changing launchers is reversible, but a little preparation prevents an inconvenient return trip.
- Record your current layout. Photograph the cover and inner screens, note your dock apps, and write down any widgets or folders you rely on.
- Check the default-home path. On current Samsung software this is generally Settings > Apps > Choose default apps > Home app; labels may vary by One UI release.
- Set one launcher at a time. Do not change launchers while troubleshooting another home-screen problem.
- Test both postures. Launch apps from the cover screen, unfold while an app is open, fold back, and return home from each display.
- Test input and animation. Use your normal gestures, keyboard, mouse and stylus, then open and close several apps.
- Keep the fallback available. Leave One UI Home installed so you can restore the taskbar through the same Home app menu.
Troubleshooting common problems
The taskbar disappeared after installing a launcher
This is expected when the new launcher is the default home app. Open the Home app selector and choose One UI Home. The third-party launcher can remain installed if you want to compare layouts later, but it cannot draw Samsung’s taskbar while it is the active home app.
A third-party dock feels too different from the taskbar
Recreate only the workflow you actually use. Put your most frequent apps in Niagara’s preferred list or Folio’s inner-screen dock, then test whether you can reach them with the same number of actions. If the missing behavior is Samsung-specific app switching rather than simple app access, return to One UI Home.

Animations look less polished
Compare the same app-opening and app-closing sequence on One UI Home and the replacement launcher. Android Authority’s reported explanation points to animation APIs that Samsung does not expose fully to third-party launchers, so a setting inside the launcher may not be able to correct every transition.
An update changed the layout or dock
Retest after major One UI updates and after launcher updates. Niagara’s foldable claims are product documentation, and Folio’s dock description is tied to version 0.6.7; neither is a guarantee that every future combination of launcher, One UI version and Fold model will behave identically.
Bottom line for Galaxy Z Fold owners
There is no Android launcher in this comparison that replaces Samsung’s taskbar itself. Use One UI Home when the taskbar and Samsung multitasking are essential. Use Niagara when a fold-aware, non-grid interface and continuity are worth giving up the taskbar. Use Folio when a persistent inner-screen dock is the specific behavior you want. Nova and Lawnchair are reasonable customization experiments, but they belong to the same no-taskbar category.
