Smart Launcher is the strongest documented choice for precise widget placement and flexible home-screen layouts. Niagara Launcher is better for a deliberately minimal screen that keeps several widgets in a compact stack. Nova Launcher remains a familiar replacement home screen with extensive customization history, but you should verify its current maintenance and Android-version compatibility before choosing it. Microsoft Launcher fits people who want Microsoft’s Android experience and a straightforward default-launcher setup rather than unusually deep widget design controls.
This is a feature-based guide, not a speed test. No independent study or hands-on benchmark establishes that any of these launchers is the fastest or universally best. Android versions, manufacturer skins and the implementation of each widget can change how the same launcher behaves.
What an Android launcher changes
Android’s launcher is the app that draws the home screen, app pages, dock, app list and many gestures. Replacing it does not replace Android itself: your apps, accounts and widgets remain installed, while the launcher controls how those items are arranged and reached.

- Can you place and resize a widget precisely, or only snap it to a fixed grid?
- Can the grid change between pages, portrait and landscape orientations, or different screen sizes?
- Can several widgets share one compact stack?
- Are icon shapes, colors, themes and dock behavior configurable?
- Which functions are included in the free tier, and which require a paid upgrade?
- Does the launcher behave reliably on your Android version and manufacturer skin?
A launcher can provide the frame, but the widget itself still determines available sizes, refresh behavior and interaction. A beautifully configured layout cannot add controls that the widget developer did not expose.

Smart Launcher is the clearest choice when your priority is arranging widgets exactly where you want them. Its documented fluid-grid system is designed to let widgets and other home-screen items occupy more than a rigid set of snap points. That matters when you are balancing a calendar, weather panel, media controls and shortcuts without leaving large unused gaps.

A 2026 update says a stack can remember a preferred visible “cover” widget, while the 2026 build 011 post describes additional widget-related changes. Treat these as dated vendor statements: check whether a feature is in the stable channel, a beta channel or limited to particular devices before relying on it.

Smart Launcher’s migration guidance says app shortcuts depend on making Smart Launcher the default home app. If shortcuts appear unavailable, open Android’s default-app settings and select Smart Launcher as the Home app, then test the shortcut again. The same migration material described its dock as experimental at the time of publication, so dock behavior may differ by release.
Smart Launcher also documents backup integration for KWGT data and recommends KWGT and KWGT Pro for the best restore experience. This is useful if your design uses custom KWGT widgets: back up both the launcher arrangement and the widget configurations rather than assuming a launcher restore will recreate every third-party setting.
Who should choose it
Choose Smart Launcher if you want the most control over spacing, alignment, themes and multiple screen configurations, and you are willing to check release-channel notes when a particular feature matters. It is less compelling if you want a nearly empty screen with minimal interaction or if you do not want to manage a more configurable system.

Niagara Launcher takes a different approach: the home screen is intentionally streamlined, with quick access to apps and a compact area for widgets. Its official help documentation explains how to add multiple widgets through the widget controls and place them in a stack. That makes it a practical option when you want several panels—such as weather, calendar and music—without dedicating a full page to each one.
How Niagara’s stack approach works
- Open Niagara’s widget controls from the home screen.
- Choose the option to add a widget and select the first widget you want visible.
- Use the same control to add additional widgets to the stack.
- Switch between the stacked widgets using the launcher’s stack interaction, leaving the preferred panel as the one shown first when supported by your version.
The exact labels and gestures can vary with the current release and Android skin. If the stack controls or a visual option are missing, check whether the function is part of Niagara Pro. Niagara’s Pro documentation describes the paid upgrade as the way to unlock additional features, and the product’s terms and entitlements can change. Check the current official listing before paying; this guide intentionally does not quote a volatile price.
Who should choose it
Niagara is a good fit when reducing visual clutter matters more than placing every item on a free-form canvas. It is especially useful for a phone where you want several widgets available but do not want multiple home-screen pages. It is not the first choice for users who need dense dashboards, elaborate page-specific grids or extensive pixel-level positioning.
Nova Launcher: familiar customization, with a compatibility check
Nova describes itself as a replacement home screen, and its official FAQ covers common home-screen and widget questions. That makes it a familiar starting point for people moving from the stock launcher and looking for more control over pages, icons and layout behavior.
However, current suitability is time-sensitive. The available material does not establish a current development schedule, a guaranteed Android-version range or a measurable widget advantage over the alternatives. Before installing it on a recently updated phone, check the latest official app listing, release notes and user documentation for your exact Android version. Do not treat older guides as proof that every historical feature still behaves the same way.
When Nova makes sense
- You already know its page, icon and gesture model and want to preserve that workflow.
- Your desired widget layout fits the controls offered by the current release.
- You have confirmed that the launcher is maintained and compatible with your phone’s Android version.
If those checks fail, Smart Launcher offers more clearly documented current layout features, while Niagara offers a documented stack-first design.

Microsoft Launcher: a straightforward Microsoft-centered setup
Microsoft Launcher is appropriate for users who want Microsoft’s Android home experience and an officially documented path to making it the default. Microsoft Support explains how to set the launcher as the default home app and includes troubleshooting steps for widget behavior on some devices.
Set Microsoft Launcher as the default home app
- Install Microsoft Launcher from the current official Android app listing.
- Open the launcher and follow its setup prompts.
- When Android asks which home app to use, select Microsoft Launcher and choose the option to make it the default.
- If the prompt does not appear, open Android Settings, go to Apps, then Default apps, then Home app, and select Microsoft Launcher. Menu names can differ by manufacturer.
- Return to the home screen, add a widget and test it before importing a complex layout.
If a widget is blank, disappears, stops updating or cannot be resized, use Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance and check the manufacturer’s battery, permission and background-activity settings. The support material documents setup and problem-solving, not a comparative advantage in widget placement depth, so choose Microsoft Launcher for its ecosystem and workflow rather than assuming it offers the most flexible widget canvas.
Custom widget builders: where KWGT fits
A launcher controls placement and presentation; a widget builder controls what the widget looks like and does. KWGT is a relevant companion when you want a custom clock, dashboard, media panel or information card rather than the stock widget supplied by an app.

A launcher backup cannot reliably reconstruct a third-party widget’s internal preset, fonts or data permissions unless that widget app supports the restore process.
How to customize Android home-screen widgets step by step
1. Decide what the screen must show
Write down the information and controls you actually use: for example, today’s agenda, weather, a music controller and a timer. Remove items that merely look useful. Every widget consumes screen area, battery activity and visual attention.
2. Pick the layout model
- Choose Smart Launcher for free-form placement, fluid grids, themes and multiple screen arrangements.
- Choose Niagara for a compact stack of several widgets on a minimal screen.
- Choose Nova when familiarity is important, after checking current compatibility.
- Choose Microsoft Launcher when Microsoft’s home experience and documented default-app setup are the priority.
3. Make the launcher the default
Android may continue opening the stock launcher until you explicitly select the replacement. Use the launcher’s setup prompt or go to Settings → Apps → Default apps → Home app. Manufacturer labels can differ; search Settings for “default home app” if the path is not visible.

4. Add and resize widgets
- Long-press an empty area of the home screen.
- Tap Widgets.
- Select an app and drag its widget to the desired page.
- Long-press the placed widget and drag its handles to resize it.
- Open the launcher’s grid or layout settings when the widget cannot reach the position you need.
Some widgets expose only a few fixed sizes. If the resize handles stop early, that is usually a widget limitation rather than a launcher defect.
5. Build a stack when space is limited
Use Niagara’s documented multi-widget stack workflow or the stack feature available in your Smart Launcher release. Put the widget you want to see first in the preferred cover position, then verify that switching between panels works with one hand and does not require a gesture you frequently trigger accidentally.
6. Style the screen
Apply icon, color and theme changes after the geometry is stable. Changing the theme first can make it harder to see whether a widget is misaligned. Keep text contrast high enough to read over the wallpaper, and avoid placing interactive controls against busy images.
7. Back up before experimenting
Export the launcher layout where the app supports it. For custom widgets, back up the widget-builder presets separately. After restoring, test every interactive widget: calendars, media controls, task toggles and weather panels may require permissions or account sign-in again.

Common problems and fixes
The launcher does not stay selected
Reopen Settings → Apps → Default apps → Home app and select the launcher again. Some manufacturer software resets the default after an update, a system cleanup or a work-profile change.
A widget is missing or cannot be resized
Confirm that the widget app is installed, that you are editing the correct home page and that the widget supports the requested size. Restart the launcher only after checking those basics; clearing launcher data can erase your arrangement.

A widget is blank or stops updating
Open the widget’s app, sign in if required and review permissions. Then check Android’s battery and background-activity controls. Microsoft specifically documents widget troubleshooting for some devices, and similar manufacturer restrictions can affect other launchers.
Widgets overlap after changing orientation
Use a launcher that documents separate portrait and landscape arrangements, such as Smart Launcher’s described multi-setup approach, and verify that the feature is available in your current channel. Otherwise, reduce widget sizes or reserve a separate page for landscape use.
A restored layout has empty widget boxes
Install the original widget apps first, restore their data where supported and then restore the launcher layout. For KWGT, restore the KWGT presets separately; the launcher backup alone may not contain them.

Identify the widget that refreshes most often, then reduce its update frequency if the app allows it. Keep in mind that the launcher is only one part of the cost: weather, news, fitness and location widgets can perform background work independently.
What the evidence does—and does not—show
The documented features support a practical division of labor: Smart Launcher has the clearest published case for detailed layout control; Niagara has the clearest stack-oriented workflow; Nova is a familiar option requiring a current compatibility check; and Microsoft Launcher provides documented setup and troubleshooting within Microsoft’s Android experience.
There is no comparable independent statistic for widget quality, customization depth, performance or user satisfaction across these launchers. Smart Launcher announced 50 million Google Play downloads in April 2026, but that company-published adoption figure does not measure widget capability or prove superiority. Treat all four choices as device- and workflow-dependent, and verify current release notes, Android compatibility and premium entitlements before committing to a setup you need to keep for years.
