For gestures that launch apps or launcher actions, Nova Launcher is the clearest fit among these three. Niagara Launcher takes a different approach: its button and app pop-ups provide shortcut access within a minimal, list-centered home screen. Microsoft Launcher documents ordinary long-press app shortcuts and productivity features, but the cited support material does not establish a comparable custom gesture system. These recommendations reflect documented features, not hands-on speed or reliability testing.

What “customizing shortcuts” can mean

When choosing an Android launcher for shortcuts, first decide what you want the shortcut to do. The term can refer to several different interactions, and the launchers below do not offer identical versions of them:

  • Assign a gesture to an app or launcher action. For example, a swipe on the home-screen desktop could launch an app. Nova documents this kind of gesture assignment for Nova Actions and apps.
  • Open an app’s own shortcut actions. Some apps expose actions through their icon or a pop-up. Niagara documents access to app shortcuts through its pop-ups, and its Button can be assigned an app or, with Pro, certain additional actions.
  • Use the standard app shortcut menu. Microsoft documents long-pressing an app shortcut on the home screen or in the app drawer. That is useful shortcut interaction, but it is not the same thing as assigning a swipe gesture to launch an app.
  • Change how apps are arranged and reached. A launcher can replace the home-screen layout and change the route to apps without giving every icon a custom gesture. Niagara’s list-based design is an example of a different access pattern from a conventional grid-oriented layout.

Those distinctions matter because a launcher may support shortcuts without supporting the specific gesture you have in mind. A request phrased as “open an app directly by swiping on an icon” appears in Niagara’s feedback forum, but a feature request is not evidence that Niagara currently provides that behavior. Its documented swipe and pop-up actions are described below separately. The request was published July 15, 2025, and is best treated as an example of a desired interaction, not a feature announcement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It also helps to distinguish a shortcut to an app from a shortcut to an action inside that app. A launcher gesture that opens an app is one kind of shortcut; exposing an app’s own available actions is another. Whether those actions appear depends on the app and the launcher interaction being used. The documentation here supports specific routes—Nova gestures, Niagara pop-ups and Button actions, and Microsoft long-presses—rather than a promise that every app offers the same menu or actions.

At a glance: which launcher fits your shortcut style?

Launcher Documented shortcut approach Cost or tier information in cited sources Android requirement stated in cited source Best fit
Nova Launcher Desktop gestures can start Nova Actions or apps. The official page names pinching, swiping, and two-finger swiping. Free to install; Prime is described as available by yearly subscription or lifetime purchase. Prices are not stated on the cited page. Not stated on the cited product page. People who specifically want gestures assigned to apps or launcher actions and a customizable home-screen setup.
Niagara Launcher The Button can launch an app; app pop-ups expose app shortcuts. Pro adds more Button assignments, a swipe-up secondary action, and pop-up folders. Some Button actions are available in the free version; the cited help and feature pages identify additional actions as Pro features. Prices are not stated. Not stated on the cited help pages. People who prefer a minimal, list-centered home screen and want app access through its Button and pop-ups.
Microsoft Launcher Microsoft documents long-pressing an app shortcut on the home screen or in the app drawer. Its support page does not establish a Nova-style custom gesture system. Not stated in the cited support page. Android 7.0 or higher. People interested in Microsoft-connected productivity content and standard app shortcut interaction.

The comparison is about documented capabilities, not a ranking of responsiveness, stability, or ease of setup on every phone. Feature details and prices can change; check each launcher’s current official information before installing or paying.

For a quick decision, start with the action rather than the brand. If you want a gesture on the desktop to launch a chosen app, Nova is the most direct documented match, with gestures listed as a Prime feature. If you want app shortcuts to appear in a pop-up or want an app available from Niagara’s Button, compare the free and Pro options. If a long-press menu and Microsoft productivity content are enough, Microsoft Launcher is worth considering, subject to its Android 7.0-or-higher requirement.

Nova Launcher: strongest documented choice for gesture assignments

What its gestures do

Nova Launcher’s official product page describes Nova as a home-screen replacement with customization for the desktop, app drawer, dock, folders, and icons. For shortcut customization, the key distinction is that Nova Prime supports gestures that start either Nova Actions or apps. The examples named on the page are pinching, swiping, and two-finger swiping on the desktop. That makes Nova the most direct match here if you want a gesture to launch an app or trigger a launcher action.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Nova Actions are launcher operations rather than app-specific actions. The product page establishes that they can be launched with gestures, but does not provide a full list of available actions or show every configuration screen. The exact choices you see may therefore depend on the current app version and setup; consult the current Nova interface rather than assuming every possible action is available.

The gestures named by Nova are desktop interactions. That distinction is useful when choosing a launcher: this is not simply a claim that every icon can be assigned any custom swipe. If your desired setup depends on a particular gesture direction, trigger, or action, confirm that the current Nova settings offer that exact combination before purchasing Prime. The official product description supports the general ability to launch apps or Nova Actions with gestures, but it does not enumerate every possible assignment.

What is free and what requires Prime

Nova says the launcher is free to install and identifies gestures as a Nova Prime feature. The same page describes Prime as available through a yearly subscription or a lifetime purchase. It does not state prices, so compare the current purchase options shown by Nova before deciding whether a one-time or recurring payment suits you. The page also lists notification badges and drawer folders among Prime features; those may matter if your goal is to organize app access as well as assign gestures.

Think of the free installation and the paid feature tier as separate parts of the decision. You can evaluate whether Nova’s home-screen approach suits your desktop, app drawer, dock, folders, and icons, but the cited feature list places gesture launching in Prime. If gestures are the main reason you are switching, verify the current Prime terms and available purchase choices first. Do not assume an old price or a one-time payment option will remain unchanged.

Important system-level limitation

A launcher controls the home-screen experience, but not every Android screen or navigation behavior. Nova’s official FAQ notes that the recents screen is tied to the stock launcher. If a launcher gesture works as expected but the app-switching or recents experience does not change with it, that distinction can explain why: the recents screen is not necessarily controlled by the replacement launcher.

This matters when assessing a launcher as a complete replacement for the phone’s default experience. Customizing home-screen access does not guarantee that system-managed screens will behave differently. Keep the scope of the feature in mind: Nova documents desktop gestures and launcher customization, while Android and the device maker may govern other parts of navigation.

Niagara Launcher: app pop-ups and a dedicated Button

How its shortcut routes work

Niagara’s design is list-centered rather than built around a conventional home-screen grid. Its documented shortcut options center on the Niagara Button and app pop-ups. The free version allows assigning an app to the Button, providing a direct route to a chosen app. Niagara’s help page on the Niagara Button explains that Niagara Pro adds assigning shortcuts and folders, a swipe-up secondary action, and pop-up folders.

Niagara’s Pop-ups help page says basic app pop-ups can be used to check notifications and launch an app’s shortcuts. Its Tips and Tricks page also describes swiping an app to the right to open app shortcuts or notifications. These are specific routes: opening an app’s shortcut list from its pop-up is not the same as assigning an arbitrary swipe on an icon to launch that app directly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That distinction can prevent a frustrating mismatch between what you expect and what the interface is designed to do. A pop-up can expose shortcuts associated with an app, while the Button is a separate launcher control that can be assigned an app. Niagara’s documented right-swipe behavior is described as opening shortcuts or notifications; it should not be paraphrased as a universal custom gesture assignment for launching any app.

Free versus Pro

If your main need is one frequently used app reachable from the Niagara Button, the help page says that assignment is available in the free version. If you want the Button to open shortcuts or folders, use a swipe-up secondary action, or use pop-up folders, Niagara identifies those options as Pro features. The Niagara Pro features page provides the vendor’s current Pro feature overview. Neither cited page supplies a price, so check the current in-app or official purchase details rather than relying on an assumed cost.

Before paying, identify which of those Pro additions you actually need. The free Button assignment covers launching an app, while assigning shortcuts or folders to the Button and using the listed secondary action or pop-up folders are paid-tier considerations. The available documentation does not establish a single price, nor does it justify assuming that every Niagara shortcut function is paid. Match the exact action to the tier description and confirm the terms in the current app.

Who should choose it

Niagara is the better match if you like its minimal, list-based approach and want app shortcuts surfaced through pop-ups or a dedicated button. It is not the clearest choice in this comparison for someone whose non-negotiable requirement is assigning a custom desktop gesture to launch any chosen app. The documented Button actions and app-pop-up behavior are useful, but should not be conflated with Nova’s explicitly listed desktop gesture launching.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its interaction style is also part of the choice, not just a visual preference. Readers who want a conventional grid and extensive desktop arrangement may prefer to evaluate Nova’s desktop, dock, folder, and icon customization. Niagara makes sense when a list-centered layout and its focused shortcut routes feel like a better way to reach apps. The cited material establishes these differing models, but does not provide a measured speed comparison between them.

Microsoft Launcher: standard app shortcuts and productivity content

Microsoft’s support page for Microsoft Launcher lists Android 7.0 or higher as a requirement and describes long-pressing an app shortcut on the home screen or in the app drawer. It also positions the launcher around home-screen customization and productivity across devices, including calendar, to-do, and Sticky Notes content.

The documented long-press interaction may be enough if you want to work with an app’s ordinary shortcut options and prefer Microsoft-connected content. However, the support material cited here does not document gesture assignments in the same depth as Nova’s product page. That absence is a limit of what these sources establish; it should not be turned into a blanket claim that no gesture option exists in any version or configuration. If custom gestures are the deciding feature, verify the controls in the current app before switching.

Check the Android requirement before investing time in a changeover: Microsoft lists Android 7.0 or higher. The page also supports a more specific productivity-oriented reason to choose it—calendar, to-do, and Sticky Notes content across devices—rather than presenting it as the most extensively documented option for gesture shortcuts. Its long-press behavior is a conventional way to interact with app shortcuts; it should not be treated as proof of a custom gesture-assignment feature.

Choose by the shortcut you actually want

If you want a swipe or pinch to launch an app

Start with Nova. It is the only launcher in this comparison whose cited official product page specifically lists gestures that launch apps or Nova Actions. Keep in mind that gestures are identified as a Prime feature, so confirm the current subscription or lifetime-purchase terms before building your setup around them.

Then check two details before committing: whether the gesture types listed by Nova match the interaction you want, and whether the Prime option currently offered is acceptable to you. The product page names pinching, swiping, and two-finger swiping on the desktop, but does not spell out every possible gesture-to-action pairing. If you are aiming for a precise behavior rather than general gesture support, confirm it in Nova’s current settings.

If you want quick access to an app’s built-in actions

Consider Niagara’s pop-ups. Its help material describes launching an app’s shortcuts from a pop-up, with a right-swipe on an app also described as a way to open shortcuts or notifications. If the desired action is a dedicated button, check whether the free app assignment is sufficient or whether the shortcut or folder assignment you want is one of the Pro features.

Be specific about whether you want to open the app itself, see its shortcut actions, or check notifications. Niagara documents these as distinct uses of its Button, pop-ups, and right-swipe interaction. That specificity also makes it easier to check whether you need Pro: the free tier’s documented Button assignment launches an app, while additional Button assignments and pop-up folders are listed as Pro features.

If you want a different home-screen organization

Choose based on the layout and workflow you prefer, not just on the word “shortcut.” Nova offers customization across the desktop, app drawer, dock, folders, and icons. Niagara favors a list-based home screen and routes access through app pop-ups and its Button. Microsoft emphasizes customization alongside calendar, to-do, and Sticky Notes content. These are different interaction models, not interchangeable implementations of one shortcut feature.

A grid-oriented setup may be familiar if you already organize apps across desktop pages, folders, and a dock. Niagara’s list-centered approach changes how you browse and reach apps. Microsoft may be appealing if its productivity content is relevant to the way you use your phone. None of those differences establishes which launcher is faster or easier for every person; the right fit depends on whether you prefer the arrangement and route to apps.

If you need long-press options and Microsoft productivity content

Microsoft Launcher is the documented fit among these choices for ordinary long-press interaction, provided the phone meets its stated Android 7.0-or-higher requirement. Do not select it expecting the same specifically documented gesture-assignment capabilities as Nova without first checking the current app.

If you are deciding whether to pay

Compare the paid feature against the exact shortcut you plan to use, not against a general promise of “more customization.” Nova identifies gestures as a Prime feature and describes yearly subscription and lifetime purchase routes. Niagara identifies particular Button and pop-up additions as Pro features, while its free Button assignment can launch an app. The reviewed product and help pages do not provide prices for those tiers, so consult current vendor or in-app purchase details. Microsoft’s cited support page does not state a price or tier for its documented long-press interaction.

Check navigation compatibility on your phone

Third-party launchers do not control every system behavior, and gesture navigation or the recents screen can be affected by Android or a device maker’s implementation. Niagara’s help article on gesture navigation issues discusses compatibility concerns in this area. Treat that as a device- and OS-dependent caveat, not proof of a universal current defect: the experience may differ between phones and software versions.

  • Try the launcher on the device where you intend to use it, rather than inferring reliability from another phone’s experience.
  • Test both the launcher interaction you care about and system navigation, including the recents screen.
  • If a system gesture behaves differently than expected, distinguish the launcher’s own assigned gesture from Android or manufacturer navigation behavior.
  • Check the launcher’s current support material for your device and software version if the issue prevents normal navigation.

These checks are particularly useful because a desktop gesture and a system navigation gesture can sound similar but belong to different parts of the phone’s experience. A launcher may handle an action on its home screen, while Android or a device maker may control navigation and the recents screen. Testing both on your own device helps identify which behavior is involved, without assuming that a compatibility concern applies to every phone.

Nova’s FAQ adds a concrete example of this boundary: it says the recents screen is tied to the stock launcher. Niagara’s support article separately discusses third-party launcher compatibility with gesture navigation. Together, these are reasons to test the whole interaction you rely on—not evidence that any one launcher is universally unreliable or that a specific problem will occur on your device.

Practical recommendation

For gesture-driven shortcuts, choose Nova Prime based on the documented app and Nova Actions gestures. For a list-first home screen with app shortcuts in pop-ups and an assignable Button, choose Niagara, checking the free-versus-Pro distinction against the exact action you need. For long-press app shortcuts combined with Microsoft productivity content, consider Microsoft Launcher, while recognizing that the cited support page does not establish an equivalent gesture-assignment system. No hands-on performance comparison is established here, so test navigation and shortcut behavior on your own device before relying on a particular interaction.

A sensible order is to write down the intended action, confirm which launcher documents that route, check the relevant paid tier and Android requirement, then try the behavior on the phone you plan to use. This avoids paying for a feature that does not match your intended gesture or choosing a launcher based only on a broad label such as “shortcut support.” If a system navigation issue appears, evaluate the launcher gesture and the phone’s own navigation separately.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Android launcher is best for gestures that launch apps?

Nova is the clearest documented fit among these three. Nova’s official product page says Nova Prime supports gestures that start apps or Nova Actions, including pinching, swiping, and two-finger swiping on the desktop. Gestures are listed as a Prime feature.

Can Niagara Launcher open an app’s shortcuts?

Yes. Niagara’s help page says basic app pop-ups can be used to launch an app’s shortcuts, and its tips describe swiping an app to the right to open shortcuts or notifications. That is different from assigning an arbitrary swipe on an icon to launch the app directly.

Does Niagara Launcher require Pro to assign an app to its Button?

Niagara’s help says the free version lets you assign an app to the Button. Pro adds assigning shortcuts and folders, a swipe-up secondary action, and pop-up folders. Check Niagara’s current feature and purchase details for up-to-date terms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Microsoft Launcher support custom gesture assignments like Nova?

The Microsoft Support page cited here documents long-pressing an app shortcut on the home screen or in the app drawer, and lists Android 7.0 or higher as a requirement. It does not document gesture assignments at the same depth as Nova’s product page, so check the current app if custom gestures are essential.

Can a third-party launcher change Android’s recents screen or gesture navigation?

Not necessarily. Nova’s official FAQ says the recents screen is tied to the stock launcher, and Niagara’s help discusses device- and OS-dependent gesture-navigation compatibility concerns. Test the launcher and system navigation on your own phone rather than assuming behavior will be identical across devices.

How much do Nova Prime and Niagara Pro cost?

The cited official pages do not state prices. Nova describes Prime as available through a yearly subscription or lifetime purchase; Niagara identifies its Pro features but the cited help and feature pages do not give a price. Check the current vendor or in-app purchase details before buying.

The Bottom Line

Choose Nova if your priority is a gesture that launches an app or Nova Action; choose Niagara if you want its list-centered layout, app pop-ups, or Button; consider Microsoft Launcher for documented long-press shortcuts and Microsoft productivity content. Confirm paid-tier details and test navigation on your phone, since system behavior can vary by device and OS.
