Files by Google is the best starting point for most people who need simple local browsing, search, cleanup, and SD-card copies. Choose a different app when you need direct cloud accounts, network shares, dual-pane transfers, extensive archive support, or more control over how storage is displayed. No single Android file manager is best for every combination of phone storage, removable media, cloud drives, and remote servers.
The shortlist below is based on capabilities described in Google documentation and recent editorial comparisons, not controlled speed, reliability, security, or battery testing. Feature lists, supported providers, prices, advertisements, and update dates can change, so confirm the current Google Play listing before installing.
Quick recommendations by workflow
| Your main task | Best starting choice | Why it fits | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Browse, search, rename, clean up, and copy local files | Files by Google | Google documents browsing, searching, renaming, cleanup actions, and moving or copying files to an SD card. It supports Android 8.0 and later. | Those help pages do not establish support for every cloud, server, archive, or advanced power-user workflow. |
| Move files between cloud and network locations in two panes | Solid Explorer | Recent comparisons describe dual-pane operation, cloud connections, and network workflows. | Confirm the exact provider, protocol, pricing, and current Android compatibility in the live listing. |
| Connect many storage types and extend the app with plugins | MiXplorer | Android Authority describes local and external media, LAN, Google Drive, OneDrive, other cloud services, and an extensible plugin model. | These are published feature descriptions, not an independent compatibility test; verify each service you need. |
| Analyze phone storage and find large files | CX File Explorer | Android Authority describes storage analysis and large-file discovery, alongside cloud or network functions in comparison coverage. | Check the current listing for the exact integrations and feature set. |
| Use local network or physical external storage without Google Drive browsing | Material Files | The cited 2025 review describes an open-source app with local-network and physical-media support. | The same review says it does not browse Google Drive, so it is a poor fit if Drive access is essential. Recheck this older statement. |
| Use tree navigation, dual panes, OTG, network protocols, cloud services, and archives | X-plore | The 2026 comparison lists broad technical feature coverage. | Interface complexity and donation or paid details may matter; verify current terms. |
This table is a fit guide, not a performance ranking. The freshest broad comparison, published by iTechGuides on August 16, 2026, says its ordering is based on official listings and platform documentation rather than hands-on benchmarks.

“Best” becomes clearer when you list the locations and operations you actually use. A manager may be excellent at local folders yet unsuitable for a remote server, or offer cloud buttons that do not include your provider. Evaluate these axes separately instead of counting features.

Storage locations
- Internal storage: camera folders, downloads, documents, app-created files, and shared media.
- Removable storage: a microSD card, where the phone has a card slot and Android and the app support it.
- USB storage: a USB-C OTG flash drive or card reader, provided the phone, adapter, drive, file system, and app work together.
- Cloud storage: named providers such as Google Drive or OneDrive; support must be checked provider by provider.
- Network storage: a desktop, NAS, or server reached through protocols such as SMB, SFTP, FTP, or WebDAV.
How you move files
Single-pane navigation is usually easiest for opening and organizing files in one location. Tabs reduce backtracking when you switch among several folders. A dual-pane layout is valuable when the common action is copy or move: one pane can show local storage while the other shows a cloud, server, SD card, or USB drive.
File types and archives
If you routinely receive compressed files, check the exact archive formats and whether the app can browse an archive, extract selected items, create a new archive, or encrypt it. “Archive support” in a feature list can mean only one of these operations.
Control and privacy
Look for the permissions the app requests, whether advertising or in-app purchases are present, whether encryption is offered for archives or transfers, and whether root access is optional. Root-related controls are relevant only to users with rooted devices and can expose protected areas or create destructive possibilities. Do not assume that a manager claiming root support can bypass every Android restriction on every phone.

Maintenance and compatibility
Check the listing’s last update, Android version requirements, changelog, developer identity, support responses, and provider-specific notes. Prices and availability are regional and can change. A feature reported in a 2025 review may no longer be present, while a newer listing may add or remove integrations.
Files by Google: the practical default
Google’s Files by Google help documentation says the app works on Android 8.0 and up. It documents browsing and searching files, renaming them, cleanup actions, and moving or copying files to an SD card. That combination makes it the sensible first installation for someone who mainly wants to find downloads, inspect folders, remove unwanted items, or move files between phone storage and a supported card.
Rank #2
- Dual Connectors: The USB-C port can only work on phones/tablets with OTG function. Please make sure your smartphone with OTG function and reversible type-c interface. The other end is USB 3.0 port connecting regular USB devices.[Not for iPhone]
- Important: Default format of the drive is EXFAT as this is the format recognized by the smartphones and tablets. These drives are only compatible with C-Port enabled mobile phones & computers only. While formatting the drive keep a check on the drive format
- Fast Speed: High-speed USB 3.0 flash drive for fast data transfer, backwards compatible with USB 2.0,easy to complete the storage and transport functions. You can use it to transfer your computer file or access files from Type-C devices, store and share your photos, videos and music in a simple and reliable way

- Package includes: 1 pc 256G USB C & USB Multi-function Flash Drive
Where it excels
- Simple local browsing without a large configuration burden.
- Search when you know a filename or need to locate content across common folders.
- Cleanup-oriented suggestions for reclaiming space.
- Basic rename, copy, and move operations.
- SD-card copies when the phone has a supported card slot and the operating system grants the required access.
Where to look elsewhere
Do not select Files by Google solely because you expect it to cover every cloud or server. The cited help material establishes the local and SD-card functions above; it does not establish a complete dual-pane, SMB, SFTP, WebDAV, or multi-provider workflow. If your routine is “download from a remote share, compare with a cloud folder, then copy to USB,” start with an app whose current listing explicitly names those services and a two-location interface.
Solid Explorer: a dual-pane candidate for connected storage
Recent comparison coverage presents Solid Explorer as a broad power-user option for dual-pane, cloud, and network workflows. Its appeal is the ability to keep two locations visible while transferring files, rather than repeatedly navigating backward and forward through a single hierarchy.

Who should consider it
- People who regularly copy between internal storage and a cloud account.
- Users working with a NAS, desktop share, or other network location.
- Anyone who prefers tabs or panes over a minimal one-screen file list.
- Users who need more archive and transfer controls than a basic manager offers.
Checks to make first
Confirm your exact cloud provider and network protocol in the current Google Play description. “Cloud support” is not a universal standard: an app may support one provider through an official integration but not another, or support SMB while omitting SFTP or WebDAV. Review the current regional price, trial or purchase terms, advertising, and Android requirement before relying on it for work.
MiXplorer: extensibility for mixed storage
Android Authority describes MiXplorer as supporting local storage, external media, LAN, Google Drive, OneDrive, and other cloud services, with plugins that add functions. This makes it attractive when your storage map is more complicated than “phone plus one cloud.”
Good fit for
- Users with several cloud accounts or a mixture of cloud, LAN, and physical media.
- People willing to configure plugins for additional capabilities.
- Technical users who want an interface and feature set they can tailor.
Trade-offs
Extensibility can increase setup and troubleshooting time. Before committing, verify whether the provider you use is supported directly, through a plugin, or not at all; whether the plugin is maintained; and whether the current distribution channel and Android version match your device. The feature description is editorial reporting rather than a test of every provider or transfer mode.

CX File Explorer: storage analysis with broader connections
Android Authority describes CX File Explorer as emphasizing storage analysis and discovery of large files. Comparison sources also describe cloud or network functions, making it a candidate for people whose first problem is “what is consuming my phone’s space?” rather than advanced server administration.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Choose it when
- You want a visual overview of storage use and large-file candidates.
- You prefer a relatively straightforward navigation model.
- You may connect to cloud or network locations but do not need the most elaborate pane-and-plugin system.
Confirm the live listing for the current cloud providers, protocols, archive operations, ads, and purchase terms. Storage-analysis labels can differ between versions, so treat the current interface as authoritative.
Material Files: open-source and physical-media focused
Material Files is described in the cited 2025 Android Authority review as open source and capable of working with local network or physical external storage. The same review says it does not browse Google Drive. That distinction is decisive: it can be a good match for local, LAN, SD, or USB tasks, but not for a workflow centered on Drive folders.
Use it for
- Local file management with a relatively focused interface.
- Transfers involving supported physical media.
- Local-network access when the required connection is available.
Do not assume
Open-source status does not automatically mean every protocol, cloud provider, or protected directory is supported. Because the Google Drive statement comes from a 2025 editorial review, recheck the current listing if that integration would change your choice.
X-plore: broad technical coverage and a denser interface
The 2026 comparison lists X-plore with dual-pane and tree navigation, USB OTG, network protocols, cloud services, and archive support. That breadth can suit a technically minded user who wants many locations visible in one tool.
Rank #4
- USB-C 2-in-1 storage OTG: The Lexar JumpDrive Dual Drive D40E features USB Type-A and Type-C connectors in a slim, portable form factor for easy device compatibility
- Transfer speeds up to 100MB/s: Based on internal testing, performance may vary depending upon the host device, interface, and usage conditions. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes
- Plug and Play: Widely compatible with USB Type-C smartphones, tablets, laptops, Macs, and traditional Type-A devices, no software installation required. The 360° swivel design allows for easy switching between connectors without the hassle of losing a cap
- Durable & Compact: The Lexar D40E USB memory stick features a metal enclosure, withstands temperatures from 0° to 50° C (32°F to 122°F), and is lightweight at 26g with dimensions of 70.4 x 16.9 x 11.7mm
- Security & Warranty: Securely protects files using an advanced security software solution with 256-bit AES encryption. Backed by a Lexar 3-year limited warranty
The cost of breadth is learning time. Tree views, protocol settings, archive commands, and donation or paid options can be less approachable than a basic manager. Inspect screenshots, permissions, current pricing, and the exact protocols and cloud services named in the live listing before making it your everyday tool.
Cloud storage: how to choose without guessing
When someone asks for the best Android file manager for cloud storage, the deciding question is not whether the app says “cloud.” It is whether it connects to the service and operation you need.
- Name every account. Write down Google Drive, OneDrive, another provider, or a self-hosted service instead of relying on a generic cloud label.
- Define the transfer. Decide whether you need upload, download, rename, delete, folder creation, archive extraction, offline copies, or two-way copy.
- Check the protocol or integration. A provider-specific login, WebDAV endpoint, SMB share, SFTP server, and FTP server are different connection methods.
- Check the interface. If you compare two locations often, require tabs or dual panes; if you open cloud files occasionally, a simpler single-pane app may be preferable.
- Test a non-critical folder. After installation, connect without granting more access than necessary and copy a few disposable files before moving an important library.
MiXplorer and Solid Explorer are the strongest candidates in the cited comparisons for mixed cloud and network work, while Files by Google is the clearer choice for documented local operations. Material Files should be excluded when direct Google Drive browsing is essential, unless a current listing shows that this limitation has changed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Using an SD card or USB-C OTG drive
Removable storage is optional, not a requirement for Android file management. A microSD card helps only on phones with a card slot and compatible system support. A USB-C OTG flash drive or card reader requires a compatible phone, adapter or connector, drive, file system, and app.
- Connect the card or OTG drive and unlock the phone.
- Accept the system or app prompt only if you recognize the device.
- Open the external-storage location in the file manager.
- Copy a small, replaceable file first and open it from the destination.
- Use the system’s eject or unmount control before disconnecting when it is offered.
Files by Google’s documented SD-card operations cover moving and copying files, but they do not guarantee that every phone, card, drive, or adapter combination will work. If the storage does not appear, check physical connection, OTG support, power requirements, file-system compatibility, and whether the app has been granted access.
Best Value
- 2 in 1: USB C + USB 3.0, 32GB usb c flash drive has dual ports, usb 3.0 port is applied to all devices which have usb 3.0 interface and usb c port is widely used in all Android smartphones with OTG function
- High Speed USB 3.0: Read speed up to 90 MB/s, Write speed up to 30 MB/s, the speed of USB 3.0 interface is faster than USB 2.0, save time to wait, increases work productivity. Note: Speed will be limited if you use the USB key in the USB 2.0 interface
- Large Compatibility: The USB 3.0 Connector is compatible with USB 3.0 & USB 2.0 backward USB 1.1 devices, such as Laptop, Desktop, Car Audio, Tablet, TV, Speakers, Projector. USB-C port is compatible with all Android Smartphones
- Expand Storage: Good performance in storing, transferring and sharing digital data with families, friends, colleagues, customers. It can expand the capacity of smartphone, you can watch movies or share pictures when you go on vacation with your family
- Note: Make sure your smartphone is equipped with OTG function and need to open OTG function in Settings when you plug memory stick, then you can transfer easily data bewteen different devices
Android access limits and protected folders
Android storage-access restrictions mean no file manager can promise unrestricted access to every folder on every device. A directory may be protected by the operating system, an app-specific permission, the manufacturer’s software, or a user-selected document-provider boundary. A manager’s claim of root or advanced access should therefore be treated as device- and configuration-dependent, not as a universal bypass.
When an operation fails, distinguish among three cases: the app cannot see the location; Android shows a permission request that was declined; or the location is protected and unavailable under the device’s current rules. Recheck the exact folder, use the system picker when prompted, and avoid granting broad access merely to make an unfamiliar operation work.
A safe setup and transfer procedure
- Install from the current official store listing. Read the Android requirement, update date, permissions, pricing, ads, and in-app purchase notes.
- Start with the narrowest permissions. Grant access to the files or storage location the app needs, not unrelated data.
- Connect one location at a time. Add a cloud account, server, SD card, or USB drive and confirm that its folders load before adding another.
- Test read access. Open a known file and verify that its size and filename are correct.
- Test a copy. Copy a disposable file in the intended direction and open the destination copy.
- Test the reverse direction separately. Upload, download, or copy back only after the first operation succeeds.
- Check the result before deleting the source. Compare filenames, file sizes, and—when the app provides it—checksums or transfer status.
- Disconnect safely. Sign out of accounts you no longer use and unmount removable media when Android offers that control.
Troubleshooting common failures
The app cannot see a folder
Reopen the location through Android’s system file picker, inspect the app’s granted permissions, and check whether the folder is protected. If another app created the files in an app-specific directory, Android may prevent a general-purpose manager from browsing it.
Cloud login works but files do not appear
Confirm that the app supports the exact provider rather than a similarly named service. Reauthenticate, check network connectivity, and verify whether the app offers online browsing or only an import/export handoff. Do not infer support from a generic “cloud” feature label.
A network share will not connect
Verify the protocol, server address, port, username, password, and whether the phone is on the same network or can reach the server remotely. SMB, SFTP, FTP, and WebDAV settings are not interchangeable. If the app lists a protocol but does not connect, check server-side permissions and firewall rules before changing Android permissions.
Copying to SD or USB fails
Check that the media is mounted, has free space, uses a supported file system, and is not write-protected. Try a small file, reconnect the drive, and confirm that the phone and adapter support OTG. If the destination is visible but read-only, Android or the media’s format may be imposing the limit.
An archive will not open
Check the archive format and whether the app supports browsing, extraction, or encryption for that format. A damaged or password-protected archive may require a different tool even when ordinary ZIP files work.
How to make the final choice
| Priority | Start with | Verify before settling |
|---|---|---|
| Minimal learning curve and local housekeeping | Files by Google | Whether its documented operations cover your cloud or server requirement. |
| Frequent two-location transfers | Solid Explorer or X-plore | Pane behavior, protocol support, current price, and interface comfort. |
| Many providers and extensibility | MiXplorer | Provider-specific support, plugin maintenance, and setup complexity. |
| Storage cleanup and large-file discovery | CX File Explorer | Current analysis views and the exact remote-storage integrations. |
| Open-source preference and physical or LAN media | Material Files | Google Drive availability and any other cloud requirement. |
Install one candidate, reproduce your real workflow with non-critical files, and keep it only if it handles the locations and operations you use without excessive permissions or friction. Published feature lists are useful for narrowing the field, but they are not proof of transfer speed, reliability, security, or ease of use on your particular phone.
