Start with Android’s Digital Wellbeing usage chart to see which apps, unlocks, and notifications are drawing your attention. Then choose one control that fits the problem: app timers for a daily limit, Focus mode for a work or study block, and Bedtime mode or Do Not Disturb for a quieter evening. These tools offer different kinds of boundaries; Google’s documentation does not rank their effectiveness or promise that any one will reduce your screen time.
Which Android feature fits your screen-time problem?
The most useful feature is the one that addresses the situation in which you tend to reach for your phone. A daily app limit is different from a temporary pause, and both differ from silencing interruptions. Start with the control that matches your friction point rather than enabling every setting at once.
| Your situation | Feature to try | What it controls | Key detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| You are not sure where your time goes | Digital Wellbeing usage chart | Screen time by app, times opened or unlocked, and notifications received | Availability varies by phone. |
| You want a daily boundary for one app | App timer | Access to a selected app after its daily allowance runs out | The timer resets at midnight; some work or school accounts might not support timers. |
| You want selected apps paused during a block of time | Focus mode | Selected apps and their notifications while Focus mode is active | You can activate it manually or schedule it, and a temporary break can unpause apps. |
| You want a recurring bedtime routine | Bedtime mode | A scheduled routine and optional screen changes | Setup paths and available options differ by phone. |
| You want fewer calls or app alerts at a particular time | Do Not Disturb or Modes | Which people or apps can interrupt you, and when | Some documented Modes instructions apply only to Android 14 and later. |
This is a comparison of what the controls do, not proof that one works better than another. Google’s Android Help pages describe settings and behavior but do not provide a comparative effectiveness study. Treat any change as an experiment in your own routine: notice the problem, apply a fitting control, and review whether it helped.
A useful distinction is whether you want to limit access, pause a particular group of apps for a while, or reduce interruptions. App timers address access after a daily allowance. Focus mode pauses the selected apps and notifications during an active period. Do Not Disturb and Modes filter interruptions from people or apps. Bedtime mode can combine an evening schedule with display options and, depending on the phone, Do Not Disturb. None of these controls is a universal lock on all phone use.

Use the usage chart to find a specific target
Digital Wellbeing can show screen time by app, how often you open or unlock the device, and how many notifications you receive. Google describes this information as available on some phones, so the feature and its presentation may not be identical on every Android device. See Google’s Digital Wellbeing instructions if you need the documented controls.
Open your device’s Settings and look for Digital Wellbeing. The chart gives you a starting point: identify an app whose use you want to change, or notice whether notifications and frequent checking are the issue. The chart reports activity; it does not itself block an app or establish that tracking will reduce use.
Consider the different signals separately. A high screen-time figure for one app may point toward a daily timer. A high number of device openings can suggest that checking frequency, rather than one long session, is the habit you want to examine. Many notifications may direct your attention to interruption controls or to pausing particular apps during a chosen block. The chart can help you choose a target, but it does not explain why you used an app or tell you which behavior you should change.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchIt can also help to name a specific goal before changing a setting. For example, you might want fewer interruptions during a study period, or a limit on one app after you have used it for the day. That is more actionable than trying to reduce every kind of phone use at once. Google’s documentation describes activity information and controls, not a prescribed target or a guaranteed result.
If you prefer a launcher shortcut, Google documents an option called “Show icon in the app list.” Its location may vary, so use the Digital Wellbeing screen in Settings as the reliable starting point rather than assuming every phone has the same menu layout.
Set a daily limit with an app timer
An app timer is the closest fit when you want a limit that applies across the day to a particular app. It is not a scheduled block: once the daily allowance is used, Android closes the app and dims its icon. Timers reset at midnight, and removing the timer restores access before then.
- Open Settings and go to Digital Wellbeing.
- Tap App timers.
- Select the app you want to limit.
- Tap Set timer, choose the daily allowance, and confirm.
The exact presentation can vary by device, but Google documents this sequence for the general app timer. Some work and school accounts might not support timers. If the option is missing, check whether the account type or device-specific software is responsible rather than assuming that all Android phones expose the same controls.
When the timer runs out, the app closes and its icon dims. If you decide the limit no longer fits, remove the timer to regain access before the midnight reset; doing so also removes the boundary you set. A timer is therefore useful as a clear daily limit, but it is not an irreversible lock.

Think of the timer as a daily allowance, not as a promise that you will stop using the phone altogether. It applies to the selected app, and it does not create the same kind of time window as Focus mode. If what you need is an app-free work block at a particular hour, Focus mode is the closer match. If you want to limit a particular app over the whole day, the timer is more directly suited to that purpose.
Because the app closes when the allowance runs out, it may interrupt an activity that is still in progress. Choose an allowance that makes sense for your intended boundary, and remember that the control can be removed. The documented behavior is a reminder and limit in the device settings, not an unchangeable restriction.
Limit a website in Chrome
Google also documents site timers for Chrome. This is a separate, browser-specific control, so do not assume it applies to websites in every browser.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open the Digital Wellbeing usage chart in Settings.
- Select Chrome.
- If needed, choose the option to show sites.
- Set a timer beside the site you want to limit.
Use this when the target is a particular site rather than all browsing in Chrome. Google’s instructions establish this path for Chrome; they do not establish equivalent site timers for other browsers.
The distinction matters if you want to address one website but still use Chrome for other purposes. A site timer is documented through Chrome’s entry in the usage chart; an app timer, by contrast, is for the selected app. Google’s instructions do not say that the Chrome site-timer process applies to another browser, so check the controls available on your device rather than assuming the same option is present elsewhere.
Pause distracting apps during a focused block
Focus mode is designed for a period when you want selected apps paused, along with their notifications. Unlike an app timer, it can be turned on for now or set to a schedule. Google’s instructions also include a “Take a break” option that temporarily unpauses the selected apps.
- Open Settings and go to Digital Wellbeing.
- Choose Focus mode.
- Select the apps you want paused while the mode is active.
- Turn Focus mode on immediately, or set a schedule for the block when you want it active.
Choose apps based on the interruption you are trying to prevent. Pausing an app also affects its notifications while Focus mode is on, so include only apps you are comfortable interrupting or pausing for that period. If you need a short exception, use Take a break to temporarily unpause apps. The break option means Focus mode is a practical boundary rather than a permanent barrier; details may vary by device.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFocus mode is a good fit when the same apps tend to pull you away during a recurring block, such as work or study time. Choose the apps first, then decide whether turning the mode on manually or scheduling it suits your routine. A manual start gives you control over the moment it begins; a schedule is useful if you want it to recur at particular times. The available schedule details may differ by device.

Before relying on the mode, consider whether you need notifications from any app you plan to pause. Focus mode pauses notifications from the selected apps while active, so selecting an app has a practical effect beyond hiding its icon or making it harder to open. The temporary “Take a break” option is there for an exception; it does not turn Focus mode into an always-on restriction.
Build an evening routine with Bedtime mode
Bedtime mode can follow a weekly schedule or turn on while the phone is charging during a selected time window. Depending on the device, its options can include Do Not Disturb and display changes such as grayscale, dimmed wallpaper, dark theme, or keeping the screen dark by turning off the always-on display. Not every phone exposes every option or uses the same path.
- In Settings, find Digital Wellbeing and open Bedtime mode or the bedtime schedule controls available on your phone.
- Choose a weekly schedule or the option to turn on while charging between selected times.
- Review the available options and enable only the display or interruption changes you want.
- Save the schedule and check that its days and time window match your routine.
For device-specific instructions, Google’s bedtime schedule help describes the documented options. A charging-based window and a weekly schedule are different triggers: choose the one that matches when you want the routine to begin, and check your phone’s Settings if the labels differ.
Screen options and interruption settings solve different parts of an evening routine. Grayscale, dimmed wallpaper, dark theme, and turning off the always-on display change aspects of the screen; Do Not Disturb, when available as an option, concerns interruptions. Review the options on your own phone and select only the changes that match what you want the routine to do. Google’s documentation does not establish that any one display change is more effective than another.
If you choose a weekly schedule, check the selected days as well as the start and end times so the routine matches the evenings you have in mind. If you choose the charging option, the selected charging-time window is the trigger instead. These are alternative setup approaches described by Google; the best fit depends on when you want Bedtime mode to begin.
Google also documents bedtime activity based on usage and sensor permissions. On Pixel phones, cough and snore information is not intended for medical use and does not guarantee results. Do not treat this feature as a diagnostic or health-monitoring service.
Use Do Not Disturb or Modes to filter interruptions
When the main problem is interruptions rather than time in a particular app, Do Not Disturb or Android Modes may be the better fit. These controls manage which people or apps can notify you, and can apply those filters on a schedule. Quick Settings provides access to the controls, although exact labels and options can differ between devices.

Bedtime mode and Do Not Disturb can overlap in purpose because bedtime mode may include Do Not Disturb as an option. If you need a general schedule for interruption filters, use the Modes or Do Not Disturb controls; if you want those filters as part of a bedtime routine with optional display changes, configure Bedtime mode. The available combination depends on the phone.
These interruption controls are not the same as pausing an app. Focus mode pauses selected apps and their notifications while it is active. Modes and Do Not Disturb instead concern which people or apps are allowed to interrupt you. Consider which interruption you actually want to filter before choosing: you may want to quiet notifications broadly, or specifically pause a few distracting apps for a work block.
Quick Settings can provide a faster way to reach interruption controls after setup, but the exact tile, label, and options depend on the device. If the documented steps do not line up with your screen, confirm the Android version and consult the phone maker’s instructions. In particular, some Google help steps are limited to Android 14 and later, so a missing menu does not necessarily mean the feature is available under a different name on every release.

For supervised accounts, check Parental controls
Children using supervised accounts have a distinct access path. For Android 15 and later, Google directs users to Parental controls for app activity and related Digital Wellbeing controls, rather than assuming the general adult-account navigation applies. See Google’s instructions for supervised accounts. Availability and exact settings can still depend on the device and account.
This caveat applies to the supervised account path; it should not be blended with the general Settings directions for other accounts. If you are setting up controls for a child, use the Parental controls guidance for Android 15 and later and check the account and phone requirements described there. A supervised account may not present the same navigation as the general Digital Wellbeing instructions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Adjust when the controls do not match your phone
Android Settings can vary by phone, Android release, region, and account type. If a menu does not match the steps above, search Settings for the feature name, open Digital Wellbeing directly, and consult the device manufacturer’s support information. A missing option may reflect a device or account limitation, not an error in the steps.
- The feature is not listed: Check whether your phone supports it and whether the instructions apply to your Android version.
- An app timer cannot be set: Some work or school accounts might not support timers; account type can affect availability.
- A scheduled feature is not behaving as expected: Recheck the selected days, time window, or charging condition, and confirm that you configured the intended mode.
- You cannot find the chart or shortcut: Start from Settings and look for Digital Wellbeing; the launcher icon is optional on phones that provide the “Show icon in the app list” option.
When troubleshooting, first identify which control you are trying to set up. An app timer is a daily allowance; Focus mode can be activated immediately or scheduled; Bedtime mode can use a weekly schedule or a charging-time window; and Do Not Disturb or Modes manage interruption filters. Checking the intended feature and trigger can prevent confusing one setting’s behavior with another’s.
Then check the limitations that apply to that specific control. The usage chart is available only on some phones. Work or school accounts might not support app timers. Some documented Modes instructions apply to Android 14 and later, and supervised accounts on Android 15 and later have a separate Parental controls path. Google also notes that navigation and options vary across devices, so the manufacturer’s support information may be necessary if your Settings screens differ.

These are controls, not a guaranteed outcome. Google’s documentation explains how to inspect activity and configure boundaries, but does not establish that they work equally well for everyone or provide a clinical recommendation. Use the chart to identify a behavior, select the matching setting, and decide for yourself whether the change addresses it. These documented tools are software settings; the instructions do not require a separate device or accessory.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which Android Digital Wellbeing feature should I try first?
Start with the usage chart to see screen time by app, device openings or unlocks, and notifications. Then choose the control that matches the issue: an app timer for a daily limit, Focus mode for a scheduled or manual pause, and Bedtime mode or Do Not Disturb/Modes for an evening routine or fewer interruptions. Google does not rank these controls by effectiveness.
What happens when an Android app timer runs out?
The selected app closes and its icon dims. App timers reset at midnight. Removing a timer restores access before the reset, so it is a daily boundary rather than an irreversible lock.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can I set a timer for a website instead of an app?
Google documents site timers through Chrome in the Digital Wellbeing chart: select Chrome, show sites if needed, and set a timer beside the site. The documented steps apply to Chrome; they do not establish an equivalent feature for every browser.
How is Focus mode different from an app timer?
An app timer sets a daily allowance for a selected app. Focus mode pauses selected apps and their notifications while active, and can be turned on manually or scheduled. Focus mode also includes a temporary “Take a break” option on supported devices.
Does Bedtime mode work only on a schedule?
Google documents both a weekly schedule and an option to turn Bedtime mode on while charging during a selected time window. Available triggers and screen options vary by phone.
Why can’t I find the same settings on my Android phone?
Feature availability and navigation can differ by phone, Android version, region, and account type. Some phones may not show the usage chart, some work or school accounts might not support app timers, and some Modes instructions apply only to Android 14 and later. Supervised accounts on Android 15 and later use the Parental controls path.

No. Google says cough and snore information on Pixel phones is not intended for medical use and does not guarantee results.
The Bottom Line
Use Digital Wellbeing’s chart to choose a specific behavior to address, then try the matching control: app timers for a daily app allowance, Focus mode for a focused block, or Bedtime mode and Do Not Disturb/Modes for an evening routine or fewer interruptions. The settings and availability vary by device and account, and Google does not promise a particular screen-time reduction. Review your own usage and adjust the control if it does not fit.
