The safest Android Auto setup is the one you finish before moving the car: block nonessential message alerts, limit who can interrupt you, silence attention-grabbing sounds, prevent unexpected media playback, and keep voice controls for genuinely simple tasks. These changes can reduce prompts, but they cannot make reading or typing messages while driving safe. If a message needs your eyes or hands, pull over and park first.
Start with a parked-car safety baseline
Put the vehicle in Park before connecting Android Auto or changing any notification setting. Google’s setup guidance specifically recommends allowing time to configure Android Auto before driving. Menu names and locations differ by phone maker, Android version, region, and vehicle, so use the Settings search box for Android Auto, Modes, Driving mode, or Do Not Disturb if the path below does not match your phone.
Android Auto features also depend on phone and vehicle compatibility. A setting that appears on one device may be absent on another, and a wireless connection may expose different controls from a wired connection. Make changes while parked, then test them without starting a trip.
1. Reduce message notifications and previews
Message pop-ups are among the easiest Android Auto distractions to remove. Android Auto can show incoming-message notifications, and you may be able to ask Gemini or Google Assistant to read a message or help compose a reply by voice. If seeing an alert tempts you to look at the screen, disable message notifications or previews before setting off.

Turn off message alerts in Android Auto
- Open the phone’s Settings app while the car is parked.
- Search for Android Auto and open its settings page.
- Open Notifications or a similarly named notification section.
- Turn off message notifications, message previews, or both, if those switches are available.
- Reconnect Android Auto or restart the vehicle connection if the change does not take effect immediately.
Google has described message previews as optional and indicated that some could appear only when the vehicle was stopped. That description dates from 2018, so do not assume every current phone, vehicle, or app follows the same stopped-car behavior. Treat previews as a choice you control, not as a safety guarantee.
Choose the least distracting compromise
If you must remain reachable, keep only the alerts that serve a clear purpose and remove previews. A banner without message text gives you less information to process than a full preview, while disabling alerts entirely removes the visual prompt. Decide this while parked, rather than changing it after a notification appears on the road.
2. Use Driving mode or Do Not Disturb to filter interruptions
Android’s Modes controls can automatically limit notifications while you are driving. Depending on the phone, the feature may be called Driving mode, appear under Modes, or be configured through Do Not Disturb. It can block or allow notifications from selected people and apps.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Configure a driving filter
- Open Settings and search for Modes, Driving mode, or Do Not Disturb.
- Create or select the driving mode.
- Set its automatic trigger, such as connection to the car or detection that you are driving, when your phone offers that option.
- Under people, allow calls or messages only from contacts who genuinely need to reach you.
- Under apps, block social, shopping, news, games, and other nonessential notifications.
- Review repeat callers, alarms, media controls, and other exceptions before saving the mode.
- Turn the mode on while parked and verify which alerts are actually suppressed.
The exact steps vary by manufacturer and may require a recent Android release. If your phone lacks a dedicated driving mode, configure a custom Do Not Disturb schedule or rule instead. Keep the exception list short: every allowed interruption is another event that can compete for your attention.
Preserve only necessary contact
There is no universally safest allow-list. Someone who drives for work may need a dispatch contact to reach them; another driver may need no live notifications at all. The useful test is whether an interruption is truly urgent or merely convenient. If a person can wait until you stop, do not add that person as an exception.

3. Silence message chimes and other notification sounds
A sound can pull your attention away from traffic even when you never look at the display. NHTSA advises activating Do Not Disturb, silencing notifications, or putting the phone away to reduce temptation. Android Auto versions and vehicle integrations differ, so the relevant switch may appear as a message-sound, notification-sound, or chime control rather than one universal label.
Find the available sound control
- With the car parked, open Android Auto settings on the phone.
- Search within the settings for notification sound, message chime, sound, or notifications.
- Disable message chimes if that option is present.
- If Android Auto has no separate control, use the driving mode or Do Not Disturb sound settings to silence notification alerts.
- Play a test message while parked to confirm whether the phone, vehicle, or both still produce a sound.
Silencing a chime does not stop a visual notification unless you also disable the visual alert or preview. Check both channels rather than assuming one switch controls the other.
4. Stop Android Auto from automatically playing music
Unexpected audio when the car starts can make you reach for the screen or wonder which app resumed playback. Google’s 2018 Android Auto announcement described media resuming when the car started, but current behavior and labels vary. Look for a setting such as Start music automatically instead of assuming every device uses that exact wording.
Disable automatic playback
- Park the vehicle and open the phone’s Settings.
- Search for Android Auto.
- Look under General, Notifications, or connection preferences for Start music automatically or a similar playback option.
- Turn the option off, then disconnect and reconnect Android Auto.
- Start the car again while parked to verify that playback stays stopped.
If the switch is missing, check the media app’s own auto-resume or autoplay setting and the vehicle’s infotainment preferences. Some cars remember the last audio source independently of Android Auto. Do not start changing settings while moving; make the vehicle stationary first.

5. Treat AI message summaries as optional
Android Auto may offer a Message Summary control under Android Auto settings > Notifications. Summaries are generated by AI and can be wrong. Google says availability varies by device, country, region, and language.
Decide whether summaries help or distract
- Turn summaries off if hearing a condensed message would prompt you to think about, respond to, or investigate the conversation.
- Leave them on only if needed for a genuinely time-sensitive communication and you can keep your attention on traffic.
- Never treat a summary as authoritative. An incorrect summary can omit context, reverse meaning, or create pressure to respond.
To check the control, open Android Auto settings, select Notifications, and look for Message Summary. If the option is not shown, your device, language, region, or account may not support it. Its absence is not an error you can fix with a universal menu path.

6. Use voice controls without assuming they eliminate distraction
Android Auto supports voice control for calls, messages, navigation, and media. It also locks out some actions, such as typing messages while the vehicle is moving. Those limits reduce manual interaction, but a hands-free interface is not automatically distraction-free.
Keep voice tasks short and predictable
- Use a simple voice command to start navigation, call a contact, play a known item, or hear a message when conditions permit.
- Stop the interaction if traffic becomes complex, visibility worsens, or you need to concentrate on a maneuver.
- Do not dictate a long message, resolve an argument, search through multiple results, or troubleshoot an app while driving.
- If the assistant misunderstands you, wait until parked instead of repeating increasingly complicated commands.
NHTSA describes distracted driving as “any activity that diverts attention from driving, including talking or texting on your phone, eating and drinking, talking to people in your vehicle, fiddling with the stereo, entertainment or navigation system—anything that takes your attention away from the task of safe driving.” Voice interaction can still create visual, manual, and cognitive distraction, even when your hands remain on the wheel.

How the main setup choices compare
Use the table to choose a configuration before a trip. “Urgent contacts” means contacts you deliberately allow through a driving filter; it does not mean every message is safe to answer on the road.
| Configuration | Interruption reduction | Urgent contacts can reach you | Message previews or chimes | Voice interaction required |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Full message notifications and previews | Lowest | Yes | Usually remain enabled where supported | Optional, but alerts may invite interaction |
| Notifications on, previews off, chimes off | Moderate | Yes | Text previews and chimes reduced where controls exist | Optional |
| Driving mode with a short allow-list | High | Only selected people or apps | Depends on Android Auto and mode settings | Usually optional |
| Driving mode plus Android Auto message notifications off | Highest for message interruptions | Only through channels you leave enabled | Disabled where the controls apply | Use only for simple, necessary tasks |
| Automatic media playback disabled | Reduces unexpected audio, not notifications | Unchanged | Unchanged | Not required to keep media stopped |
For most drivers, a short allow-list, no message previews, muted message chimes, and no automatic media playback provide a practical starting point. Adjust the allow-list to your circumstances rather than copying someone else’s phone setup.
Test the configuration before you drive
A setting is useful only if it behaves as expected in your car. Run this parked-car check after changing several controls:
- Connect Android Auto using the connection method you normally use.
- Have a trusted person send a test message and place a test call.
- Confirm whether a banner, preview, chime, vibration, or spoken notification appears.
- Start the vehicle and check whether music resumes automatically.
- Trigger the driving mode and verify which contacts and apps remain allowed.
- Test a short voice command, then stop using it if the assistant asks for a complex follow-up.
- Return the vehicle to Park before changing any setting that failed the test.
Test again after a major Android, Android Auto, vehicle-infotainment, or messaging-app update. Updates can add, rename, or relocate controls.

Troubleshoot common symptoms
Messages still appear after you disabled them
- Check both Android Auto notification settings and the phone’s driving mode or Do Not Disturb exceptions.
- Look for separate controls for banners, previews, spoken notifications, and sounds.
- Confirm that the mode is actually active when Android Auto connects.
- Disconnect and reconnect Android Auto while parked.
A chime sounds but no preview is visible
- Inspect vehicle infotainment sound settings as well as phone settings; the car may generate its own alert.
- Check whether a permitted app or contact has a separate notification category.
- Use Do Not Disturb sound controls if Android Auto does not expose a chime switch.
Music starts every time the car starts
- Search Android Auto settings for Start music automatically or an equivalent label.
- Check the audio app for autoplay or resume-on-connection behavior.
- Review the car’s source-memory or startup-media setting.
Message Summary is unavailable
Availability depends on device, country, region, and language. Confirm that Android Auto and the phone are supported and updated, but do not assume an unavailable control indicates a fault. You can still disable ordinary message notifications, previews, or driving-mode interruptions.
Voice commands keep demanding attention
Shorten the command, wait until traffic is uncomplicated, or stop the task and park. Repeating a misunderstood request while moving can create the same cognitive distraction the setting was intended to reduce.

NHTSA says sending or reading a text takes a driver’s eyes off the road for five seconds. At driving speed, that is enough time for the vehicle to travel a substantial distance without the driver watching the roadway. NHTSA’s direct advice is: “If you have to text, pull over to a safe location and park your car — only then should you read or send the text message.”
Android Auto can reduce prompts and provide hands-free controls, but it cannot remove the mental effort of composing a response, following a complicated conversation, or deciding what an unclear notification means. Do not use a notification preview, summary, voice reply, or lockout as permission to continue a task that is absorbing your attention.
Quick Recap
A practical pre-drive checklist
- Configure Android Auto while the vehicle is in Park.
- Turn off message notifications or previews if they tempt you to look.
- Enable Driving mode or Do Not Disturb with only necessary exceptions.
- Silence message chimes and other nonessential notification sounds where your phone and car allow it.
- Disable Start music automatically if unexpected playback distracts you.
- Review Message Summary as an optional, fallible AI feature, not a safety system.
- Use voice controls only for simple tasks and stop when traffic demands concentration.
- Park safely before reading, typing, or sending a message.
