The best Android Auto alternative depends on your car and what you need: a vehicle with Google built-in can run supported apps on its own display; Android Driving mode can reduce phone interruptions; and Bluetooth can handle calls or audio in compatible cars. None of these options is automatically a full replacement for Android Auto’s car-display interface, and hands-free controls do not eliminate distraction. Set up routes and media while parked, then keep interaction to a minimum while driving.

Which Android Auto alternative fits your car?

Option What it can do Main limitation Best fit
Google built-in Run supported Google apps, such as Maps, Gemini or Google Assistant, and apps from Google Play on the car’s infotainment system. Availability depends on the vehicle, region, language and data plan. Some online features need connectivity. A car that already includes compatible Google services.
Android Driving mode Limit interruptions such as calls and text messages while driving. Google’s help documentation does not establish it as a substitute for Android Auto’s car display, navigation and app interface. Drivers who mainly want fewer phone interruptions and can prepare navigation before departure.
Bluetooth Connect a compatible phone to the car for supported calling and audio features. Pairing alone does not provide a driving-optimized display; capabilities depend on the phone and vehicle. Drivers who need calls or audio in a compatible car.
Voice-guided navigation Provide spoken directions from a supported navigation app or a car’s built-in system. Available functions vary by app, platform and vehicle. Route entry should happen while parked. Drivers who can start a route before leaving and follow audio prompts.

Choose based on the system already in your car, whether you need navigation, calls, messages or only media, and how much interaction the option requires. Check your owner’s manual and the vehicle maker’s compatibility information for model-specific details.

Google built-in: the closest option to an in-car app system

Some compatible cars include Google services in the infotainment system. They can offer Google Maps, Gemini or Google Assistant, and apps from Google Play without relying on Android Auto projection from a phone. The available apps and functions vary by vehicle and region. Some online services need a car data plan or a phone hotspot; consult Google’s Google built-in setup guide and your vehicle documentation.

For calls and messages, Google’s car assistant setup instructions say to pair the phone over Bluetooth and enable notifications. The precise settings and supported features depend on the car.

Android Driving mode: reduce interruptions, not replace the car display

Google describes Driving mode as a way to limit interruptions such as calls and text messages while driving. Its Android help page does not establish Driving mode as a complete replacement for Android Auto’s navigation, car-display apps or interface. If you use it, set your destination before you leave and avoid handling the phone on the move.

Bluetooth: useful for calls and audio

If your car and phone support Bluetooth, pairing can provide a practical way to use supported calling and audio functions. Google’s Bluetooth setup instructions explain how to find and pair devices. In cars with Google built-in, Google also documents Bluetooth pairing for calls and messages in its car setup guide.

If an older car has no built-in Bluetooth calling, a compatible Bluetooth car speakerphone or hands-free car kit is a possible narrow solution for calls and audio. It does not add Android Auto’s navigation display or app environment. Confirm that any kit works with both your phone and vehicle; no specific product model is established here. A hands-free call still requires attention.

Navigation and media: prepare before moving

When using a supported navigation app, plan the route and enter the destination while parked. Google’s Android Auto navigation guide describes voice-guided directions and notes that typing a destination on the car display is restricted until the vehicle is in Park. Its media guide covers music and podcasts through car speakers; compatible apps and, for some services, subscriptions are required. These guides describe Android Auto features, not a guarantee that the same functions are available in every alternative or vehicle.

What “safer” phone use can and cannot mean

Android Auto includes voice controls, a simplified interface, apps curated for driving and restrictions on some actions while the car is moving. Google documents these as interface features intended to reduce interaction demands in its accessibility and lockouts guide. They do not establish that hands-free use eliminates cognitive distraction or that a phone mount makes tapping safe.

  1. While parked, connect or configure the system you plan to use.
  2. Enter your destination and choose any media before starting to drive.
  3. While moving, keep your attention on the road and minimize interaction with the phone and infotainment system.
  4. Follow local laws and the vehicle’s instructions. Google’s Android Auto setup guidance says to pay attention to road and driving conditions and obey applicable laws.

If you use Gemini in a car with Google built-in, Google cautions that it can make mistakes and should not be relied on for critical information or safety-related matters while driving. See Google’s guidance for Gemini or Google Assistant built into a car.
