If a Steam game fails on Linux, first determine whether a different Proton configuration can fix it. Keep the default tool, then test the game’s recommended Proton version or Proton Experimental on a per-game basis, check current ProtonDB reports, and update Steam, your distribution, graphics drivers and runtimes. If the game depends on Windows-only anti-cheat, DRM, a launcher, codecs or other middleware that Proton cannot support, changing Proton versions will not remove that dependency. In that case, Windows is the dependable fallback; cloud gaming or a maintained native Linux build may work when the exact title and features are supported.
The Steam Deck compatibility label is a useful clue, not a universal diagnosis. Steam’s own guidance still requires the game’s hardware and operating-system requirements to be met, while Steam Play only potentially enables some Windows-only titles on Linux.
What “incompatible with Proton” actually means
Proton is Valve’s compatibility layer for running many Windows games through Steam Play on Linux. It translates Windows graphics, input, audio and system calls rather than turning every Windows dependency into a Linux equivalent. A failure can therefore be temporary, configuration-specific or fundamental.
A temporary problem might be a regression in one Proton release, an outdated graphics driver, a damaged prefix, or a launch option that no longer matches the current game build. A fundamental block occurs when the title requires Windows middleware that does not function through Proton. Valve’s Steam Deck Verified criteria evaluate that middleware as well as the game executable, so a game can render correctly in a test yet still fail because of anti-cheat, DRM, a launcher, video codecs or another required component.

“Unsupported” on Steam Deck is a signal to investigate why the title received that label. It does not prove that every Linux configuration fails. Conversely, a “Playable” or apparently working report is not a guarantee for your distribution, GPU, game version or multiplayer mode.
Check requirements before changing Proton
Open the game’s Steam store and support information and compare its hardware and operating-system requirements with your system. Steam Support specifically advises checking those requirements and notes that Linux users may be able to use Steam Play for some Windows-only games. Steam Play does not waive a minimum GPU, CPU, memory, storage, controller or operating-system requirement.
- Confirm that your GPU is supported by the current driver available for your distribution.
- Check whether the game requires a separate launcher, account, kernel-level or other anti-cheat service, protected video playback, or a specific Windows runtime.
- Record the exact game version, distribution, GPU model and symptom. These details are essential when comparing community reports.
Classify the symptom
A crash after a game update, a black screen with audio, or a launcher that worked under an earlier Proton release points toward a version or local-configuration issue. An immediate anti-cheat rejection, a mandatory Windows launcher that cannot authenticate, or a protected video component that never initializes points toward a dependency Proton may not support. Do not spend hours changing versions before identifying which category fits.

Change one variable at a time and keep the setting scoped to the affected title. This preserves a known-good baseline for other games and makes the result reproducible.
- Leave the current default tool in place for a baseline. Launch the game once and note exactly when it fails: before the launcher, during loading, at the main menu, or when joining a multiplayer session.
- Open the per-game compatibility setting. In Steam, highlight the game in your Library, press the Menu button, and select Properties > Compatibility > Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool. This is Valve’s documented path for selecting a tool for one game.
- Test the game’s recommended Proton version. If the developer, Steam discussion or a current compatibility report identifies a particular release, test that release before trying unrelated versions.
- Test Proton Experimental when appropriate. Ubuntu’s troubleshooting guidance recommends Proton Experimental for certain failures. It can contain a fix that has not yet reached a numbered stable release, but it can also introduce regressions.
- Restart the game after each change. Record whether the result is a crash, a different error, a successful launch, or a partial fix such as working single-player but failing multiplayer.
Do not switch every title globally while diagnosing one game. A version that fixes one release can break another, and game updates can change which Proton build works. If a new version makes the result worse, return to the last working per-game selection.

When a Proton version change is worth pursuing
- The game worked before a Proton or game update and then stopped.
- Reports for your exact game build identify a release-specific regression or workaround.
- The failure is in rendering, input, audio or startup rather than a required online service refusing the connection.
- Proton Experimental is specifically mentioned in current Ubuntu troubleshooting guidance or recent user reports.
When to stop cycling through versions
If every tested version fails at the same Windows-only component, more version changes are unlikely to help. A Proton release can fix an implementation bug, but it cannot provide a proprietary anti-cheat service, replace a required DRM driver, or guarantee that an external launcher will authenticate. Move to the platform alternatives after documenting the blocker.
Use ProtonDB as evidence, not as a guarantee
ProtonDB reports are useful because they contain game-specific launch options, workarounds and observations from other Linux players. Filter the reports mentally for the same game version, GPU family, distribution and launch symptom. A report from a different build or hardware stack can explain what is possible without predicting your result.

- Look for several reports that describe the same behavior rather than relying on one successful post.
- Separate single-player success from multiplayer success; online services can impose additional checks.
- Read the complete report for side effects such as broken video, missing controller input, or a workaround that disables a feature.
Community launch options are not an official compatibility promise. Apply one change at a time, keep a note of the original setting, and remove a workaround that causes new crashes or prevents updates.
Rule out system-level problems
Before concluding that a title is fundamentally incompatible, update the components that Proton depends on. Steam, the operating system, the graphics driver and relevant runtimes can each contain fixes for startup and rendering failures.
Update the core stack
- Install the current Steam client update offered for your installation.
- Bring your Linux distribution up to date using its normal, supported update process.
- Install the current graphics driver recommended for your GPU and distribution.
- Apply runtime updates supplied by Steam or your distribution, then restart Steam and retry the game.
Valve’s runtime issue notes specifically identify older proprietary NVIDIA drivers as a source of crashes. If you use NVIDIA hardware, verify the driver age and support status before treating a crash as a Proton limitation.

Account for the Steam package format
Valve states that the Flatpak Steam package is not officially supported by Valve. That does not prove that every Flatpak installation fails, but it changes where you should look for fixes and means that a problem reproduced only in that package may be packaging-related. Record whether Steam came from your distribution, a Flatpak, or another supported channel when comparing reports.

Separate a game problem from a system problem
Test a known-working Proton game after updating. If several unrelated games now crash, investigate the driver, Steam package, operating-system update or hardware before focusing on the one title. If other games work and only one title fails at the same stage, the game’s dependencies or build are more likely to be responsible.
Recognize hard compatibility blockers
Some Windows components are not ordinary files that Proton can translate transparently. They may install services, require privileged access, depend on a proprietary authentication path, or use protected media technology. Valve’s Verified criteria require the game and its middleware to be supported by Proton, which is why these components matter.
Anti-cheat
A game can run to its menu and still reject a multiplayer session because its anti-cheat service does not support the Linux/Proton environment. A version change may help only if the service has added compatible support and the game has enabled it. If current reports consistently show an anti-cheat rejection, Windows is the reliable option for that title’s online mode.
Digital rights management
DRM may depend on a Windows driver, protected process or activation path unavailable through Proton. Repeated activation failures, a launcher that closes after authentication, or a requirement for a component that installs outside the game prefix are signs of a fundamental dependency rather than a graphics setting.

Launchers and account services
Some games start through a separate Windows launcher. The game executable may be compatible while the launcher is not, or the launcher may update independently and introduce a new failure. If the launcher is mandatory and current reports do not show a working Linux path, use Windows or another supported platform.
Codecs and protected video
Intro movies, cutscenes or in-game video can fail when the required codec or protected playback path is unavailable. A black screen with sound, a crash when a video begins, or a menu that never appears can indicate this class of issue. A native Linux build or Windows installation may provide the missing playback component.
Compare the practical alternatives

Use Windows when the game requires unsupported middleware
For a title blocked by anti-cheat, DRM, a mandatory launcher or another Windows-only component, Windows is the most dependable fallback. You can install it on the same computer, boot a separate Windows installation, or use another Windows gaming PC. The choice depends on storage, reboot tolerance and whether you need the Linux environment available at the same time.
Plan a same-PC Windows installation
- Reserve enough storage for Windows, the game and future updates; the game’s own requirement does not include the operating system or other installed titles.
- Confirm that Windows has a suitable driver for your GPU, network adapter, audio device and controller.
- Use the same Steam account if you need access to an existing purchase, and check whether the game stores saves locally or through Steam Cloud.
- Keep Linux game files and Windows game files conceptually separate. A shared library can save space in some setups, but it does not make Windows-only components run under Linux.
- Expect to reboot when changing between operating systems unless you use a second machine.
Windows does not guarantee that every issue disappears: the title can still have its own server outage, account restriction or hardware requirement. It does remove Proton as the compatibility layer, which is the important distinction for middleware failures.

A second PC avoids repartitioning and repeated reboots. Check the game’s hardware requirements, install its required launcher and anti-cheat components normally, and verify the multiplayer mode you intend to use. This is practical when the Linux machine is your work system or when the blocked game is a small part of your library.

Cloud gaming is conditional, not a universal substitute
Cloud gaming can bypass local Proton compatibility because the game runs on the provider’s Windows infrastructure. Before paying or committing time, confirm all of the following for the exact title:
- The provider’s current catalog includes the game, not merely a similarly named edition.
- Your country or region is eligible and the service can use your account or store ownership.
- Required multiplayer, anti-cheat and launcher functions work in the streamed session.
- Your controller, keyboard, mouse and other input devices are supported.
- Your broadband connection is stable enough for the service’s streaming requirements.
Streaming introduces latency and image compression even when the game itself is fully supported. Service outages, queue limits, catalog changes and account policies are additional dependencies. Treat cloud gaming as a title-by-title fallback rather than a replacement for a local installation.
Check for a native Linux build
If the developer ships a maintained native Linux version, it removes the Proton compatibility layer for that build. Verify that the current Linux release includes the features you need, because native ports can lag behind Windows versions or differ in graphics, multiplayer, controller or video support.
A native build is most attractive when it is actively maintained and supports your distribution and GPU. It is not automatically superior: an old port can have fewer updates than the Windows build, while the Windows version may work reliably on a separate installation.
A decision tree for choosing your next step
- Does the game meet your hardware and operating-system requirements? If not, upgrade the hardware or choose a supported platform before troubleshooting Proton.
- Is the failure new after a game, Steam, driver or Proton update? Test the previous known-good per-game tool, the recommended version, and Proton Experimental where appropriate.
- Do current ProtonDB reports match your build, GPU and symptom? If yes, test one documented workaround at a time and keep a rollback note.
- Does the error identify anti-cheat, DRM, a mandatory launcher, codecs or another Windows-only component? Stop cycling versions and evaluate Windows first.
- Is a maintained native Linux build available? Verify its current feature support and use it if it meets your needs.
- Would streaming meet your latency and input requirements? Confirm exact title, region, account and multiplayer support before choosing cloud gaming.

Keep testing controlled and reversible
Write down the original Proton selection, game version, driver version and symptom before experimenting. Use per-game settings, change only one item, and test the same action after each change. This prevents a successful workaround from becoming impossible to reproduce and makes it easier to interpret a new failure after an update.
When you find a working combination, note whether it supports the whole game or only a mode such as single-player. Recheck after major game, Steam, distribution or driver updates because compatibility reports and workarounds can age quickly. If the blocker is a required Windows-only service rather than a Proton bug, preserve your notes and move directly to Windows, a verified native build or a confirmed cloud option.
