For UK collectors, HMV is the closest first stop when you want 4K Ultra HD SteelBooks, Blu-ray collector editions, box sets, or retailer exclusives. Rarewaves is the broader alternative if you also buy books, games, toys, apparel, gifts, and other entertainment products. Zavvi remains active in both the UK and US, so the practical approach is to compare the exact edition, stock status, delivered cost, seller, and shipping eligibility for every release.
Which Zavvi alternative should you try first?
The best replacement depends on the item rather than on a permanent retailer ranking. A limited SteelBook may be exclusive to one shop, while the standard 4K disc is available from several sellers. Use this quick guide before opening multiple tabs:
| Shop | Best fit | What its current pages establish | Important checks |
|---|---|---|---|
| HMV | UK buyers seeking 4K SteelBooks, collector editions, box sets, preorders, and exclusives | The catalogue has hundreds of SteelBook and collector-edition listings, including HMV exclusives, standard 4K releases, and collector sets. Its preorder pages include both exclusive and third-party releases. | Each listing can be in stock, on preorder, sold out, or coming soon. Delivery options vary by product and destination. |
| Rarewaves | Shoppers who want films alongside books, games, electronics, apparel, toys, and gifts | Rarewaves describes a wide entertainment and consumer-products assortment and says it also sells through several marketplaces. | Confirm the marketplace seller, exact edition, dispatch location, shipping charge, taxes, and returns terms. |
| Zavvi UK and Zavvi US | A useful baseline for checking the same release across markets | Both storefronts currently list physical films, SteelBooks, collectibles, and merchandise. Selection changes by market and over time. | Check currency, destination eligibility, release timing, and the edition description rather than assuming a UK and US listing are identical. |
There is no evidence here that Zavvi has closed; this is a comparison of places to shop, not a replacement for a discontinued store. Availability, prices, and delivery promises are live retail details and can change after publication.
Why HMV is the strongest direct alternative for UK SteelBooks
HMV most closely matches the part of Zavvi’s range that collectors usually mean when they ask for another place to buy SteelBooks. Its official SteelBooks and Collector’s Editions catalogue contains 4K Ultra HD SteelBooks, standard 4K releases, Blu-ray editions, box sets, limited packaging, and retailer exclusives. The page currently shows hundreds of listings, but that does not mean every title is available to order: stock labels differ from one product to the next.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
HMV describes the category as: “Explore exclusives, limited editions & Steelbooks, plus box sets & new releases.” That wording accurately signals the range, but it is not a guarantee that a particular film has an exclusive HMV edition or that a limited run will be restocked.
HMV’s exclusives and preorders
Use the Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD preorder page when a release has not shipped yet. Current examples shown there include an HMV-exclusive Spider-Man: Brand New Day 4K SteelBook and a Star Trek collection SteelBook library case. The displayed prices and release dates are live listing details; recheck them before paying because studios can move dates and limited editions can sell through.
A preorder is not the same as an in-stock purchase. Record the stated release date, dispatch wording, payment timing, and cancellation conditions. If you need a gift by a fixed date, an available standard edition may be safer than a limited preorder.

HMV delivery and country limits
HMV’s film preorder information states: “Free UK Delivery with premium packaging on orders over £25.” Treat this as a current offer attached to the relevant terms, not as a universal promise for every order or destination. Check the delivery method, item eligibility, and order total at checkout.
The catalogue’s country selector currently displays GBR, FRA, BEL, DEU, NLD, and IRL. That indicates selected European destinations are supported in the interface; it does not establish that every product ships to every selected country. Enter your address before relying on availability, shipping cost, or delivery time.

When Rarewaves is a better fit
Rarewaves is less narrowly focused on premium movie packaging. Its company page describes an assortment covering DVDs and Blu-rays, books, games, consumer electronics, apparel, toys, and gifts. That breadth makes it useful when your order combines a film with franchise merchandise, a game, or another physical gift.
Retail website and marketplace listings
Rarewaves says it sells through its own website and marketplaces including Amazon, eBay, OnBuy, Fnac, Rakuten, and Walmart. A marketplace result can be convenient, but it adds another verification step: the name shown in a search result is not enough to establish who will dispatch the item or which edition is being offered.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

- Match the barcode, format, language, packaging, and region information to the edition you want.
- Read the stated condition: new, used, sealed, or otherwise.
- Calculate the delivered total, including shipping, VAT, customs, or marketplace fees where applicable.
- Save the return deadline and the procedure for reporting a damaged or incorrect item.
How to interpret Rarewaves’ scale claims
Rarewaves’ pages contain company-reported figures, not independently audited comparisons. The About page says: Over 2 million products — Rarewaves, page accessed 2026 (no reporting year stated). It also says: Over 60 million customers delivered — Rarewaves, page accessed 2026 (no reporting year stated). The separate Rarewaves Group page states: Over 1 million products on its D2C website — Rarewaves Group, page accessed 2026 (no reporting year stated). It additionally says the business serves customers in 185 countries — Rarewaves Group, page accessed 2026 (no reporting year stated). These figures use different page descriptions and are not directly comparable product counts; they should not be read as a guarantee that a specific SteelBook is in stock or that delivery is available to your address.
How Zavvi still fits into the comparison
Zavvi’s UK and US storefronts continue to show films, SteelBooks, collectibles, and merchandise. The exact range, currency, delivery terms, and release timing can differ between the two sites. A title shown on one storefront may be unavailable, differently packaged, or priced differently on the other.
Keep Zavvi in your search when you are checking a specific exclusive or an older collectible, but do not infer that a listing is available merely because a product page exists. Distinguish clearly between “in stock,” “preorder,” “coming soon,” and “sold out.” A product page with a future date is not an immediately shippable item.

Compare the edition, not just the film title
Collectors often lose money by comparing two listings that contain the same movie but are not the same release. Before choosing a retailer, write down the exact specification you need:
| Decision point | Questions to answer | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Format | Is it 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, DVD, or a bundle containing more than one format? | A lower price may simply be for a different disc format. |
| Packaging | Is it a SteelBook, standard amaray case, slipcover, collector box, or library-style case? | Packaging is often the main reason for a collector purchase. |
| Edition status | Is it a retailer exclusive, limited edition, numbered release, or standard retail issue? | Exclusive artwork and bonus items can make two listings non-equivalent. |
| Contents | Which discs, cuts, bonus features, art cards, booklets, or other inserts are listed? | Do not assume a familiar title includes the same extras in every edition. |
| Region and compatibility | Does the listing identify a region or playback requirement relevant to your player? | Import releases may not be interchangeable with domestic editions. |
| Condition | Is the item new and sealed, or is it used or marketplace-supplied? | Condition affects both collectability and return options. |
Use the full product title, catalogue number, or barcode when searching across shops. A search for only the movie name can return several visually similar editions.
Calculate the real delivered cost
The sticker price is only one part of a cross-border purchase. Compare each candidate using the same calculation:
- Start with the item price in the checkout currency. Do not compare a UK price and a US price without accounting for exchange rates.
- Add delivery. A free-delivery threshold may apply only to qualifying UK orders, a particular category, or a particular packaging service.
- Check tax and import treatment. Your destination and the dispatch country can affect VAT, customs, or handling charges.
- Confirm the seller. Marketplace listings can have different shipping and return terms even when the product title is identical.
- Include the cost of risk. If an item is rare, damaged packaging or an uncertain return route may matter more than a small headline discount.
Record the total at checkout, not the amount shown in a search result. Prices and shipping estimates can change when you select a country, quantity, or delivery method.
Stock status and release timing need separate checks
Limited physical releases create two different questions: can you place an order, and when will it ship? Treat the following labels differently:

- In stock: the retailer indicates it can currently fulfil the order, subject to its stated dispatch window.
- Preorder: the item has not reached its scheduled release or dispatch date; the date can move.
- Coming soon: the page signals a future release but may not yet accept an order.
- Sold out: the listing exists, but the retailer is not currently offering stock. A page alone is not evidence of a restock.
For a preorder, save the listing date and edition description. For a sold-out item, compare another retailer rather than paying an inflated price before checking whether a standard or non-exclusive edition meets your needs.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choosing a retailer by collecting goal
You want the largest choice of UK SteelBooks
Start with HMV’s SteelBooks category and filter by the title or franchise. Then compare the same catalogue number elsewhere. HMV is the most direct match for UK-focused 4K SteelBook and collector-edition shopping in the sources available here, but individual stock still varies.
You want a film plus broader pop-culture goods
Check Rarewaves when your basket includes DVDs or Blu-rays together with books, games, apparel, toys, electronics, or gifts. Its stated range is broader than a specialist film category. Verify each item separately because a single basket can contain different dispatch and return conditions.
You need a particular exclusive
Search by the complete edition name and compare the retailer’s artwork, contents, release status, and seller. An exclusive is defined by the actual listing, not by the fact that the same film is sold elsewhere.
You are buying internationally
Begin with the retailer that visibly accepts your destination, then test the exact product in checkout. HMV’s selector shows a number of European destinations, while Rarewaves describes international reach; neither statement guarantees that every title, format, or marketplace listing can be delivered to every country.

- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
A repeatable search workflow
This process reduces wrong-edition purchases and surprises at checkout:
- Define the target. Write the title, film version, format, packaging, language, region requirement, and acceptable condition.
- Check HMV’s category and preorder pages. Note whether the matching listing is exclusive, standard, in stock, or a preorder.
- Check Rarewaves. If the result comes from a marketplace, identify the seller and dispatch terms before comparing price.
- Check Zavvi’s relevant storefront. Use the UK or US site that matches your delivery country and currency.
- Compare equivalent editions. Remove any listing that differs in format, packaging, contents, or condition.
- Calculate delivered totals. Apply shipping, tax, and any import or handling charge shown for your address.
- Choose based on timing and recourse. For a deadline, prefer confirmed stock and a clear return route over an uncertain preorder or unusually cheap marketplace listing.
- Save evidence. Keep the order confirmation and the product description showing the edition you purchased.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming a SteelBook is automatically 4K
SteelBook describes the metal packaging, not the disc format. Confirm whether the listing contains 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, or both.
Confusing a retailer exclusive with an exclusive movie
The film may be widely available while the artwork, case, bonus item, or bundle is exclusive. Compare the contents and packaging fields, not only the title.

Release dates are live details supplied by the retailer or studio and can change. A preorder is appropriate only if your timing allows for movement.
Ignoring the marketplace seller
Rarewaves says it uses several marketplaces. The platform name does not replace checking the individual seller, condition, dispatch origin, and return policy.
Using a country-level shipping claim as proof for one product
A country selector or a statement about worldwide delivery indicates broad reach, not universal item eligibility. Test the exact product and address in checkout.
Bottom line for UK and international collectors
Choose HMV first for a UK-oriented search for 4K SteelBooks, collector editions, box sets, and retailer exclusives. Choose Rarewaves when the order extends beyond films or when its marketplace presence offers a useful alternative, while taking extra care with seller and edition verification. Keep Zavvi’s UK or US storefront in the comparison for title-specific exclusives and availability checks. The winning listing is the one that matches your exact format and packaging, is genuinely available when you need it, ships to your country, and remains the best value after delivery and taxes—not simply the one with the lowest displayed price.
