There is no verified, universal replacement for YouTube search. The most reliable approach is to search several destinations according to the video you need: use Dailymotion for broad browsing, Vimeo for creator-led and professionally produced work with detailed filters, and PeerTube when you want federated, independently hosted video. For older or preserved material, also investigate the Internet Archive’s moving-image collection. If one service does not return the video, that usually means its own catalog or search scope is limited—not that the video is unavailable online.
This guide explains what each service can actually search, how to avoid misleadingly narrow results, and a repeatable workflow for finding a specific title, creator, event, tutorial, or historical recording.
Why one YouTube-search substitute does not cover every need
Video search is shaped by catalog, indexing policy, account settings, geography and, in the case of federated services, the server you happen to use. A service may have the right video but fail to show it because the uploader uses a different platform, the item is outside the current search index, or a feature is unavailable in your region.

PeerTube’s search can be limited to one instance and the instances it follows unless an administrator enables a wider index. Dailymotion exposes a general search and browsing experience, but its changing homepage feed does not prove parity with any other service’s catalog. The Internet Archive is worth checking for older or preserved material, although its current search controls and collection boundaries should be verified item by item.

These differences are why a practical search plan uses more than one destination instead of trying to identify a single “winner.”
Vimeo: the strongest choice when filters and creator context matter
Vimeo is the most useful first stop when you expect a creator, studio, organization or professional publisher to have uploaded the video there. Its viewer tools include a Watch page, themed Channels, groups, creator follows and a feed, so discovery does not depend entirely on a single keyword box. Vimeo’s help documentation describes a mode for searching all public Vimeo videos where that feature is available, separate from searching your own Library.
Search all public videos instead of only your Library
If you are looking beyond videos associated with your account, choose the search-all option rather than Library search. Library results are inherently narrower. The search-all option is not available in every region, and an Enterprise workspace may deliberately limit results to the current workspace. Confirm which scope the interface is using before deciding that a title is missing.

Results can be sorted by relevance, upload recency, popularity, title order or duration. A useful sequence is to search with the exact title or creator name, then add an upload-date range or category. Add resolution, HDR, 360, live-event or license constraints only when those attributes are part of what you need; otherwise they can remove a valid result.
When Vimeo is the right fit
- You know or suspect the creator uses Vimeo.
- You need a professional, curated or portfolio-style presentation.
- You need to narrow a large result set by date, duration, format or licensing information.
- You want to browse Channels, groups, follows or a personalized feed after the initial search.
Do not treat an empty Vimeo result as proof that the video is not online. Regional availability and the distinction between Library, workspace and public search can all change what you see.
PeerTube: powerful federation, but search scope is part of the answer
PeerTube is a decentralized, federated alternative made up of separate hosting instances. Those instances can interoperate, but they do not automatically expose one perfectly universal index. The instance you visit and its administrator’s configuration directly affect your results.

Platform search
Platform search returns videos and channels known to the current instance. “Known” can include content hosted locally and material from other instances that the current one follows. If the instance follows only a small network, a perfectly relevant video on an unrelated instance may not appear.

Global search
PeerTube documentation distinguishes global search from platform search. Global search relies on an external index to reach beyond the current instance’s known or followed material, and an administrator must enable it. Look for an indication in the instance’s search interface that global search is available. If it is absent, assume that the search is local or limited to the instance’s known network.
URI or handle search
When you already know a remote video or channel address, URI or handle search can locate that specified item when the instance has the feature enabled. This is more dependable than broad keyword discovery when a creator has given you a direct PeerTube identity but you do not know which instance hosts it.
When PeerTube is the right fit
- You want video from independently operated, interoperable hosts.
- You are searching for a creator or community that publishes on a particular PeerTube instance.
- You can check the instance’s search configuration or use a known remote URI or handle.
- You value federation and are willing to account for different instance boundaries.
For a broad topic, try more than one instance if the first search is sparse. That is a consequence of separate search scopes, not evidence that PeerTube lacks the subject.

Dailymotion: a practical second destination for general discovery
Dailymotion’s official site presents three useful entry points: Search, Explore and Following. The Explore area visibly surfaces videos from publishers and other channels, giving you a browsing route when you do not yet know the exact title.

How to use it
- Start with the exact title, a distinctive phrase, or the publisher or channel name in Search.
- If the query is broad, open Explore and inspect the publisher and channel recommendations.
- Use Following after identifying a channel you want to monitor.
- Try a second wording, language or creator name if the first query is empty.
Dailymotion is best treated as another catalog to check, not as a measured replacement for YouTube. The visible Explore feed is dynamic, so it can demonstrate available discovery paths without establishing total catalog size, completeness or ranking quality.
Internet Archive: investigate it for older or preserved video
The Internet Archive’s moving-image collection is a sensible place to investigate historical recordings, older broadcasts, public-domain-looking material and items that may no longer be promoted by contemporary video sites. The available evidence does not establish a fixed set of current search filters, a complete inventory or an archival guarantee for every item.
Verify each item independently
- Read the item description and identify the uploader or collection context.
- Check the stated rights and access terms before downloading, reusing or redistributing anything.
- Compare dates, names and event details with another reliable record when provenance matters.
- Do not assume that an item’s presence proves that it is complete, authentic or unrestricted.
Use the Internet Archive as a targeted archival lead. For a recent creator upload or a current channel, Vimeo, PeerTube or Dailymotion is usually the more direct next step.

- Define the target. Write down the exact title, creator or publisher, approximate date, language, event, distinctive phrase and expected format. These details become alternate search terms.
- Start where the uploader is most likely to be. Use Vimeo for creator-led or professional work, the relevant PeerTube instance for federated publishers, Dailymotion for broad publisher and channel browsing, or the Internet Archive for historical material.
- Check search scope before reading results. On Vimeo, distinguish Library search from search-all and note whether region restrictions apply. On PeerTube, determine whether the instance offers platform search only or has global search enabled.
- Search narrowly first. Use the exact title in quotation marks when the interface supports it, then try the creator name plus one distinctive subject term. Avoid adding every possible filter at once.
- Apply one useful filter at a time. On Vimeo, try date, category, duration or format filters in that order. If results disappear, remove the last filter before changing the entire query.
- Inspect creator and channel context. Open the result’s creator, Channel, group, Following page or instance profile. Related uploads can reveal a renamed, re-edited or serialized version of the video.
- Repeat on a second destination. Use the same creator name, exact title and one distinctive phrase. Separate platform indexes mean that a failed first search is not a cross-platform negative.
- For archival candidates, verify provenance and rights. Check the Internet Archive item description and rights statement, and corroborate important dates or identities independently.
- Record the successful location. Save the canonical page, creator or instance name and the date you found it. This is especially useful for dynamic feeds and federated hosts.
What to do when results are sparse or irrelevant
Only your own videos appear on Vimeo
You are probably searching the Library rather than all public Vimeo videos. Switch to the public search-all mode if it is available in your region. If you are using an Enterprise workspace, results may intentionally remain inside that workspace.
PeerTube returns very few results
Check the instance’s search scope. Platform search covers material known to that instance and its followed network. If global search is not enabled, switch to another instance, ask for the creator’s direct URI or handle, or search the creator’s name on a different destination.
Dailymotion shows recommendations but not the expected title
Use Search rather than relying only on Explore, then try the publisher or channel name and a distinctive phrase. Explore is a changing feed, not a complete index presented in a stable order.
A historical item appears without clear context
Treat it as a lead. Read the description, uploader information and rights terms, then compare the date, people and event with an independent record before relying on it.
A filter removes every plausible result
Remove the most restrictive filter and rerun the same query. Resolution, HDR, license, 360, live-event, price, duration and date constraints describe specific attributes; a video can be relevant while lacking one of those labels or using a different classification.
Search tactics that transfer between platforms
- Use identity before topic. A creator, publisher, series or event name usually narrows more effectively than a generic subject word.
- Keep distinctive wording. A quoted phrase from a title, speaker or episode can survive minor title changes better than a broad keyword.
- Try spelling and language variants. Names, transliterations, abbreviations and translated titles may be indexed differently.
- Search the event, not only the clip. For a conference or broadcast, combine the event name with the speaker, year or session.
- Separate discovery from verification. Finding a matching thumbnail is not enough; confirm creator, date, duration and context on the item page.
- Use direct addresses when available. A PeerTube URI or handle can locate a remote item even when broad global discovery is unavailable.
Limits you should keep in mind
None of these services is established here as a universal cross-platform search engine. The documented material does not provide a credible winner for total catalog size, result relevance or coverage across all video sites. Vimeo’s search and discovery features vary by region, PeerTube’s behavior varies by instance configuration, and Dailymotion’s Explore feed changes over time. The Internet Archive should be approached as a collection to investigate rather than a guarantee of completeness.
Those limits change the meaning of a failed search. An empty result answers only whether that service, in that scope and at that moment, surfaced a match. It does not answer whether the video exists elsewhere. For specific creators, regional material, federated hosts and historical recordings, searching a second destination is not redundant; it is the correct response to separate indexes and catalog policies.
