For a console subscription, PlayStation Plus Extra is the closest Xbox Game Pass alternative for indie players. It works on PS5 and PS4, includes a rotating Game Catalog with hundreds of games, and costs $16.99 per month or $134.99 per year in the United States on Sony’s current 2026 pricing page. Premium costs $19.99 per month or $159.99 per year and adds Classics, game trials, and cloud streaming.

PC players have a different set of strong options. itch.io is the best place to discover free, experimental, browser-based, jam-made, and creator-distributed games. GOG is the better fit when you want a curated store and to keep the games you buy. Steam offers the broadest PC selection, with indie tags, demos, free-to-play listings, reviews, wishlists, controller support, and frequent discounts. The right choice depends on your hardware, whether you want a subscription or ownership, and whether the specific game is available in your region.

Quick answer: which alternative should an indie player choose?

Platform Best for Access model Key indie strengths
PlayStation Plus Extra Console players who want one subscription Monthly or annual catalog membership PS5 and PS4 access, hundreds of catalog games, rotating selection
PlayStation Plus Premium Players who also want classics, trials, and streaming Monthly or annual catalog membership Everything in Extra plus Classics, game trials, and cloud streaming
itch.io Free, experimental, browser, and creator-led discovery Free and paid individual releases Jams, demos, browser games, genre tags, and a very wide range of small projects
GOG Buyers who want a curated store and continued access to purchases Individual purchases Curated catalog and an ownership-focused approach
Steam PC players who want the largest practical selection Individual purchases, including free-to-play releases Indie tags, demos, reviews, wishlists, controller support, community tools, and sales

There is no single replacement that reproduces every part of Game Pass. PlayStation Plus is the closest subscription equivalent on a console; the three PC stores are better understood as discovery and ownership platforms rather than one all-you-can-play catalog.

PlayStation Plus Extra: the closest console substitute

PlayStation Plus Extra is the strongest match for someone leaving a console subscription and wanting a ready-made library. Sony describes its Game Catalog as containing “hundreds of games from genre-defining blockbusters to innovative indies.” The service supports PS5 and PS4, so it fits households that have either current-generation hardware or the previous console.

Premium $19.99 $159.99 Classics, game trials, and cloud streaming in addition to the Extra offering

What the catalog means for indie games

Sony’s catalog page listed 640 games. That number is a snapshot, not a permanent entitlement: titles can have a removal date, and the available games depend on the tier and region. A game being in the catalog today does not guarantee that it will remain available for the duration of your subscription.

This makes Extra useful for sampling several indies without buying each one. It is especially convenient if you prefer downloading games to a console and want a single billing relationship. It is less suitable if your priority is permanent access to a particular title, because catalog access ends when a game leaves the service or when the subscription is no longer active.

When Premium is worth the extra cost

Premium adds Classics, game trials, and cloud streaming to the Extra-level catalog. Those features matter if you want to try a game before committing, revisit older releases, or stream supported games instead of relying entirely on a download. Not every indie in the catalog is confirmed to support streaming or trials, so check the individual game’s listing rather than assuming those options apply universally.

PlayStation Plus limitations to check first

  • Region: Catalog membership and individual titles can vary by country.
  • Removal dates: A listed game may be scheduled to leave, so check its catalog entry before starting a long campaign.
  • Tier: Some games or features may require Premium rather than Extra; the tier label on the game page is the authoritative check.
  • Hardware: The service is relevant to PS5 and PS4 owners, not as a general PC storefront.
  • Ownership: A catalog license is different from buying a game outright; access is tied to the active subscription and the game’s continued inclusion.

itch.io: the best discovery layer for experimental indies

itch.io is built around finding and sharing independent games online. Its homepage describes the service as “a simple way to find and share indie games online for free.” In practice, the storefront mixes free and paid releases with browser games, demos, game-jam projects, bundles, and genre tags.

Why itch.io is unusually good for discovery

Small teams and individual creators can publish work without waiting for a large storefront category or a conventional release schedule. That makes itch.io valuable for prototypes, short games, interactive fiction, unusual mechanics, and experiments that may never appear in a subscription catalog. Genre tags and browsing pages let you move from a broad theme to a highly specific niche.

The “free” description refers to the service’s discovery model, not to every game on it. Some projects cost nothing, while others are paid, pay-what-you-want, or offered in bundles. Read the individual game page for its price, operating system, download format, and whether it runs in a browser.

Best uses for itch.io

  • Free sampling: Try a large number of small projects without committing to a subscription.
  • Browser play: Start games that run directly on a supported browser, when the creator offers that format.
  • Game jams: Find time-limited creative challenges and the games made for them.
  • Experimental design: Explore mechanics and subjects that are less common in mainstream catalogs.
  • Creator support: Buy or contribute to a release when you want to support an individual developer.

Trade-offs

itch.io is a discovery-first platform, so the experience is less standardized than a console subscription. Installers, controller support, save behavior, and system requirements are set by each creator. Before downloading, check the game page for its operating system, architecture, required software, and any notes from the developer. If you want a uniform console interface, automatic updates, or a single curated catalog, PlayStation Plus may feel simpler.

GOG: buy indie games with an ownership-first mindset

GOG describes itself as “a digital distribution platform – an online store with a curated selection of games, an optional gaming client giving you freedom of choice, and a vivid community of gamers.” It also states the belief that “you should own the things you buy.” That positioning makes GOG a strong alternative when your main concern is keeping purchased indie games instead of renting access through a catalog.

How GOG differs from a subscription

You purchase titles individually rather than paying for access to a rotating library. The practical advantage is predictability: a game you buy is not dependent on a catalog removal date. The trade-off is that the cost of building a large library arrives one title at a time, although the storefront also runs discounts.

GOG’s selection is curated and includes an Indie category. A curated catalog can make browsing less overwhelming, but it is smaller and more selective than a broad subscription service or the largest PC storefront. If a particular new indie is not listed, you may need to check another store.

Questions to ask before buying

  • Is the game available for your operating system and hardware?
  • Does the product page provide an offline installer or another access method that suits you?
  • Are the language, controller, and accessibility details you need listed?
  • Does the regional store page show the same edition and price as the one you found elsewhere?

GOG’s ownership-oriented language is a useful buying principle, but it does not remove the need to read the specific product page. Editions, updates, optional clients, and system requirements can differ by title.

Steam: the broadest PC buy-and-try option

Steam is the practical default for PC players who want the largest pool of indie releases and the most discovery tooling in one place. Its current storefront exposes indie-tagged games, demos, free-to-play releases, category browsing, community recommendations, and frequent discounts. You buy games individually rather than receiving one subscription entitlement.

Discovery tools that matter for indie players

  • Indie tags: Narrow a large catalog by broad category or a specific style of game.
  • Demos: Try selected games before purchasing when the developer provides a demo.
  • Free-to-play listings: Start with no purchase and decide later whether a title suits you.
  • Wishlists: Save games you are watching and use the list to track future buying decisions.
  • Reviews and community discussion: Read player feedback alongside the developer’s description.
  • Controller support: Check the store page and community information for the input method you plan to use.
  • Sales: Compare the current price with your budget instead of assuming a subscription is cheaper for every game.

Steam versus GOG for a purchase

Choose Steam when breadth, community information, demos, and frequent browsing are more important than a tightly curated catalog. Choose GOG when the store’s curation and ownership-focused approach better match how you want to keep and manage games. Neither choice guarantees that every indie is available there; search for the exact title and edition before deciding.

Steam’s trade-offs

Individual purchases can add up if you sample many games. The size of the catalog can also make discovery noisy: tags and user reviews are useful filters, but they are not a substitute for checking the developer’s system requirements and update notes. A game may be listed for PC while still requiring a particular operating system, controller configuration, or launcher behavior.

Subscription versus ownership: the decision that matters most

Start by deciding whether you want breadth now or continued access later.

Choose a subscription when

  • You want to sample many games during a fixed period.
  • You already own a supported PS5 or PS4.
  • You prefer one recurring payment to several individual purchases.
  • You are comfortable tracking catalog changes and removal dates.
  • You value Premium’s trials or cloud streaming enough to pay for the higher tier.

Choose individual purchases when

  • You have one or two specific games in mind.
  • You want to return to a game years later without maintaining a subscription.
  • You prefer a curated or creator-led store over a rotating catalog.
  • You want to build a permanent PC library and wait for discounts.

Ownership does not mean every future service or update is guaranteed forever, and a subscription does not mean a game is unavailable after removal if you buy it separately. The important distinction is what entitlement you receive for your payment and how long that entitlement is expected to last.

How to choose in five steps

  1. Identify your hardware. PS5 and PS4 owners can evaluate PlayStation Plus Extra or Premium. PC players should compare itch.io, GOG, and Steam.
  2. Write down the games you actually want. Search the exact title on the platform you are considering instead of judging only by a platform’s general reputation.
  3. Decide whether you are sampling or keeping. A catalog is efficient for short-term exploration; an individual purchase is clearer for a long-term favorite.
  4. Check the product page. Confirm region, edition, operating system, controller information, price, and whether the game is a demo, browser release, full purchase, or catalog entitlement.
  5. Match the service to your tolerance for change. If a removal date would disrupt your plans, avoid relying on a subscription for that game. If you enjoy constant discovery, rotation can be an advantage.

Ways to combine the services without overspending

Console sampler plus permanent PC purchases

A player with a PlayStation can use Extra for broad sampling, then buy a favorite PC version on GOG or Steam if they want a separate, individually purchased copy. Verify that the same title and edition exist on the second platform; purchases and saves do not automatically transfer between storefronts.

Free discovery first, paid purchase second

Use itch.io to find unusual concepts, demos, and short projects, then move to Steam or GOG only when you want a larger release, a different edition, or a store environment that better fits your library. This approach keeps experimentation inexpensive while reserving purchases for games you already understand.

Wishlist-driven buying

On Steam, place interesting games on a wishlist and revisit them during discounts. On GOG, browse the Indie category and compare the product page’s access details before buying. The goal is not to collect every promising title; it is to separate “interesting to try” from “worth keeping.”

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Assuming a catalog count is a permanent promise

The 640-game figure shown by Sony is a point-in-time count. Catalog size, individual titles, tiers, and removal dates can change. Treat the current game page, not an old list or headline number, as the final availability check.

Confusing free discovery with free ownership

itch.io contains free games but also paid releases. Steam’s storefront includes free-to-play titles but is primarily a place where games are purchased individually. Read the price and license information on each listing.

Choosing a store before checking the exact title

Indie distribution is fragmented. A title may appear on one storefront and not another, or its console and PC editions may differ. Search first, then compare the access model and requirements.

Ignoring regional differences

Prices, catalog membership, release timing, and availability can vary by country. The United States PlayStation prices quoted here should not be treated as global prices. Your account’s local storefront is the authoritative source.

Forgetting the difference between a demo and a full game

A demo can answer questions about controls and performance, but it is not evidence that the full release has identical content or requirements. Confirm what is included before making a purchase decision.

Bottom line for different types of indie players

  • Best console subscription alternative: PlayStation Plus Extra, because it combines PS5/PS4 support with a large, rotating catalog that includes indie games.
  • Best higher-tier console option: PlayStation Plus Premium, when Classics, trials, or cloud streaming justify the additional monthly or annual cost.
  • Best place for free and experimental discovery: itch.io, particularly for browser games, jams, prototypes, and creator-distributed projects.
  • Best ownership-focused PC store: GOG, for readers who prefer a curated selection and individually purchased games they can keep.
  • Best broad PC storefront: Steam, for the largest practical range of indie releases plus demos, reviews, wishlists, controller information, and sales.

The most reliable strategy is to combine the access model with the game you intend to play: use a subscription for variety, itch.io for experimentation, and a purchase on GOG or Steam when a specific indie becomes a long-term favorite.
