Short answer: keep the Windows 11 Widgets Board if you mainly want a quick, built-in news and information flyout. Choose Themia if you want weather and calendar panels permanently visible on the desktop. Rainmeter and Seelen UI are better understood as customization platforms rather than confirmed, ready-made replacements for all three functions. The sources reviewed do not verify one third-party desktop product that currently combines weather, calendar, and news in a single package.
The distinction matters: Microsoft’s Widgets Board overlays your desktop when opened, while desktop widget software places panels on the desktop itself. Decide where you want information to appear before comparing features.
What counts as a Windows 11 widget alternative?
Windows 11 uses “widgets” for a board that opens over your current work. It is not a set of permanently pinned panels. You can open it from the Widgets area on the taskbar, press Windows+W, or swipe from the edge of a touch screen. Microsoft describes widgets as quick access to information and actions and explicitly says they are not intended to replace full apps or websites.
A desktop widget application uses a different model. Its panels can sit on the desktop, remain visible between applications, and often be moved, resized, themed, or arranged into a dashboard. That can be more useful for a clock, forecast, or agenda you need to see without opening a flyout, but it also introduces another download, another update cycle, and potentially more configuration.

The three functions are not equally available
Microsoft’s own board has an explicitly documented news surface: the Discover dashboard. Microsoft Support calls Discover the stream of news content displayed in the Widgets board. It documents following or blocking topics and publishers, hiding individual stories, changing how much Discover content appears, configuring dashboard notifications, and turning Discover off.
Weather and calendar widgets can also be available through Microsoft’s supported-widget picker, but the exact set depends on the installed apps, region, and Windows component version. Third-party pages reviewed for this guide verify weather and calendar in Themia, general desktop customization in Rainmeter, and weather panels within the broader Seelen UI environment. They do not establish a currently maintained, all-in-one desktop package that also supplies news.

If your main complaint is unwanted headlines, accidental taskbar activation, or a cluttered feed, changing Microsoft’s settings is lower-risk than installing a replacement. Your existing board can remain useful for weather, calendar, traffic, or other supported cards while Discover is reduced or removed.
Open the board without changing anything
- Select the Widgets area on the taskbar.
- Alternatively, press Windows+W.
- On a touch device, swipe inward from the screen edge.
Hiding the Widgets item on the taskbar does not remove the board completely. Microsoft says it remains available with Windows+W or an edge swipe.

Control the news stream
Use the Discover controls documented by Microsoft Support to follow or block topics and publishers. When a story is irrelevant, use its menu to hide that story. The same settings area lets you adjust the amount of Discover content and turn the dashboard off altogether. Notification controls are separate, so configure them if headlines or alerts are the problem rather than the feed itself.
Manage the taskbar entry
Windows lets you hide the Widgets taskbar item. This removes the visible taskbar button while preserving the keyboard and edge-swipe entry points. That is useful on a work PC where you want the board available on demand but do not want a persistent taskbar element.

Add and arrange supported widgets
Use the board’s supported-widget picker to add cards. Where a widget exposes those controls, resize it or open its customization settings. Availability and labels can differ by app, region, and Windows component version, so a missing calendar or weather card may reflect the installed provider rather than a fault in the board.

Cost and availability
The vendor describes both a free tier and a one-time purchase. The page does not provide a durable price that should be treated as universal; confirm the current amount, feature limits, update policy, and Windows support at themia.app before installing. Choose Themia when the priority is a glanceable desktop forecast and agenda, with less interest in building a highly customized shell. It is a poor assumption for an all-in-one news workflow because that capability was not established by the product information reviewed.
Rainmeter: powerful, but a build-your-own system
Rainmeter is presented by its official site as a desktop customization tool. It is best viewed as a framework in which you select and configure skins, rather than as one packaged weather-calendar-news dashboard with a guaranteed feature set.
What the official evidence supports
The official page establishes the customization category, not a current bundle of maintained skins for the three requested functions. Weather, calendar, and news capabilities therefore depend on the individual skins you select. Their update dates, data sources, permissions, and compatibility can differ.
What setup involves
- Install Rainmeter only from the project’s official distribution page.
- Identify a skin for each function you need instead of assuming one suite supplies all of them.

Who should choose it
Rainmeter suits users who enjoy assembling a personal desktop and are willing to maintain it. It is not the quickest answer for someone who wants one installer, one settings panel, and confirmed weather, calendar, and news coverage.
Seelen UI: for a wider desktop transformation
Seelen UI’s project page describes a broader Windows desktop environment with shell customization, desktop widgets, and weather panels. That puts it in a different category from a small forecast card.
What it can make sense for
- Users who want to reshape more than a single widget.
- People interested in desktop shell, panel, and layout customization alongside widgets.
- Readers who value a unified visual environment and accept a larger configuration surface.
What to verify first
Check the project’s current release, supported Windows build, installation instructions, and update activity before committing your desktop to it. The reviewed project information does not establish a ready-made combination of current weather, calendar, and news modules. It also should not be described as a minimal substitute for the Widgets Board: its scope is broader and its changes can affect more of the Windows experience.

Among the primary sources reviewed, Microsoft’s Discover dashboard is the only news surface with explicit documentation for topic and publisher controls, story hiding, content-volume adjustment, notifications, and disabling the dashboard. - Keep Discover for news and use a desktop tool for weather and calendar. This separates the functions according to the products that document them most clearly.
- Use a separate news app or feed. Select one independently, checking its current publisher, privacy terms, maintenance, and Windows compatibility before naming or installing it.
Do not assume that a skin labeled “news” still works: feeds, APIs, authentication, and publishers can change even when the desktop layout remains attractive.

Choose the built-in board when…
- You want the least installation and maintenance work.
- A flyout is acceptable instead of permanently visible panels.

Independent desktop software deserves the same care as any other system utility. Before installing, check:
- The publisher and download location match the official project page.
- The app supports your exact Windows 11 build and architecture.
- Pricing, free-tier limits, update terms, and cancellation or refund rules are current.
- Privacy documentation explains what location, calendar, feed, or account data is collected.
- Weather and news providers still respond and do not require obsolete credentials.
- Skins or extensions come from maintained, documented sources.
- You can disable startup behavior and remove the software without losing normal Windows access.
Keep a restore point or a record of your original taskbar and shell settings before making broad desktop changes. If a widget disappears after a Windows update, first check whether the provider or extension still supports that build; do not assume reinstalling the entire desktop environment is necessary.
Common problems and practical fixes
The Widgets button is gone
Hiding the taskbar item does not necessarily disable the board. Try Windows+W or an edge swipe. If neither works, review Windows’ taskbar and widget settings and confirm that your organization has not applied a policy restriction.

The board has too much news
Use Discover’s topic, publisher, story-hiding, content-volume, and notification controls. If you do not want the stream at all, turn Discover off rather than replacing the entire board.
A calendar or weather card is missing
Open the supported-widget picker and check whether the required app or provider is installed. Availability can vary by region, app, and Windows component version. A missing card does not prove that the board itself is malfunctioning.
A third-party desktop widget stops updating
Check the provider, skin, or project’s current maintenance status and data-source requirements. Re-authenticate only through documented settings, and remove extensions that request unrelated privileges or have no recent maintenance information.
The desktop becomes cluttered or hard to use
Reduce the number of panels, disable startup for nonessential widgets, and restore a simpler layout. Broader environments such as Seelen UI can change more than the appearance of one panel, so undo shell-level changes before troubleshooting individual weather or calendar modules.
