If your Windows 10 PC cannot officially upgrade to Windows 11, first confirm that it is genuinely ineligible rather than blocked by a fixable configuration or firmware setting. If it is outside Microsoft’s supported hardware path, choose based on your applications: ChromeOS Flex suits browser-first work on a certified model; Linux Mint or Ubuntu suit a conventional local desktop after compatibility testing; and Windows-specific software may justify a supported Windows 11 replacement or a temporary Windows 10 Extended Security Updates (ESU) enrollment.
Back up your files and test your essential applications, printers, Wi-Fi, graphics, audio, webcam, Bluetooth and accessibility devices before erasing Windows. The safest migration is the one that proves your daily workflow works on the new system before you make the change permanent.
What “unsupported Windows 10 PC” means in 2026
Windows 10 version 22H2 was the final feature update. Microsoft’s standard servicing ended on October 14, 2025. A Windows 10 installation can continue to boot after that date, but Microsoft says an operating system at end of support no longer receives normal quality updates, new or updated features, security updates or technical support.

Microsoft Lifecycle FAQ
That does not make the computer unusable immediately. It does mean that newly discovered vulnerabilities, compatibility changes and driver problems are no longer covered by ordinary Windows 10 servicing. Treat continued use as a short-term decision, not as an equivalent to supported Windows.
Check whether the PC is actually ineligible
Before replacing an operating system, compare the computer with Microsoft’s current Windows 11 minimum requirements and exact processor and device status. Some machines described as “unsupported” fail because a required setting is disabled or because the compatibility check is outdated. Others use hardware that Microsoft does not support, in which case repeated upgrade attempts will not create a supported installation.
Use the exact device, not just the model family
- Record the complete model name and number, processor model, memory, storage and firmware information.
- Check Microsoft’s current eligibility guidance for that exact configuration.
- Do not assume that one laptop variant is representative of every variant sold under the same family name.
- Confirm that recovery media and drivers are available before changing the operating system.
If the machine is eligible after correcting a setting, Windows 11 remains the least disruptive choice because your existing Windows applications and peripherals keep their familiar environment. If the hardware is outside the supported path, compare the alternatives below instead of relying on unsupported installation workarounds.

The decisive question is not which operating system looks best in screenshots. It is whether your essential applications, files and devices work on that operating system and whether the device will remain supported.
| Option | Application fit | Hardware requirement | Best workflow | Support considerations | Cost and effort |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ChromeOS Flex | Web applications and browser services; Windows desktop programs are not a native fit. | Check the exact model and number in Google’s certified-device list. | Browser-centered work, cloud storage, web email and collaboration. | Certified models have a stated certified-until date. After certification expires, Google says continuing testing and updates are not guaranteed. | Requires backup, installation media and a learning adjustment; no current product price is established here. |
| Linux Mint | Linux-compatible applications or web replacements; test any Windows-only program first. | Verify Wi-Fi, graphics, audio, printer, webcam, Bluetooth and accessibility support. | A conventional locally installed desktop with broad customization. | Use the current release documentation for support dates and requirements; those details change over time. | Installation is generally a larger workflow change than staying with Windows; hardware replacement may still be needed. |
| Ubuntu | Linux-compatible applications or web replacements; verify proprietary or Windows-specific software. | Check current requirements and device support for the chosen release. | A mainstream Linux desktop with local applications and online services. | Release numbers, support periods and requirements must be checked in the current Ubuntu documentation. | Plan for testing, possible driver work and learning a different desktop. |
| Supported Windows 11 PC | Best fit for Windows-only applications, games, drivers and specialist peripherals. | Use a device that meets Microsoft’s current supported requirements. | Keep the existing Windows workflow with the fewest application changes. | Receives the normal support and security path for its supported edition and hardware. | Highest upfront hardware cost, but usually the lowest retraining and compatibility risk. |
| Windows 10 with ESU | Preserves existing Windows applications during a transition. | Existing Windows 10 device; enrollment conditions apply. | Short-term continuation while planning migration or replacement. | Consumer and organizational ESU provide continued Critical and Important security updates after October 14, 2025, but this is not a return to ordinary support. | Eligibility, edition, region, account, payment and enrollment conditions vary and must be verified before relying on the program. |
ChromeOS Flex: best for browser-first computing
ChromeOS Flex is a practical candidate when nearly all of your work happens in a browser and you do not depend on Windows desktop applications. Google says Flex works on most Windows, Mac and Linux devices made over the last 10 or more years. “Most” is not a guarantee for your computer: Google certifies exact model names and numbers, and similar-looking variants can have unexpected problems.
What certification guarantees
On certified models, Google lists installation, networking where present, keyboard, display and sleep/resume among the baseline functions guaranteed. Other features that Google tests—such as Bluetooth, touchscreen input, function keys and SD-card slots—are not guaranteed on every certified model. Read the notes for the exact model before deciding that a feature is available.

Certification has an end date
Each certified device has a certified-until date. After that date, Google says the device is no longer eligible for Google support or continuing testing, and updates are not guaranteed. A device that installs successfully today can therefore have a shorter dependable life than a newer certified model.
Check application limitations
- List every application you use, including accounting, tax, engineering, creative, medical, school and line-of-business software.
- For each Windows program, identify a browser version or a Linux-compatible replacement before installing Flex.
- Confirm that required file formats can be opened and exported by the web services you plan to use.
- Test printers, scanners, webcams, Bluetooth accessories and accessibility hardware; a browser workflow does not guarantee peripheral support.
Install only after a tested backup
Google provides an official preparation guide for creating installation media on a Windows, Mac or Linux target. Follow the current guide and its current media requirements rather than relying on an old tutorial. Installation can erase the internal drive, so copy your files to an external hard drive or USB key and open several files from the backup to confirm that it is readable.
Linux Mint or Ubuntu: full desktop alternatives
Linux Mint and Ubuntu are candidates for people who want a locally installed desktop instead of a browser-only environment. Both can run common productivity, web and media tasks, but compatibility depends on the exact application and hardware. Do not choose between them solely on claims that one is always lighter, easier or better: release requirements and support policies change, and the current official pages must be checked for the version you intend to install.
Build an application inventory
- Separate must-have applications from occasional utilities.
- For every Windows-only application, check whether an official Linux build, a web version or a documented compatibility method exists.
- Verify that your organization, school or service provider permits the replacement application and that it preserves required file formats.
- Plan how you will access Windows-only software that cannot be replaced; a second supported Windows computer may be simpler than forcing an uncertain workaround.
Test hardware in a live session
When the chosen distribution provides a live environment, boot it from installation media without immediately replacing Windows. Test wireless networking, wired networking, display resolution, graphics acceleration, speakers, microphones, webcams, Bluetooth, printers, scanners, sleep and resume, external monitors and accessibility devices. A successful boot alone proves very little; your normal work must function.
Keep a recovery route
Write down the computer’s original Windows edition, activation information where applicable, storage layout and recovery procedure. Keep the original recovery media or create it before changing partitions. If Linux does not meet a critical need, you should be able to restore the previous system or move to a supported replacement without losing personal data.
When staying with Windows is the better decision
Use a supported Windows 11 replacement
If a program, game, driver or specialist peripheral is essential and has no supported web or Linux alternative, a supported Windows 11 PC is usually the least disruptive long-term route. Microsoft recommends moving to a supported Windows 11 device when current hardware does not meet the requirements. Confirm the replacement’s exact processor and device eligibility before buying; do not assume that a product family remains supported across every configuration.

Use Windows 10 ESU only as a transition
Microsoft describes consumer and organizational Extended Security Updates enrollment for Windows 10 after October 14, 2025. ESU supplies continued Critical and Important security updates for enrolled devices, but it does not restore normal feature development, ordinary technical support or a supported Windows 11 hardware status. Eligibility and terms can depend on edition, region, account, payment and enrollment route. Verify those conditions directly before budgeting around ESU.
Prepare before changing the operating system
- Make a complete backup. Copy documents, photos, browser data, mail archives, encryption keys, license records and any application-specific data to an external hard drive or USB key. Open representative files from the backup.
- Create a recovery plan. Keep Windows recovery media, installation credentials and a written record of the current disk layout. Know how to boot from external media on your model.
- Inventory applications. Mark each program as browser-based, Linux-compatible, replaceable or Windows-only. Do not erase Windows until every essential item has a workable path.
- Inventory devices. Test or research the exact printer, scanner, webcam, Wi-Fi adapter, graphics hardware, audio device, Bluetooth accessory and accessibility hardware.
- Check exact-model support. For ChromeOS Flex, read the certified model entry and certified-until date. For Linux, check the current distribution requirements and hardware documentation.
- Prepare installation media. Use the current official preparation instructions for the selected operating system. Confirm the required media type and capacity from those instructions instead of assuming an old specification.
- Run a trial. Use a live session or another non-destructive test whenever available. Connect the devices you use every day and perform representative tasks.
- Schedule the migration. Choose a time when you can restore the backup, contact application support or use another computer if a driver or application fails.
Installation paths and what to verify
ChromeOS Flex
- Confirm the exact computer model and its current certification status.
- Read the model notes, including known limitations and the certified-until date.
- Follow Google’s current preparation guide to create the installer.
- Boot the target computer from the installer and test networking, display, keyboard, sleep/resume and the peripherals important to you.
- Only start the installation after confirming that the backup is readable and that Windows-only applications have an alternative.
- After installation, verify updates, account access, file synchronization, printing and recovery options.
Linux Mint or Ubuntu
- Download the current release from the distribution’s official site and read its current requirements.
- Create installation media using the documented method.
- Boot a live session when available and test the complete hardware and application checklist.
- Confirm disk encryption, partitioning and boot choices before accepting changes; installation can destroy existing data.
- Install only after preserving the Windows recovery path and verifying the backup.
- Apply the distribution’s current updates, then retest graphics, audio, networking, sleep, printers and external displays.
Common failure modes and recovery choices
The installer boots but Wi-Fi does not work
Use wired networking or another computer to obtain the documented driver or firmware package for the chosen operating system. If the exact adapter is unsupported and networking is essential, stop the migration and retain Windows or choose different hardware.
The display is limited or unstable
Test the internal panel and every external monitor before erasing Windows. Graphics compatibility can affect resolution, acceleration, suspend and battery life. If the live environment cannot provide a usable display, do not treat the installed system as a safe replacement.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA printer, scanner or accessibility device is missing
Check the manufacturer’s support information for the exact model and connection method. A generic driver may print but fail scanning, duplexing, buttons or accessibility functions. Keep the previous system available until the complete device workflow succeeds.
A required Windows application has no acceptable replacement
Do not assume that a web substitute will preserve every feature, file format or compliance requirement. Keep Windows through an eligible ESU transition, use another supported Windows computer or replace the old PC with supported Windows 11 hardware.
The new system does not meet expectations
Restore from the verified backup or reinstall the original recovery image, then review the failed requirement. A failed trial is useful information: it identifies a hardware or application dependency before permanent data loss.

How to choose by user profile
Mostly web services
Choose ChromeOS Flex only if the exact model is certified, the certification date is acceptable and every essential peripheral works. Its simplicity is valuable when browser services are your primary tools; it is a poor fit for Windows-only desktop software.

Local files and a traditional desktop
Evaluate Linux Mint and Ubuntu with a live session. Select the distribution whose current release and hardware behavior match your needs, not a generic reputation. Keep a Windows fallback for applications that cannot be replaced.
Professional or specialist Windows software
Use a supported Windows 11 PC when downtime, compatibility or regulatory requirements outweigh the cost of new hardware. ESU can provide a limited bridge while you migrate, but it should not become the permanent support plan.
Older computer with uncertain hardware
Invest the effort first in backup and non-destructive testing. If the device has failing storage, unreliable memory or unsupported graphics, an operating-system change will not solve the underlying hardware risk; replacement is safer.
Cost and effort beyond the operating-system download
The operating system itself is only one part of the decision. Include the time to make and verify backups, create installation media, test applications, learn a new desktop, resolve drivers, recreate accounts and restore files. Include the possibility of a replacement keyboard, network adapter, printer or computer, as well as any paid application or support subscription your workflow requires. No current product prices are established here, so compare real local prices only after identifying the option that passes your compatibility tests.

Start with an eligibility check, then choose according to application and hardware fit. ChromeOS Flex is the focused browser-first option when the exact model is certified. Linux Mint and Ubuntu are sensible full-desktop candidates when live testing confirms your devices and applications. If Windows-only software is essential, use a supported Windows 11 PC or treat Windows 10 ESU as a limited transition while you replace the hardware. In every case, a verified backup and a realistic recovery plan come before installation.
