Seagate Technology (NASDAQ: STX) is the closest direct alternative to Western Digital after Western Digital completed its HDD-and-flash separation on February 21, 2025. Investors seeking flash storage can look at Sandisk (NASDAQ: SNDK); broader memory exposure comes from Micron Technology (NASDAQ: MU) or SK hynix (KRX: 000660.KS). For enterprise storage platforms rather than storage components, Pure Storage (NYSE: PSTG) and NetApp (NASDAQ: NTAP) provide different exposures. These companies are not interchangeable: each sits at a different layer of the storage stack, sells into different markets and carries different technology-cycle, capital-intensity and customer risks.
Why Western Digital alternatives changed in 2025
Western Digital is no longer a combined hard-disk-drive (HDD) and flash company. Its fiscal 2025 filing says the separation of the two businesses was completed on February 21, 2025. Western Digital retained the HDD operation, while Sandisk became the standalone flash business.
That change matters when you select a comparable stock. A pre-spin comparison that treats Western Digital as both an HDD and NAND company can point you toward the wrong exposure. The post-spin Western Digital is primarily a high-capacity HDD business. Its filing describes HDDs as “critical components in the worldwide data infrastructure market, powering the digital economy.” The closest product-level comparison is therefore Seagate, while flash and enterprise-storage alternatives require different companies.

The right choice depends on what you mean by “data-storage exposure”: mechanical drives for cloud capacity, NAND and solid-state drives (SSDs), memory chips that support servers and AI systems, or complete storage platforms sold to enterprises and cloud operators.

The table shows why a single “best” ticker does not exist. Seagate most closely tracks HDD demand. Sandisk most closely tracks standalone flash. Micron and SK hynix add memory-chip cycles that can be driven by servers, AI accelerators and mobile devices. Pure Storage and NetApp depend more on enterprise infrastructure budgets, software, services and subscriptions.
How to choose the right type of storage exposure
1. Identify the storage layer
HDDs store data magnetically on spinning platters and remain important where very large capacity and cost per stored terabyte matter. NAND flash stores data electronically and enables SSDs, memory cards and embedded storage. DRAM is working memory rather than long-term storage, but it is economically connected to data-center and AI infrastructure. Storage-system vendors combine components with controllers, software, support and cloud services.
Choosing the layer first prevents false comparisons. An HDD manufacturer and an all-flash-array platform can both benefit from data growth while having very different revenue drivers, margins, capital requirements and competitive threats.

A focused component company can provide a clearer storage thesis but usually has greater sensitivity to price cycles, inventory corrections and large-customer purchasing decisions. A diversified memory company may reduce dependence on one product while adding exposure to DRAM pricing and other semiconductor markets. A platform company can have more software and subscription revenue, but its results depend on enterprise sales execution and IT-budget timing.
3. Map the end markets
- Cloud and hyperscale data centers: relevant to high-capacity HDDs, enterprise SSDs, DRAM and storage systems.
- Enterprise infrastructure: particularly important for Pure Storage and NetApp, where controller software, support and cloud integration accompany hardware.
- Client and consumer devices: meaningful for Sandisk, Micron and SK hynix through SSDs, managed NAND and removable or embedded flash.
- Automotive and industrial equipment: part of Micron’s and SK hynix’s stated markets, with different qualification cycles than consumer electronics.
4. Check recurring-services exposure
Component makers primarily ship products, so revenue follows units, capacity, average selling prices and manufacturing costs. Platform companies can add support contracts, subscriptions and cloud consumption. Pure Storage’s Evergreen subscriptions are part of its platform approach. NetApp describes services embedded in Amazon AWS, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud. The filings cited here do not establish a comparable recurring-revenue percentage for any of the six companies, so treat “subscription” as a business-model feature rather than an assumed financial ratio.
5. Consider capital intensity and technology cycles
HDD and NAND manufacturing require substantial equipment and process investment. Capacity additions can oversupply the market, pushing prices down before demand catches up. Memory companies face similar boom-and-bust dynamics, with DRAM and NAND prices changing faster than many customers’ purchasing plans. Storage-system vendors generally buy components from the supply chain, but they invest heavily in product development, sales, support and cloud integration instead.

6. Review geographic, customer and regulatory exposure
Before buying any alternative, check where it manufactures, where it sells, how concentrated its largest customers are and which export controls or trade rules affect its products. These risks can differ materially even when two companies sell into the same data center. A Korean listing such as SK hynix also introduces local-market, currency and trading-access considerations for investors outside Korea.

Seagate Technology: the closest HDD alternative
What the business represents
Seagate is the most direct public-market comparison for post-spin Western Digital because both companies focus on HDD storage. Seagate’s fiscal 2025 report discusses competition in mass-capacity and legacy storage and describes its HAMR-based Mozaic platform for scaling HDD capacity.
That makes Seagate the natural choice when your thesis is that cloud providers and other large customers will continue adding economical, very high-capacity magnetic storage. It is also the clearest alternative for readers asking, “What stock is like WDC?” after the separation.
When Seagate fits
- You want exposure concentrated in HDDs rather than NAND or enterprise software.
- Your thesis depends on mass-capacity storage demand, including large data-center archives and other capacity-heavy workloads.
- You want to compare two major HDD suppliers’ technology road maps, customer mix and manufacturing execution.
Important limitations
Seagate is not a substitute for Western Digital’s former flash business. Its results remain sensitive to HDD demand, average selling prices, component costs, production utilization and purchasing concentration among large customers. HAMR and Mozaic are technology platforms, not a guarantee of a particular financial outcome. Compare current product qualifications, capacity shipments and customer commitments using the companies’ latest filings rather than assuming that a technology announcement will immediately change earnings.
Sandisk: the closest standalone flash alternative
What changed after the separation
Sandisk says it is a standalone Nasdaq-listed company focused on NAND-flash storage devices and solutions. Its stated markets include AI data centers, edge devices and consumers. Because Sandisk holds the flash business separated from Western Digital, it is the most direct way to seek the flash exposure that no longer sits inside Western Digital.
When Sandisk fits
- You want NAND and SSD exposure rather than mechanical-drive exposure.
- You expect flash demand from AI infrastructure, edge computing or consumer devices to grow.
- You prefer a focused flash company instead of a diversified memory supplier.
What to investigate
NAND is a cyclical market. Examine supply growth, inventory levels, contract and spot pricing, product mix and the share of revenue from data-center, client and consumer products. A flash-focused company can benefit strongly during an upcycle and suffer quickly when manufacturers add too much capacity. Do not infer Sandisk’s risk from Western Digital’s post-spin HDD profile; they are now separate securities with separate financial statements.

Micron Technology: diversified memory with storage products
Products and markets
Micron reports DRAM, NAND and NOR products, including SSDs and managed NAND. Its products serve data-center, client, consumer, automotive and industrial markets. This gives investors storage exposure while also adding substantial DRAM and broader semiconductor exposure.
Micron’s filing says SSDs offer “significant performance and features over hard disk drives,” including smaller form factors, faster read and write speeds, higher reliability and lower power consumption. Those advantages explain why SSDs are important in performance-sensitive systems, even though HDDs remain relevant for economical bulk capacity.
When Micron fits
- You want one company spanning storage and working-memory markets.
- You expect data-center or AI investment to lift both memory and storage demand.
- You want exposure across automotive and industrial markets in addition to computing and consumer electronics.
Trade-offs
Micron is less pure than Seagate or Sandisk. Its results can be affected by DRAM pricing, memory inventory, smartphone and PC cycles, automotive production and semiconductor capital spending. That diversification can broaden the opportunity set, but it also means a storage thesis alone will not explain all of the company’s performance.
SK hynix: Korean-listed memory and NAND exposure
Scope of the business
SK hynix covers DRAM, SSD and NAND Storage, with product categories serving servers, networking, mobile, PC, consumer and automotive markets. The company is listed in Korea under ticker 000660.KS, so investors should confirm access through their broker, local trading hours, currency conversion and tax treatment.
When it fits
SK hynix can suit an investor who wants broad memory exposure and is comfortable with a non-U.S. listing. Its server and networking categories can connect it to data-center investment, while mobile, PC, consumer and automotive products diversify the demand base.
Risks specific to the comparison
SK hynix should not be treated as a one-for-one Western Digital replacement. It is a memory semiconductor company, not an HDD specialist. In addition to NAND conditions, analyze DRAM cycles, Korean-market factors, foreign-exchange movements, geopolitical exposure and the company’s customer and manufacturing concentration.

Pure Storage: enterprise all-flash infrastructure
What it sells
Pure Storage’s fiscal 2025 10-K describes the Pure Platform, including FlashArray, FlashBlade and Evergreen subscriptions. The offering spans on-premises, cloud and hosted workloads. This is an enterprise infrastructure model: customers buy an integrated system and its operating environment rather than a bare drive.

- You want enterprise all-flash exposure rather than component manufacturing.
- You value a platform model with subscriptions, support and software features.
- Your thesis is that organizations will modernize performance-sensitive workloads and consolidate storage management.
Why it behaves differently from HDD stocks
Pure Storage’s demand is tied to enterprise project approvals, refresh cycles, workload migrations and sales execution. Its economics include hardware, software and subscription relationships. It can benefit from flash adoption without carrying the same direct NAND-factory exposure as a component maker, but it competes in a different market and may react differently when corporate IT budgets tighten.
NetApp: hybrid-cloud and public-cloud data infrastructure
Platform and cloud scope
NetApp’s fiscal 2025 10-K describes unified storage optimized for flash, disk and cloud, along with services embedded in Amazon AWS, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud. It therefore provides exposure to storage infrastructure across on-premises, hybrid-cloud and public-cloud environments rather than to a single drive technology.
Published operating figure
NetApp reported a $4.1 billion all-flash-array annualized revenue run rate in fiscal 2025, up 14% year over year. This is an annualized run-rate measure, not the same as recognized annual revenue, so it should not be compared directly with a company’s full-year sales without understanding the definition.
When NetApp fits
NetApp can fit an investor seeking a broader data-infrastructure business with cloud integration, unified storage and services. It is less suitable if the goal is a pure bet on HDD capacity or NAND pricing. Evaluate cloud consumption, subscription and support trends, product mix, public-cloud partnerships and enterprise spending conditions.

Risks that apply across the group
Technology substitution
HDDs, SSDs, cloud services and memory products compete for portions of the same infrastructure budget but are optimized for different workloads. Faster SSDs can displace HDDs in performance-sensitive applications, while HDDs can remain attractive for capacity-heavy archives. A company can lose share in one workload while total data stored continues to grow.

Supply-and-demand cycles
Component suppliers can experience sharp swings in pricing and utilization when customers over-order or manufacturers add capacity. Review inventory, production plans, contract structure and average selling prices instead of assuming that secular data growth produces smooth earnings.
Customer concentration
Large cloud and enterprise customers can represent substantial purchasing power. A delayed build-out, internal inventory correction or supplier change can affect a component maker quickly. Platform vendors face concentration in major accounts and channel partners as well, but their contracts and services may make the revenue pattern different.
Capital intensity and execution
Manufacturing businesses must fund process technology, equipment and capacity while maintaining yields. Platform vendors must fund research, sales, support and cloud integrations. Compare free-cash-flow conversion, capital spending and research commitments in the latest filings before deciding that one business is less risky than another.
Recommended Free Tools
Geopolitical and regulatory exposure
Semiconductor and storage supply chains cross multiple jurisdictions. Export controls, tariffs, sanctions, data-residency rules and restrictions on advanced technology can change the addressable market or raise costs. These risks deserve separate review for a U.S.-listed company and a Korean-listed company.
A practical due-diligence checklist
- Confirm the listing and business scope. Verify the ticker, exchange and whether the company is an HDD maker, flash supplier, diversified memory vendor or storage-platform provider.
- Read the latest annual and quarterly filings. Check segment definitions, end-market descriptions, customer concentration, manufacturing footprint and risk factors.
- Separate units from prices. Determine whether growth comes from more capacity shipped, higher average selling prices, mix improvement or acquisitions.
- Measure recurring revenue carefully. Distinguish subscriptions, support and cloud consumption from one-time hardware sales; do not assume every “annualized run rate” equals reported revenue.
- Stress-test the cycle. Consider what happens if NAND, DRAM or HDD prices fall, enterprise budgets slow or a hyperscale customer delays orders.
- Check currency, tax and access issues. This is especially important for SK hynix and any investor buying outside the company’s home market.
- Use current market data separately. The evidence summarized here does not establish current share prices, valuation multiples, dividend yields or analyst targets. Obtain those figures from a current, regulated market-data source before making a decision.
How to combine exposures without confusing them
An investor who wants a broad storage theme could conceptually divide the thesis by layer: an HDD position for economical bulk capacity, a flash or memory position for SSD and semiconductor growth, and a platform position for enterprise software and services. That approach can reduce dependence on one technology, but it also creates more holdings and introduces overlapping customer, geographic and macroeconomic risks.
Alternatively, choose one company whose layer matches the thesis most closely. Seagate is the cleanest HDD comparison; Sandisk is the cleanest post-spin flash comparison; Micron or SK hynix broaden the thesis into memory; Pure Storage and NetApp shift it toward enterprise infrastructure. The appropriate choice depends on the exposure you actually want, not on which ticker appears most similar by name.
Bottom line
For a direct Western Digital replacement focused on HDDs, start with Seagate. For the flash business separated from Western Digital, Sandisk is the closest standalone match. Micron and SK hynix are broader memory investments that include NAND and SSDs but also depend on DRAM and other semiconductor markets. Pure Storage and NetApp are enterprise-platform alternatives whose software, subscriptions and cloud services make them fundamentally different from component manufacturers. Compare each candidate at the correct storage layer, then verify current financial and market data before investing.
