There is no single best replacement for every driver. Choose according to the countries and roads you use, whether you need maps stored on your phone, how important live congestion and incident reports are, and whether the app works with your phone-to-car system. Features, coverage and paid options can change by country and app version, so confirm the current listing and help pages for your market before relying on a feature.
For a practical starting point, investigate HERE WeGo for documented offline downloads and CarPlay support, TomTom for a driving-focused app with live traffic and road-hazard information, Organic Maps or OsmAnd for offline OpenStreetMap-based navigation, Sygic for offline maps with optional paid extras, Apple Maps if you already use Apple devices, and a dedicated GPS if you want navigation hardware separate from your phone.
Which alternative should you choose?
Use this shortlist as a decision aid rather than a universal ranking. The evidence for some features comes from a US App Store listing or secondary reporting, and availability can differ elsewhere.

What makes a genuine alternative?
“Alternative” can mean several different things. Replacing the app on your phone does not necessarily change who owns the service, where map data comes from, or what information is sent online. Decide which separation you actually want:
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Different app: You want another interface or routing style while keeping a phone-based workflow.
- Different data model: You prefer OpenStreetMap-based maps or locally stored map files instead of a commercial search ecosystem.
- Less dependence on a connection: You need the route to continue when cellular service disappears.
- Different ownership: You do not want a Google-owned navigation product. Waze is not independent on that criterion: the Associated Press reports that Google bought Waze in 2013.
- Different hardware: You want a standalone navigator that can remain in the car even when your phone is unavailable.
Waze can still be useful as a distinct app for community-driven road information, but changing from Google Maps to Waze does not provide corporate separation from Google.
How to evaluate any navigation app before switching
1. Test your actual routes and countries
Start with the places you drive, not a worldwide feature list. Enter a home address, a regular commute, a rural destination and a cross-border route if relevant. Check whether roads, house numbers, business names, one-way restrictions and turn instructions are correct. Coverage can be strong in one country and incomplete in another, and a map can contain a place without providing the same routing detail.
2. Separate offline routing from offline display
A downloaded map is useful only if the app can calculate and recalculate routes without a connection. Before a trip, put the phone in airplane mode and test:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Searching for a saved address and an unsaved street.
- Starting a route and deliberately missing a turn.
- Recalculating after moving several blocks away.
- Finding a fuel, charging or rest stop, if that category matters to your journey.
- Receiving voice guidance while the screen is locked or the phone is connected to the car.
Live congestion, newly reported crashes, weather alerts, cloud-synced favorites and some business information normally require a connection. Do not assume that an app’s online map view and its offline navigation have identical capabilities.
3. Identify the source of incident information
Provider-generated traffic feeds, government road notices and user-submitted reports are different things. User reports can be valuable on busy routes but may be sparse on quiet roads or in countries with fewer users. Treat a feature description as an availability statement, not a promise that every route will have the same report density.
4. Confirm the in-car path
Check the current app listing and your vehicle’s documentation for Apple CarPlay, Android Auto or another supported display method. HERE WeGo’s cited US listing documents CarPlay; the available material does not establish a complete compatibility matrix for the other candidates. A phone app can be excellent on the handset and still be unavailable, limited or presented differently on the car screen.
5. Check costs and limits in your market
Subscriptions, trials, one-time unlocks, map-download limits and traffic services change by region and over time. There is no reliable current comparative price table for this shortlist. Open each app’s current store page, note which functions are free, and confirm whether a paid feature renews automatically before starting a long trip.

Candidate guide
HERE WeGo: a strong first check for offline phone navigation
The US App Store listing for HERE WeGo describes downloadable maps for offline journeys, voice-guided driving, Apple CarPlay and road incidents that are user-submitted or confirmed. That combination makes it a sensible first candidate if you want maps stored locally and a route shown on a compatible in-car display.
Do not generalize the US listing to every market. Before depending on it, open the listing for your country, download the regions you need, and perform the airplane-mode test. Verify whether the roads you use are included at the detail level you need and whether your vehicle setup exposes the functions you expect. The cited material does not establish a full Android Auto compatibility list or identical incident-reporting coverage worldwide.
TomTom: driving-focused traffic and hazard information
The Associated Press describes TomTom’s free phone app as designed for drivers and offering live traffic and road-hazard information. It is worth considering when congestion and hazards are more important to you than a general-purpose map interface.
The available evidence does not establish the app’s current offline behavior, supported car systems, subscription boundaries or country-by-country coverage. Check the current local listing before treating it as an offline replacement or assuming that a particular traffic layer is included without payment. Test a route in the areas where you drive and confirm how the app handles a lost connection.
Apple Maps: convenient for people already using Apple devices
Apple Maps is a natural candidate if your phone, car and saved places already live in Apple’s ecosystem. However, the available search did not retrieve current official documentation detailed enough to make broad claims about its offline functions, traffic coverage or regional availability. Use Apple’s current Maps feature-availability page and the app listing for your country before making a country-specific decision.
Check the exact behavior on your hardware rather than assuming that a feature shown in another country or operating-system version is present on yours. Confirm voice guidance, route recalculation, search results and your preferred CarPlay workflow on a short, familiar drive.
Organic Maps: investigate for offline OpenStreetMap use
Recent comparison coverage names Organic Maps as an offline, OpenStreetMap-oriented option. That makes it relevant when keeping map data on the device is the main requirement and you are comfortable with a different place-search ecosystem.

- Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
OpenStreetMap-based coverage can differ from commercial map services. Verify addresses, businesses, turn restrictions and trails on the routes you use, and consult the current official app information for download size, update behavior, routing modes and car-display support. The available evidence is secondary, so do not infer a particular feature from the app’s offline focus alone.

OsmAnd: another offline, OpenStreetMap-oriented choice
OsmAnd is also identified in recent comparison coverage as an offline OpenStreetMap-oriented option. It belongs on the shortlist for drivers who prefer local map data and want to investigate a more configurable mapping environment.
As with any map built on community-maintained data, inspect your own routes before relying on it. Check current official documentation for the functions you need, including address search, route profiles, map updates, navigation on your phone and any integration with your car’s display. Confirm what is included at no cost and what requires a paid plan in your country.
Sygic: offline maps with paid traffic and safety extras
The Associated Press reports that Sygic offers free offline maps and paid extras that include traffic updates, speed-camera warnings and dashcam functionality. It may suit a driver who wants a route to remain available without cellular service and is willing to pay for selected live or safety-oriented functions.
Feature and subscription terms are volatile. Check the current store listing for your country, whether a traffic service is recurring or one-time, which devices support dashcam mode, and whether speed-camera warnings are legal where you drive. Download the relevant maps and test route recalculation offline before leaving coverage.
Dedicated GPS hardware: when a phone is not the right tool
A standalone navigator avoids relying on a phone battery, phone storage and a handset connection to the car. It can be attractive for a vehicle that lacks a modern display system, for shared cars, or for drivers who want a permanent, glanceable screen.
A September 2026 TechRadar report describes a redesigned Garmin Drive unit with an ultra-wide screen, EV routing, live traffic and voice controls. The report does not establish a specific model number, current retail price, service terms or availability in every country. Treat those as purchase checks, not guaranteed specifications. Ask whether traffic arrives through a built-in connection, a paired phone or an optional service; determine how map updates are delivered; and verify that the unit supports your vehicle type and charging network if EV routing matters.

Set up and test a replacement before a long drive
Download and verify map data
- Install the app only from your phone platform’s current official store listing.
- Open the map-download or offline-map area and select every region crossed by the trip, including border areas and likely detours.
- Wait for downloads to finish on Wi-Fi, then check the app’s storage or map-management screen for an update date.
- Disable mobile data or enable airplane mode and search for both a saved destination and a new street.
- Start navigation, miss a turn safely, and confirm that the app can recalculate without reconnecting.
Connect to the car
- Pair or connect the phone using the vehicle maker’s documented CarPlay or Android Auto procedure.
- Open the navigation app from the car display and verify that the map, voice prompts and next-turn information appear.
- Test audio with music or a call active so you know how prompts are mixed and whether the phone is using the intended speaker.
- Check the route on the vehicle screen while stationary; do not change settings while driving.
- If the app is missing from the car interface, consult the current app listing and vehicle documentation rather than assuming the phone version supports projection.
Prepare a fallback
Save the destination address in a form you can read without the app, keep a charging cable and mount available, and know where the paper or built-in vehicle backup is stored. A second navigation app is useful only if its maps have also been downloaded and tested; installing it at the roadside does not create offline coverage.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshooting common failures
The map works online but not in airplane mode
The selected region may not have finished downloading, or the app may require an online search before it can route. Reconnect to Wi-Fi, confirm the region is listed as current, and repeat the address-search and missed-turn test. If the app still cannot recalculate offline, treat it as an online aid rather than an offline solution.
Traffic reports disappeared
Live congestion and incident feeds need a connection and may depend on provider or user reports. Restore data service, check that traffic layers are enabled, and do not expect the same report density on every road. An offline map can continue guiding without those live overlays.
The route is wrong or a road is missing
Compare the app with a recent road sign or official closure notice, then try another map source before entering a restricted road. Report a persistent map error through the app’s current correction process. For an unfamiliar country, download a second offline-capable option and keep the destination details separately.
The car display does not show the app
Confirm that the phone, vehicle software and cable or wireless adapter meet the current requirements. Some apps document CarPlay but not Android Auto, and some vehicle systems expose only approved navigation apps. Update the app and vehicle software when appropriate, then check the local app listing for supported projection systems.
Voice guidance is silent
Raise the navigation volume while a prompt is playing, verify that the car is on the intended audio source, and check the app’s voice setting. Test with the phone disconnected from the car to separate an app problem from a vehicle-audio problem.

Privacy, ownership and data choices
Offline capability is not proof of a particular privacy policy. An app can store map files locally and still use online services for search, traffic, analytics or account synchronization. Read the current privacy documentation for each candidate and inspect permissions before signing in or enabling background location.

If corporate ownership is your deciding factor, exclude Waze from a Google-independent shortlist because Google acquired it in 2013. If your concern is simply avoiding Google Maps’ interface, Waze remains a separate app experience, but it does not satisfy an ownership-based requirement.
What usage figures do—and do not—tell you
Apple’s 2022 Newsroom report cited data.ai estimates of 88 million daily active iPhone users for Google Maps and 13 million for Waze. Those figures covered July 2020 through June 2021 and are historical iPhone estimates, not current worldwide user counts. They can indicate the scale of the services at that time, but they should not be used as a present-day ranking of map accuracy or traffic-report quality.
The same Apple report identified NAVER Map, KakaoMap and TMAP as popular iOS mapping apps in Korea, ahead of Google Maps and Apple Maps in the findings it described. That is a country-specific observation, not evidence that those apps lead in other markets.

You need dependable offline coverage
Begin with HERE WeGo, Organic Maps, OsmAnd and Sygic, then run the airplane-mode tests on your own routes. HERE WeGo has the clearest cited evidence for downloaded maps and CarPlay; the other offline claims require confirmation in their current official listings.
You care most about live traffic and hazards
Investigate TomTom and HERE WeGo first, while distinguishing provider feeds from user reports. TomTom’s live traffic and road-hazard description comes from the Associated Press, and HERE WeGo’s incident capability comes from its US App Store listing. Confirm local coverage before replacing a familiar app.
You use Apple hardware and want the least friction
Check Apple Maps on your exact phone, operating-system version and vehicle. Its ecosystem fit is the reason to investigate it, but country-specific capabilities must be confirmed from current Apple documentation.
You want to minimize dependence on a phone
Compare a dedicated GPS with your vehicle’s built-in navigation. The reported Garmin Drive direction—ultra-wide display, EV routing, live traffic and voice controls—may suit this profile, but verify the exact model, map updates, connectivity and service costs before buying.
You want to leave Google ownership behind
Choose a non-Google provider or an offline OpenStreetMap-oriented app, and do not count Waze as corporate separation. Review each provider’s current ownership and privacy documentation rather than inferring it from the app’s name or offline functions.
A practical decision sequence
- Write down the countries, cities, rural roads and border crossings you actually drive.
- Mark whether uninterrupted offline routing is essential or merely convenient.
- Choose two candidates that match that priority and one fallback.
- Verify current local listings, map coverage, car-display support and paid limits.
- Download maps, test search and recalculation in airplane mode, and test the car connection while parked.
- Use the candidate on familiar trips before trusting it for an unfamiliar or remote journey.
This process produces a better result than selecting a global “winner.” Navigation quality depends on the roads, country, phone, vehicle and information sources that are relevant to you.
