The best UPI alternative depends on who pays you and how you fulfil orders. For most Indian ecommerce, SaaS and service websites, start with a hosted payment gateway that combines credit and debit cards, net banking and wallets in one checkout. Add direct NEFT, IMPS or RTGS instructions for invoice-led B2B collections. If you sell internationally, add an eligible cross-border card processor or wallet rather than assuming that a domestic gateway covers overseas payments.
No option is a universal substitute. Cards bring broad domestic and international reach but add authentication, fraud and chargeback concerns. Net banking serves customers who prefer their bank login. Bank transfers avoid gateway integration but require manual reconciliation. Wallets can be fast for repeat mobile users, while international providers introduce eligibility, foreign-exchange, reserve and documentation requirements.
Which payment methods can replace UPI?
UPI is only one part of India’s digital-payment landscape. The Reserve Bank of India identifies cards, net banking, mobile banking, UPI, USSD and Aadhaar-enabled modes as digital channels. A 2025 Government of India payment summary also lists debit and credit cards, IMPS, NEFT, RTGS, AePS, NETC and prepaid payment instruments (PPIs).

For a website, the practical alternatives fall into six groups:

| Alternative | Best fit | Main strengths | Important trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hosted payment gateway | Ecommerce, SaaS and service checkout | One integration can expose cards, net banking, wallets and sometimes UPI, with hosted checkout and webhooks | Fees, KYC, settlement timing, refunds, method coverage and recurring-payment support vary |
| Credit and debit cards | Domestic and international consumers | Familiar checkout and broad cross-border reach | Issuer or network declines, fraud controls, 3-D Secure, chargebacks and processing fees |
| Net banking | Indian customers who prefer a bank login | Direct account payment without a UPI app | Bank-by-bank availability, redirects, transaction limits and potentially lower conversion than saved methods |
| NEFT, IMPS and RTGS | B2B invoices and high-value collections | Account-to-account payment without a gateway | Manual instructions, proof-of-payment handling, reconciliation work and settlement windows |
| Prepaid wallets | Mobile-first repeat customers | Fast checkout using stored balance | Wallet reach, KYC rules, redemption limits and provider-specific support |
| International processors and wallets | Exporters, freelancers and global digital businesses | Overseas cards or wallet balances and cross-border settlement | Eligibility, export documentation, foreign-exchange costs, reserves, payout timing and regulatory restrictions |
A gateway is usually the closest operational replacement for a UPI-only checkout, but it is not the same as accepting every method directly. Confirm exactly which cards, banks, wallets, currencies, recurring features and countries are enabled for your account.
Choose the alternative by customer and business model
Indian ecommerce with many one-time orders
Use a hosted gateway with cards, net banking and wallets. Customers can choose a method on the same checkout page, and your application can receive a payment-status webhook instead of building separate bank and wallet integrations. Keep a bank-transfer option for unusually large orders or customers whose bank or card is declined.
Subscriptions and recurring billing
Prioritize a provider that explicitly supports recurring payments, mandate creation, retries, cancellation and refund workflows in India and in each target country. Do not infer recurring support merely because one-time cards are accepted. Check whether authentication, customer consent and mandate rules differ by payment method.

NEFT, IMPS or RTGS can be more practical than a consumer checkout. Put unique payment instructions or a reference number on every invoice, then reconcile the incoming credit against that reference. A gateway remains useful when you need automated order release, payment confirmation or online refunds.
Freelancers, exporters and global digital services
Use an international processor or wallet that accepts overseas cards or balances and can legally settle to your Indian business. Verify the entity type, supported countries, export paperwork, foreign-exchange conversion, reserve policy and payout schedule before placing it in production.
Mobile-first repeat customers
Offer wallets alongside cards and net banking when your audience already keeps a balance with a supported wallet. Wallet coverage is not universal, so measure which wallet buttons your customers actually use rather than adding every available option.

Hosted payment gateways: the strongest general-purpose option
A hosted gateway sends the customer to a provider-controlled payment page or checkout component. The provider handles much of the method selection, authentication and payment-status processing, while your site receives a success, failure or pending result through a return URL and, ideally, a signed webhook.

What a gateway can combine
One gateway integration may expose credit cards, debit cards, net banking, wallets and sometimes UPI. Razorpay’s official gateway description lists credit cards, debit cards, net banking, UPI and popular wallets, and identifies Razorpay Payments as an RBI-authorised payment aggregator. That makes it a broad domestic candidate, but you still need to verify current pricing, onboarding eligibility, international acceptance and recurring-payment features for your account.
Gateway implementation sequence
- Confirm eligibility. Check your legal entity, business category, website content, settlement bank account, KYC documents and any restricted-product rules.
- Map required methods. Write down the countries, currencies, cards, banks, wallets and recurring scenarios you need. Ask the provider which are enabled for your merchant profile, not merely advertised generally.
- Create orders server-side. Generate the payable amount and a unique order identifier on your server. Never trust a browser-submitted amount.
- Open hosted checkout. Pass the order identifier and customer details required by the provider. Keep sensitive card data out of your own systems when the hosted flow allows it.
- Verify the result on your server. Validate the provider’s signature or equivalent authentication and match the paid amount, currency and order identifier. Treat the browser redirect as informational until server verification succeeds.
- Process webhooks idempotently. Store the event identifier, ignore duplicate deliveries, and handle success, failure, pending, refund and chargeback events separately.
- Release the order only after confirmation. A customer can close a tab after paying or return before a final status is available. Your order state should include pending and review paths.
- Test recovery paths. Exercise declined cards, interrupted bank redirects, duplicate webhook deliveries, partial refunds, full refunds and a payment that remains pending.
Gateway questions that affect the decision
- Which domestic and international methods are live for your entity and merchant category?
- What are the one-time and recurring-payment capabilities, and do they require separate approval?
- How are settlements described: available balance, settlement date, deductions and reversals?
- Can you issue full and partial refunds from the dashboard and API?
- How are disputes, chargebacks, failed webhooks and delayed bank confirmations reported?
- Can the checkout show method-specific failure messages and a retry option?
- Which currencies can be charged, and in which currency will the bank account be settled?
Credit and debit cards
Cards are the most portable direct alternative to UPI for customers who already have a usable card. They work for Indian buyers and can reach overseas customers when your processor, acquiring setup and regulatory permissions support those transactions.
Advantages
- Customers recognize the card-number, expiry and security-code flow.
- Cards can support domestic and international sales through the same checkout architecture.
- Tokenized or saved-card experiences can reduce repeated data entry, subject to provider and network rules.
Risks to plan for
- Issuer and network declines: a valid card can still be rejected because of limits, risk rules, geography, merchant category or authentication failure.
- 3-D Secure and other authentication: a challenge, redirect or failed hand-off can leave an order pending rather than clearly successful.
- Fraud and chargebacks: retain order, delivery and customer-consent evidence and define who reviews suspicious orders.
- Processing cost: obtain the provider’s current domestic, international, refund and chargeback terms instead of applying a generic percentage.
Offer a clear retry path that does not create a second order. If an issuer declines a card, let the customer try another method without losing the cart.
Net banking
Net banking lets an Indian customer pay through a bank login without opening a UPI application. It is useful when a buyer has funds in a bank account but no preferred UPI app or card.

Net banking is a sensible second method on an Indian checkout, particularly for customers who trust their bank’s authentication. It can also support customers making larger purchases when card limits are a concern.

- Accept all major credit and debit cards and pay one low rate with no hidden fees and no long-term contracts.
- Process chip cards in just two seconds.
- Get your money as soon as the next business day.
- Use it cordlessly with the built-in battery, designed to last all day.
Operational limitations
- Availability is bank-specific and can change as a provider updates its list.
- The flow commonly redirects away from your site, so interrupted sessions and abandoned redirects need explicit handling.
- Bank or provider limits may prevent a transaction even when the customer’s balance is sufficient.
- Conversion can be lower than methods with saved credentials because the customer must select a bank and complete a separate login flow.
Keep the order pending until your server receives and verifies the final status. A return to your website is not, by itself, proof that the bank transfer completed.
NEFT, IMPS and RTGS bank transfers
Direct bank transfer is the most independent alternative: you publish an account, virtual account or payment instruction and ask the customer to transfer the invoice amount. It avoids a consumer gateway, but moves payment matching and confirmation into your operations team or your own banking integration.
Which transfer to use
| Method | Good fit | What to design around |
|---|---|---|
| NEFT | Invoice-led collections where the customer can follow written instructions | Confirmation timing, reference capture and bank-statement reconciliation |
| IMPS | Customers who need an account-to-account transfer path for an order or invoice | Reference matching, bank limits and the fact that your site may not receive an instant authenticated callback |
| RTGS | High-value collections where the customer and bank support the method | Minimum or bank-specific conditions, confirmation timing and manual exception handling |
The table describes workflow fit, not a promise that every bank offers identical limits or service windows. Confirm current conditions with your bank.
How to build a reliable bank-transfer workflow
- Create an invoice or order with a unique reference, exact amount and expiry date.
- Display the beneficiary name, account details and the exact reference the customer must enter. Provide a warning about fake account-change requests.
- Ask the payer to submit a transfer confirmation only as supporting evidence; do not treat a screenshot as final proof.
- Match bank credits by amount, reference, payer information and date. Route ambiguous matches to manual review.
- Mark the order paid only after the credit is visible in the business account or a trusted bank feed confirms it.
- Expire unpaid orders and define what happens when a transfer arrives after expiry or for the wrong amount.
- Send a receipt and retain the invoice, transfer reference and reconciliation record.
Bank transfers are a poor fit for instant digital fulfilment unless you can verify credits automatically. They also do not naturally provide a consumer-style refund button; refunds generally require a separate bank payout and confirmation.
Prepaid wallets
Prepaid wallets use a stored balance and a wallet-specific authentication flow. They can be fast for mobile-first repeat buyers who already use a supported wallet.
Benefits
- Less card-data entry for returning customers.
- A familiar approval flow inside the wallet provider’s environment.
- Potentially useful when a customer’s card is unavailable but the wallet balance is funded.
Limits
- Wallet reach depends on your audience and the provider’s current merchant coverage.
- KYC, balance, redemption and transaction rules can differ by wallet and customer status.
- Wallet-specific refunds, reversals and support cases may not behave like card refunds.
Use wallet buttons as an addition to cards and net banking unless your analytics show that a wallet is dominant for your customers. Keep the payment status and refund ledger in your own order system so that support staff can see the same outcome regardless of method.

International processors and wallets for Indian businesses
Cross-border acceptance is a separate decision from replacing UPI for domestic customers. A provider may accept overseas cards while excluding Indian local methods, or may require a specific Indian entity and export documentation.
Stripe’s India limitation
Stripe’s current India account documentation says eligible India-based companies, limited liability partnerships and sole proprietorships can use Stripe for domestic and international payments. The same documentation states: “We don’t support local payment methods for businesses in India, such as UPI, Netbanking, Buy-Now-Pay-Later, and Equated Monthly Instalments (EMIs).” Therefore Stripe is a candidate for eligible merchants prioritizing card-led international acceptance, not a universal domestic replacement for UPI and net banking.
Other cross-border providers
Government and industry material names PayPal, Wise, Payoneer, Worldpay and Revolut in the cross-border segment serving Indian businesses. Treat those names as a starting point for verification, not as a guarantee of current Indian merchant eligibility, settlement, fees or supported products. Check each provider’s India terms before collecting customer money.
Cross-border checks before launch
- Eligibility: confirm whether your entity, business activity, website and customer geography are accepted.
- Documentation: determine which invoices, contracts, export declarations or purpose codes are required.
- Currency and foreign exchange: identify the customer charge currency, conversion point, spread, taxes and settlement currency.
- Reserves and payout: ask how long funds can be held, what triggers a reserve and how reversals are funded.
- Restricted transactions: confirm rules for digital goods, regulated services, subscriptions and high-risk categories.
- Evidence: retain invoices, delivery records, customer communications and refund decisions.
Do not promise a foreign customer a particular payout date until the provider confirms the schedule for your account and transaction type.
Comparison matrix for a non-UPI payment stack
| Decision factor | Hosted gateway | Cards directly | Net banking | NEFT/IMPS/RTGS | Wallets | International provider |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Checkout automation | High when webhooks and APIs are available | High through a processor | Moderate; redirects require state handling | Low unless bank feeds are integrated | High through a supported gateway | High for supported currencies and methods |
| Domestic Indian coverage | Depends on the gateway; some combine several methods | Generally strong, subject to issuer and processor support | Bank-specific | Broad account-to-account reach, with bank and customer constraints | Provider- and audience-dependent | May exclude local methods |
| International coverage | Varies by gateway and merchant approval | Strongest when international acquiring is enabled | Not a normal overseas checkout method | Not a consumer cross-border checkout substitute | Depends on wallet and country support | Primary use case, subject to eligibility and compliance |

How to launch without UPI as the only option
- Segment customers. Separate Indian consumer checkout, Indian B2B invoices and overseas buyers. Each segment may need a different primary method.
- Select the smallest workable stack. For many sites, that means one domestic gateway plus bank-transfer instructions. Add an international processor only when overseas demand and eligibility justify it.
- Document payment states. Define initiated, pending, paid, failed, expired, refunded, partially refunded and disputed states before writing checkout code.
- Build server-side verification. Match order ID, amount, currency and authenticated provider event. Never fulfil from a client-side success message alone.
- Design support scripts. Give staff procedures for a delayed bank redirect, duplicate charge, missing transfer, partial refund, card dispute and cross-border payout hold.
- Run controlled tests. Test each enabled method in sandbox and then perform a small live transaction. Check the customer receipt, dashboard status, webhook, settlement report and accounting entry.
- Measure by method. Track attempted payments, completed payments, pending duration, decline reason, refund time, support contacts and net settled amount. Do not judge a method only by its advertised availability.
Refunds, disputes and recurring billing
Refunds
Decide whether your policy permits full, partial and automatic refunds. For gateway methods, confirm the API’s idempotency and maximum refund window. For bank transfers, record the beneficiary account and approval trail before sending a separate payout. For wallets and international providers, explain to customers whether the refund returns to the original balance, card or settlement route.

Best Value
- An intuitive interface to easily accept payments and manage your sales.
- Strong, reliable Wi-Fi connection. Free SIM card and mobile data so you can process payments anywhere.
- Great battery capability with an additional charging station.
- A truly portable device. Stay in control of your business, wherever you go.
- Support when you need it. Get in touch with our US-based support through phone, email and chat.
Subscriptions
Recurring billing needs more than a saved card. Verify mandate or consent creation, retry rules, expired credentials, cancellation timing, proration, failed-renewal messaging and the evidence required for a dispute. NEFT, IMPS and RTGS are generally unsuitable for unattended subscription collection because each cycle needs a new customer action or a separate banking arrangement.
Compliance and security checklist
- Complete the provider’s KYC and beneficial-owner checks before launch.
- Use HTTPS and keep payment credentials out of your application whenever a hosted or tokenized flow can do so.
- Validate webhook signatures, reject replayed events and store event IDs for idempotency.
- Limit staff access to payment dashboards and export reports.
- Show the legal business name, support contact, refund policy, delivery or fulfilment terms and privacy information on the website.
- Keep accounting records that distinguish gross charge, tax, provider fee, refund, reserve, FX adjustment and net settlement.
- Ask the provider which payment-data and card-security obligations apply to your integration; do not assume hosted checkout removes every compliance duty.
- Review Indian payment, export and tax requirements with a qualified adviser for your entity and products.
Common failures and how to recover
| Symptom | Likely cause | Recovery |
|---|---|---|
| Customer sees success but order remains unpaid | Browser return arrived before webhook, or signature verification failed | Query the provider server-side, verify amount and order ID, then process the event idempotently |
| Bank-transfer customer sends a screenshot | No authenticated account credit has been matched | Keep the order pending until the bank statement or trusted feed confirms the transaction |
| Card payment is declined repeatedly | Issuer, risk, limit or authentication problem | Offer another card or method, avoid creating duplicate orders, and show a useful retry message |
| Net-banking redirect never returns | Customer closed the bank page or the bank response is delayed | Keep a pending state, provide a status-refresh path and avoid treating the timeout as an immediate failure |
| International payout is held | Eligibility, reserve, FX or export-document review | Use the provider’s compliance channel, submit requested evidence and pause promises about payout timing |
| Refund appears missing | Refund is pending, returned to a different balance, or was issued outside the original route | Match refund ID, original transaction, amount and destination; give the customer a written status |
How to compare total cost
No authoritative cross-provider fee, success-rate or settlement-time benchmark is established in the available material, so a universal ranking would be misleading. Request a written schedule for your entity and expected volume, then calculate:
- transaction and gateway charges;
- taxes and any fixed per-transaction amount;
- international card or wallet surcharges;
- foreign-exchange spread and conversion fees;
- refund and chargeback charges;
- reserve or delayed-settlement effects on working capital;
- engineering and support time for webhooks, reconciliation and exceptions;
- bank fees and staff time for manual NEFT, IMPS or RTGS matching.
A method with a low posted fee can cost more if it creates frequent pending orders, manual reconciliation or failed renewals. Compare net settled revenue and operational effort for the same customer segment.

For most Indian websites
Use a hosted gateway with cards, net banking and wallets, then add a clearly labelled bank-transfer option for invoices or exceptional orders. This gives customers a non-UPI route without forcing your team to maintain separate consumer integrations.
For a B2B-heavy business
Make invoice-based NEFT, IMPS or RTGS the primary collection path, with unique references and a defined reconciliation queue. Keep a gateway for customers who need immediate automated confirmation or online refunds.
For an international-first business
Choose an eligible cross-border processor or wallet for overseas cards and balances, and verify export documentation, FX, reserves and payout timing before launch. Add a domestic gateway separately if Indian customers need net banking or wallets.
For subscriptions
Select a provider only after confirming recurring-payment support, mandate or consent handling, retries, cancellation, refunds and dispute evidence. One-time card acceptance is not proof that automated billing is available.
