There is no single best replacement for every traveler. Choose the tool that matches the job you need done: Wanderlog for a shared, date-based trip hub; TripIt Pro for turning booking emails into an on-trip itinerary with flight alerts; Google Maps lists for collecting and sharing places; Google My Maps for a custom map you can print; and Roadtrippers for routes and stops on a driving holiday. A paper travel planner can back up any of these when you want a physical reference.
The important distinction is between planning and discovery and the final itinerary you use while traveling. If your reservations are already chosen and you mainly want a dependable day-by-day reference, start with TripIt or Wanderlog rather than a map-only collection.
Pick the alternative by the job it performs
“Travel itinerary app” can mean several different things. One traveler wants a shared workspace for dates, reservations, budgets and packing. Another has every booking already made and needs flight-status warnings. Someone else only wants a map of restaurants and sights, while a road-tripper needs fuel, viewpoints and overnight stops along a route. Treating these as the same problem leads to the wrong tool.
| Primary need | Best starting point | Why it fits | What it does not replace |
|---|---|---|---|
| One shared itinerary for a group | Wanderlog | Combines activities, reservations, timing, maps, budgets, packing checklists and collaboration in one trip hub. | Some advanced functions, including automatic Gmail scanning and optimized routes, may require Pro; check the current plan. |
| Booking record and travel-day help | TripIt Pro | Organizes reservations and adds flight-status alerts, alternate-flight information, airport maps, walking directions, reminders and document attachments. | It is not primarily a destination-research or custom-map tool. |
| A shortlist of places to visit | Google Maps lists | Simple private or shared lists with invited collaborators and reorderable places. | A list is not a dated schedule with reservation timing. |
| A map you can customize and print | Google My Maps | Named custom maps can be shared, exported and printed. | The documented workflow does not establish booking timelines or reservation management. |
| Driving routes and stop discovery | Roadtrippers | Built around route stops, recommendations and road-trip planning, with tiered stop limits. | Its plans and prices change, so compare the current limits before paying. |
| Offline, non-digital backup | Printed map plus a paper planner | Readable without a battery, signal or account. | Handwritten pages do not automatically update when a booking changes. |
These choices are complementary rather than mutually exclusive. For example, you can keep reservations in TripIt, save candidate restaurants in a Google Maps list, and print a Google My Maps overview for the car. Use as few layers as you can maintain accurately.

Wanderlog: the broadest shared trip hub
Wanderlog is the closest match when you want one place to assemble a complete trip. Its published feature set covers mapped activities, reservations, trip timing, group collaboration, budgets, packing checklists and offline access. That combination makes it useful for families or friends who need to see both what is happening and when it happens.
What the itinerary can contain
- Activities placed on particular dates or days.
- Reservations alongside sightseeing and other plans.
- A map view that shows the geographic relationship between stops.
- Shared editing for a group itinerary.
- Budget information and packing checklists.
- Offline access for reference when connectivity is unreliable.
Wanderlog’s site also presents automatic Gmail scanning for reservation capture and optimized routes. The allocation of those functions between free and Pro plans can change, so confirm the current plan page before promising a feature to a travel group or building a workflow around it.
When Wanderlog is the right choice
Choose it when the trip is still being coordinated, several people will edit the plan, and you need dates, locations and reservations in the same view. It is also a reasonable starting point for a road trip if you want a general itinerary rather than a service focused exclusively on driving stops.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Where to be cautious
Do not assume every useful function is included at no cost. In particular, check whether the current tier includes the reservation-import method, offline access and route optimization you need. Also decide who owns the master trip and how changes will be communicated; a shared plan is only reliable when one person resolves duplicate or conflicting edits.
Set up a final-itinerary workflow
- Create one trip and set its dates and destination.
- Add confirmed flights, lodging, tours and transport first; mark unconfirmed ideas separately so they are not mistaken for bookings.
- Place each activity on the day and approximate time when it must happen. Leave travel time between locations instead of scheduling back-to-back pins.
- Invite collaborators only after the basic structure is correct, then assign one person to approve changes.
- Check the map and timing together. A geographically close group of activities is usually more useful than a long list sorted only by popularity.
- Before departure, download or otherwise prepare the itinerary for offline use if that option is included in your current plan, and keep confirmation numbers in the reservation entries.
TripIt Pro: best when bookings are already made
TripIt is oriented toward turning travel confirmations into an organized itinerary. TripIt Pro adds the travel-day layer that a simple calendar or place list lacks: flight-status alerts, information about alternate flights, airport maps, walking directions, travel reminders and document attachments.

Why it suits a final itinerary
If your main question is “What is my next reservation, and has anything changed?”, TripIt Pro is more focused than a destination-planning workspace. The value is in having flight, lodging and other booking details in a chronological record, then receiving alerts when a flight status or airport situation changes.
Published price and its qualification
The official TripIt page listed Pro at $49 per year when accessed on October 13, 2026. Treat that as a time-sensitive list price, not a permanent rate; verify the current subscription page, taxes and any regional pricing before purchase.
Useful Pro functions
- Flight-status alerts and alternate-flight information.
- Airport maps and walking directions for navigating a connection.
- Reminders tied to travel arrangements.
- Attachments for documents you need with a reservation.
How to build a dependable booking record
- Forward each confirmed booking to the TripIt account or add it using the currently supported import method.
- Open the resulting itinerary and check names, dates, local times, airports and confirmation numbers against the original confirmation.
- Add reservations that do not import cleanly by hand, especially rail, rental-car, event or small-property bookings.
- Attach documents only after checking that the attachment contains the correct traveler and booking.
- Turn on the reminders and flight alerts you actually want, then review notification permissions on your phone.
- Save an offline or printed fallback for the essential confirmation details. Alerts depend on the service and your device’s connectivity; they should not be your only record.
TripIt Pro is less suitable if your group is still debating restaurants, wants a custom printed map, or needs a shared board of unconfirmed ideas. Pair it with a map list when those are separate needs.
Google Maps lists: the simplest place shortlist
Google Maps lists are map-native collections of saved places. A list can be private or shared, collaborators can be invited, and places can be reordered. This is often enough for a weekend in one city: save museums, restaurants and hotels, then open the list when deciding where to go next.
What lists do well
- Fast saving directly from a place’s map listing.
- Separate lists for categories such as “eat,” “see” and “maybe.”
- Invited collaboration for a couple or group.
- Reordering to create a rough preference sequence.
What lists do not provide
A reordered list is not a timed itinerary. It does not, by itself, establish reservation durations, check-in windows, connection buffers or a complete booking record. If the group needs a precise day plan, move confirmed items into a dated itinerary tool.

Visibility to understand before sharing
People viewing a shared list can see collaborator names and profile pictures. That account visibility may matter for work trips, surprise travel or groups that do not want personal profiles exposed. Invite only the people who need editing access and review the list’s sharing setting before sending it.
Organize a list for on-trip use
- Create one list for confirmed or high-priority places and another for ideas you may drop.
- Save the exact place listing rather than a generic search term so the address and map pin are clear.
- Use notes or labels, where available, for constraints such as “reservation at 7 p.m.” or “near the station.”
- Invite collaborators and agree that one person will remove duplicates and closed venues.
- Reorder the confirmed places by neighborhood or day only after checking opening hours and reservations elsewhere.
Google My Maps: a custom map and printable backup
Google My Maps is a map workflow rather than a booking timeline. Its official help documentation says named custom maps can be shared, exported and printed. That makes it useful when the visual relationship between hotels, attractions, parking and day-trip stops matters, or when you want a paper map in the car or a hotel room.
When to choose My Maps
Use it for a map-first trip: create layers for lodging, food, activities and transport, then print the result. It is especially useful for showing a whole region at once or marking locations that do not fit neatly into a standard saved list.
Important limitation
The documented evidence for My Maps establishes mapping, sharing, exporting and printing; it does not establish booking timelines or reservation management. Keep flight times, check-in windows and confirmation numbers in a dedicated itinerary or your booking records.
Create and print a practical map
- Create a named custom map for the trip.
- Add layers with clear names, such as “sleep,” “food,” “day 1” and “driving stops.”
- Add each location to the correct layer and edit the label so another traveler can understand it without your explanation.
- Share the map with the people who need to view or edit it; choose the least-permissive setting that works.
- Export or print the map from the available controls. Test the print scale and page boundaries before departure.
- Write the trip date and an emergency contact or hotel phone number on the paper copy, but do not rely on the map for live traffic or flight changes.
Roadtrippers: a specialist for driving routes and stops
Roadtrippers emphasizes route stops, recommendations and road-trip planning. It is the most purpose-built option in this group when the route itself is the trip: you need to shape a drive, discover stops along it and keep the sequence of those stops visible.

Plans, stop limits and price range
The official page reviewed on October 13, 2026 showed tiers from free to $59.99 per year and displayed different stop limits by tier. Those prices, limits and included features can change. Check the current plan table for the number of stops your route requires before subscribing; a plan that works for a two-day drive may not cover a multi-state loop.
When Roadtrippers beats a general itinerary tool
- The primary decision is which stops belong on a driving route.
- You want recommendations positioned along the route rather than a general city map.
- You need to compare route length and stop count before committing to an itinerary.
When to compare it with Wanderlog
Wanderlog also documents road-trip planning and route optimization, with some functions plan-dependent. Compare the current route limits, offline behavior and collaboration features in both products. Choose Roadtrippers when stop discovery and route shaping dominate; choose Wanderlog when the drive is one part of a larger trip with flights, lodging, budgets and group tasks.
Build a road-trip plan without overloading each day
- Enter the start and end points and add fixed reservations first.
- Add only stops that support the trip’s purpose; every stop consumes driving time, parking time and attention.
- Check the displayed stop limit for your current plan before adding optional points.
- Review the route in sequence and identify where an overnight stay is required rather than treating the map as a continuous drive.
- Export or copy the essential addresses and reservation details into a second record in case the route service is unavailable.
Paper planner and printed map: a deliberate offline layer
A travel planner notebook is a reasonable paper companion when you prefer handwriting or want a backup to a printed map. This is an inference from the documented print capability of Google My Maps, not a claim that a particular notebook has been tested or that it replaces digital synchronization.
What to put on paper
- Dates, lodging addresses and check-in or check-out windows.
- Flight, rail or rental confirmation numbers.
- Emergency contacts and the address of the next overnight stop.
- A short list of must-do activities and their reservation times.
- Space for changes, expenses or notes from the day.
Do not copy sensitive documents unnecessarily. Keep the paper backup limited to information that helps you continue the trip if your phone battery, account access or mobile data fails.

Reliability, privacy and handoff checklist
A polished itinerary is still a single point of failure if nobody can access it or knows which version is authoritative. Before leaving, run this short handoff:
- One owner: Name the person who resolves conflicting edits and booking changes.
- One confirmed record: Mark booked items differently from suggestions.
- Offline or paper access: Prepare the supported offline view or print the essential map and schedule.
- Time-zone check: Confirm that flight, rail and event times display in the local time intended by the provider.
- Contact backup: Keep lodging and transport phone numbers outside the app as well.
- Sharing review: Remove former collaborators and check whether names or profile pictures are visible.
- Change procedure: Decide how a canceled reservation, delayed flight or closed venue gets recorded and announced.
Recommended combinations
For a city break with friends
Use Wanderlog for the dated group itinerary and a Google Maps list for restaurants or attractions still under consideration. Once choices are confirmed, copy only the selected places into the relevant days so the final view stays readable.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →For a flight-heavy business trip
Use TripIt Pro as the chronological booking record and attach the documents you need during travel. A small Google Maps list can hold optional meals or meeting locations without turning the main itinerary into a research board.
For a national-park or regional road trip
Compare Roadtrippers and Wanderlog against the number of stops, collaborators and nights in the plan. Use the route specialist when stop discovery is central; use the broader hub when lodging, budgets and non-driving activities need equal weight. Print a My Maps overview for areas with uncertain coverage.
For travelers who prefer paper
Prepare a Google My Maps printout and a paper planner containing dates, addresses and confirmation numbers. Keep a digital copy with the person responsible for updates, but let the paper version carry the minimum information needed to continue the day.
