Bluesky is the strongest starting point if you want to choose topic-focused algorithmic feeds. Its feed marketplace lets you install feeds built by other people, and developers can create new ones. Mastodon is a better fit when you want to sort accounts you already follow into separate lists and tune your timeline and interface. Threads remains a viable option: it supports shareable custom feeds, temporary topic requests through Dear Algo, and a dedicated fediverse feed for eligible accounts.
There is no universal winner. The right choice depends on whether you want topic algorithms or followed-account lists, whether your changes should persist, how much setup you will do, and whether posts from other networks matter.
What “customizing your feed” means on each service
The phrase custom feed describes different controls rather than one standardized feature. Before switching apps, identify the kind of control you actually need:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Installable algorithmic feeds: A service or developer defines how posts are selected and ranked, and you choose among those feeds. This is Bluesky’s distinctive model.
- Followed-account lists: You manually group accounts you already follow into alternate timelines. Mastodon’s lists work this way.
- Shareable custom feeds: You make a feed inside the service and give other people a link or direct message. Threads supports this form of sharing.
- Temporary preference requests: You ask the service to increase or decrease a topic for a limited period. Threads’ Dear Algo feature is a three-day adjustment, not a permanent algorithm you own.
- Cross-network timelines: You view posts from connected services in a separate feed. Threads’ fediverse feed depends on federation and sharing settings.
These differences matter more than a simple “best alternative” ranking. An algorithmic topic feed can show posts from accounts you do not follow, while a list cannot. A list gives you direct control over membership, but you must maintain it. A temporary request can be convenient for a live event, yet it may disappear after the stated period.

Quick comparison
| Question | Bluesky | Mastodon | Threads |
|---|---|---|---|
| Primary customization model | Installable algorithmic feeds organized around topics, communities, post types or a local social graph. | Lists that place accounts you already follow into alternative feeds. | Custom feeds that can be made public and shared, plus topic requests and a fediverse feed. |
| Can you use feeds made by others? | Yes. Bluesky says users can swap default feeds for feeds created by others. | You can use lists created and maintained by you; the documented feature is not a network-wide marketplace of independent algorithms. | Yes, when another user shares a public custom feed with you. |
| Can you create your own? | Yes, but building a feed requires developer familiarity. | Yes, by organizing followed accounts into lists and changing available preferences. | Yes, through custom feeds; the exact creation controls can vary by account and app version. |
| Persistent or temporary? | Selected feeds remain part of your feed choices until you change them. | Lists and interface preferences are ongoing until you edit them. | Custom feeds can be persistent, while Dear Algo requests last three days according to Meta’s February 11, 2026 announcement. |
| Layout and preference controls | The evidence here centers on feed selection and creation rather than an equivalent multi-column control set. | Advanced web supports multiple pinned columns, sensitive-media and content-warning controls, notification filtering, and language filters for public timelines. | Controls include shareable feeds, Dear Algo requests and a fediverse feed when eligible; availability can depend on settings and geography. |
| Cross-network content | Not established as a general fediverse timeline in the cited product material. | Mastodon is itself a federated network, but server and client behavior can vary. | Fediverse posts from people you follow can appear in a dedicated reverse-chronological feed when sharing is enabled. |
| Useful scale figure | Bluesky’s company FAQ reported more than 40,000 algorithmic feeds and more than 44 million users as of May 2026; both figures are platform-published and can change. | Mastodon’s July 2025 release post said it ran on more than 8,000 independent servers; this is a changing snapshot, not a quality score. | No comparable platform-wide scale figure is needed to decide which customization model fits you. |
The table describes documented capabilities, not a controlled performance test. None of these figures establishes which service has the best audience, moderation outcome, privacy posture or user satisfaction for a particular person.
Bluesky: the clearest choice for topic-based algorithmic feeds
Bluesky is the most direct alternative when your main question is, “What is an alternative to Threads with custom feeds?” Its model treats feeds as selectable products rather than one opaque ranking system. Bluesky’s explanation says anyone can build a feed, and users can replace default feeds with feeds created by other people. A feed can organize posts around a topic or community, emphasize posts instead of replies, or prioritize a local social graph.
Bluesky’s company FAQ reported more than 40,000 algorithmic feeds, with the figure accessed October 13, 2026. That is a live, platform-published count, not an independent audit or a guarantee that every feed is active, accurate or well moderated. It does show the breadth of the catalog available to explore. The same FAQ reported more than 44 million users as of May 2026; that number indicates stated scale, not comparative activity or satisfaction.
How to choose a Bluesky feed
- Open the feed-selection area in the Bluesky app or web client. Look for the place where available feeds are listed rather than relying only on the default home timeline.
- Browse by description. Read whether a feed focuses on a subject, community, post type, replies or a local social graph. The selection rule is more important than the name.
- Install or pin feeds that match your use case. Keep a small set at first so you can tell which feeds are useful instead of creating a cluttered selector.
- Switch between feeds deliberately. Use a broad timeline for general reading and a narrow topic feed when you want concentrated discovery.
- Remove feeds that become noisy or stale. A feed’s inclusion rules can change, and your interests can change; treat the catalog as something you curate over time.
The exact labels and placement can change between Bluesky clients and releases. The durable concept is that you select feeds from a catalog instead of accepting one ranking system.
Building a Bluesky feed yourself
Bluesky distinguishes using feeds from creating them. Selecting an existing feed is intended to be straightforward; creating one requires some developer familiarity. You may need to understand how posts are collected, filtered and ranked, then operate the service that delivers those results. That makes “build your own algorithm” a realistic promise only for technically confident readers or teams with development support.

A practical progression is to install feeds first, inspect what their descriptions and results emphasize, and only then decide whether writing a feed is worth the maintenance. If you create one, document its inclusion and exclusion rules so users know why a post appears. Plan for moderation, spam handling and changes to the platform’s APIs or protocols; a feed is software, not a static list.
Where Bluesky’s model fits—and where it does not
- Strong fit: You want discovery beyond accounts you already follow, separate timelines for subjects, or the ability to try many ranking approaches without waiting for a single platform algorithm to change.
- Trade-off: You are choosing someone else’s rules unless you build the feed yourself. Two feeds with the same topic label may produce very different results.
- Not established by the available evidence: A universal advantage in moderation, privacy, audience quality or satisfaction. The feed count cannot prove those outcomes.
Mastodon: hands-on organization for accounts you already follow
Mastodon suits readers who think of feed customization as filing people into useful views. Its lists let you organize followed accounts into arbitrary alternative feeds, helping declutter the home timeline without unfollowing anyone. Mastodon’s July 8, 2025 release notes described streamlined list management.
This is a different proposition from Bluesky’s independent algorithm marketplace. A Mastodon list is primarily about who you follow and place in a group. It does not automatically discover posts from an entire topic network according to a third-party ranking rule. If your desired feed is “the accounts I follow who post about local politics,” lists can be a precise solution. If it is “the best posts about local politics whether or not I follow the author,” an algorithmic feed is closer to what you want.
Set up a Mastodon list
- Choose the accounts you want to organize. Start with a concrete purpose such as news, colleagues, hobbies or a time-zone-specific group.
- Create a list from Mastodon’s list-management area. Give it a name that describes the reading task, not merely the date you made it.
- Add followed accounts to the list. Lists are based on accounts you follow, so follow a person before expecting to place them in a list.
- Open the list as its own timeline. Use it when you want a narrower view without changing your home feed.
- Review membership periodically. Remove accounts that no longer fit and add new follows as your interests change.
List behavior and available controls can vary by server and client version. If a button is missing, check whether you are using a different web interface or an app maintained by your server.
Use Mastodon’s advanced web controls
Mastodon’s official preference documentation describes an advanced web interface with multiple pinned columns. This layout can put your home feed, a list, notifications and other timelines beside one another, which is useful for monitoring several groups without repeatedly navigating away.

The same documentation describes controls for sensitive media and content warnings, notification filtering, and language filters for public timelines. Language detection can be imprecise, so treat a language filter as a convenience rather than a perfect boundary. Posts may be mislabeled, and multilingual accounts may not behave exactly as expected.
Understand the server dimension
Mastodon runs across independent servers. A July 2025 Mastodon release post said the network operated on more than 8,000 independent servers. That figure is a changing snapshot and does not tell you which server is appropriate, how active it is or what its moderation policy is.
Your server can affect onboarding, local timelines, moderation rules, storage policies and the client features available to you. Read a server’s rules and moderation information before investing time in lists. The existence of thousands of servers is a structural feature, not proof that Mastodon is better for every reader.
Threads: useful controls if you want to stay on Threads
Threads should not be characterized as having no customization. Its documented options cover three different needs: shareable custom feeds, short-lived topic adjustments and a fediverse feed for eligible accounts.
Share a custom Threads feed
Threads users can make a custom feed public and share it through a link or direct message. This is useful when a group wants the same curated view, such as a conference, sports season or professional topic. Because the feed is shareable, its value depends on the quality of its creator and on whether the recipients want to use Threads’ interface.

Look for the in-app control that changes a custom feed’s visibility to public, then use the share action to send its link or direct message. Labels can change as the app is updated, so confirm that the feed is public before expecting another person to open it.
Use Dear Algo for a temporary topic adjustment
Meta announced Dear Algo on February 11, 2026. A user posts a public request beginning with “Dear Algo” to ask for more or less of a topic. Meta says the adjustment lasts three days. At the time of the announcement, the feature was available in the United States, New Zealand, Australia and the United Kingdom.
This is a useful tool for a temporary change—for example, following a developing event without permanently retraining your feed. It is not evidence that you can create and own a permanent custom algorithm. Availability may change by country, account or app version, so check whether the feature appears in your composer and feed controls.
View fediverse posts in Threads
Users who enable fediverse sharing can see posts from federated users they follow in a dedicated feed shown in reverse chronological order. Meta’s announcement names Mastodon and other connected services. The feature depends on federation and sharing settings; it does not mean every Threads account automatically sees every Mastodon post.

To use it, enable the relevant fediverse-sharing option, follow eligible federated accounts, and open the dedicated feed when you want that reverse-chronological view. If the feed is absent, check account eligibility and sharing settings rather than assuming the service is down.

Choose by the control you actually need
Choose Bluesky when discovery matters most
Pick Bluesky if your ideal feed is organized around subjects, communities or ranking rules and you want to install several alternatives. It is also the best-supported option for readers who want to browse a large catalog before deciding what to follow. The platform’s more-than-40,000 figure is its own changing count, so use it as an indication of catalog size rather than a promise of quality.
Choose Mastodon when your follow graph is the asset
Pick Mastodon if you already know which people you want to read and need separate views for them. Lists, pinned columns and notification or content preferences give you hands-on control. Expect to spend time maintaining list membership and understanding the server and client you use.
Stay with Threads when convenience and sharing win
Stay with Threads if your network is already there and you need lightweight customization rather than a complete change of platform. Public custom feeds can be shared, Dear Algo can adjust a topic for three days where available, and the fediverse feed can bring in eligible connected posts. These controls are useful, but they do not all provide the same persistence or scope.
A decision checklist before you switch
- Source: Do you want posts from accounts you follow, or topic posts selected by an algorithm?
- Persistence: Should the change last indefinitely, or only for a short event?
- Maintenance: Will you edit a list regularly, or would you rather install feeds made by others?
- Creation: Do you need to build ranking logic yourself, or only choose among existing options?
- Layout: Are multiple columns, notification filters or language controls essential?
- Network reach: Do you need posts from federated services, and are you willing to enable the required sharing settings?
- Evidence: Are you choosing based on a documented feature, or assuming that a larger user or feed count means a better experience?
Answering those questions usually produces a clearer result than asking which app is “best.” The services expose different kinds of control, so a winner in one category can be the wrong choice in another.
Migration and setup plan
- Write down your current reading jobs. Separate broad discovery, close friends, professional monitoring, news, hobbies and event coverage. Each job may deserve a different feed or list.
- Classify each job by source. Mark it as topic discovery, followed-account reading, temporary coverage or cross-network reading.
- Start with the least disruptive experiment. On Threads, try a public custom feed or Dear Algo where available. On Mastodon, create one list. On Bluesky, install two or three feeds rather than attempting to replace everything at once.
- Evaluate signal, not volume. Check whether the view reduces irrelevant posts, surfaces the people or subjects you need, and remains understandable when a major event changes posting patterns.
- Document what worked. Record feed names, list purposes and any server or sharing settings so you can recreate the setup after changing clients or devices.
- Remove unsuccessful experiments. A feed that creates noise is not valuable merely because it is popular or technically sophisticated.
Limitations to keep in mind
Official product pages explain what each platform says its features do; they are not independent head-to-head tests. The available evidence does not establish comparative privacy, moderation quality, audience value or user satisfaction. Platform counts are also moving targets: Bluesky’s feed and user figures, and Mastodon’s server figure, should be read with their stated dates and attribution.
Feature availability can change quickly. Dear Algo’s initial geography was limited to four countries, fediverse visibility depends on settings, Mastodon behavior can vary by server and client, and Bluesky’s catalog can gain or lose feeds. Recheck the current in-app labels before treating any instruction as permanent.
Bottom line
For topic-oriented algorithmic choice, start with Bluesky. For careful organization of people you already follow, choose Mastodon. For users who want to remain on Threads, its public custom feeds, three-day Dear Algo requests and optional fediverse feed provide meaningful—but different—ways to adjust what appears. Match the service to the kind of control you want rather than treating “custom feed” as a single feature.
