If you want PC games on a living-room TV, the best Steam Machine alternative depends on where the games are rendered. Choose a compact gaming PC with strong graphics for a fixed local setup, a handheld PC and dock when you also want portable play, or a modest mini PC with cloud gaming when low hardware cost matters more than offline access. These are different solutions, not interchangeable boxes.
Which Steam Machine alternative fits your living room?
Start with your most important constraint: local performance, portability, simplicity, or hardware cost. A product described as a “mini PC” may be excellent for streaming and simple games but unsuitable for demanding local releases. Conversely, a powerful compact desktop can replace a conventional tower beside the TV, but it will not become portable. A handheld can do both jobs, although its dock, operating system, storage and controller setup add variables.
| Alternative | Best for | What does the gaming work? | Main compromises |
|---|---|---|---|
| Compact gaming PC or powerful mini PC | A permanent living-room computer and local PC-game rendering | The PC’s processor and graphics hardware | Higher cost and heat than a basic mini PC; little or no portability |
| Handheld gaming PC with a TV dock | One machine for handheld and occasional TV play | The handheld’s integrated processor and graphics | Dock compatibility, battery management, display scaling and handheld-class performance |
| Lower-powered mini PC plus cloud gaming | Streaming supported games while keeping local hardware small | Remote servers operated by the cloud service | Requires a suitable connection, service access and a supported game library |
| Small-form-factor custom PC | Readers who want configurable parts and future upgrades | A separately selected desktop CPU and graphics card | More planning, assembly and cooling work; no tested parts list is established here |
For a fixed TV installation, buy according to the graphics capability of the exact configuration rather than the words “gaming” or “mini PC” on the box. For a device that moves between rooms, begin with handheld video-output support and dock compatibility. For cloud play, select the service and supported games before choosing the client computer.

Compact gaming PCs: the closest replacement for a traditional Steam Machine
A compact gaming PC is the most direct alternative when you want games rendered locally on a television. Connect it to the TV by HDMI or DisplayPort-to-HDMI, pair a controller, and use Windows or another supported desktop operating system as you would on a larger PC. The experience is closest to a console when the computer starts reliably, the controller is always paired and the desktop is hidden behind a suitable launcher.

When a compact PC is the right choice
- You expect to play demanding games locally rather than stream them.
- The computer will remain in one room.
- You want ordinary desktop flexibility, multiple storefronts and the ability to attach peripherals.
- You can provide airflow around the enclosure and accept fan noise under load.
Graphics capability matters more than the enclosure
Windows Central’s mini-PC guide separates simple systems, which are better suited to simpler games or cloud play, from compact systems with stronger graphics for local gaming. That distinction is more useful than the mini-PC label itself. Check the exact processor, graphics solution, memory configuration, storage and cooling design. Two systems sold under a similar family name can have very different game capability when their graphics hardware differs.
The same guide identifies the HP Z2 Mini (G1a) and ASUS ROG NUC (2025) as examples of compact PCs with powerful graphics for local AAA gaming. Those are editorial examples, not controlled benchmark results from this article, and the available component configurations can change. Confirm the specification and regional model before buying.
What to inspect before purchase
- Graphics hardware: establish whether the machine uses a dedicated GPU or relies on integrated graphics. Do not infer performance from the case size.
- Cooling: look for unobstructed intake and exhaust paths. A tiny enclosure can run its fans loudly when rendering a demanding game.
- TV output: verify that the available HDMI or DisplayPort connection supports your television’s resolution and refresh mode.
- Memory and storage: check whether RAM and the SSD are replaceable. Large PC games can quickly consume a small drive.
- Ports: count USB ports for a controller receiver, keyboard, mouse and external storage, and check wired networking if your wireless signal is weak.
- Power supply: make sure the external adapter fits the intended location and has adequate ventilation.
Living-room setup procedure
- Place the PC where its vents are not blocked by a cabinet wall, carpet or other equipment.
- Connect the PC to the TV, then select the matching HDMI input.
- Complete operating-system updates and install the game stores or launchers you actually use.
- In the display settings, select the television’s native resolution and a refresh rate that both devices support.
- Pair a wireless controller or connect one by USB. Keep a keyboard and mouse available for account sign-in and troubleshooting.
- Turn on the TV’s game mode if it offers one, and disable unnecessary image processing that adds delay.
- Install one representative game and check frame-rate stability, fan noise and temperatures before filling the drive.
A compact desktop is usually the strongest choice when “living-room PC” means a permanent local gaming station. It is not automatically the cheapest or quietest option, and this evidence does not establish a current price or benchmark ranking among specific models.
Handheld gaming PCs connected to a TV
A handheld gaming PC gives you a second use case that a fixed mini PC cannot: pick it up and play away from the television. When the handheld supports video output, a docking station can provide HDMI, USB and power connections for a living-room setup. Windows Central describes this approach for handheld comparisons including the Legion Go 2 and names the JSAUX 6-in-1 Docking Station as an example. Treat that as an example of the dock category, not a universal compatibility guarantee.

Check video output before buying a dock
USB-C does not by itself prove that a handheld can send a picture to a TV. Confirm that the exact model supports the required video-output standard, and then check that the dock accepts the handheld’s connector, supplies the expected charging power and offers the ports you need. A dock designed for one handheld may fit another physically while failing to provide video, power or stable USB operation.
- Find the manufacturer’s specifications for the exact handheld model and verify external-display support.
- Choose a dock with the required video connector, power input and controller or storage ports.
- Connect the dock’s power adapter first, then connect the dock to the TV and the handheld.
- Select the dock’s HDMI input on the TV and wait for the handheld to detect the display.
- Pair a Bluetooth controller or connect one to the dock. Keep the handheld’s own controls available for menus.
- Set a TV-friendly resolution and frame-rate target. A handheld may need lower settings than it uses on its built-in screen.
- Test sleep, wake, charging and controller reconnection before treating the setup as a console replacement.
Windows and SteamOS are different trade-offs
The operating system affects the launcher experience, driver behavior and game compatibility. The ROG Ally family uses Windows models, while SteamOS handhelds present a different interface and compatibility profile. Neither operating system should be described as universally superior: compatibility depends on the game, anti-cheat system, launcher and current software support. A Windows handheld may offer broad desktop-launcher access, while a SteamOS device may provide a more console-like interface for compatible games.
Handheld examples and listed specifications
Pocket Tactics’ guide, updated September 25, 2026, lists the ROG Ally with Windows 11, Ryzen Z1 or Z1 Extreme variants, a 7-inch 1,920 × 1,080 120 Hz IPS display, 16 GB of memory, a 512 GB SSD, a 40 Wh battery and a weight of 608 g. These are guide-listed figures for particular configurations; verify the exact SKU and region. They describe the handheld itself, not performance when docked to a television.
ASUS Republic of Gamers lists the ROG XBOX Ally X20 (2026) with Windows 11, a 7.4-inch 1,080p 120 Hz OLED display and an AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor. Those are manufacturer-listed specifications, not independently tested battery life or frame-rate results. The larger OLED screen matters during portable play, but it does not remove the need to check TV-output and dock behavior.

Where a docked handheld works best
- Use it for shorter TV sessions and portable play rather than assuming it will match a desktop GPU in every new AAA game.
- Keep the charger connected during TV play; rendering at a higher external resolution can increase power draw.
- Use a wired network connection through the dock when downloads or online latency are problematic.
- Plan storage carefully. A 512 GB SSD can hold several large games, but a modern library can fill it quickly.
Mini PC plus cloud gaming
Cloud gaming changes the hardware requirement. The mini PC decodes a video stream and sends controller input; remote hardware renders the game. Windows Central distinguishes this use from local AAA rendering on compact PCs. A lower-powered, quieter mini PC can therefore make sense if every important game is supported by the service you choose and your network is consistently good.
Choose the service before the computer
Cloud catalogs, subscription rules, supported storefronts and regional availability change. Confirm that the service supports the games you intend to play, whether you must own those games separately, and whether the relevant app or browser works on the operating system you plan to use. Do not assume that a game available for local PC installation is automatically streamable.
Network requirements that affect play
- Use wired Ethernet where practical, especially when the TV and router are close enough for a cable.
- If using Wi-Fi, prefer a strong, uncongested connection and keep the mini PC away from sources of interference.
- Latency matters as much as download speed. A fast connection with an unstable route can still feel delayed.
- Pause large downloads and other high-bandwidth activity while playing.
- Use the service’s quality controls to reduce stream resolution when the picture is breaking up or controls feel late.
Cloud-gaming setup
- Check the service’s current game list, region and account requirements.
- Install the supported application or open the service’s supported browser on the mini PC.
- Connect the mini PC to the TV and set the display to a mode the stream supports.
- Pair a controller and test input response in a non-competitive game.
- Run a short session at the intended picture quality before committing to a subscription.
- If the stream stutters, test Ethernet, reduce stream quality and check whether another device is saturating the connection.
This route is attractive when local graphics power would be wasted, but it depends on a service and network that are outside your direct control. The specific game and service must be checked at the time you subscribe.
Small-form-factor custom gaming PCs
A custom small-form-factor build can deliver a configurable desktop in a compact case. It is useful when you care about selecting the graphics card, memory and storage yourself or want an upgrade path unavailable in a sealed mini PC. The trade-off is complexity: component dimensions, power delivery, cooling and firmware compatibility all become your responsibility.

Plan the build around the graphics card
- Measure the maximum graphics-card length, height and thickness the case accepts.
- Check power-supply format and wattage before selecting the GPU.
- Reserve room for CPU cooling and ensure the intake and exhaust fans have clear paths.
- Account for the motherboard’s external video outputs and the TV’s input capabilities.
- Budget for the operating system, storage, controller and any wireless adapter in addition to core components.
No tested parts list or current bill of materials is established for this article, so treat a custom build as a category decision rather than a ready-made recipe. Research the exact case, graphics card and cooling combination separately before ordering.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to decide between the three main paths
Choose a compact gaming PC when local performance is the priority
Pick this path if the machine will stay beside the TV, you want to install games from multiple PC stores, and you prefer not to depend on a streaming service. Spend attention on graphics hardware and cooling rather than cosmetic size.
Choose a docked handheld when portability has real value
Pick this path if you will genuinely play away from the TV. The dock is an accessory in the system, not an afterthought: verify video output, charging and port compatibility for the exact handheld. Accept that handheld power limits can make settings and frame-rate targets different from those of a larger desktop.
Choose cloud gaming when you want the smallest local computer
Pick this path if your preferred games are supported, your network is stable and you value low local heat and noise over offline ownership. Confirm the service’s current catalog and regional terms first.

Choose a custom small-form-factor PC when you can manage the engineering
Pick this path if upgradeability and component choice justify assembly work. It can occupy the same living-room role as a compact prebuilt, but the final size, noise and reliability depend on the parts combination.
Controller, audio and TV considerations
A successful living-room PC is more than the computer. Use a controller with a stable Bluetooth connection or a reliable USB receiver, and keep a keyboard and mouse nearby for setup and account recovery. Route audio through the TV, an AV receiver or a headset, then select the intended output device in the operating system and game. If the television applies heavy motion processing, enable its low-latency or game mode. For a handheld dock, test whether the controller reconnects after sleep; this is a common point of friction even when video output works.
Common failure modes and fixes
The TV shows no picture
- Confirm the TV is on the correct input and reseat both ends of the HDMI cable.
- Test the computer or handheld directly with a known-good display to isolate the dock.
- Verify that the handheld model supports external video and that the dock is receiving power.
- Lower the output resolution or refresh rate if the TV and device disagree about a mode.
Games run poorly on a “gaming” mini PC
- Check the exact graphics hardware rather than the product family name.
- Install current graphics drivers and close background applications.
- Reduce resolution, texture quality and other GPU-heavy settings.
- Inspect airflow and fan behavior; thermal limits can reduce sustained performance.
Cloud play stutters or feels delayed
- Switch from congested Wi-Fi to Ethernet where possible.
- Stop downloads and video streams on the same network.
- Reduce stream quality and test at another time to distinguish local congestion from service conditions.
- Check whether the service supports the game and region you are using.
The controller works in the desktop but not the game
- Connect the controller before launching the game.
- Check the launcher’s controller configuration and the game’s input settings.
- Remove duplicate Bluetooth pairings or competing USB receivers.
- For a docked handheld, test the controller directly on the handheld to identify dock-related USB problems.
What the named products do—and do not—prove
The HP Z2 Mini (G1a) and ASUS ROG NUC (2025) demonstrate that compact computers can be marketed for strong local graphics, but the cited guide does not provide a controlled comparison or current price table. Pimax Spation, reported by PC Gamer on October 8, 2026 as a smaller PC intended for high-end PC VR, illustrates another compact-PC direction. Its VR focus does not make it automatically the best value or fit for ordinary TV gaming.
