The Samsung HW-Q990H is the clearest alternative if you want a complete Dolby Atmos surround system in one purchase. It is listed as an 11.1.4-channel package with rear speakers included. For a single-bar setup with broader format and gaming connections, consider the Sony BRAVIA Theater Bar 9; for an all-in-one design with optional rear speakers, consider the Samsung HW-QS90H. These are different system configurations, not a proven ranking of sound quality against the Arc Ultra.

What matters more than channel count?
What comes in the box
The Arc Ultra is a standalone bar that can be expanded with compatible speakers. The Q990H, by contrast, is listed as a full-surround package with rear speakers included. Those bundles are not like-for-like: account for the extra speakers and subwoofer when comparing the price of a complete setup with that of a bar alone. RTINGS describes the 2025 Q990F as an 11.1.4 package with rear satellites and a separate subwoofer, compared with the standalone Arc Ultra’s 5.1.2 configuration.

Included rear speakers are useful only if you have a practical place to position them and can run or manage their power connections. If you would rather keep the system to one main unit, the QS90H’s all-in-one design is the more relevant configuration to investigate. Channel labels describe a system’s layout; they are not, by themselves, a measurement of how good it sounds in your room.

Sources, formats, and TV compatibility
The Bar 9 supports Dolby Atmos and DTS:X and includes an HDMI 2.1 input supporting 4K/120Hz, variable refresh rate (VRR), and auto low latency mode (ALLM). What Hi-Fi? notes that the Arc Ultra does not support DTS:X and has no dedicated HDMI input, so external sources connect through the TV’s eARC path. If you are considering the Q990F, Samsung says its wireless Atmos connection works over Wi-Fi with Samsung displays from 2022–2025 and requires a Dolby Atmos source. Check the exact television generation and regional model before relying on that feature.
Whether you plan to expand later
The Arc Ultra works within the Sonos system and can be expanded with compatible speakers. That can suit someone who wants to start with a bar and add components later. If your priority is having rear speakers from day one, compare the full Q990H bundle instead; if you want an all-in-one starting point, look at the QS90H and verify which optional speakers are available for your market.

Why choose the Samsung HW-Q990H?
Choose the Q990H when you want rear speakers included rather than building a system from a standalone bar. Samsung UK lists it as 11.1.4-channel full surround with Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, and Crutchfield’s June 22, 2026 guide calls it its “Most immersive” pick. That editorial label is a recommendation, not a controlled sound-quality comparison with the Arc Ultra.

When the Sony BRAVIA Theater Bar 9 makes more sense
Consider the Bar 9 if you want a single-bar alternative with both Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, Sony’s 360 Spatial Sound Mapping, or an HDMI 2.1 input for a connected gaming source. What Hi-Fi? reports 13 individual drivers and the listed HDMI 2.1 features. Crutchfield named it its “Best 3D sound” option in its June 2026 guide. Check the exact local bundle before budgeting for any subwoofer or rear speakers; the cited comparison does not establish one universal bundle or price.
When to consider the Samsung HW-QS90H
The QS90H is for buyers drawn to an all-in-one 7.1.2-channel Dolby Atmos system rather than a package built around separate rear speakers. Samsung UK lists rear speakers as optional. The available sources do not establish a direct listening comparison with the Arc Ultra, so treat it as a form-factor and expansion choice, not a demonstrated sound-quality upgrade.

Is the Samsung HW-Q990F still worth considering?
The Q990F is a prior 2025 model, not a substitute for checking which model is current in your region. It may be worth comparing if local stock is available at a favorable price and you want an included subwoofer and rear speakers. RTINGS’ direct comparison says the Q990F is a better all-in-one solution than the standalone Arc Ultra on the basis of its included rear satellites and external subwoofer; RTINGS also notes its HDMI-in support can help reduce A/V desynchronization during gaming. How to make the decision
- Decide whether you want rear speakers now. If yes, start with the Q990H bundle; if no, compare the Bar 9 and QS90H according to your preferred form factor.
- Check your connections and sources. For DTS:X or HDMI 2.1 passthrough, the Bar 9 has specifically listed support. For wireless Atmos on the Q990F, verify Samsung TV generation and Atmos-source compatibility.
- Compare complete local bundles. Check model suffixes, included components, and optional speaker availability before comparing prices.
- Choose expansion versus an all-in-one purchase. The Arc Ultra offers a Sonos expansion path; the Q990H is listed with rear speakers in the package, while the QS90H is an all-in-one design with optional rears.
