For most Apple TV owners who want real buttons, the One For All URC 1110 is the strongest direct replacement: it controls Apple TV, a television and audio equipment, adds a motion-activated backlight, and retains Siri voice control. Choose Function101 if you want a simple, button-first Apple TV layout and can live without Siri. For a multi-device home theater, SofaBaton is the better fit; BroadLink RM4 Pro is aimed at phone-based control; and Sideclick adds TV and audio buttons while you keep your existing Siri Remote.

Apple TV 4K does not require Apple’s own remote. Apple documents support for compatible TV or receiver remotes over HDMI-CEC, network-based home-control remotes, and infrared (IR) universal remotes. That means you can replace the touch-heavy controller, consolidate several remotes, or simply add the missing volume and input buttons.

Which Siri Remote alternative should you buy?

Start with the problem you are trying to solve rather than with a brand name. The table below maps the principal options to the control style each one is designed for.

What Apple TV officially supports

Apple’s support documentation says: “You can use a supported TV or receiver remote, a network-based remote for home-control systems, or an infrared remote (commonly known as a universal remote) to control Apple TV 4K.” In practical terms, there are three routes.

HDMI-CEC through your television or receiver

HDMI-CEC lets compatible equipment send navigation and power commands over HDMI. If your TV or receiver supports CEC and it is enabled, its remote may operate Apple TV without infrared learning. CEC names differ by manufacturer, so look for the CEC setting in the TV or receiver’s HDMI or external-device menu. CEC behavior is also equipment-dependent: some systems pass navigation and power reliably but do not expose every Apple TV function.

Network-based home-control remotes

Apple says network remotes can be added through the Home app. This approach suits an installed home-control system or a phone/tablet-based controller that reaches Apple TV over the network. It avoids line-of-sight requirements, but setup depends on the controller and your home network.

Infrared universal remotes

Apple TV can learn commands from an IR remote. On Apple TV, open Settings > Remotes and Devices > Learn Remote, then follow the on-screen prompts. Keep the two remotes pointed at Apple TV as requested and press the corresponding buttons on the teaching remote. IR requires a clear path to the Apple TV’s receiver; a cabinet door or poor aiming can make an apparently successful setup unreliable.

One For All URC 1110: best direct replacement with Siri

The URC 1110 is the clearest answer when you want a physical remote that feels like a normal TV controller but still provides Apple TV’s voice feature. One For All lists support for three devices—TV, Apple TV and audio—and states 100% compatibility with Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K. It includes Siri voice control and a motion-activated backlight, so buttons illuminate when you pick it up.

Why it stands out

  • A dedicated tactile layout replaces the Siri Remote’s touch-first interaction.
  • Siri voice control is retained rather than sacrificed for buttons.
  • TV and audio commands are available from the same handset.
  • The backlight helps in a dark viewing room without requiring a separate light.

Who should choose it

Choose the URC 1110 if one remote must cover Apple TV, television and sound equipment and you do not want to give up voice search. It is less compelling if your priority is a large number of devices, custom activities or smart-home scenes; those are the jobs for a hub-based universal system.

Function101 Button Remote: the tactile Apple TV specialist

Function101 is aimed at the reader who mainly wants Apple TV buttons in a familiar arrangement. Independent comparisons describe a directional pad, dedicated playback keys and volume control. That layout is easier to use by touch for people who dislike swiping on the Siri Remote or who want clear play, pause, forward and back controls.

The trade-off

Function101 does not replace Siri voice control. You must use button navigation and on-screen search, or keep another Apple device available for voice input. It is therefore a focused accessibility and ergonomics choice rather than an all-in-one voice remote.

When it is the right fit

  • You operate one Apple TV and want a straightforward directional pad.
  • Multiple household members find a touch surface difficult to use consistently.
  • You prefer dedicated transport and volume keys over gesture controls.

Price, inventory and retailer availability change frequently; check the current listing and included accessories before purchase.

SofaBaton: best for a larger home-theater system

SofaBaton’s X2, X1S and U3 models are grouped around the problem of controlling several devices as activities. They are suited to setups containing Apple TV, a television, soundbar, receiver and other compatible equipment. Instead of picking up a separate controller for each component, you configure a single activity such as watching Apple TV or listening through the receiver.

X2 and X1S hub approach

The X2 is positioned as the premium hub option and the X1S as a lower-cost hub option. A hub can keep equipment hidden in a cabinet and coordinate commands across devices, but it introduces more setup: you must add devices, assign them to activities and ensure the hub can reach the equipment.

U3 handheld approach

The U3 is the button-style universal remote in this group. The comparison describes IR, Bluetooth and RF learning. It can consolidate compatible equipment, but it does not replace Apple TV Siri voice control. Choose it when tactile control and broad device coverage matter more than voice search.

What to check before choosing SofaBaton

  • Whether every device in your system is supported by the model you are considering.
  • Whether your cabinet and equipment placement require a hub rather than direct IR.
  • Whether you are comfortable configuring activities instead of using a simple Apple TV-only remote.

BroadLink RM4 Pro: app-first control instead of another handheld

BroadLink RM4 Pro is a hub for controlling IR and Wi-Fi devices from an app and for building phone-based scenes. It suits someone who already wants smart-home routines—for example, turning on the television, selecting an input and starting a viewing setup from one app.

The cited comparison notes that RM4 Pro lacks Bluetooth. That limitation matters if a target device requires Bluetooth commands rather than IR or Wi-Fi. It also means this is not a like-for-like replacement for the Siri Remote: your phone becomes the interface, and you give up the immediacy of a dedicated handheld unless you keep another remote nearby.

Sideclick: add buttons and keep Siri

Sideclick is an attachment that clips to a compatible Siri Remote. It adds IR buttons for television and audio functions while leaving the original touch surface and Siri microphone available. This is the best answer when your Apple TV navigation already works for you but you repeatedly reach for a second remote to change volume, mute or power.

Advantages

  • You retain Siri voice control and the Apple touch interface.
  • TV and audio buttons are physically attached to the controller you already use.
  • There is no need to retrain the household on a wholly different Apple TV remote.

Limitations

Sideclick does not replace the Siri Remote; it depends on a compatible original remote and adds another layer around it. It is also limited to the IR functions its buttons can learn, so it is not a substitute for a full multi-device activity hub.

How to set up a universal or learned IR remote

  1. Confirm the control path. Decide whether the remote will use HDMI-CEC, network control or IR. If you are using IR, place Apple TV where its receiver has a clear line of sight.
  2. Prepare the remote. Install its batteries or charge it, select the Apple TV device mode if it has one, and have the TV or audio codes or learning function ready.
  3. Open Apple TV’s learning screen. Go to Settings > Remotes and Devices > Learn Remote.
  4. Teach the basic navigation controls. Follow the prompts for directional movement, selection, menu/back and playback. Press each button deliberately and wait for Apple TV to confirm it.
  5. Teach only the commands you need. Add volume, mute, power or input if the remote is intended to replace your TV controller. Avoid assigning duplicate buttons that could make troubleshooting harder.
  6. Test from your normal seat. Check navigation, playback, volume, power and wake behavior with the room lights off and any cabinet doors in their normal position.

If a command is missed, repeat that button during the learning prompt rather than starting the whole process. If commands work only when aimed precisely, improve the line of sight or move the Apple TV; learning a code does not overcome an obstructed IR path.

How to use HDMI-CEC instead of IR

  1. Enable CEC on the TV or receiver. The setting may use a manufacturer-specific name and is usually under HDMI, external inputs or device-control options.
  2. Connect Apple TV through the CEC-capable HDMI path. A receiver in the middle must also support and pass CEC if Apple TV is connected through it.
  3. Power-cycle the chain. Turn off the TV, receiver and Apple TV, then power them back on so the devices renegotiate HDMI control.
  4. Test navigation and power. If basic commands work but a particular function does not, the limitation is likely the TV or receiver’s CEC implementation rather than Apple TV’s learned-remote settings.

Common problems and fixes

The remote controls the TV but not Apple TV

Check whether you configured HDMI-CEC, network control or IR. A TV remote may control Apple TV only when CEC is enabled and the HDMI path supports it. For IR, repeat the Apple TV learning procedure and verify that the remote is in the correct device mode.

Volume works, but navigation does not

Volume may be handled by the television or receiver while Apple TV navigation still needs learned commands. Return to Settings > Remotes and Devices > Learn Remote and teach directional, select and menu/back buttons separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The remote works intermittently

IR needs line of sight. Remove obstructions, avoid aiming through closed cabinet doors and test with the remote pointed directly at Apple TV. For a hub, check that the hub’s IR emitters face the equipment and that the network connection is stable.

You need Siri after switching to a button remote

Function101 and SofaBaton do not replace Apple TV Siri voice control. Keep the Siri Remote for voice searches, choose the URC 1110 if Siri must be on the replacement, or use Sideclick to add buttons without discarding the original remote.

Several remotes create conflicting power behavior

Decide which device owns power control—TV, receiver or Apple TV—and disable or unassign duplicate power commands where the remote software allows it. Test one activity at a time so you can identify whether a wrong input or a second power toggle is causing the failure.

Final buying checklist

  • Do you need Siri voice search, or are tactile buttons more important?
  • Is Apple TV the only device, or must the remote operate a TV, soundbar, receiver and other equipment?
  • Will you use HDMI-CEC, network control, IR learning or a hub?
  • Do you want a true replacement or an attachment that supplements the Siri Remote?
  • Can the chosen design reach equipment in its normal location, including inside a cabinet?
  • Have you checked current compatibility, price, stock and included batteries or charging equipment?

For a single purchase that addresses tactile control, TV/audio operation and Siri, start with the One For All URC 1110. Pick Function101 for the simplest Apple TV button layout, SofaBaton for a multi-device theater, BroadLink RM4 Pro for app-based scenes, and Sideclick when the best remote is still the Siri Remote you already own.
