If you want a modern operating substitute for the postwar Lionel No. 773, start with a LionChief Plus Hudson. Choose Lionel’s J3a Hudson 6-28072 when scale detail and broad O-54 curves matter most, or a No. 785 when you specifically want a mechanically related, vintage Lionel experience. A 4-6-2 Pacific or an MTH RailKing 4-6-0 makes sense only when you are willing to change the locomotive’s wheel arrangement and appearance.
Which locomotive should replace a Lionel No. 773?
The right replacement depends on what you are preserving. The 773 is a postwar 4-6-4 Hudson introduced in 1950, so a true substitute keeps the Hudson silhouette and four-wheel trailing truck. Other choices preserve different priorities: modern command operation, scale fidelity, vintage Lionel mechanics, passenger-service character, or a completely different steam-era look.
| Choice | Best fit | Documented information | Main caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lionel LionChief Plus Hudson | New locomotive with modern operation | 4-6-4 Hudson versions in many road names; catalog family documents command, sound, smoke and lighting features | Minimum-radius and exact equipment vary by SKU |
| Lionel New York Central J3a Hudson 6-28072 | Scale appearance and detail | Die-cast boiler, tender, trucks and pilots; command control and sound; O-54 minimum radius; about 24 inches long | Historical or secondary-market availability; needs broad curves and clearance |
| Lionel No. 785 Hudson | Vintage Lionel continuity | Service literature describes it as a continuation of the Lionel Scale Hudson series; motor, gear train and reversing-unit assemblies are similar to the 1950 773 | Legacy-market condition, parts and servicing require inspection |
| Lionel 4-6-2 Pacific | Passenger locomotive without a Hudson requirement | Catalog describes a medium-build passenger engine with substantial pulling power | Different wheel arrangement, proportions and curve needs |
| MTH RailKing 4-6-0 | A different steam-era concept | A 2025 RailKing O-gauge 4-6-0 announcement confirms a current non-Lionel steam option | Not a visual Hudson replacement; match it to the intended consist |
What the No. 773 represents
The No. 773 is not simply any large O-gauge steam engine. It is a postwar Lionel 4-6-4 Hudson from 1950, and its appeal comes from the combination of a fast passenger prototype, a long boiler-and-tender profile and Lionel’s scale-Hudson lineage. That gives you three useful reference points when shopping:
Recommended Free Tools
- Wheel arrangement: a 4-6-4 has four leading wheels, six driving wheels and a four-wheel trailing truck. A replacement that changes to a Pacific or Ten-Wheeler will have a visibly different stance.
- Era and appearance: a Hudson suits heavyweight or streamlined passenger consists. A freight-oriented or industrial engine may pull the same cars but will not create the same scene.
- Operating expectations: an original postwar engine is generally approached as a conventional-control collectible, while current command-equipped models add digital control, sound, smoke and lighting features.
Use the 773 as a reference for proportions and operating role, not as a promise that every alternative will fit the same track. Scale models can be substantially longer and wider than compact or semi-scale locomotives, and the manufacturer’s minimum-radius statement should decide compatibility.

How to choose an alternative
1. Decide whether the Hudson shape is non-negotiable
If the four-wheel trailing truck, long passenger profile and Hudson identity are the reason you want a 773, limit the search to another Hudson. The LionChief Plus family, J3a 6-28072 and No. 785 all preserve that basic wheel arrangement. A Pacific or 4-6-0 is an intentional change, not a like-for-like replacement.
2. Measure curves before comparing features
Write down the minimum-radius designation of every curve on the route the locomotive will use, including hidden staging, reversing loops and temporary display track. Then compare it with the candidate’s specification. The J3a listing documents an O-54 minimum radius; a layout with tighter curves should not be assumed compatible. If a listing does not state a minimum radius, ask the seller or consult the exact manual before paying.
3. Allow for length and overhang
The J3a is listed at approximately 24 inches in length. That dimension affects more than the curve itself: the tender can swing toward an adjacent track, pilots can approach platforms and signals, and diaphragms or passenger-car couplers can compress on curves. Check clearance at turnouts, tunnels, bridges, crossings and station platforms. A locomotive that technically negotiates a curve can still foul a neighboring track.

4. Match control systems to the rest of the layout
Modern LionChief Plus and command-equipped scale engines are designed around digital operation, with sound, smoke and lighting documented for the catalog family or specific model. A vintage 773-family engine may instead be operated conventionally, with its behavior determined by the transformer, track power and reversing unit. Decide whether you want a phone or remote-based operating environment, a command controller, or simple variable-voltage control before choosing the locomotive.
5. Separate new-product convenience from vintage authenticity
A new locomotive normally gives you a defined warranty path and current documentation, subject to stock and the exact road-name release. A used 785 or 773-family locomotive may deliver the period feel you want, but condition matters more than the model number. Budget time for inspection, cleaning and possible repair rather than treating a vintage engine as ready-to-run by default.

LionChief Plus Hudson: the safest modern substitute
For most operators who want to replace a 773 without changing the visual identity of the train, a LionChief Plus Hudson is the most practical starting point. Lionel’s catalog describes the family as a 4-6-4 Hudson and lists versions in numerous road names, including Lionel Lines, Milwaukee Road, Western Maryland, Reading and Northern, Chicago and North Western, Southern Pacific, Canadian Pacific, Alaska, Santa Fe, Lackawanna, Burlington, Canadian National, Chesapeake & Ohio and Union Pacific.
The value of this option is operational rather than historical exactness. The catalog family documents command operation, sound, smoke and lighting, so the locomotive can provide the features many owners expect from a current O-gauge purchase. Those capabilities also make it easier to build operating sessions around announcements, bell and whistle effects, smoke output and remotely controlled lighting, provided the selected release includes the feature set you need.

What to verify on the exact SKU
- Minimum radius: road names and tooling can differ. Do not infer curve requirements from the Hudson name alone.
- Control method: confirm whether the release uses the command system already installed on your layout and whether conventional operation is supported in the way you expect.
- Tender and couplers: check coupler type, pilot clearance and compatibility with your passenger cars.
- Sound and smoke controls: read the product manual for fluid requirements, volume controls and any restrictions on running the smoke unit dry.
- Availability: catalog presence does not guarantee current stock. Confirm the production run, dealer inventory and warranty terms at purchase.
Choose this family when your priority is a new Hudson with modern features and a broad choice of paint schemes. It is less suitable when you specifically need the exact tooling, dimensions or historical production details of a postwar 773.
Lionel New York Central J3a Hudson 6-28072: the scale-detail choice
The Lionel Collectors archive documents the New York Central J3a Hudson 6-28072 as an O-gauge scale locomotive with a die-cast boiler, tender, trucks and pilots. The listing also records command control and sound, an O-54 minimum radius and an approximate length of 24 inches. Those specifications make it the clearest choice for a modeller who values scale presence over compact-track flexibility.
Why it suits a 773 owner
The J3a retains the 4-6-4 arrangement and passenger-Hudson profile, so it reads immediately as a successor in the same visual category. The die-cast components support a substantial appearance, while command and sound provide the operating functions associated with a modern scale model. Its length gives a train a convincing main-line presence, especially with a matching tender and full passenger consist.

Layout implications
O-54 is a hard planning constraint, not a suggestion. Audit every route the engine may take, including crossover paths that are used only during switching. Leave additional side clearance where a long boiler and tender swing toward the next track. Recheck platform edges, bridge portals and tunnel mouths after the locomotive is on the track; a clearance diagram made for a shorter engine may not apply.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Because the documented listing is an archive entry rather than a guarantee of current production, treat this model as a historical or secondary-market purchase unless a seller confirms otherwise. Ask for the locomotive’s actual running history, command-board condition, sound output, smoke-unit operation, wheel wear and included parts. A clean, complete example can be an excellent scale Hudson; an incomplete one can require specialized service before it is dependable.
Lionel No. 785 Hudson: a vintage-family successor
If you want a period Lionel experience rather than a current digital platform, the No. 785 is the most direct vintage-family alternative. Lionel’s service document states that “The 785 Hudson Locomotive is a continuation of the famous Lionel Scale Hudson Series.” It also says that the motor, gear train and reversing-unit assemblies are similar to those used in the 1950 773.
That mechanical relationship is useful to a collector: the 785 can feel like a later expression of the same design tradition while remaining an O-gauge Hudson. It is not, however, a substitute for a new locomotive with guaranteed current electronics or retail support. The service document dates from 1987, so condition and parts availability must be evaluated as legacy-market concerns.
Inspection checklist for a 785
- Ask the seller to demonstrate forward, neutral and reverse operation at low and moderate voltage.
- Listen for gear noise, binding or rhythmic knocking that could indicate worn gears, dry bearings or damaged drivetrain parts.
- Inspect wiring insulation, solder joints and the reversing-unit area for brittle insulation or amateur repairs.
- Test the smoke unit only with the correct fluid and confirm that it produces smoke without overheating or stalling the motor.
- Check the pilot, tender and couplers for cracks, missing screws and non-original substitutions that affect your consist.
- Verify that replacement parts or a qualified repair service are available before committing to a locomotive that will be difficult to return.
Buy the 785 when authenticity, mechanical lineage and hands-on restoration are part of the hobby. Choose a current Hudson instead when predictable command operation and an easier support path matter more.

When a 4-6-2 Pacific is the better answer
A Pacific is not a Hudson with different packaging. Lionel’s catalog describes the 4-6-2 as a medium-build passenger locomotive with substantial pulling power and notes that Pacifics were widely used in North America before dieselization. Its two-wheel trailing truck gives the engine a different profile and operating identity.
Select a Pacific when the passenger-service role is more important than matching the 773’s four-wheel trailing truck. It can anchor a consist of coaches, head-end cars or a shorter branch-line passenger train, but compare the locomotive’s minimum curve, overall length, tender clearance and control system with your layout. The catalog description establishes its passenger role and pulling capability; it does not establish that every Pacific release will fit the same curves as a Hudson.
Pacific-versus-Hudson decision
- Choose the Hudson if the locomotive must look right beside a scale passenger consist built around the 773 concept.
- Choose the Pacific if you want a medium-build passenger engine or a different prototype silhouette.
- Compare the actual release, not only the wheel arrangement: tooling, tender length and electronics can change the layout requirements.
MTH RailKing 4-6-0: a deliberate change of concept
MTH announced a 2025 RailKing O-gauge 4-6-0 steam locomotive alongside Overton passenger-car offerings. That announcement confirms a current non-Lionel O-gauge steam category, but a 4-6-0 Ten-Wheeler is an adjacent alternative rather than a visual Hudson replacement.
The RailKing option makes sense when you want to design a different train: a smaller passenger consist, a branch-line scene or a steam-era roster that is not centered on high-speed Hudson proportions. Match the locomotive with the cars and scenery you intend to run, then verify minimum radius, coupler height, control method and sound features for the specific release. Do not buy it expecting the same stance, trailing-truck appearance or main-line presence as a 4-6-4.

- List the tightest curve: record the manufacturer’s radius designation for each section, including hidden track and temporary display loops.
- Mark adjacent-track spacing: identify locations where a long boiler, cab or tender can swing into the neighboring track.
- Measure structures: check tunnel portals, bridge sides, platform edges, signals and scenery near the railhead.
- Test the complete consist: couple the intended tender and first passenger car, then run through turnouts and reverse curves at slow speed.
- Check electrical sections: command-equipped and conventional engines may require different wiring, isolated blocks or controller settings.
- Document the result: keep the locomotive’s minimum radius, length and clearance notes with the layout plan so future purchases can be screened quickly.
The J3a’s published O-54 requirement and approximately 24-inch length illustrate why this process matters. A track plan designed around shorter equipment may need rerouting or wider spacing before a scale Hudson can operate reliably.
Control, sound and smoke: avoiding an incompatible purchase
Feature lists are useful only when they match the way you run trains. A command-equipped Hudson can be a poor choice if your layout has only a basic power pack and no plan for command operation; a conventional vintage locomotive can be frustrating if you expect app-style control or synchronized effects.
Questions for modern models
- Is the command controller included, optional or required for the advertised functions?
- Can the locomotive run conventionally, and what features remain available in that mode?
- How are smoke and sound volume controlled during long sessions?
- Does your transformer or command system provide the required power and wiring arrangement?
Questions for vintage models
- Does the motor start smoothly without excessive voltage?
- Does the reversing unit cycle consistently?
- Are smoke, lighting and couplers operational, or are they being sold as untested?
- Can you obtain service, wiring diagrams and replacement parts if a failure appears?
For any used locomotive, request a running video that shows both directions and the accessories you care about. “Untested” is a condition statement, not evidence that the engine works.
Buying checklist: new, archived and used
For a current LionChief Plus Hudson
- Match the road name and catalog number to the exact release, not a generic product photograph.
- Confirm minimum radius, length, tender style, couplers and included controller.
- Read the warranty and return policy before adding smoke fluid or making modifications.
- Check whether the dealer has the locomotive physically in stock or is listing a future or discontinued run.
For the J3a 6-28072
- Confirm that the locomotive is complete and that the command and sound systems respond correctly.
- Ask for the seller’s measurement and compare it with the archived approximately 24-inch length.
- Verify that your route meets O-54 and that adjacent-track clearances are adequate.
- Price the locomotive according to condition, documentation and service history; archive status alone does not establish value.
For a 785 or other vintage Hudson
- Inspect motor, gears, reversing unit, wiring, smoke unit, wheels and couplers.
- Ask whether parts have been replaced and whether original components are included.
- Budget for cleaning and professional service if the locomotive has been stored for years.
- Use a return period when possible, especially if the seller cannot provide a powered demonstration.
A practical decision path
- Need a new Hudson with modern features? Select a LionChief Plus Hudson, then verify the exact SKU’s radius and control requirements.
- Need scale detail and have O-54 curves? Investigate the J3a 6-28072, concentrating on condition and secondary-market support.
- Want a vintage Lionel-family experience? Search for a No. 785 and inspect the mechanical and electrical systems before purchase.
- Only need a passenger locomotive? Compare a 4-6-2 Pacific on curve, clearance and control requirements rather than assuming Hudson compatibility.
- Want a different train concept? Consider the MTH RailKing 4-6-0 with a matching consist, accepting that it will not look like a Hudson.
Bottom line
For the broadest combination of Hudson appearance, new-product convenience and documented modern operating features, the LionChief Plus Hudson is the default alternative to a Lionel No. 773. The J3a 6-28072 is the specialist choice for scale detail on O-54 track, while the No. 785 is the collector’s route to Lionel-family continuity. A Pacific or RailKing 4-6-0 can be excellent O-gauge steam, but each answers a different question and should be chosen for its own prototype, consist and layout requirements.
