For the closest like-for-like replacement, choose the HP Spectre x360 14. It keeps the premium 360-degree laptop design, adds a 2.8K OLED multitouch panel with up to 120Hz operation and 100% DCI-P3 coverage, and supports an optional MPP 2.0 tilt pen. If your priority is the most natural drawing posture rather than an integrated keyboard, choose the Microsoft Surface Pro 11 with Slim Pen. The Lenovo Yoga 9 2-in-1 14 Gen 11 remains the benchmark because its 2.8K OLED display reaches 120Hz with exceptionally broad color coverage and its Yoga Pen Gen 2 is listed with a case.

Quick verdict: which Yoga 9 alternative should you buy?

The right choice depends more on how you hold the device than on small processor differences. The HP Spectre x360 14 is the direct substitute for someone who wants one premium notebook that converts into a tablet. The Microsoft Surface Pro 11 is the better fit for a reader who draws for long sessions and wants a tablet-first posture with less keyboard in the way. The Lenovo Yoga 9 2-in-1 14 Gen 11 is still the reference point when a bundled pen, a 360-degree hinge, and a high-gamut OLED screen are all important.

  • Choose the HP Spectre x360 14 for a conventional laptop keyboard, a 360-degree hinge, OLED color, and a high-refresh display. Confirm whether the exact configuration includes the pen.
  • Choose the Surface Pro 11 for the most flexible drawing posture and a detachable tablet design. Add the keyboard and Slim Pen to the purchase calculation if they are not bundled.
  • Choose the Yoga 9 Gen 11 when the Yoga Pen Gen 2 bundle and its specified 2.8K OLED color coverage are more valuable than changing to another form factor.

What the Lenovo Yoga 9 2-in-1 14 Gen 11 sets as the baseline

Lenovo’s PSREF lists a 14-inch 2.8K OLED touchscreen with a 2,880 × 1,800 resolution, a maximum 120Hz refresh rate, 100% DCI-P3, 100% sRGB, and 99% Adobe RGB coverage. Those figures matter for two different jobs: high refresh makes pen movement and scrolling appear smoother, while wide gamut gives illustrations and reference images more room to display saturated colors.

The 360-degree sound-bar hinge supports laptop, tent, stand, and tablet modes. That means the keyboard remains part of the computer in every posture, but it can be folded behind the screen for writing or drawing. Lenovo lists the Yoga Pen Gen 2 with a case, so the reference configuration has a clearer out-of-box pen story than many competing configurations. Lenovo describes the pen as intended to make drawing and note-taking feel natural, precise, and effortless, but the practical result still depends on the app, pen settings, and the way you work.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Use this baseline when comparing alternatives: look for a similarly sharp screen, a refresh rate that will not make inking feel sluggish, accurate color for art, a pen with tilt and pressure support, and a posture you can hold comfortably for a full class or drawing session.

HP Spectre x360 14: the closest conventional replacement

Why its design matches the Yoga

The Spectre x360 14 preserves the central idea behind the Yoga: a full notebook that turns into a tablet without detaching the keyboard. In laptop mode you can type notes, manage files, or use a desktop-style art workspace. Folding the hinge into stand, tent, or tablet positions lets you present a screen, stabilize it on a desk, or write directly on the panel.

This is the most straightforward alternative for someone who likes the Yoga’s integrated keyboard and does not want to carry a separate keyboard accessory. It also avoids the small but important decision of where to store a detachable keyboard while drawing.

Display strengths for drawing and media

HP specifies a 14-inch 2.8K OLED multitouch screen with a variable 48–120Hz refresh range. The 120Hz ceiling puts it in the same high-refresh class as the Yoga’s specified maximum, while the variable range can let the panel operate below 120Hz when an application or power mode does not need the fastest setting.

HP specifies 100% DCI-P3 coverage, 400 nits for SDR, and 500 nits for HDR. The brightness figures are useful when you compare the screen with a classroom, office, or studio environment, but they do not guarantee identical visibility in every room. Glossy touch surfaces can reflect windows and overhead lights, so position the display and use a hood or shade when your work is sensitive to reflections.

Pen caveat: verify the box

HP’s specification identifies the “HP USB-C Rechargeable MPP 2.0 Tilt Nightfall Black Pen” as optional. MPP 2.0 and tilt support make the Spectre a credible handwriting and illustration platform, but the word optional is the key purchasing detail. Two Spectre x360 14 listings can have different prices and accessories even when the laptop name looks nearly identical.

Before ordering, confirm all of the following on the exact configuration page:

  • The pen is included rather than merely supported.
  • The pen is the rechargeable MPP 2.0 tilt model, not a differently specified accessory.
  • A charger or charging cable is included if the pen requires one.
  • The return policy covers pen or touch problems as well as the computer itself.

Who should choose it?

Choose the Spectre x360 14 when you want the Yoga experience translated almost directly: a 14-inch convertible, a built-in keyboard, OLED color, and a 120Hz-class panel. It is especially compelling if you already work in a laptop-first setup and only switch to tablet mode for signatures, annotations, diagrams, or shorter drawing sessions. If a pen is not included, add its cost before comparing the package with the Yoga.

Microsoft Surface Pro 11: the tablet-first drawing choice

Why the posture is different

The Surface Pro 11 separates the display from the keyboard. That changes the drawing experience more than a specification table can show: you can place the tablet at a low angle, hold it like a sketchbook, or remove the keyboard completely when it would interfere with your wrist. The detachable format also reduces the amount of hardware between your hand and the screen during long illustration sessions.

Tom’s Guide’s current 2-in-1 guide lists Surface Pro 11 as an ultraportable option with Slim Pen support and places it among strong devices for note-taking and drawing. Creative Bloq’s current drawing roundup says it would steer digital-art readers toward Surface Pro 11 first, while describing Surface Laptop Studio 2 as a creative all-rounder. Those are editorial recommendations, not laboratory performance measurements, so use them as guidance about use case rather than as a promise of a particular drawing speed.

Budget for the complete kit

A Surface Pro 11 purchase can involve three separate pieces: the tablet, a keyboard, and a Slim Pen. Depending on the bundle and region, the keyboard and pen may be separate purchases. Compare the complete kit with a Yoga or Spectre configuration that already includes a pen, then add any replacement tips, charger, and warranty coverage you need.

Who should choose it?

Choose Surface Pro 11 when drawing posture, low carry weight, and the ability to work without a keyboard matter more than having an integrated notebook. It is the strongest fit for sketchbook-style use, handwritten annotations on a lap or desk, and readers who already own a compatible keyboard or are comfortable buying one separately.

Do not choose it solely because a detachable tablet sounds more portable. Include the keyboard and pen in the bag you will actually carry. A tablet that is light by itself can become a different proposition once its working accessories are attached.

Pen systems: the detail that can change the value comparison

Included versus optional

The Yoga 9 Gen 11 listing includes Yoga Pen Gen 2 with a case. HP lists its MPP 2.0 tilt pen as optional, and Surface Pro 11 bundles vary for the keyboard and Slim Pen. This difference can outweigh a modest processor or storage change because a touchscreen computer is not a complete handwriting tool until you have a compatible active stylus.

Make a simple bundle inventory before comparing prices:

  1. Write down the exact laptop or tablet configuration.
  2. Mark whether a pen is physically included, supported but absent, or not clearly identified.
  3. Record whether the keyboard is integrated, bundled, or sold separately.
  4. Add the cost of a charger, replacement tips, and any protection you would buy immediately.
  5. Compare the resulting totals, not the headline price of the screen unit alone.

Pressure, tilt, and palm rejection

For drawing, pressure controls line weight or opacity in applications that support it. Tilt can change shading or stroke behavior in applications that implement it. Palm rejection is handled jointly by the pen hardware, touch system, operating environment, and the app; a pen that supports a feature does not guarantee that every drawing or note-taking application uses it identically.

Test the pen in the software you actually use. Draw slow diagonal lines, fast curves, light-to-heavy strokes, and broad tilted strokes. Rest your palm on the screen while writing. Check whether strokes start cleanly, whether accidental touch marks appear, and whether the app exposes pressure or tilt controls. Also test the eraser or shortcut controls you rely on before committing to a platform.

Replacement tips and charging

Replacement-tip availability is a legitimate ownership question for all three ecosystems. Confirm that tips can be purchased in your region and that the package includes a practical charging method for a rechargeable pen. Keep the pen in the same case or sleeve as the computer so it does not become the accessory that is left at home.

Display comparison for notes, illustration, and reference images

Resolution and workspace

The Yoga’s 2,880 × 1,800 resolution and the Spectre’s specified 2.8K resolution provide a dense 14-inch canvas for handwriting, palettes, and reference material. A dense panel can show more of a page or artwork at once, but interface scaling may be necessary if menus become too small for comfortable touch use.

The supplied coverage does not state Surface Pro 11’s resolution, panel technology, gamut, brightness, or refresh rate. Do not assume that its drawing reputation establishes parity with the Yoga or Spectre on any one display metric. If color-critical work matters, obtain the exact Surface configuration’s panel specifications and judge them alongside the pen and posture.

Color gamut

The Yoga is specified at 100% DCI-P3, 100% sRGB, and 99% Adobe RGB. The Spectre is specified at 100% DCI-P3. These are coverage claims, not a guarantee of perfect factory calibration, and they describe the range of colors the panel can represent rather than how every unit is tuned.

For illustration, ask which color space your client, school, printer, or publishing workflow expects. For general notes, diagrams, and web graphics, accurate sRGB handling may matter more than pursuing the widest possible gamut. For video or wide-gamut artwork, DCI-P3 coverage becomes more relevant. Surface Pro 11 buyers should verify the particular panel rather than infer it from the product name.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Refresh rate, brightness, and reflections

The Yoga specifies a maximum 120Hz refresh rate. The Spectre specifies a variable 48–120Hz range. Higher refresh can make scrolling and pen movement appear smoother, while brightness affects how easily you can see a page in a bright room. HP’s 400-nit SDR and 500-nit HDR figures are stated operating targets for those modes, not a promise that every scene will look equally bright.

OLED panels can produce strong contrast, but a glossy touch layer can reflect lamps and windows. During a purchase test, open a white note page and a dark illustration, then view both under the lighting where you will work. Look for reflections, uneven brightness, and any comfort issue that does not show in a product photograph.

360-degree convertible or detachable tablet?

Work pattern 360-degree convertible advantage Detachable tablet advantage
Typing long notes Keyboard is always attached and ready Requires attaching the keyboard or using an external one
Sketching for an extended session Folds away, but the keyboard remains behind the display Screen can be used without a keyboard underneath or behind it
Lap use Integrated base is familiar and stable in laptop mode Keyboard accessory and kickstand setup may need more adjustment
Desk presentation or video Stand and tent modes are built into the hinge Kickstand-style tablet setup can separate screen and keyboard
Travel One attached computer-and-keyboard unit Tablet can be lighter alone, but the complete kit includes accessories

Neither arrangement is universally superior. A 360-degree hinge is convenient when writing is an occasional mode change. A detachable tablet is more natural when drawing posture is the primary activity and typing is secondary.

Performance, thermals, and sustained art work

The supplied specifications do not establish a single processor, memory, storage, GPU, battery-life result, fan-noise measurement, or sustained-load benchmark that applies to every Yoga, Spectre, or Surface configuration. CPU and memory options can vary by model and region, particularly for the Spectre, so avoid choosing on the family name alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For your own workload, identify the heaviest task you will perform: large layered canvases, high-resolution exports, video, 3D work, or mainly handwritten pages. Then check the exact configuration’s memory and storage before buying. More memory can matter when an art application, reference browser tabs, and communication tools remain open together; storage matters when local project files and source assets accumulate. Those are buying principles, not a claim that one of these families is faster than another.

Ask whether the computer stays comfortable and responsive after an extended drawing session rather than only during a short demonstration. If a retailer allows returns, use the first week to open your largest working files, keep the device plugged in and unplugged, and listen for fan behavior in the room where you normally work.

Portability, charging, and the real carry load

Compare the weight and size of the complete working kit: computer, keyboard if detachable, pen, charger, and protective sleeve. A Surface Pro 11 can be carried as a tablet, but a student or professional who types will usually carry the keyboard too. A Yoga or Spectre includes the keyboard in the computer’s chassis, simplifying the count but not eliminating the need for a pen and charger.

Charging is another practical distinction. The HP pen is specified as USB-C rechargeable. The Yoga listing identifies the Yoga Pen Gen 2 but does not state its charging method in the supplied material. Surface Pro 11 Slim Pen charging depends on the accessory and bundle. Verify the pen’s charging arrangement before travel so you do not end up carrying an extra cable or discovering that the pen cannot be charged from the setup you brought.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Total-cost checklist before you order

  • Base computer: record the exact CPU, memory, storage, display, and regional model code.
  • Pen: confirm inclusion, supported features, charging method, and replacement-tip availability.
  • Keyboard: include it for Surface Pro 11 if you need laptop-style typing.
  • Power: verify the computer charger and any separate pen charging cable or dock.
  • Protection: budget for a case or sleeve that stores the pen safely.
  • Warranty and returns: check coverage for touch, OLED pixels, hinge or kickstand, keyboard, and pen faults.

Only after this inventory should you compare advertised prices. A lower screen-unit price can disappear when the missing pen and keyboard are added.

A practical buying and testing procedure

  1. Define your primary posture. Decide whether you will type at least half the time, draw for long uninterrupted sessions, or alternate evenly. This usually identifies convertible versus detachable before specifications do.
  2. Lock the accessory bundle. Save the exact listing and verify the Yoga Pen Gen 2, HP MPP 2.0 pen, Surface keyboard, and Slim Pen contents in writing.
  3. Check the display against your work. Confirm resolution, refresh range, color claims, brightness figures, and the exact Surface panel if you are considering one.
  4. Test handwriting. Write small letters, fast headings, and long lines. Try palm contact and both portrait-like and landscape-like orientations.
  5. Test illustration behavior. Use light and heavy pressure, tilt, slow curves, quick strokes, undo, and any pen shortcut you rely on.
  6. Test reflections and ergonomics. Use the screen under your actual lights and hold the device in the position you expect to use for an hour.
  7. Test the complete kit. Carry the device, keyboard, pen, charger, and case together. Confirm that the pen has a secure storage location.
  8. Keep purchase evidence. Retain the configuration page and invoice so an omitted accessory or mismatched pen can be resolved without guessing.

Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them

Assuming every Spectre includes a pen

HP explicitly labels the MPP 2.0 tilt pen optional. Treat an unconfirmed pen as absent until the exact configuration says otherwise.

Comparing a bare Surface tablet with a complete Yoga

Count the Surface keyboard and Slim Pen when comparing it with a Yoga listing that includes its pen and case. Compare complete working systems, not just display units.

Choosing by refresh rate alone

A 120Hz maximum is useful, but comfortable drawing also depends on pen response, palm rejection, app behavior, screen reflections, and your preferred posture. Test the entire interaction rather than treating one number as a verdict.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring regional configuration changes

CPU, memory, storage, display options, accessory bundles, and availability can vary by region and configuration. Use the model number and the contents of the specific box you will receive.

Overlooking replacement accessories

Tips wear out, pens get misplaced, and detachable keyboards can be damaged separately from the tablet. Check that replacements are sold where you live and include those future costs in your decision.

Bottom line

The HP Spectre x360 14 is the best direct alternative to the Lenovo Yoga 9 2-in-1 14 Gen 11: it retains the 360-degree notebook format while offering a 2.8K OLED multitouch display, up to 120Hz refresh, 100% DCI-P3 coverage, and optional MPP 2.0 tilt-pen support. The Microsoft Surface Pro 11 is the better choice when a detachable, tablet-first drawing posture matters most, provided you budget for the Slim Pen and keyboard as needed. The Yoga remains the strongest all-in-one reference because its listed 2.8K OLED reaches 120Hz, covers 100% DCI-P3, 100% sRGB, and 99% Adobe RGB, and includes the Yoga Pen Gen 2 with a case.
