The best alternative depends on what you want to replace: the Legion Go Gen 2’s large 8.8-inch OLED screen, its Windows software flexibility, or the idea of carrying a desktop-style game library in a handheld. Steam Deck OLED is the clearest choice for a SteamOS, console-like experience. ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X20 is the premium Windows option in this shortlist, with a 7.4-inch 1080p/120Hz OLED display and an 80Wh battery. MSI Claw 8 AI+ (A2VM) is worth considering when two Thunderbolt 4 ports and an 80Wh battery matter more than a confirmed price or a fully documented specification sheet.

Those are specification-based recommendations, not claims about frame rates, comfort, fan noise or real-world endurance. The right decision turns on your game library, storefront requirements, preferred interface, screen size, battery expectations and local pricing.

What the Legion Go Gen 2 baseline means

Lenovo’s Legion Go Gen 2 is the reference point for this comparison. Lenovo’s US product listing describes an 8.8-inch OLED display and a Windows 11 platform. That combination gives you a large handheld viewing area and access to Windows software beyond Steam, but it also means you are using a desktop operating system on a small touchscreen device rather than a single-purpose console interface.

Windows can expose more launchers, stores, utilities and conventional PC software than a Steam-centered system. It does not guarantee that every game will work perfectly on a handheld: anti-cheat systems, launchers, controller support, graphics settings and account requirements vary by title. Treat compatibility as a game-by-game question.

Steam Deck OLED: the SteamOS-first alternative

What you get

Valve lists SteamOS 3, a 7.4-inch 1280×800 HDR OLED display, a 50Wh battery and 512GB or 1TB OLED configurations. Valve’s technical specifications give an estimated 3 to 12 hours of gameplay for OLED models, depending on the content. That range is a content-dependent estimate, not a promise for a particular game or graphics setting.

Valve describes the product as “Powerful, portable PC gaming, designed for comfort and a console-like user experience.” That is vendor positioning, but it accurately identifies the platform’s central difference from a Windows handheld: the software experience is built around SteamOS and a controller-friendly game library rather than a conventional Windows desktop.

Why choose it instead of the Legion Go Gen 2

  • You want SteamOS. SteamOS 3 is the defining reason to choose the Deck. The interface is centered on launching and managing games through Steam rather than navigating Windows menus with a touch screen or desktop pointer.
  • Your library is primarily on Steam. A Steam-centered device reduces the number of launchers you need to manage. Individual games can still have compatibility requirements, so check the specific title before buying.
  • You prefer a smaller handheld display. At 7.4 inches, the OLED Deck is smaller than the Legion Go Gen 2’s listed 8.8-inch panel. That can be an advantage when you want a less screen-dominant device, but it also gives you less physical viewing area.
  • You want a published runtime range. Valve supplies a 3–12-hour estimate tied to game content. Compare that with battery capacity carefully; capacity and runtime are different measurements.

Where it is not a direct match

The Deck OLED does not match the Legion’s listed screen size or the ASUS model’s 1920×1080 resolution and 120Hz refresh rate. SteamOS also is not the same software environment as Windows 11. If your must-have games, launchers or utilities require Windows, verify support for the exact title and setup before treating SteamOS as interchangeable with Windows.

Choose the storage configuration

Valve lists 512GB and 1TB OLED variants. A larger internal drive gives you more room for modern installs, but the correct choice depends on the size of your library and how often you uninstall games. Check Valve’s current configuration prices and availability at the time you buy; those details can change.

ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X20: a premium Windows alternative

Published configuration

ASUS’s US page lists the ROG Xbox Ally X20 (2026) with Windows 11 Home, an AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor, 24GB of LPDDR5X memory, a 1TB SSD, a 7.4-inch 1920×1080 OLED display running at 120Hz and an 80Wh battery. The same US store page listed a price of $1,299.99 when the specification was researched. Treat that amount as a time- and region-specific listing, not a permanent street price.

Why it suits a Windows-focused buyer

If your replacement goal is “a gaming PC that fits in a handheld,” Windows 11 Home keeps the familiar PC software environment. You can evaluate the launcher, anti-cheat and peripheral requirements of each game in the same operating-system family used by a conventional Windows gaming PC. That is an ecosystem advantage, not proof that every game will run smoothly or that the device will replace a desktop in every workload.

The 7.4-inch OLED panel is smaller than Lenovo’s listed 8.8-inch display, but the ASUS specification provides a higher 1920×1080 resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. Decide which attribute matters more: a physically larger image, more pixels, a higher refresh ceiling, or OLED contrast. A specification sheet cannot tell you which screen will look preferable in your room, at your seating distance or in a particular game.

Battery capacity versus runtime

The listed 80Wh battery is substantially a capacity figure, not an endurance result. Game settings, frame-rate targets, brightness, wireless activity and power limits affect how long a charge lasts. Do not infer that the ASUS device will last a particular number of hours merely because its battery is rated at 80Wh, and do not compare that capacity directly with Valve’s 3–12-hour content-dependent estimate as if they were the same kind of measurement.

Price and regional checks

The $1,299.99 figure came from ASUS’s US page at the time of research. Before purchase, confirm the current US price, stock, warranty terms, keyboard or charger bundle and the exact model number. A different country can have a different configuration or a different launch price.

MSI Claw 8 AI+ A2VM: the connectivity-oriented Windows option

Verified features for the named model

MSI’s UK specification sheet lists an 80Wh battery and two Thunderbolt 4 ports for the Claw 8 AI+ A2VM configuration. Those ports may matter if you plan to connect high-bandwidth peripherals, external storage, a dock or a display. Thunderbolt 4 capability is a practical differentiator for a desk-and-handheld setup, but the usefulness depends on the accessories and displays you already own.

MSI warns that specifications and bundles vary by country. The sheet used for this comparison does not establish a universal price, storage size, memory amount, display specification or operating-system configuration for every Claw 8 AI+ model. Check the complete specification for the exact regional SKU instead of transferring details from the A2VM sheet to another listing.

Who should put it on the shortlist

  • Docking is central to your plan. Two Thunderbolt 4 ports give the specified A2VM configuration more explicitly documented high-speed connectivity than the other entries in this comparison.
  • You want a Windows-class handheld. Confirm the operating system on the local product page before ordering, then verify that your launchers and games support the setup.
  • You are comfortable comparing SKUs. MSI’s country warning makes model-number checking essential. A name shared across markets does not guarantee identical memory, storage, display or bundle details.

What you cannot conclude from the published sheet

An 80Wh rating does not establish battery life in a game, and two Thunderbolt 4 ports do not establish frame rates, thermals or comfort. The available specification also does not support a fair price comparison with the ASUS listing or the Steam Deck OLED configurations. Treat the MSI entry as a connectivity and battery-capacity candidate, not as a proven overall winner.

Screen-size and display decision

Display choice is one of the clearest differences in this shortlist. The following values come from the manufacturers’ published specifications.

Device Published display information
Lenovo Legion Go Gen 2 8.8-inch OLED
Steam Deck OLED 7.4-inch, 1280×800 HDR OLED
ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X20 (2026) 7.4-inch, 1920×1080 OLED at 120Hz

Choose the Legion’s larger panel when

You read small interface text, play strategy or simulation games with dense menus, or simply value a physically larger image. The trade-off is that a larger panel can make the handheld feel more screen-forward in a bag or on a small table. This comparison does not include verified weight or comfort measurements, so do not turn screen size into a claim about portability or ergonomics.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the Steam Deck’s format when

You prefer the SteamOS interface and are happy with 1280×800 on a 7.4-inch HDR OLED display. The resolution is not the same as the ASUS model’s 1920×1080 specification, and neither number alone predicts image quality in every game.

Choose the ASUS panel when

You specifically want a 7.4-inch OLED display with a published 1920×1080 resolution and 120Hz refresh rate. Whether a game can use that refresh rate depends on the game, settings and hardware workload; the specification only states the panel’s capability.

Battery: how to compare the numbers correctly

Device or configuration Published battery information
Steam Deck OLED 50Wh; Valve estimates 3–12 hours of gameplay depending on content.
ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X20 (2026) 80Wh.
MSI Claw 8 AI+ A2VM 80Wh for the specified UK configuration.

Battery capacity is the amount of energy the pack is designed to store. Runtime is the time a particular device lasts under particular software and power conditions. A larger Wh number can be useful, but it cannot prove longer life without comparable testing. Valve’s 3–12-hour range is explicitly dependent on content; the ASUS and MSI figures above are capacities, not runtime claims.

Questions to ask before buying

  • Will you play demanding 3D games, lighter indie games, streaming clients or a mixture?
  • Do you normally play near a charger, on a train or in a place where outlets are scarce?
  • Are you willing to lower brightness, frame-rate targets or graphics settings to extend a session?
  • Is the local charger included and suitable for the advertised power mode?

Answer those questions using the exact regional model and current manual. Do not use the battery table as a substitute for a same-game endurance test.

Operating system and game-library fit

SteamOS 3

SteamOS 3 is the Steam Deck OLED’s platform. It is designed around a controller-friendly, console-like flow, which can reduce the friction of resuming games and changing handheld settings. The relevant limitation is scope: SteamOS is not identical to Windows 11, and game compatibility can vary by title, launcher, anti-cheat implementation and required software.

Windows 11 Home

The ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X20 is listed with Windows 11 Home, while Lenovo describes Windows 11 on the Legion Go Gen 2 as providing access beyond Steam with a different interface. Windows can be the better fit when your library spans multiple PC storefronts or when you need conventional Windows applications. It can also require more desktop-style setup on a small touchscreen. That is an interface trade-off, not a measured performance difference.

How to audit your own library

  1. List the games you actually play. Separate Steam titles from games tied to other launchers, subscriptions or publisher accounts.
  2. Mark platform-sensitive games. Note anti-cheat, always-online requirements, third-party launchers, controller support and any Windows-only utilities.
  3. Check each title for the target operating system. Do not assume that a game’s availability on PC means an identical handheld experience.
  4. Decide how much setup you will tolerate. SteamOS emphasizes a console-like path; Windows offers broader PC software access but may involve more desktop interaction.
  5. Recheck after choosing a model. Updates, game patches and launcher policies can change compatibility.

Portability, controls and ergonomics

Handheld comfort is important, but the available specifications do not provide a direct weight comparison, grip measurement, control-quality ranking or independently measured comfort result for these devices. Screen size alone cannot tell you how easy a device is to carry, hold or use for a two-hour session.

Before buying, inspect reputable hands-on coverage of the exact model and region. Pay particular attention to weight, grip shape, stick and button placement, fan noise, heat around the controls, screen glare, sleep-and-resume behavior and how easily you can reach the power and volume controls. Treat those as separate buying questions rather than assuming that a newer processor or larger battery solves them.

A practical buying process

  1. Set the platform requirement. Choose SteamOS-first if your library is predominantly Steam and you want a console-like interface. Choose Windows if access to broader PC software is essential.
  2. Set the display requirement. Pick the Legion Go Gen 2 when the 8.8-inch OLED size is the priority. Pick the Steam Deck OLED for its 7.4-inch 1280×800 HDR OLED format. Pick the ASUS model when the listed 7.4-inch 1920×1080 OLED at 120Hz is the target.
  3. Set the battery expectation. Use the published Wh figures as capacity references only. The Steam Deck’s 3–12-hour estimate is content-dependent; no equivalent runtime claim is established here for the 80Wh ASUS or MSI configurations.
  4. Check storage and memory. The Steam Deck OLED is listed in 512GB and 1TB variants. The ASUS listing specifies 24GB memory and 1TB storage. Confirm the MSI and Lenovo configuration you are actually buying.
  5. Check ports and docking. If two Thunderbolt 4 ports are important, verify that you are purchasing the MSI Claw 8 AI+ A2VM or a regional model with the same documented ports.
  6. Verify price and availability locally. ASUS’s $1,299.99 figure was a US listing at research time. Valve’s OLED prices and stock are volatile, and the available material does not establish a matching current Lenovo or MSI price.
  7. Read the return policy. A return window is valuable for checking fit, screen readability, wireless behavior and your own game library without treating a specification sheet as a hands-on test.

Common buying mistakes

Comparing battery capacity as if it were runtime

Wh is not hours. Use capacity to understand the design, then seek comparable same-game testing for endurance.

Turning display numbers into a quality verdict

An 8.8-inch panel, a 1920×1080 resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate answer different questions. Decide whether you value physical size, pixel count, refresh capability or OLED characteristics.

Which alternative should you buy?

Buy the Steam Deck OLED if

Your priority is SteamOS 3 and a controller-oriented, console-like experience, and a 7.4-inch 1280×800 HDR OLED screen is suitable for your games. Confirm compatibility for any title that relies on a non-Steam launcher, Windows-only software or a particular anti-cheat system.

Buy the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X20 if

You want a premium Windows handheld with the published combination of a 7.4-inch 1920×1080 OLED panel at 120Hz, 24GB LPDDR5X, 1TB SSD and 80Wh battery, and the current local price fits your budget. Recheck the US listing or your regional equivalent because the researched $1,299.99 price can change.

Buy the MSI Claw 8 AI+ A2VM if

Two Thunderbolt 4 ports and an 80Wh battery are central to your handheld-and-dock setup, and you are prepared to verify the exact country configuration. Do not assume that every Claw 8 AI+ listing has the A2VM specification.

Stay with the Legion Go Gen 2 if

The 8.8-inch OLED display is more important to you than moving to a smaller 7.4-inch panel, and Windows access beyond Steam matches your library. The alternatives are not automatically upgrades; they exchange screen size, interface or documented connectivity for different priorities.
