If clear speech is your priority, the Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold is the strongest evidence-backed alternative to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold line. Bandicoot Lab identified it as the clearest-voiced phone in its measurements, including foldables. Its result is specifically about dialogue intelligibility—not a claim that it is the loudest or richest-sounding foldable.
The same test recorded 72.8 dBA maximum output, 7.8% average distortion at maximum volume, and limited bass. Those figures explain the trade-off: podcasts, calls and dialogue-heavy video should be easy to follow, while music and films may sound thin at high volume.
Which foldable phone has the best speakers?
For a foldable chosen primarily for understandable voices, the Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold is the safest recommendation supported by current measurements. Bandicoot Lab’s 2026 testing singled it out for voice and dialogue clarity among the phones it measured, including foldable models.

Samsung’s current Galaxy Z Fold models have a different issue: physical speaker placement can affect stereo separation and make the speakers easier to cover when the large screen is opened in landscape. The Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra is aimed at productivity and has an 8-inch folding display, but an independent review described its sound as safe rather than exceptional and warned that its side-facing speakers can be blocked in landscape.
No source in the available material provides a standardized, apples-to-apples acoustic ranking of every current foldable. The recommendations below therefore stay within the dimensions that have actually been measured or reported.
What “better built-in speakers” should mean
Speaker quality is not a single score. Decide which of these characteristics matters most before choosing a phone.
Recommended Free Tools
Dialogue clarity
Clarity determines whether consonants and words remain intelligible without repeatedly rewinding. It is the most relevant measure for podcasts, speech-heavy streaming, video calls and news clips. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold has the clearest documented advantage in this category.
Maximum loudness
Loudness matters when you are listening across a room, outdoors or near background noise. It does not guarantee good sound: a phone can become harsh or congested as its amplifier approaches maximum output. The Pixel’s measured maximum was 72.8 dBA in Bandicoot Lab’s test.
Distortion at high volume
Distortion is the roughness, rasp or breakup that appears when a small speaker is pushed hard. The Pixel recorded 7.8% average distortion at maximum volume in that test, so its clearest speech performance should not be confused with clean, effortless playback at the top of the volume slider.
Bass extension
Bass gives music, sound effects and film scores weight. The available guide describes foldable-phone bass as thin and specifically notes limited bass on the Pixel 10 Pro Fold. If low-end impact is more important than speech intelligibility, you should treat the Pixel’s clarity lead as only one part of the decision.

Speaker placement and stereo separation
Two speakers can still create a weak stereo image if they sit too close together or end up on one side of the phone in the orientation you use. Placement also affects whether your palms cover an opening. This is particularly important on a large unfolded screen, where landscape viewing is common.
Foldable speaker comparison
| Model | Documented speaker evidence | Best interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold | Bandicoot Lab calls it the clearest-voiced phone measured, including foldables; 72.8 dBA maximum output; 7.8% average distortion at maximum; limited bass. | Best-supported choice for dialogue and podcasts, with compromises at maximum volume and in low frequencies. |
| Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 | Android Authority reports that both speakers are on the cover-display half. When the phone is opened in landscape, they sit along one side. | Convenient for Samsung’s immersive-viewing use cases, but unfolded landscape can reduce left-right separation. |
| Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra | Samsung positions it around productivity and an 8-inch folding display. What Hi-Fi? rated its sound four stars, called it safe but unremarkable, and noted that side-facing speakers can be blocked in landscape. | A productivity-first option; do not select it solely for a speaker upgrade. |
| Original Google Pixel Fold | Android Central presents it as a wide-screen alternative and discusses a low used-market price, but the captured material does not establish a speaker advantage. | Consider only if its other features or used pricing fit; the evidence does not support it as a sound-focused winner. |
| OnePlus Open and Pixel 9 Pro Fold | An Android Authority alternatives article treats both as general Galaxy Z Fold alternatives, but does not document a speaker-quality advantage. That article predates the 2026 Samsung lineup. | Do not infer better built-in speakers from their status as general foldable alternatives. |
Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold: the clearest choice for speech
Why it leads for dialogue
The Pixel’s meaningful advantage is intelligibility. Bandicoot Lab’s guide identifies it as the clearest phone for voice and dialogue in its tested group, explicitly including foldables. That makes it the most defensible recommendation when your listening consists mainly of spoken content rather than bass-heavy music.
Clearer voices can reduce the need to raise the volume, which is useful in quiet rooms where excessive loudness is distracting. It also helps when a program mixes quiet speech with louder effects, although the available test does not quantify performance for any particular streaming service or show.
What the measurements say
- Maximum output: 72.8 dBA in Bandicoot Lab’s 2026 test.
- Average distortion: 7.8% at maximum volume in that test.
- Bass: Described as limited, consistent with the broader observation that foldable-phone bass can be thin.
The numbers belong to that test setup and should not be treated as a universal loudness or distortion rating for every unit, region or software version. They are useful because they show why the phone can excel at speech while falling short as an all-purpose music speaker.

Who should buy it
- People who listen to podcasts, audiobooks, interviews and dialogue-heavy video without headphones.
- Users who value understandable voices more than cinematic bass.
- Anyone willing to accept moderate maximum loudness and audible strain when the volume is pushed to its limit.
Who should look elsewhere
If your priority is powerful low end, party-level volume or a wide stereo field for films, the available evidence does not show the Pixel winning those categories. Choose it for its documented clarity, not for an unproven all-round speaker crown.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8: placement is the main concern
How the layout affects landscape viewing
Android Authority reports that both Galaxy Z Fold8 speakers are located on the cover-display half. With the phone opened horizontally, both sound sources therefore sit along one side of the unfolded screen instead of one on each side of the viewing area.
That arrangement can weaken left-right separation. Dialogue may remain understandable, but music and film effects are less likely to feel naturally spread across the screen. Your hands can also change the result if they cover the edge where the speakers are positioned.

What Samsung’s positioning tells you
Samsung’s 2026 guide presents the Galaxy Z Fold8 as a device for immersive content, reading and gaming. Those use cases benefit from the large inner screen, but the official positioning is not an acoustic measurement and does not prove superior speaker performance.
If you already prefer the Fold8’s software, cameras, durability or multitasking, its speaker layout may be an acceptable compromise. It is not, however, a demonstrated upgrade over the Pixel for clear dialogue.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra: large-screen productivity, not a sound-first upgrade
What is established
Samsung emphasizes productivity and an 8-inch folding main display for the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra. What Hi-Fi? gave its sound four stars and characterized it as safe but unremarkable. The review also warns that side-facing speakers can be easy to block while using the phone in landscape.
How to interpret the review
A four-star independent review is a qualitative judgment, not a laboratory comparison with the Pixel 10 Pro Fold. “Safe but unremarkable” means the Ultra should perform adequately for ordinary viewing, but the cited material does not identify a specific speaker strength that would justify buying it for audio.
The Ultra can make sense if the 8-inch workspace and productivity features are your reason for choosing a foldable. Treat its speakers as an adequate part of that package, not as the reason to upgrade from another model.
Why the other alternatives are not sound-focused winners
Original Google Pixel Fold
The original Pixel Fold remains relevant as a possible used-market purchase. Android Central describes it as a wide-screen alternative to the Galaxy Z Fold8 and notes low used-market pricing. The available passage does not establish better speaker clarity, louder output, lower distortion or stronger bass, so there is no evidence-based reason to choose it specifically for built-in audio.
OnePlus Open
OnePlus Open appears in Android Authority’s 2025 list of general Galaxy Z Fold alternatives. That article does not document a speaker-quality advantage, and it predates Samsung’s 2026 models. Its inclusion as a foldable alternative should not be converted into an audio recommendation.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose by listening habit
Mostly podcasts, calls and spoken video
Choose the Pixel 10 Pro Fold. Its measured clarity is the only direct, foldable-relevant advantage established in the available evidence. Keep the 72.8 dBA maximum and 7.8% maximum-volume distortion in mind if you often listen in noisy places.
Mostly films and music on the unfolded screen
Pay attention to physical placement before looking at marketing language. The Fold8’s cover-half layout can reduce separation in landscape, while the Ultra’s side-facing speakers can be blocked. The available sources do not identify a current foldable with both clearly superior bass and a wider measured stereo image, so a blanket “best for movies” verdict would go beyond the evidence.
Productivity first, audio second
The Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra’s 8-inch display and productivity positioning may outweigh its unremarkable speaker assessment if your main task is document work or multitasking. In that case, accept the audio as adequate rather than expecting a speaker-led upgrade.
Shopping used
The original Pixel Fold may be inexpensive on the used market, but price alone does not establish speaker quality. Check the physical speaker openings for damage and listen to speech before buying; the cited coverage provides no sound advantage to justify a premium.
How to evaluate a foldable’s speakers yourself
Because the available coverage does not provide one standardized test across all current models, use the same short routine whenever you can handle a phone in person.
- Test speech first. Play a podcast or interview with clear consonants and several speakers. Listen at a normal level, then raise the volume gradually. Note whether words remain distinct before music or effects become loud.
- Check maximum-volume behavior. Use the same clip on each phone. Listen for rasp, buzzing or vocal hardness near the top of the slider; these are practical signs of the distortion measured on the Pixel at maximum output.
- Switch between portrait and landscape. Open the phone fully, rotate it, and hold it as you would while watching. Observe whether both speakers remain unobstructed and whether sound appears to come from one side.
- Cover each edge briefly. Place your hands in a normal viewing grip, not an artificial test grip. If the sound suddenly dulls, the speaker openings are easy to block in that orientation.
- Use a music track with bass and vocals. Listen for the difference between clear midrange voices and low-frequency weight. A phone can win the first test while sounding thin in the second.
- Compare at matched loudness. A louder phone can seem better for a few seconds. Reduce the louder device until both are similarly loud, then judge clarity, harshness and stereo placement.
Important limits on the current comparison
- The Pixel figures come from Bandicoot Lab’s 2026 test and describe one measurement setup, not every software version or hardware unit.
- The 72.8 dBA and 7.8% distortion values apply to maximum volume; they do not predict performance at normal listening levels.
- Descriptions of the Fold8 and Fold8 Ultra concern speaker location and independent listening impressions, not a shared laboratory protocol.
- No current source in the available material supplies complete bass, loudness, distortion and stereo measurements for every model listed.
- Prices, stock and regional availability can change, and the cited material does not verify current retail listings.
Bottom line for a Galaxy Z Fold speaker alternative
Buy the Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold if your definition of better speakers is speech that is easier to understand. It has the clearest documented voice performance among the tested foldables, but its moderate 72.8 dBA peak, 7.8% maximum-volume distortion and limited bass prevent an all-purpose audio recommendation.
Choose the Galaxy Z Fold8 or Fold8 Ultra for their screens and software when those advantages matter more than speaker design. The Fold8’s cover-half placement can weaken landscape separation, and the Ultra’s side-facing speakers can be blocked; neither is supported here as a clear sound upgrade. The original Pixel Fold, OnePlus Open and Pixel 9 Pro Fold remain general alternatives, not evidence-backed choices for better built-in speakers.
