For most travelers, the 8BitDo Micro is the closest alternative to the CRKD Atom+. It is smaller and lighter, lasts up to 12 hours, and works with Switch, Switch 2 and Android, but it replaces analog controls and vibration with a simpler digital layout. Choose the 8BitDo Zero 2 when minimum weight matters most, GameSir Pocket Taco when you want a phone-clamp handheld shape, or a Razer Kishi V2 or Backbone One when your phone is the main screen and a full-size layout matters more than pocketability.
What the CRKD Atom+ does, and what an alternative must preserve
The CRKD Atom+ is a 90 mm by 48 mm mini Bluetooth controller for Switch 2 and Switch, PC and PC handhelds, mobile devices, tablets and selected smart TVs. Its feature set is closer to a conventional modern gamepad than to a keychain controller: it has two TMR thumbsticks, triggers, shoulder buttons, vibration, motion controls, programmable buttons and a rechargeable USB-C battery.
That combination creates the central trade-off. A genuinely pocket-sized replacement can be smaller, lighter or easier to carry, but it usually gives up at least one of the Atom+ controls. The alternatives fall into three distinct groups:

- Pocket substitutes: 8BitDo Micro and 8BitDo Zero 2 are standalone Bluetooth pads designed for very small bags, pockets or key rings.
- Phone-clamp controllers: GameSir Pocket Taco adds a vertical handheld shape around a phone while remaining wireless.
- Phone-first controllers: Razer Kishi V2 and Backbone One are larger accessories whose portability depends on the handset and case you use.
Before choosing, decide whether the controller is a backup for short sessions or your primary control device for long play. That single decision matters more than a few millimetres of length.

Published dimensions are not measured in an identical way by every manufacturer, so use them as packing guidance rather than as a promise that one shape will feel smaller in your hand. The Micro is the clearest dimensional and weight alternative to the Atom+, while the Zero 2 wins on mass alone.
8BitDo Micro: the closest pocket substitute
Why it is the default recommendation
8BitDo describes Micro as a pocket-sized Bluetooth controller. At 72 × 40.7 × 14.1 mm and 24.8 g, it is substantially easier to stow than the 90 mm by 48 mm Atom+. Its rated play time is up to 12 hours, and a full charge is specified as one to two hours. For a travel bag, that means less bulk without accepting the shorter eight-hour rating of the Zero 2.
It also covers the two current Switch generations and Android. Keyboard mode extends its use to iOS and iPadOS, macOS and Windows, but that mode is a different input model from a console gamepad. A reader buying it for a computer should confirm that the game supports keyboard bindings before treating it as a general PC-controller replacement.

Micro is positioned for 2D games. Its official feature list does not include analog sticks, vibration, motion sensing, NFC or console wake. That omission is the reason it can stay so small, but it also defines the games for which it works well. Platformers, puzzle games, turn-based titles and retro libraries can map naturally to its digital controls. Games that expect an analog camera, analog movement, motion aiming, rumble feedback or NFC features cannot reproduce the Atom+ experience through Micro.
Who should buy it
- Choose Micro for a standalone controller that disappears into a pocket and still supports Switch 2.
- Choose it as a backup for hotel, airport or commuter play where 2D games dominate.
- Do not choose it as the only controller for a library built around dual-stick 3D games or motion features.
8BitDo Zero 2: the lightest keychain option
Where Zero 2 leads
Zero 2 weighs 20.7 g, making it 4.1 g lighter than Micro. It measures 73 × 36.5 × 14.7 mm and is rated for eight hours from its rechargeable battery. That is an exceptionally low carry weight for a controller, and its shape makes sense when the pad spends most of its life attached to a key ring, in a jacket pocket or in a small accessory pouch.
It supports Switch, Windows and Android over Bluetooth and provides X-input, D-input, Switch and keyboard modes. Those modes give it more configuration flexibility than its size suggests, especially for simple computer games and emulators that accept digital input.

Why it is not a Micro replacement for everyone
The Zero 2 is best for simple or retro controls. Like Micro, it is not a dual-analog gamepad, so it is a poor match for games that require simultaneous character movement and camera control. Its eight-hour rating is also four hours below Micro’s published figure. That difference is meaningful on a trip with no convenient charging point, although both controllers are intended to be recharged rather than run on disposable cells.

GameSir Pocket Taco: a vertical phone gamepad
What the format changes
Pocket Taco takes a different approach from Micro and Zero 2. Instead of being a tiny free-floating pad, it clamps onto a phone and creates a vertical, Game Boy-like handheld arrangement. The published dimensions are 78 × 70.9 × 20.7 mm, its weight is 62.2 g and its battery capacity is 600 mAh.
The larger footprint is deliberate: the clamp provides a second surface for the phone and gives the controls a handheld relationship to the screen. It is therefore easier to use as a phone gaming rig than as a keychain controller, but it occupies more room in a pocket or small pouch.
Why wireless matters for travel
Pocket Taco connects over Bluetooth rather than relying on a phone port. That avoids choosing between a Lightning and USB-C connector and makes the design more tolerant of phone cases. You still need to check that your handset fits the clamp, but you are not committing to a connector-specific model.
GameSir lists compatibility with Android, iOS, PC and Nintendo Switch. The manufacturer does not state a play-time figure in the supplied specifications, so the 600 mAh capacity should not be converted into an assumed number of hours.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBest use
Pick Pocket Taco when the phone is your screen and you prefer a vertical handheld feel over the smallest possible packed dimensions. It is also the most natural choice in this group for someone who wants a single accessory that can move between phone play and a Switch or PC, provided the wireless pairing mode required by the target device is supported.

Razer Kishi V2: phone-first for longer sessions
Kishi V2 is aimed at direct phone play rather than at being a tiny spare controller. Its conventional layout is a better fit for readers who want the controls of a larger gamepad around a handset and are prepared to carry a phone-mounted accessory.
The listed Android compatibility includes Samsung Galaxy S23 and Google Pixel 6, 7 and 8 families. That list is a compatibility guide, not a guarantee for every Android phone: dimensions, USB-port placement, camera geometry and case thickness can still matter. If your phone is outside those families, verify the exact model before buying.
Kishi V2 makes sense when the phone is your primary gaming screen and sessions are long enough that the small buttons of a pocket pad become tiring. It is not the right answer to the question “What is the smallest standalone Bluetooth controller?” Its role is to provide a more conventional phone-controller experience, not to compete with Micro or Zero 2 for pocket volume.
Backbone One: portability depends on the handset and case
Backbone One belongs in the phone-mounted category, but it requires the most careful physical check before a trip. Backbone’s support documentation warns that phone-case thickness and camera bumps can prevent a handset from fitting. A controller that fits a bare phone may therefore fail once a protective case is installed.
Check before packing
- Identify the exact phone model, not just the operating-system family.
- Measure or confirm the case thickness you will actually use while traveling.
- Check whether the camera bump occupies the area where the controller grips the phone.
- Test the complete phone-and-case combination before relying on it as your only gamepad.
Backbone One is a reasonable choice when a phone-mounted layout is more important than universal pocket compatibility. It is a poor impulse purchase if you cannot verify the handset and case together.
Standalone Bluetooth or phone-mounted: the decision that matters most
| If your priority is… | Choose… | Because… |
|---|---|---|
| Smallest practical standalone replacement for Atom+ | 8BitDo Micro | It combines 72 × 40.7 × 14.1 mm dimensions, 24.8 g weight and up to 12 hours of play. |
| Lowest weight | 8BitDo Zero 2 | Its 20.7 g weight is the lowest published figure in this group. |
| Switch 2 with a tiny digital pad | 8BitDo Micro | Switch 2 support is listed, while the Zero 2 listing covers Switch but does not state Switch 2. |
| Phone screen plus a vertical handheld grip | GameSir Pocket Taco | The wireless clamp creates a Game Boy-like arrangement and avoids phone-port selection. |
| Conventional controls for long phone sessions | Razer Kishi V2 | It is designed around compatible Android phones rather than extreme miniaturization. |
| Phone-mounted accessory with a case-fit check | Backbone One | Its support guidance makes case thickness and camera-bump clearance essential checks. |
| Full modern controls in a small standalone body | CRKD Atom+ | It retains dual sticks, triggers, vibration, motion controls and programmable buttons. |
Controls: digital travel pad versus full gamepad
The Atom+ is the only product in this comparison whose published description combines dual analog sticks, triggers, shoulders, vibration and motion controls. That matters for 3D action, racing, shooters and any game that uses analog pressure or a second stick for camera movement.

Micro and Zero 2 are better understood as digital travel pads. Their value is not a miniature version of every Atom+ function; it is that they make a subset of games convenient to carry. A digital controller can be more reliable than an undersized analog stick for a 2D platformer, while being fundamentally unsuitable for a game that expects two continuous axes.
Pocket Taco, Kishi V2 and Backbone One prioritize the relationship between a phone and its controls. Their larger formats can be more comfortable for phone sessions, but none should be selected solely from a dimension number. Grip shape, the position of the phone’s weight and the fit of the case determine whether the accessory feels stable.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Battery and charging for travel
Micro has the clearest endurance advantage among the tiny standalone options: up to 12 hours with a one-to-two-hour charge. Zero 2 is rated for eight hours. The original CRKD ATOM, which is smaller than Atom+, is also rated for eight to 10 hours with a two-hour charge, but it is a different model and should not be treated as the Atom+ battery specification.
Pocket Taco lists a 600 mAh battery but no play-time figure. Atom+ lists a rechargeable USB-C battery but no play-time figure in the supplied product description. Kishi V2 and Backbone One have no battery figure established in the available information. Do not infer endurance from capacity alone: controller power draw, wireless mode and phone use all change real-world runtime.
Common buying mistakes
Buying a digital pad for an analog-heavy library
Check the games you will actually play. If they need dual sticks, analog triggers, rumble or motion, Micro and Zero 2 are compromises rather than replacements. Keep Atom+ or choose a phone-mounted format with the controls your games require.

Ignoring the phone case
A phone-mounted controller can become unusable when the case is too thick or the camera bump collides with the grip. Test the complete setup for Backbone One, and verify the clamp fit for Pocket Taco before travel.
Using keyboard mode as if it were a gamepad mode
Micro’s keyboard mode extends compatibility to iOS, iPadOS, macOS and Windows, while Zero 2 offers keyboard, X-input and D-input modes. Keyboard mode sends key-style inputs; it does not add analog sticks, vibration or console features that the hardware does not have.
Choosing by packed dimensions alone
A 20.7 g controller is easy to carry, but a larger phone-mounted accessory may be the better travel choice if you expect several hours of play. Decide first whether you need a backup controller or a primary control system, then compare size, weight and comfort within that category.
Which alternative should you buy?
Buy the 8BitDo Micro if you want the most balanced pocket substitute: it is lighter and smaller than Atom+, supports Switch 2, and has the longest stated battery life among the tiny standalone options, with the clear limitation of digital-only controls.
Buy the 8BitDo Zero 2 if minimum weight and keychain portability outrank battery life and modern controls. Buy GameSir Pocket Taco if your phone is the screen and a vertical, clamp-on handheld shape is more useful than a free-floating pad. Choose Razer Kishi V2 for a more conventional Android phone-controller experience, and choose Backbone One only after confirming the exact phone-and-case fit.
Keep the CRKD Atom+ when you need its full modern layout. None of the smallest alternatives reproduces its combination of dual TMR sticks, triggers, vibration, motion controls and programmable buttons in a similarly compact standalone body.
