Best overall alternative: choose the Lenovo Legion Go Gen 2 if you want the largest, fastest-refresh OLED screen; choose the MSI Claw 8 AI+ for 32GB of memory and modern connectivity; choose the Steam Deck OLED for a lighter SteamOS experience; and choose the older ROG Ally X only when its discount is substantial. The ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X20 remains the reference point with an 80Wh battery, 24GB RAM, a 1TB SSD and a 7.4-inch 120Hz OLED display, listed at $1,299.99 in the United States.

No independent, apples-to-apples benchmark establishes one of these handhelds as universally fastest. The right replacement depends on screen size, Windows launcher compatibility, memory, ports, weight and the price available in your region.

Quick answer: which handheld should you buy?

  • Pick Lenovo Legion Go Gen 2 for the most expansive OLED viewing area and a 144Hz refresh rate. Its 8.8-inch 1920×1200 panel is the display-first choice, and its detachable controllers suit tabletop play.
  • Pick MSI Claw 8 AI+ A2VM if you need 32GB of memory, Wi-Fi 7 or two Thunderbolt 4 ports for docks, displays and fast storage. It is the most connectivity-focused option, but its listed 795g weight is substantial.
  • Pick Steam Deck OLED if most of your library is on Steam and you prefer SteamOS, a 640g chassis and a simpler console-style interface. TechRadar measured approximately two to eight hours of battery life depending on workload.
  • Pick the ROG Ally X (2024) only when a retailer’s discount makes its older LCD hardware worthwhile. It still gives you broad Windows launcher access, but it does not match the X20’s newer OLED panel or Ryzen AI platform.
  • Stay with the Xbox Ally X20 if you want the combination of an 80Wh battery, 24GB RAM, 1TB PCIe 4.0 storage, OLED HDR and Windows 11 Home without compromising on any one of those categories.

How the main alternatives compare

The table uses manufacturer specifications where available. A battery’s watt-hour rating is capacity, not a promise of runtime; actual play time changes with game load, brightness, frame rate, power limit and software.

Lenovo Legion Go Gen 2: best large-screen OLED alternative

The Legion Go Gen 2 is the clearest answer when the X20’s 7.4-inch display feels too small. Lenovo specifies an 8.8-inch WUXGA panel with a 1920×1200 resolution and a 144Hz refresh rate. The extra diagonal area and 16:10 aspect ratio provide more vertical space for strategy games, RPG interfaces and desktop applications than a 16:9 1080p panel.

Why its display stands out

OLED pixels can switch completely off for deep blacks, and Lenovo rates this panel for 100% DCI-P3 coverage and DisplayHDR True Black 1000. Brightness is listed as 500 nits typical and 1,100 nits peak. Those figures are measured under different conditions, so they should not be treated as a direct brightness victory over the X20’s 600-nit SDR and 1,400-nit HDR claims. The practical advantage is the combination of size, contrast and 144Hz refresh rather than a single peak-number comparison.

Detachable controllers and trade-offs

Detachable controllers let you prop the screen on a table and play from a short distance, a useful arrangement for travel trays or hotel desks. The design also makes the device more flexible as a small Windows tablet. The larger body is less pocketable than the X20, and Lenovo’s cited specifications do not state a weight or storage configuration. Check those details on the exact regional SKU before ordering.

Who should choose it

Choose the Legion Go Gen 2 when screen immersion and tabletop flexibility matter more than carrying the smallest device. It is also the natural choice for buyers who want Windows 11 and Xbox Game Pass support but do not need the X20’s 80Wh battery or 24GB memory specifically.

MSI Claw 8 AI+: best for memory and connectivity

MSI’s Claw 8 AI+ A2VM targets users who treat a handheld as a compact PC. It offers up to an Intel Core Ultra 7 Series 2 processor, Intel Arc 140V graphics and 32GB of LPDDR5x-8533 memory. That memory ceiling is the highest listed here and gives more headroom for games that stream large assets, browser tabs, chat clients or recording software at the same time.

Ports that reduce dongle dependence

Two Thunderbolt 4 ports can connect to high-speed storage, displays and docks, while Wi-Fi 7 is designed for newer compatible wireless networks. MSI also lists a microSD reader and an 80Wh battery. Those features make the Claw 8 AI+ attractive if you move large game libraries, use an external monitor or want one port available while another is occupied by power or accessories.

Screen and physical cost

The 8-inch 1920×1200 touchscreen supports variable refresh from 48Hz to 120Hz. Variable refresh can help reduce tearing and avoid forcing a game to render at a fixed rate, but the benefit depends on the title and graphics settings. The listed 795g weight is the highest stated figure in this comparison, so grip comfort and a supporting stand matter more than they do with the 640g Steam Deck OLED.

Who should choose it

Buy the Claw 8 AI+ when memory capacity and connectivity are requirements rather than nice-to-have features. If your priority is the lightest handheld or the deepest SteamOS integration, its extra mass and Windows-oriented setup are less compelling.

Steam Deck OLED: best SteamOS and value-oriented alternative

The Steam Deck OLED is the most different alternative because its appeal is the operating environment as much as the hardware. SteamOS presents a console-style interface built around Steam, with desktop mode available when you need it. That focus reduces the launcher juggling common on a Windows handheld, but games or stores outside Steam may require additional setup and compatibility checks.

Weight and tested battery range

At 640g, the Steam Deck OLED is the lightest device in this group with a stated weight. TechRadar’s 2026 roundup reports approximately two to eight hours of battery life, depending on workload. A demanding modern game at high brightness can approach the lower end; lighter or capped-frame-rate workloads can run longer. The range is a specialist test result, not a guarantee for every title.

Storage choices

Valve offers 512GB and 1TB versions. Select the larger model if your library contains several large games and you do not want to manage installs frequently; select 512GB if you are comfortable rotating games or adding storage through supported expansion options. Exact pricing and stock vary by region, so verify the current store listing before treating it as the cheaper purchase.

Who should choose it

Choose Steam Deck OLED when Steam is your primary storefront, a lighter chassis matters and you value a tightly integrated handheld interface over Windows’ broad compatibility. It is not the direct choice for someone who needs every Windows launcher working with minimal configuration.

ROG Ally X (2024): best discounted Windows fallback

The ROG Ally X remains relevant as a value alternative when retailers clear older inventory. ASUS describes it as a Windows handheld with a larger battery and storage configuration than the original Ally, improved controls and support for Steam, Xbox Game Pass, Epic and GOG libraries.

What you give up versus the X20

The Ally X uses older hardware and an LCD screen, whereas the X20 adds the Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme platform, a 7.4-inch OLED panel and higher-end HDR features. ASUS’s guide does not establish a current price, exact battery capacity or detailed display figures for the Ally X, so compare the actual listing and warranty rather than assuming every discounted unit has identical specifications.

When the discount is sensible

Consider it if you want broad Windows launcher access and the sale price leaves enough budget for a case, charger or storage expansion. If the discounted unit approaches the X20’s $1,299.99 ASUS Store price, the newer OLED display, 24GB memory and 80Wh battery make the X20 easier to justify.

What the X20 offers that alternatives must match

ASUS lists the ROG Xbox Ally X20 (RC74XA) at $1,299.99 in the United States in 2026. Its AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme has eight cores and 16 threads, boosts to 5.0GHz and includes an XDNA NPU rated up to 50 TOPS. The system pairs that processor with 24GB LPDDR5X memory and a 1TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD.

The 7.4-inch 1920×1080 OLED touchscreen runs at 120Hz, with 600-nit SDR and 1,400-nit HDR brightness ratings, Dolby Vision and FreeSync Premium Pro. Connectivity includes Wi-Fi 6E, USB 4, USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C and a microSD Express slot. At 756g, it is heavier than the Steam Deck OLED but lighter than the Claw 8 AI+’s listed 795g. ASUS quotes an 80Wh, four-cell battery and a bundled two-month Xbox Game Pass Premium offer for eligible markets.

Choose by the feature that matters most

If OLED size and contrast come first

Start with the Legion Go Gen 2. Its 8.8-inch 144Hz OLED is the largest and fastest-refresh OLED specification in this group. Choose the X20 instead if you need a smaller chassis, higher stated HDR brightness or its 80Wh battery and 24GB memory combination.

If you run memory-heavy games or multitask

The Claw 8 AI+’s up-to-32GB configuration is the clear specification leader. The X20’s 24GB remains substantial, while the Legion’s and Steam Deck OLED’s cited configurations do not provide a directly comparable memory figure.

If you carry the handheld every day

The Steam Deck OLED’s 640g stated weight minimizes load. The X20 is 756g and the Claw 8 AI+ is 795g; Lenovo’s cited material does not state the Legion Go Gen 2’s weight. Add the charger, case and any dock when judging a travel kit, not just the handheld.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you need several PC storefronts

Windows devices provide the most direct route to Steam, Xbox Game Pass, Epic and GOG. The X20 and Ally X explicitly support Windows libraries, and the Legion Go Gen 2 lists Windows 11 and Xbox Game Pass support. Steam Deck OLED is best when Steam is your center of gravity; non-Steam stores can require extra configuration.

If you connect displays and storage

The Claw 8 AI+’s two Thunderbolt 4 ports and Wi-Fi 7 are the strongest stated connectivity package. The X20 offers USB 4, USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C, Wi-Fi 6E and microSD Express. Port counts and standards for the Legion Go Gen 2 and Steam Deck OLED are not established in the cited specifications, so inspect the exact model page before buying a dock.

Battery life: how to compare the numbers honestly

Capacity is not runtime. An 80Wh battery can last less time than a 74Wh battery if the processor, display brightness, refresh rate or game load consumes more power. Manufacturer capacity figures also do not use a common testing loop.

For a useful personal comparison, test the same game at the same resolution, brightness, frame-rate cap and power mode. Record the time from 100% charge until the handheld reaches your chosen low-battery threshold. Keep Wi-Fi, audio and background launchers consistent. The Steam Deck OLED’s published two-to-eight-hour range is the only workload-dependent runtime statistic supplied here; no equivalent controlled runtime ranking is established for the other models.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Screen, performance and comfort checks before purchase

  1. Confirm the panel you are actually buying. Check diagonal size, resolution, OLED or LCD type, refresh range and brightness for the regional SKU. Do not assume an older model shares the X20’s OLED HDR specifications.
  2. Decide on a power target. Higher power limits can improve frame rate but reduce battery life and increase fan noise. Compare devices at the same limit instead of treating processor names as a guaranteed performance order.
  3. Check grip and controls in person if possible. A 795g handheld may feel comfortable with a broad grip and uncomfortable in a narrow one. Detachable controllers change the Legion Go Gen 2’s tabletop use but do not make its travel footprint small.
  4. Plan storage before installing games. The X20 includes 1TB, Steam Deck OLED versions are 512GB or 1TB, and the Claw 8 AI+’s cited specification does not state storage capacity. Confirm whether your preferred model has a replaceable SSD or relies on a microSD card for expansion.

Windows setup checklist for the X20, Legion Go and Ally X

  1. Install Windows updates and the manufacturer’s graphics, chipset and controller updates before evaluating game performance.
  2. Open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display and select the refresh rate that matches your target frame rate. Use a lower rate when conserving power matters more than animation smoothness.
  3. In Settings > System > Power & battery, select a power mode appropriate to either plugged-in play or portable use. Record the selected mode when comparing battery tests.
  4. Install only the launchers you use, then disable unnecessary startup programs and overlays. Extra background services consume memory and can complicate troubleshooting.
  5. Run one representative game, monitor frame pacing and temperatures, and change one setting at a time. Do not infer a universal ranking from a single title.

Steam Deck OLED setup checklist

  1. Update SteamOS before downloading a large library so firmware and compatibility improvements are applied first.
  2. Check each game’s Steam compatibility information and community reports, especially for anti-cheat or launcher requirements.
  3. Use the performance overlay to establish a frame-rate cap and power profile that suit the game rather than leaving every title at maximum consumption.
  4. Keep shader-cache and game files organized, and reserve free storage for updates. Choose the 1TB model if frequent uninstalling would be more disruptive than the additional purchase cost in your region.

Accessories and ownership details that affect the decision

  • USB-C PD charger: verify the required power rating and included charger for the exact model. A phone charger may power the device slowly or fail to sustain gaming load.
  • Dock: match the dock’s video standard, USB bandwidth and power delivery to the handheld. The Claw 8 AI+’s Thunderbolt 4 ports and the X20’s USB 4 support make high-speed docks particularly relevant, but compatibility still depends on the dock.
  • microSD card: check whether the handheld uses a standard reader or microSD Express and buy a card that matches it. Game load times and capacity depend on the card, not only the handheld.
  • Case and stand: a rigid case protects controls during travel; a stand is especially useful for the Legion Go Gen 2 in detachable-controller mode.
  • Warranty and service: confirm regional coverage, return windows and parts availability before importing a model. Service terms can outweigh a small specification advantage.

Bottom-line buying decisions

The Lenovo Legion Go Gen 2 is the best alternative for a larger OLED canvas and 144Hz play. The MSI Claw 8 AI+ is the practical workstation-like handheld, with 32GB memory, Wi-Fi 7 and two Thunderbolt 4 ports. The Steam Deck OLED is the lightest, most SteamOS-focused choice and the only option here with a published two-to-eight-hour workload-dependent runtime range. The ROG Ally X is a sensible Windows fallback only at a meaningful discount.

If none of those priorities outweigh the X20’s balanced package, the X20 remains the more complete premium Windows option: 24GB RAM, 1TB storage, an 80Wh battery, a 7.4-inch 120Hz OLED display and current Ryzen AI hardware for $1,299.99 on ASUS’s 2026 US product listing.
