If you want a handheld for Nintendo 3DS emulation, the closest alternatives to Anbernic’s newly announced RG DDS are the AYN Thor and AYANEO Pocket DS: both use a two-screen layout, and a 2026 comparison guide identifies them as stronger 3DS-focused options. If you would rather have one device for a wider range of Android games, consider the single-screen Retroid Pocket 6, accepting that DS-style games lose the convenience of two physical displays.
The RG DDS’s published specifications describe its hardware, not how well it runs games. Anbernic’s October 10, 2026 announcement does not confirm a price, release date, or regional availability, so it is not yet possible to make a firm value or availability comparison.
What the RG DDS offers—and what is still unknown
Anbernic describes the RG DDS as a clamshell handheld with two IPS displays: an approximately 4.7-inch upper screen at 1200 × 720 and an approximately 4-inch lower screen at 960 × 720. The company says each screen scales its corresponding original 3DS display to three times the pixels in each dimension while preserving aspect ratio. That is a translated paraphrase of Anbernic’s Japanese announcement, not an independent measurement or performance test. Anbernic’s October 10, 2026 announcement also lists a Qualcomm Snapdragon G2 Gen 2, active cooling with an internal fan, a 6000mAh battery, two analog sticks, a D-pad, ABXY buttons, and an integrated retractable stylus.

Choose a dual-screen clamshell if layout matters most
AYN Thor: the closer match for a two-screen setup
The AYN Thor is the most direct alternative in this group if you want a clamshell and two physical displays. Held Games describes its screens as AMOLED and identifies it as a strong DS/3DS option, while listing a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. Those are the guide’s descriptions; they do not establish that every 3DS game runs well. Confirm the current model revision and game-specific compatibility evidence before treating it as a reliable substitute for original hardware.

AYANEO Pocket DS: larger displays, less emphasis on portability and cost
Held Games frames the AYANEO Pocket DS as a powerful, large-screen dual-display device, but also calls it heavy and expensive. It makes the most sense if spacious screens matter more to you than carrying weight or keeping the purchase price down. Exact current specifications and price are not established here, so compare a live listing before deciding whether the larger-format design is worth its trade-offs.

Retroid Pocket 6: versatility with a two-screen compromise
The Retroid Pocket 6 is the option to consider when you want a general-purpose Android handheld and can do without a clamshell. The cited guide says it handles DS and 3DS emulation, but its widescreen panel is not shaped like two stacked screens: a stacked layout can make each game screen small or leave black bars. Whether that compromise is acceptable depends on the games and display arrangement you prefer.

Be careful with announced models and DS-first alternatives
Retroid Pocket Duo models: announcements are not proof of availability
GamesRadar reported an announced $269 price for the Retroid Pocket Duo and described a demo running 3DS games through Azahar. That demonstration does not establish performance across a library, and the report did not give a ship date. The same outlet reported an announced $149 price for the Pocket Duo Lite; Held Games characterizes the Lite as chiefly a DS device with limited 3DS capability. Confirm that either model is actually orderable, and check current compatibility reports, before treating an announcement or demo as a buying recommendation.

Anbernic RG DS: a dual-screen device is not automatically a 3DS device
The RG DS may suit someone who primarily wants a physical dual-screen layout for Nintendo DS games. But Held Games warns that it is not powerful enough for reliable 3DS emulation, so it should not be treated as an equivalent RG DDS alternative for a 3DS-first buyer. Anbernic’s RG DS product listing confirms a physical console and describes bundled accessories; it does not establish the RG DDS’s availability.
How to make a practical choice
- Decide whether two physical screens are essential. If they are, focus on the AYN Thor or AYANEO Pocket DS. If not, the Retroid Pocket 6 offers a broader single-screen Android format.
- Separate 3DS use from DS use. Do not assume that a handheld’s dual-screen design means it can run 3DS games reliably; the cited guide specifically cautions against relying on the RG DS for that purpose.
- Check the games you intend to play. Look for current, game-specific compatibility information for the exact device revision and emulator setup. A chipset specification or a demo does not prove broad library performance.
- Verify the purchase details where you live. Confirm stock, regional price, warranty, shipping, and whether an announced device can actually be ordered. The RG DDS and Retroid Pocket Duo availability are not established by the cited announcements and reports.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Anbernic RG DS a good alternative if I mainly want to play 3DS games?
Not on the evidence cited here. Held Games says the RG DS is not powerful enough for reliable 3DS emulation, so consider the AYN Thor, AYANEO Pocket DS, or a single-screen all-rounder instead, and check current compatibility reports for the games you want to play.
