There are four credible ways to spend less than the $1,999 iPhone Duo. For a book-style foldable, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8, Google Pixel 11 Pro Fold and Motorola Razr Fold each start at $1,899 or $1,899.99. If you want Apple’s chip, services and device continuity without a hinge, the iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at $1,299—$700 less than Duo.
The right choice depends on what attracted you to Duo: a pocket-sized tablet workspace, Apple’s ecosystem, camera reach, or simply a premium phone at a lower price. The comparison below separates list prices from temporary trade-in and carrier offers, and it identifies where each alternative gives up features or changes your daily workflow.
What you are actually comparing with the iPhone Duo
Apple positions iPhone Duo as its first foldable iPhone. It opens to a 7.6-inch inner display and closes around a 5.4-inch outer display, making the inner screen 50 percent larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max display. Duo uses the A20 Pro chip, a dual-battery design, iOS 27 foldable experiences and Split View multitasking. Its rear system has two 48-megapixel Dual Fusion cameras.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe hardware also changes how you use an iPhone. Duo is eSIM-only worldwide, authenticates with Touch ID in the side button rather than Face ID, carries an IP68 rating and is rated for up to 31 hours of inner-screen video playback. Those are Apple specifications, not independent endurance results.

Apple’s advertised trade-in credits, carrier credits and Upgrade financing can reduce the amount paid, but each is conditional and can change with current-term eligibility rules.

First decide whether the hinge matters
Choose a foldable when you will use the larger workspace
A book-style foldable gives you a phone-sized outer screen for quick tasks and a much larger inner screen for reading, documents, maps, media and two-app layouts. The benefit is not just a bigger display; it is the ability to keep two tasks visible without constantly switching apps. That is the workflow Duo’s Split View and the Android alternatives’ split-screen modes are designed to support.
The trade-off is complexity. You carry a two-panel device with a hinge, must learn which apps behave well on the inner display and may need to open the phone for tasks that feel immediate on a conventional handset. Buy a foldable because you have a recurring two-app or large-screen use case, not simply because the specification sheet has a larger number.
Choose the iPhone 18 Pro Max when Apple continuity matters more
The Pro Max keeps a conventional 6.9-inch display. It does not become a tablet, but it also avoids the hinge-based compromises and the Android migration that come with the other three choices. iMessage, FaceTime, Apple Intelligence and continuity with other Apple devices remain central reasons to choose it.
It also saves $700 against Duo at manufacturer list pricing. For an iPhone owner who wants a lower upfront cost, a familiar form factor and a dedicated telephoto camera, that is a more meaningful distinction than the loss of a folding workspace.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8: the closest direct foldable substitute
Galaxy Z Fold8 is the most direct alternative if your priority is a book-style Android foldable with an established platform. The cited configuration starts with 256GB, and storage options extend to 1TB. Its 8-inch inner display is slightly larger than Duo’s 7.6-inch panel, while the 4:3-oriented workspace is suited to documents and side-by-side applications.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Why it fits a work-oriented workflow
Samsung has seven previous generations of book-style foldables behind the platform. That history matters if you want a broader body of foldable-specific app behavior, accessories and user familiarity than a first-generation product can offer. Android multitasking is the central reason to choose it: you can use the large inner screen for two-app layouts and treat the outer display as a normal phone when speed matters.
The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy provides the platform’s high-end processing focus, and the model can be configured with up to 1TB of storage. Samsung rates its 4,800mAh battery for up to 26 hours of video playback. That number is a manufacturer claim measured under Samsung’s conditions, not a result that can be ranked directly against Apple’s or Motorola’s figure.
Who should skip it
Fold8 is not the value choice for someone who will rarely open the inner display. If most of your day is messaging, photography and one-app browsing, the extra hardware is harder to justify than a conventional phone. It also requires moving from Apple’s services and continuity to Android unless you are already comfortable maintaining a mixed ecosystem.
Google Pixel 11 Pro Fold: the Google-first option
Pixel 11 Pro Fold combines an 8-inch inner OLED display with a 6.5-inch outer display. It is the alternative to consider when the large folding screen and Google’s software ecosystem matter more than staying with Apple’s interface and services.

Where its strengths are concentrated
Google emphasizes Android split-screen behavior and its AI ecosystem. That makes the device a natural fit for someone who already relies on Google services and wants those services presented across a larger canvas. The 6.5-inch outer display is also more spacious than Duo’s 5.4-inch cover screen on paper, which can reduce how often you need to unfold the phone for ordinary tasks.

Questions to answer before switching
- Which Apple-only workflows do you use every day, and what Android equivalent would replace each one?
- Do your most-used apps support the inner display’s split-screen layout without awkward scaling?
- Will you use the larger screen for reading, planning or two-app work often enough to outweigh a platform change?
Pixel 11 Pro Fold is best understood as a software-and-display choice. The cited material does not establish independent durability, camera or battery test results, so those should not be inferred from the screen size or the manufacturer’s positioning.
Motorola Razr Fold: the battery and charging choice
Razr Fold has the largest inner display in this group at 8.09 inches. It pairs that panel with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 processor, 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage in the cited configuration.
Why its power hardware stands out
Motorola lists a 6,000mAh battery, more than 43 hours of battery life, up to 80W wired charging and up to 50W wireless charging. Those are manufacturer claims and charging maxima; actual endurance and charging time depend on settings, network conditions, charger compatibility and usage. They should not be compared as if every company used the same test.
Recommended Free Tools
If you frequently travel, work away from outlets or use the inner screen for long sessions, the capacity and charging claims are the main reason to select Razr Fold. The large screen also gives it the most generous workspace by the listed diagonal measurement.
What the numbers do not tell you
A larger battery does not guarantee longer real-world runtime than every rival. Foldable displays, cellular radios, brightness and multitasking can change consumption dramatically. Treat Motorola’s figures as a reason to investigate the model, then look for a return policy that lets you judge endurance against your own routine.
iPhone 18 Pro Max: the lower-cost Apple answer
iPhone 18 Pro Max is the only alternative here that keeps Apple’s operating system and services. Its $1,299 manufacturer starting price is $700 below Duo’s $1,999 starting price, before either phone’s trade-in or carrier incentives.
Rank #4

What you retain
The phone uses the A20 Pro chip, supports Apple Intelligence and integrates with the broader Apple ecosystem. Face ID remains the authentication method. Those points make it the low-friction choice for anyone already invested in iMessage, FaceTime and continuity features across Apple devices.
What you give up
The Pro Max has a conventional 6.9-inch display rather than a folding inner-and-outer arrangement. It cannot provide Duo’s 7.6-inch workspace or its foldable Split View experience. Its camera system does, however, add a dedicated 48MP telephoto camera with 4x optical zoom, while Duo’s dual 48MP rear system is specified for up to 2x optical-quality zoom.
Choose Pro Max when camera reach, familiar software and lower cost are more important than carrying a tablet-sized screen in your pocket. It is not a substitute for a foldable workspace; it is a cheaper way to keep the Apple experience.
Display and multitasking: compare the workflow, not just inches
| Question | iPhone Duo | Galaxy Z Fold8 | Pixel 11 Pro Fold | Razr Fold | iPhone 18 Pro Max |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Inner or main display | 7.6-inch inner display | 8.0 inches | 8.0-inch inner OLED | 8.09-inch inner display | 6.9-inch conventional display |
| Outer display stated | 5.4 inches | Not stated in the supplied specifications | 6.5 inches | Not stated in the supplied specifications | Not applicable |
| Multitasking approach | iOS 27 foldable experiences and Split View | Android multitasking with a work-oriented 4:3 inner screen | Android split-screen | Large inner-screen Android workspace | Conventional single-screen iOS use |
Diagonal size alone does not determine usefulness. Consider whether you regularly need a document beside a browser, a video beside notes, or a map beside messages. If the answer is no, the Pro Max’s simpler single-screen design may be more practical than any foldable.
Camera and authentication differences
| Phone | Rear-camera information established here | Authentication |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone Duo | Dual 48MP Dual Fusion cameras; up to 2x optical-quality zoom | Side-button Touch ID |
| iPhone 18 Pro Max | Dedicated 48MP telephoto; 4x optical zoom | Face ID |

| Pixel 11 Pro Fold | Not stated in the cited specifications | Not stated in the cited specifications |
| Motorola Razr Fold | Not stated in the cited specifications | Not stated in the cited specifications |
Do not assume that a foldable’s larger screen or processor tells you how it compares for photography. The established camera distinction in this comparison is between Duo’s dual-camera system and Pro Max’s dedicated telephoto. If long-range framing is important, Pro Max has the clearer specification advantage among the models with stated camera details.

Battery and charging: how to read the claims
| Phone | Published battery or video figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone Duo | Up to 31 hours of inner-screen video playback | Apple claim; measured under Apple’s test conditions |
| Galaxy Z Fold8 | Up to 26 hours of video playback from a 4,800mAh battery | Samsung claim; not directly comparable with Apple’s test |
| Motorola Razr Fold | More than 43 hours of battery life from a 6,000mAh battery | Motorola claim; test method differs from video-playback figures |
| Pixel 11 Pro Fold | Not stated in the cited material | No comparable figure established here |
| iPhone 18 Pro Max | Not stated in the cited material | No comparable figure established here |
There was no independent long-term testing of iPhone Duo in the material available before its October 23, 2026 release. Battery numbers should therefore guide questions, not serve as a definitive ranking.

Price reality: list price, trade-in and financing are different numbers
Use the table’s manufacturer prices as the clean baseline. Then calculate your own effective cost using only offers for which you meet the eligibility requirements.
Apple’s advertised ways to reduce Duo’s price
- Trade-in credits of $175 to $885 for eligible iPhone 13 or newer devices.
- Up to $1,200 in carrier credit for qualifying high-end trade-ins.
- A 24-month Apple Upgrade lease advertised from $57.99 before taxes and trade-in credit.
These are volatile offers. Credit depends on device condition, model, carrier, plan and the current promotion term. Verify the amount at checkout rather than subtracting the maximum from the $1,999 list price.
How to make an apples-to-apples calculation
- Write down the unlocked manufacturer list price for the phone you want.
- Subtract only a trade-in value that has been confirmed for your exact device and condition.
- Separate carrier bill credits from an immediate discount; bill credits generally depend on keeping a qualifying line and plan for the required term.
- Add taxes, activation charges, financing interest if any, and the cost of changing platforms or accessories.
- Compare the resulting total over the period you expect to keep the phone, not just the monthly headline payment.
A decision guide by buyer type
You want the closest foldable replacement
Start with Galaxy Z Fold8. Its book-style design, 8-inch inner display and seven-generation platform history make it the most direct substitute for the type of device Duo is. Pick Pixel 11 Pro Fold instead if Google’s AI ecosystem is more important than platform maturity.

Razr Fold has the largest listed inner display, a 6,000mAh battery and the highest stated wired and wireless charging rates. Choose it for those hardware priorities, while treating the endurance claim as a manufacturer measurement rather than a guarantee.
You are an iPhone owner who does not need a fold
Choose iPhone 18 Pro Max. It preserves Apple services, A20 Pro performance and Apple Intelligence while lowering the starting price by $700. Its dedicated telephoto also suits buyers who value optical reach.
You need two apps visible often
Choose among the three book-style foldables. Duo offers iOS 27 Split View; Fold8 and Pixel 11 Pro Fold explicitly emphasize Android multitasking; Razr Fold supplies the largest listed inner canvas. Test the specific apps you rely on before committing.
You rarely open a phone beyond one app
The Pro Max is the rational default. Paying for a hinge and inner display only makes sense when that workspace changes what you do.

- Confirm the form factor: Decide whether a 6.9-inch conventional screen is enough or whether you will use a 7.6- to 8.09-inch inner display weekly.
- Check platform dependencies: List the Apple services, accessories and app workflows you cannot replace before moving to Android.
- Check authentication preferences: Duo uses side-button Touch ID, while Pro Max uses Face ID; the cited Android authentication details are not stated.
- Check connectivity requirements: Duo is eSIM-only worldwide. Confirm that your carrier and travel arrangements support eSIM before buying.
- Check storage: Fold8 ranges up to 1TB; Razr Fold’s cited configuration has 512GB; the base capacities for Duo, Pixel 11 Pro Fold and Pro Max are not established in the supplied specifications.
- Check the return window: Foldable comfort, app scaling and battery behavior are personal. A return period is more useful than assuming a manufacturer endurance number predicts your day.
- Price the whole transaction: Compare list price, confirmed trade-in, carrier obligations, taxes and financing separately.
Bottom line: which alternative should you buy?
Buy the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 if you want the most direct, work-oriented book-style foldable alternative. Choose the Google Pixel 11 Pro Fold for Google software and a large inner OLED display. Choose the Motorola Razr Fold when battery capacity and charging speed are your deciding specifications.
Choose the iPhone 18 Pro Max for the best lower-price answer to an Apple buyer’s problem: it keeps the A20 Pro chip, Apple Intelligence, Face ID and ecosystem continuity while starting at $1,299. It is the right recommendation when the hinge is optional. If the hinge is the reason you are shopping, one of the three sub-$1,999 foldables is the better fit.
