Ford BlueCruise and GM Super Cruise are the strongest mainstream alternatives to Tesla for hands-free highway driving in North America. Both let a driver remove their hands from the wheel only on roads the system recognizes and only while the driver remains attentive and ready to take over. BlueCruise is tied to Ford’s prequalified divided-highway Blue Zones; Super Cruise uses GM’s compatible-road map and requires an eligible OnStar plan after its included trial. BMW Highway Assistant is the premium choice across several BMW lines, while Mercedes-Benz MB.DRIVE brings supervised hands-free capability to selected models and packages. None of these systems is autonomous or a substitute for an engaged driver.

What hands-free highway driving actually means

Hands-free is a specific operating mode, not a promise that the car can drive itself. In a qualifying situation, the system controls steering and speed while the driver’s hands may be off the wheel. Cameras and other sensors continue to check that the driver is watching the road, and the system can issue an attention or takeover request at any time.

These products are Level 2 driver-assistance systems. The driver remains responsible for the route, traffic, weather, lane changes that the system cannot perform, and every response to an alert. GM’s support guidance expressly says Super Cruise does not replace the driver’s responsibility to stay attentive and ready to control the vehicle. BMW identifies Highway Assistant as Level 2, and independent reporting on Tesla’s Full Self-Driving branding likewise notes that human oversight remains necessary.

The practical use case is a long, controlled-access highway trip where reducing continuous steering effort matters. The systems are not intended for every road, every weather condition or every traffic situation. Their value depends as much on mapped-road coverage, driver monitoring and local availability as on the hardware installed in a particular car.

Ford BlueCruise: the clearest Ford alternative

How the system is defined

Ford describes BlueCruise as a hands-free highway driver-assist system that adds hands-free highway driving to Adaptive Cruise Control. Its operating map is a network of prequalified divided highways called hands-free Blue Zones. Outside those zones, the vehicle may still provide other driver-assistance functions, but the hands-free mode is not available.

Which Ford vehicles qualify

Ford states that BlueCruise 1.5 or higher is currently available on 2025 and 2026 Mustang Mach-E vehicles and on the 2026 Explorer. Eligibility depends on the exact vehicle and plan status, so a model name alone is not enough. A used vehicle, a different model year or a different trim can have a different hardware or service status.

What to verify before a trip

  1. Use Ford’s vehicle-availability tools to confirm that the vehicle identification number, model year and configuration support BlueCruise 1.5 or higher.
  2. Check that the planned route contains prequalified divided-highway Blue Zones. A highway that looks suitable on a map may not be a Blue Zone.
  3. Review the vehicle’s current plan status and any renewal terms before relying on hands-free operation for a long trip.
  4. Read the owner documentation for the specific vehicle to learn how Adaptive Cruise Control and BlueCruise are engaged, how lane-change assistance behaves and what alerts require immediate takeover.
  5. When the system indicates that hands-free use is available, keep your eyes on traffic and be prepared to resume steering whenever the zone ends, weather changes or the vehicle requests control.

Strengths and trade-offs

  • Strength: Ford gives the feature a clear operating boundary through Blue Zones rather than implying universal hands-free capability.
  • Strength: Lane-change assistance is available on supported configurations, which can reduce some of the manual work on qualifying journeys.
  • Trade-off: The benefit is route-dependent. A journey dominated by ordinary surface streets or highways outside the Blue-Zone network will not deliver continuous hands-free driving.
  • Trade-off: Eligibility is tied to model year, equipment and plan status, so a dealer listing that merely says adaptive cruise control is not proof that BlueCruise is included.

GM Super Cruise: broad brand and vehicle coverage

How compatible-road operation works

Chevrolet’s official support description calls Super Cruise an available driver-assistance technology that allows hands-free driving on compatible roads. GM’s system uses a mapped-road network. When the vehicle is on a compatible highway and the required conditions are met, Super Cruise can operate in highway traffic, including stop-and-go situations described by Chevrolet.

Models and brands

GM says Super Cruise was introduced in 2017 and is available across 23 vehicles in the Chevrolet, Buick, Cadillac and GMC lineups on its current technology page. That breadth is the main reason Super Cruise is a practical alternative for buyers who want to choose among several body styles and price bands without leaving one automotive group.

Subscription and activation

Chevrolet states that an eligible OnStar plan is required after the initial included trial. The trial length and the recurring price are not the same for every vehicle, offer or market, so confirm the terms attached to the exact vehicle rather than assuming that a used car has permanent access.

Using Super Cruise responsibly

  1. Confirm that the vehicle has Super Cruise hardware and that the specific trim is eligible; ordinary adaptive cruise control does not provide the same capability.
  2. Check GM’s compatible-road coverage for the route and destination. Coverage is a prerequisite, not merely a recommendation.
  3. Make sure the vehicle’s eligible OnStar service is active once the included trial has ended.
  4. Engage the system according to the vehicle manual only after the road and conditions are shown as supported.
  5. Keep watching traffic during hands-free operation. Be ready to steer immediately when the road leaves the map, the system detects poor conditions or an alert requests control.

Strengths and trade-offs

  • Strength: GM offers the technology across four brands and 23 vehicles according to its current technology page, giving buyers more choice of body style and badge.
  • Strength: Compatible-road operation can include stop-and-go highway traffic when the stated conditions are satisfied.
  • Trade-off: The feature depends on GM’s mapped-road database. A route can be physically suitable yet unavailable if it is not mapped or if the map does not cover the relevant segment.
  • Trade-off: Continued use after the included trial requires an eligible OnStar plan, creating a recurring ownership consideration in addition to the vehicle price.

BMW Highway Assistant: a premium Level 2 choice

What BMW reports

BMW Group reported in 2026 that customers had covered more than 200 million kilometres of hands-free driving with BMW Highway Assistant. That is a manufacturer-reported usage figure, not an independent safety test or a guarantee that every BMW with the name has identical capability.

BMW places Highway Assistant in its latest Level 2 driver-assistance generation. The driver still supervises the vehicle, watches the road and responds to takeover requests. Hands-free status does not change the legal or practical responsibility to control the car.

Supported vehicle lines

BMW identifies the 5 Series, 7 Series, BMW iX, X5, X6, X7, XM and new iX3 among vehicles using Highway Assistant. Availability can change by market, trim, production date and regulatory approval. A vehicle line listed by BMW is therefore a starting point for checking equipment, not a blanket promise that every example has the feature.

Who should consider it

Highway Assistant suits buyers who want a premium vehicle and are willing to verify a more complex combination of model, package and market rules. It is less suitable for someone who needs a simple, universal feature across every road: the system remains a supervised, location- and condition-dependent assistant.

Mercedes-Benz MB.DRIVE: package-dependent hands-free assistance

Availability by model and package

Mercedes-Benz USA says its MB.DRIVE packages can provide supervised, hands-free driving on the highway, with availability varying by model. The company’s listed examples include the 2026 CLA EV, 2027 CLA, GLB, C-Class BEV, GLC EV, GLE, GLS, S-Class, EQS Sedan and AMG GT 4-Door EV. The list is not a statement that every trim or powertrain includes the feature.

Mercedes-Benz presents MB.DRIVE as a package decision. Before ordering, open the configuration for the exact model and verify that the package includes hands-free highway capability in the country where the vehicle will be operated.

How it compares with the mainstream choices

MB.DRIVE is most relevant when a buyer is already choosing among Mercedes-Benz models and wants the available driver-assistance package. Ford and GM provide clearer named road-network concepts through Blue Zones and compatible-road maps; Mercedes-Benz requires closer attention to the model and package configuration. In all cases, the hands-free mode remains supervised rather than autonomous.

Mapped roads, driver monitoring and weather limits

Mapped-road boundaries

BlueCruise, Super Cruise and the premium systems described here are not unrestricted highway autopilots. Their maps define where the manufacturer has validated the road geometry and operating conditions for the hands-free mode. A system can stop being hands-free at a boundary, during a map mismatch or when temporary conditions make assistance inappropriate.

Eyes-on supervision

Hands-free removes the need to keep your hands on the steering wheel in the permitted mode; it does not remove the need to watch the road. Driver-monitoring cameras or other checks can issue escalating alerts. Looking at a phone, reading or turning around to attend to passengers defeats the safety model and can lead to a takeover request or disengagement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Weather and visibility

Rain, snow, fog, glare, dirty sensors, faded lane markings, construction and emergency scenes can prevent hands-free activation or cause the system to hand control back. Treat a clear dashboard indication as a current condition, not a guarantee for the next kilometre. Slow down and take control when visibility or traction is poor.

Lane changes and unusual traffic

Ford identifies lane-change assistance on supported BlueCruise configurations, but equipment and behavior vary. Do not assume that another system will change lanes, navigate interchanges or handle a blocked lane without input. Read the exact owner manual and remain ready to perform the maneuver yourself.

Costs, plans and ownership checks

There is no reliable single price comparison across these systems because the hardware is bundled into different vehicles and trims, while connected-service terms vary by model, country and promotion. The retrieved manufacturer material establishes the need to verify current pricing rather than supplying a universal figure.

  • Vehicle price: Compare the complete configured vehicle, not only the driver-assistance line item. Body style, battery or engine, trim and other safety packages can dominate the total.
  • Trial terms: GM explicitly includes an initial Super Cruise trial before an eligible OnStar plan is required. Confirm the trial end date for the individual vehicle.
  • Recurring access: Check whether the hands-free function remains active after the trial, what plan is required, and how cancellation affects the feature.
  • Used vehicles: Verify hardware, software version, map eligibility and transferable service. A previous owner’s subscription or trial may not continue.
  • Regional rules: Confirm that the feature is approved and supported in the state or country where you will drive; the same model name can have different equipment in different markets.

Which alternative fits each buyer?

Choose Ford BlueCruise when your routes match Blue Zones

Ford is the straightforward choice if your regular trips use prequalified divided highways and you want a clearly defined hands-free map. Check the 2025 or 2026 Mustang Mach-E and 2026 Explorer eligibility details before purchase, then verify the route and plan status.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose GM Super Cruise when vehicle choice and mapped coverage matter

Super Cruise is the better fit if you want to choose among Chevrolet, Buick, Cadillac and GMC vehicles or value hands-free operation that can include stop-and-go traffic on compatible highways. The OnStar plan after the included trial must be part of your ownership budget.

Choose BMW Highway Assistant for a premium BMW ecosystem

BMW makes sense for buyers who prefer the 5 or 7 Series, BMW iX, X5, X6, X7, XM or new iX3 and who accept market- and trim-level verification. The reported 200-million-kilometre usage figure shows substantial customer use, but it does not remove Level 2 supervision requirements.

Choose Mercedes-Benz MB.DRIVE when the model and package are the priority

MB.DRIVE is appropriate when a selected Mercedes-Benz model offers the required package in your market. Confirm the exact configuration for models such as the CLA EV, CLA, GLB, C-Class BEV, GLC EV, GLE, GLS, S-Class, EQS Sedan or AMG GT 4-Door EV rather than relying on the model family name.

A pre-purchase and pre-trip checklist

  1. Identify the exact vehicle: Record model year, trim, powertrain and vehicle identification number where available.
  2. Confirm hardware and software: Ask the manufacturer or dealer to verify BlueCruise, Super Cruise, Highway Assistant or MB.DRIVE capability for that exact vehicle.
  3. Check the route: Use the current Blue Zone or compatible-road map and inspect every major segment, including the return trip.
  4. Check geography: Verify state, country and regulatory availability; do not assume that a feature offered in one market is offered in another.
  5. Read service terms: Note trial dates, required connected plans, renewal conditions and whether service transfers with a used vehicle.
  6. Learn takeover behavior: Practice in a safe setting so you recognize visual, audible and steering-wheel alerts before a long journey.
  7. Prepare for a manual drive: Keep your attention on traffic, keep your phone away and be ready to steer, brake or cancel assistance whenever conditions change.

Bottom line

For most North American buyers seeking a non-Tesla hands-free highway system, start with Ford BlueCruise and GM Super Cruise. BlueCruise is strongest when your regular divided-highway routes fall inside Ford’s Blue Zones and your vehicle is an eligible 2025 or 2026 Mustang Mach-E or 2026 Explorer. Super Cruise offers broader GM brand and vehicle choice, compatible-road stop-and-go operation and a clearly stated post-trial OnStar requirement. BMW Highway Assistant and Mercedes-Benz MB.DRIVE are credible premium alternatives, but their availability is more dependent on model, trim, package and market. Whichever system you choose, verify the exact route and service status and treat hands-free driving as supervised Level 2 assistance, never as autonomous driving.
