If you want a beginner-friendly alternative to an Entry Grade Strike Gundam, start with the ENTRY GRADE 1/144 RX-78-2 Gundam. It is listed in the same manufacturer catalog and carries the same Level 1 label and Japan price as the Strike. Choose the ENTRY GRADE 1/144 ν Gundam if its design appeals more, or move to the HG 1/144 Gundam Aerial if you specifically want a High Grade kit. These are documented catalog options, not a tested ranking: the available manufacturer material does not establish exact build times, part counts for the Entry Grade kits, or a universal difficulty order.

Quick comparison of the documented alternatives

The table below keeps manufacturer facts separate from assumptions about how an individual beginner will experience a kit. Prices are BANDAI SPIRITS Japan catalog prices excluding tax, from undated pages accessed in 2026; they are not guarantees of what a local shop or marketplace will charge.

Kit Manufacturer grade and label Scale Listed Japan price, tax excluded What the source establishes
ENTRY GRADE 1/144 RX-78-2 Gundam Entry Grade, Level 1 1/144 JPY 700 Same-grade alternative to Strike; the manual groups parts by body section and presents panel lining and HG as follow-on ideas.
ENTRY GRADE 1/144 ν Gundam Entry Grade, Level 1 1/144 JPY 1,000 Same-grade alternative selected primarily by mobile-suit design.
HG 1/144 Gundam Aerial High Grade; cited HG examples are labeled Level 3 1/144 JPY 1,300 Option for someone willing to compare a different grade. Bandai describes the HG category as about 13 cm and about 150 parts; those figures are category guidance, not a verified Aerial-specific count.
ENTRY GRADE 1/144 Strike Gundam Entry Grade, Level 1 1/144 JPY 700 Reference point in the same Entry Grade catalog.

Bandai’s Entry Grade catalog lists the RX-78-2, ν Gundam and Strike together at the Entry Grade catalog. The Aerial appears in Bandai’s High Grade Gundam catalog. Those pages are the basis for the grade, scale, level and catalog-price statements above.

Which alternative should a first-time builder choose?

Choose RX-78-2 when you want the closest like-for-like swap

The RX-78-2 is the most straightforward substitute when your priority is staying with Entry Grade. It is listed at Level 1, 1/144 scale and JPY 700 in Japan before tax, matching the Strike’s catalog price and grade. That makes it the cleanest comparison for a reader who wants the Entry Grade format but prefers the original Gundam design.

The accompanying manual material gives useful direction for a learning path without promising a specific completion time. Parts are presented in body-section groups, so you can follow the manual’s sequence rather than trying to identify every piece from a single large pile. After assembly, the manual introduces panel lining as a way to add detail and points readers toward the HG series as a next step. Read that as manufacturer guidance, not proof that every builder will find RX-78-2 easier than another kit. You can consult the manual directly at the ENTRY GRADE 1/144 RX-78-2 Gundam manual.

Choose ν Gundam when design is the deciding factor

The ENTRY GRADE 1/144 ν Gundam keeps the same Entry Grade and Level 1 context while changing the visual subject. Bandai lists it at JPY 1,000 in Japan excluding tax. The catalog establishes its identity, grade and scale, but does not provide an individualized difficulty score, assembly-time estimate or part count. If you are deciding between two Level 1 kits, your strongest evidence from this material is therefore design preference and the listed price, not a claim that one is universally simpler.

ν Gundam is a good fit for a beginner who will stay motivated by the mobile suit they actually want on the shelf. Motivation is a legitimate selection criterion, but it should not be confused with a manufacturer-tested ranking. Treat the Level 1 label as a catalog classification and use the manual supplied with the kit for the definitive assembly order.

Choose HG Gundam Aerial when you want to enter a different grade

Gundam Aerial is the alternative for readers who are not limiting the search to Entry Grade. Bandai lists the HG 1/144 Gundam Aerial at JPY 1,300 in Japan excluding tax. The High Grade catalog describes the HG category as 1:144 scale, approximately 13 cm and approximately 150 parts, and labels the cited HG examples Level 3. These are category-level descriptions. They should not be presented as a verified Aerial-specific part count or as a guarantee that every beginner will need a particular amount of time.

Select Aerial if the High Grade format is part of the appeal: you are intentionally moving from an Entry Grade listing to an HG listing and are comfortable evaluating a different manufacturer label. The comparison is meaningful because both are 1/144 scale, but scale alone does not make the kits interchangeable. Grade, catalog level and the individual manual remain separate pieces of information.

Understanding grade, level and scale before you buy

Grade is the product family

Entry Grade and High Grade are manufacturer categories. The catalog places RX-78-2, ν Gundam and Strike in Entry Grade, while Aerial appears in High Grade. A grade tells you which product line you are considering; it does not, by itself, certify a personal skill threshold or a guaranteed number of assembly steps.

Level is a manufacturer label, not a time promise

The Entry Grade models cited here are labeled Level 1 in Bandai’s catalog. The HG catalog examples cited in the material are labeled Level 3. Use those labels to understand how Bandai positions the lines, but do not convert Level 1 into an exact hour count or Level 3 into a universal beginner prohibition. Hand size, vision, experience with small parts and the finish you want can all change the experience, and the supplied official pages do not test those variables.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Scale tells you the display relationship

All three alternatives are 1/144 scale. Bandai’s HG category description adds an approximate 13 cm finished height, but that number is category guidance rather than a verified measurement for every Aerial configuration. A shared scale is useful when planning shelf space or a collection, yet it does not establish identical proportions, articulation or part separation between grades.

Decision guide by beginner priority

If you want the same catalog price as Strike

Pick RX-78-2. Bandai lists both RX-78-2 and Strike at JPY 700 in Japan, excluding tax. This is a manufacturer list price comparison, not a prediction of your local checkout total. Import costs, exchange rates, retailer margins, shipping and regional distribution can all change what you pay.

If you want the same grade but a different silhouette

Pick ν Gundam. It remains in the Entry Grade catalog and Level 1 grouping, while its listed Japan price is JPY 1,000 excluding tax. The extra JPY 300 in the catalog comparison is a documented price difference, not evidence of greater or lesser difficulty.

If you are curious about HG rather than Entry Grade

Pick HG Gundam Aerial. It is the only candidate here from the HG catalog, listed at JPY 1,300 excluding tax. Compare the grade and level labels first, then decide whether the Aerial design justifies moving outside the Entry Grade line. Do not assume the category’s approximate 150-part description is the exact count in the box.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you want the clearest manufacturer learning path

Start with RX-78-2 and use its manual as a reference for what to try next. The manual material introduces panel lining and suggests trying HG after Entry Grade. That is a sequence proposed by the manufacturer, not an independent review or a promise that the transition will feel identical for every builder.

A practical buying checklist

Before placing an order, verify the specific listing rather than relying on a search-result title. Use this checklist:

  • Confirm the exact name and grade. Look for the full wording, such as ENTRY GRADE 1/144 RX-78-2 Gundam, ENTRY GRADE 1/144 ν Gundam or HG 1/144 Gundam Aerial.
  • Check scale. Each candidate in this guide is identified as 1/144, while the HG page’s approximate 13 cm statement applies at category level.
  • Read the seller’s region and currency. The JPY figures in Bandai’s catalogs are Japan prices excluding tax, not current prices in another country.
  • Check stock on the day you buy. Regional availability and current inventory were not established by the manufacturer pages cited here. A catalog listing does not prove that a retailer has a unit ready to ship.
  • Inspect edition or packaging details. If a listing combines several grades or variants, make sure the product code, photos and description all refer to the kit you intend to build.
  • Budget for delivery and local taxes. The catalog prices exclude Japanese consumption tax and do not include shipping, import charges or marketplace fees.
  • Save the correct manual link. Manuals are the authoritative assembly reference once the box is in front of you. Bandai’s manual index is available at the official product-manual index.

A beginner workflow that works for any of these kits

1. Identify the kit before opening runners

Match the box title, grade and scale to the listing you purchased. This simple check prevents a common category mistake: treating an HG Aerial as if it were an Entry Grade kit because both are 1/144. Keep the manual with the box so the diagrams and part labels remain associated with the correct model.

2. Read the manual’s first pages

Do not begin by cutting every visible part from the runners. First scan the sequence, symbols and body-section organization. The RX-78-2 manual material groups parts by body area; following that structure lets you build in manageable batches and reduces the chance of mixing pieces from separate sections.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Work one body section at a time

Lay out only the runners and parts needed for the current step. Return unused parts to the box or a labeled tray. This method is a recommendation for organization, not a claim about a kit-specific part count or assembly duration.

4. Test each completed section against the diagram

Before moving to the next section, compare orientation, color and connection points with the manual illustration. If a piece does not seat naturally, stop and recheck the step instead of forcing it. A pause at this stage is safer than trying to correct a misassembled section after several more steps.

5. Keep the first finish simple

Build the model as supplied before deciding whether to add extra detail. You can then judge which surfaces benefit from panel lining or another finish without changing your assessment of the basic kit. This is especially useful when comparing an Entry Grade model with HG Aerial, because you are evaluating the grade change separately from your finishing technique.

Panel lining and moving from Entry Grade to HG

The RX-78-2 manual material treats panel lining as a next step for adding detail and suggests trying the HG series afterward. A beginner can use that advice as a progression:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Complete the unmodified build. Make sure every section is assembled and stable before adding ink or another detailing product.
  2. Study the molded detail. Choose a few recessed lines rather than attempting every surface at once.
  3. Apply a small amount of panel-lining product. Follow the product’s own safety and cleanup directions; the Gundam manual does not establish a universal product or method.
  4. Evaluate the result in normal light. Stop if the effect is too heavy, uneven or difficult to clean.
  5. Use an HG kit as a deliberate next experiment. Aerial is a documented HG option, but the catalog’s Level 3 label should be treated as positioning information rather than a guaranteed skill requirement.

This sequence keeps the manufacturer’s suggestion in context. Panel lining is an optional finishing step, and trying HG is an option for continued learning, not a requirement for calling an Entry Grade build complete.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Assuming a catalog level predicts your build time

Level 1 and Level 3 are useful labels, but the cited material does not supply tested times or a universal difficulty scale. Record your own experience if you want a personal benchmark; do not present it as a manufacturer statistic.

Calling the HG category’s part count kit-specific

Bandai’s HG page says the category has about 150 parts. That does not verify that every HG listing, including Aerial, contains exactly that number. In a comparison, write about 150 parts as category guidance and mark the Aerial-specific count as not stated.

Treating Japan catalog prices as local retail prices

JPY 700, JPY 1,000 and JPY 1,300 are tax-exclusive Japan catalog figures. They are useful for relative context, but they do not include local tax, shipping, import costs or retailer pricing. Always inspect the current listing in your region.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming a catalog listing means current stock

The official pages establish that the products are listed; they do not establish that a particular shop has inventory today. Check the retailer’s stock indicator, dispatch region and return terms immediately before ordering.

Choosing by grade while ignoring the subject

Two kits can share 1/144 scale and still appeal to different builders. If RX-78-2, ν Gundam or Aerial is the design you genuinely want to finish, that preference can be more useful than an unsupported claim that one kit is objectively easiest.

Where each option fits in a first Gunpla collection

RX-78-2 as a reference point

RX-78-2 gives you the closest documented comparison to Strike: same Entry Grade family, same Level 1 label, same 1/144 scale and the same JPY 700 Japan catalog price before tax. Its manual also provides the clearest manufacturer-described route into panel lining and then HG.

ν Gundam as a design-led companion

ν Gundam broadens the display without changing the Entry Grade context. Its JPY 1,000 Japan catalog price is higher than the RX-78-2 and Strike listings, while the available material does not establish a separate difficulty or time result. Buy it because you prefer the subject, not because the price is a proxy for complexity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Gundam Aerial as a grade experiment

Aerial lets you test an HG kit while staying at 1/144 scale. The JPY 1,300 Japan catalog price and Level 3 label identify it as a different catalog proposition. The category’s approximate 13 cm size and about 150 parts help set expectations at a broad level, but the individual manual and contents of the box are the proper references for that specific kit.

Bottom line for a beginner

For the most direct Strike alternative, choose ENTRY GRADE 1/144 RX-78-2 Gundam. Choose ENTRY GRADE 1/144 ν Gundam when the design matters more than matching Strike’s listed price. Choose HG 1/144 Gundam Aerial when you intentionally want to move into High Grade. Bandai’s catalogs and manual support those distinctions; they do not support a tested ranking of build difficulty, exact assembly time, local price or current stock. Verify the regional listing and use the kit’s own manual before you buy and build.
