Moonlight paired with Sunshine is the best all-round alternative to Steam Remote Play if you want to stream non-Steam games and control both ends of the connection. Parsec is the better fit for internet-based remote access and shared desktop sessions. Steam Link remains the simplest option when every game is already in your Steam library and your client device is supported.

The right choice depends on launcher independence, host GPU and operating-system support, client devices, controller handling, home-versus-internet use, and how much network and setup work you are willing to manage.

Quick comparison

Option Best for Game sources Host requirements Client coverage Main trade-off
Steam Link Lowest-friction streaming from a Steam library Steam games Computer running Steam; wired networking is strongly recommended by Valve iPhone/iPad, Apple TV, Android, Fire TV, Raspberry Pi, Windows, Linux, macOS and Meta Quest Less flexible for non-Steam launchers and custom host control
Moonlight + Sunshine Self-hosted streaming, non-Steam games and fine-grained control Steam, other launchers and desktop applications added to Sunshine Modern AMD, NVIDIA or Intel GPU; Windows 10/11, macOS 12 or newer (experimental), or current Debian, Ubuntu and Fedora releases Windows, macOS, Linux, Raspberry Pi 4, Steam Link hardware, Android, Amazon Fire tablets/TVs, iOS, Apple TV and ChromeOS More host configuration; outside-home access requires network planning
Parsec Remote internet access, desktop sharing and collaboration Any launcher or desktop application you can run on the host Supported AMD or NVIDIA GPU and a reliable internet connection Use Parsec’s supported desktop and mobile clients Image quality and latency vary with the entire internet path

For a Steam-only household, start with Steam Link. For a gaming PC that also runs Epic, GOG, Xbox, emulators or manually installed games, start with Moonlight and Sunshine. Choose Parsec when the computer itself—not just a game library—must be reachable remotely.

What makes an alternative better than Steam Remote Play?

Steam Remote Play is tightly integrated with Steam, which removes much of the pairing and controller setup. An alternative earns its place by solving a specific limitation:

  • Internet access: The host and client can communicate across different networks rather than only across a home setup.
  • Device coverage: You may need a Linux laptop, iPhone, Android television, Apple TV, Steam Deck-like Linux client or browser-oriented device.
  • Remote desktop features: A general remote-access tool can be useful for productivity, troubleshooting or collaborative play as well as games.

Streaming quality is not determined by the app alone. The host renders and encodes the game, the network carries the video and input in both directions, and the client decodes the stream. A fast gaming PC cannot compensate for unstable Wi-Fi or a congested upload connection.

Steam Link: the easiest Steam-focused route

What it does well

Steam Link connects a supported client to a computer running Steam and streams the games in that Steam library. Valve describes real-time video and audio encoding with input returned over a low-latency protocol. It is therefore the natural first choice when your games are already in Steam and you want the fewest moving parts.

Valve’s supported client list includes iPhone and iPad, Apple TV, Android, Fire TV, Raspberry Pi, Windows, Linux, macOS and Meta Quest. That breadth makes Steam Link practical for a television, tablet or spare laptop without installing a separate host stack.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Network expectations

Valve’s Steam Link support documentation says that the host and client both need network connectivity and states, “Wired network strongly recommended.” Connect the gaming PC to the router with Ethernet first. If the client must use Wi-Fi, use a clean 5 GHz connection and keep it close enough to avoid retransmissions.

Steam Link is the lowest-effort option, but it is not the most launcher-agnostic one. Games that are not in Steam may require manual shortcuts or may not behave like native Steam titles. If you routinely switch launchers, Moonlight with Sunshine avoids making Steam the organizing layer.

Basic setup

  1. Install Steam on the host PC and sign in to the account containing the games.
  2. Connect the host PC to the router by Ethernet when possible.
  3. Install Steam Link on the target device from its platform’s app store or package source.
  4. Open Steam Link and select the host PC shown on the same network.
  5. Confirm the pairing code displayed on the client in Steam on the host.
  6. Connect a controller to the client, then launch a game from the Steam Link interface.
  7. Use the client’s streaming settings to reduce resolution or frame rate if the picture stutters; change one variable at a time so you can identify whether bandwidth or decoding is the constraint.

Moonlight plus Sunshine: the flexible self-hosted choice

How the pair works

Moonlight is the client: it displays the stream and sends controller, keyboard and mouse input. Sunshine is the host: it captures and encodes games or desktop applications on your gaming PC. You do need a host component; Moonlight cannot stream from a computer that has no compatible streaming service running.

Older Moonlight instructions often refer to NVIDIA GeForce Experience as the host. Moonlight’s FAQ notes that GeForce Experience is out of support and that newer Moonlight features require Sunshine. For a current setup, install Sunshine rather than building a new configuration around the retired host path.

Host support

The Moonlight setup guide lists Sunshine support for modern AMD, NVIDIA and Intel GPUs on Windows 10 and Windows 11. It also lists macOS 12 or newer as experimental and current Debian, Ubuntu and Fedora releases. “Modern” is important: the documentation does not promise every historical GPU, so check that your encoder is supported before planning a permanent installation.

Client support

Moonlight’s FAQ lists official clients for Windows, macOS, Linux, Raspberry Pi 4, Steam Link hardware, Android, Amazon Fire tablets and TVs, iOS, Apple TV and ChromeOS. This makes it a strong option when the host is not tied to Steam or the client is a Linux, Android or ChromeOS device.

Why choose it

  • Add non-Steam games, emulators or a full desktop session to Sunshine.
  • Keep the host under your control instead of relying on a platform’s game-library integration.
  • Use the same client family across computers, phones, televisions and single-board devices.
  • Fine-tune the stream for the decoder and display at the receiving end.

The cost of that flexibility is configuration. You must install and secure the host service, decide which applications are exposed, and solve connectivity when the client is outside your home.

Home-network setup

  1. Install Sunshine on the Windows, macOS or Linux gaming PC that has a supported GPU.
  2. Open Sunshine’s management interface locally and complete its initial administrator setup.
  3. Add the games or desktop applications you want to launch. Use the application’s actual executable and working directory where Sunshine asks for them.
  4. Install Moonlight on the client device.
  5. On the same home network, select the gaming PC in Moonlight. If it does not appear, enter the host’s local address and check that the host firewall allows Sunshine.
  6. Pair the client using the PIN shown by Moonlight and confirmed in Sunshine.
  7. Launch a test game at a conservative resolution and frame rate, then increase quality only after input and video are stable.

Outside-home use

Streaming over the internet requires more than installing the two applications. The host must be reachable from the client, the router and firewall must allow the required traffic, and the upload connection must remain stable while the game is running. Use a secure, documented remote-access method and avoid exposing an administration interface directly to the public internet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Moonlight’s setup guide records 5 Mbps or higher upload for streaming outside the home in its documented GeForce Experience path. That figure is a dated minimum for that path, not a guarantee of a sharp 1080p60 experience. Higher resolution, frame rate, scene complexity and network overhead all require additional headroom.

Parsec: internet remote access and desktop sharing

Where it fits

Parsec is designed to stream game footage or desktop sessions over the internet with low-latency remote access. It supports AMD GPUs as well as NVIDIA, and it works with whatever launcher or desktop application you can run on the host. That makes it useful for a game installed outside Steam, a remote Windows desktop, or a collaborative session where another person needs to see and control the host.

Unlike a purely home-network solution, Parsec’s experience depends heavily on the path between the two locations: the host’s upload, the client’s download, routing to the service, Wi-Fi interference and the delay to the selected test server all matter.

Parsec’s published 1080p60 targets

Measure Minimum stated by Parsec Recommended for 1080p60
Host upload 10 Mbps 30 Mbps
Client download 10 Mbps 30 Mbps
Ping to a same-city test server Below 30 ms Below 15 ms
Local link Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi; Parsec advises against background transfers, Wi-Fi boosters, Ethernet-over-powerline devices and mesh systems for its 1080p60 guidance

These are connection targets, not a promise that every game will feel identical to playing locally. A busy household can consume upload capacity without changing the advertised internet plan, and a high-motion game can expose compression limits sooner than a static desktop.

Basic setup

  1. Install Parsec on the gaming host and the remote client.
  2. Sign in and enable hosting on the gaming PC.
  3. Connect the host to the router by Ethernet where possible.
  4. On the remote device, select the host and request a connection.
  5. Approve the connection on the host and grant only the input permissions needed for the session.
  6. Start the game or desktop application on the host.
  7. Set the stream to a resolution and frame rate your measured upload and download can sustain; if latency rises during action, lower quality before increasing bandwidth elsewhere.

Moonlight versus Steam Link

Question Steam Link Moonlight + Sunshine
Do games need to be in Steam? It is optimized for the Steam library. No. Sunshine can expose non-Steam games and desktop applications.
Who manages the host? Steam manages the streaming relationship. You install and administer Sunshine.
Is Sunshine required? No. Yes, or another compatible host; Sunshine is the current recommended host in Moonlight’s documentation.
Setup effort Low when both devices are on a usable network. Moderate: host installation, application entries, pairing and potentially remote-network configuration.
Client range Broad consumer-device support, including televisions and Meta Quest. Broad computer, mobile, television and ChromeOS support, with Raspberry Pi 4 and Steam Link hardware also listed.
Best reason to choose it You want to play Steam games with minimal configuration. You want launcher independence and control over the host.

Moonlight is not automatically “better” than Steam Link. It is better when your games, host operating system or control requirements fall outside Steam’s most convenient path. Steam Link is better when simplicity and Steam integration matter more than customization.

Bandwidth, ping and Wi-Fi: making any option playable

Prioritize the host’s upload

The gaming PC sends encoded video and audio out to the client, so host upload is usually the first hard limit for remote streaming. Wire that PC to the router before upgrading the client connection. This removes one variable and prevents a weak host-side Wi-Fi link from wasting capacity before the stream reaches the internet or the rest of the house.

Keep the client link clean

For a wireless client, prefer 5 GHz Wi-Fi with a strong signal. Pause cloud backups, downloads and video uploads during a session. Parsec specifically advises against background transfers, Wi-Fi boosters, Ethernet-over-powerline devices and mesh systems in its 1080p60 guidance; these arrangements can add jitter or unpredictable hops.

Understand why buffering is not a cure

Moonlight’s FAQ explains that real-time streaming applications cannot buffer data in the normal video-player sense because waiting for a larger buffer would introduce significant latency. When packets arrive late, the practical fixes are a cleaner path, lower bitrate or lower resolution—not a large playback buffer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Measure the path, not just the advertised plan

Internet speed tests show capacity to a test location, while a remote gaming session uses a specific route at a specific time. Parsec’s guidance uses ping to a same-city test server: below 30 ms is its minimum target and below 15 ms is recommended. Treat those numbers as end-to-end targets for the relevant location, not as a universal guarantee for every destination.

Choosing by device and use case

Your situation Starting point Reason
Steam library on a television Steam Link Native Steam integration and TV-oriented clients keep setup simple.
Games spread across Steam and other launchers Moonlight + Sunshine Sunshine can present non-Steam applications and a desktop session.
Remote access from another city Parsec or Moonlight + Sunshine Parsec publishes explicit internet targets; Moonlight offers self-hosted control but needs more network work.
Linux laptop as the client Steam Link or Moonlight Both list Linux client support; choose Steam Link for Steam-only use and Moonlight for broader host control.
iPhone, iPad or Apple TV Steam Link or Moonlight Both projects list Apple clients; launcher choice determines which host is more convenient.
Android phone, tablet or TV Steam Link or Moonlight Both list Android-family clients; Moonlight is the flexible choice for non-Steam applications.
Remote desktop or collaborative control Parsec Its design covers desktop sessions as well as games.

Controller and input considerations

Steam Link documents controller input on its supported clients, and Moonlight documents client support across phones, televisions, computers and single-board devices. Pair the controller with the device that is actually receiving the stream unless that platform requires a different arrangement. Test the guide button, analog triggers, vibration and keyboard shortcuts before starting a long session; a game can display video correctly while an input mapping remains wrong.

For touch-only devices, a physical PC-compatible wireless controller is generally more suitable for action games than touch overlays. The choice of controller is separate from the streaming service, so verify that the phone, tablet or TV client supports the controller’s connection method.

Troubleshooting by symptom

The host does not appear

  • Confirm that host and client are on the same network for initial local pairing.
  • Check that the host service is running: Steam for Steam Link, Sunshine for Moonlight, or hosting enabled in Parsec.
  • Temporarily inspect the host firewall and security software for blocked streaming traffic, then create a narrowly scoped allow rule rather than disabling protection permanently.
  • For Moonlight, enter the host’s local address manually if discovery fails.

Video stutters while audio continues

  • Use Ethernet for the gaming PC.
  • Move the wireless client to a cleaner 5 GHz connection.
  • Stop background transfers and cloud synchronization.
  • Lower resolution, frame rate or bitrate until the stream has headroom.
  • On Parsec, compare your measured host upload and client download with its 10 Mbps minimum and 30 Mbps 1080p60 recommendation.

Controls feel delayed

  • Check ping and jitter rather than download speed alone.
  • Remove Wi-Fi boosters, powerline links or unnecessary mesh hops from the path where possible.
  • Use a wired client for testing; if delay disappears, the wireless segment is the bottleneck.
  • Lower stream quality only after improving the path; buffering cannot remove real-time latency.

A non-Steam game will not launch

  • Use Sunshine to add the game’s executable and working directory explicitly.
  • Launch the game locally first so its prerequisites and launcher prompts are complete.
  • For Parsec, start the launcher or game on the host and connect to the desktop session if direct launching is unreliable.
  • Steam Link is the least suitable of the three when the title is not represented cleanly in Steam.

Remote access works at home but not away

  • Verify that the host’s public-facing connection has enough upload capacity while the game is running.
  • Confirm that the remote-access method is configured on the router and host firewall.
  • Test from a genuinely separate network, such as cellular data, rather than a second device on the same Wi-Fi.
  • Use secure authentication and avoid publishing administrative panels directly to the internet.

A practical decision checklist

  1. List your games. If all are in Steam, keep Steam Link at the top of the list. If not, move Moonlight/Sunshine or Parsec ahead.
  2. Identify the host GPU and operating system. Sunshine’s documented current support covers modern AMD, NVIDIA and Intel GPUs on Windows 10/11, macOS 12 or newer experimentally, and current Debian, Ubuntu and Fedora releases.
  3. List every client device. Confirm that the service has a client for the exact phone, TV, computer or headset you plan to use.
  4. Decide whether the session leaves home. Outside-home streaming adds routing, firewall and upload requirements; do not evaluate it only on a fast local Wi-Fi test.
  5. Wire the host. This is the most broadly useful improvement across all three options.
  6. Start conservatively. Prove that pairing, input and stable video work at a modest quality level before tuning for higher resolution or frame rate.
  7. Choose the least complex service that meets your requirements. Extra control is valuable only when you need it; otherwise it becomes another component to maintain.
