The best SodaStream alternative depends on the drink you want, the bottle material you trust, and the CO2 cylinders you can actually refill locally. Choose the Aarke Carbonator 3 for a slim, lever-operated machine with a BPA-free PET bottle; the Aarke Carbonator Pro when dishwasher-safe glass and an enclosed bottle chamber matter; the Drinkmate OmniFizz when you need a machine designed for a broader range of beverages; or investigate the Mysoda Ruby 2 if its cylinder-exchange network is practical in your country. Availability, prices, valve standards and approved drinks vary by market, so verify the exact model and consumables before ordering.
Quick comparison: which alternative fits your kitchen?
| Model | What the cited specifications establish | Best fit | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aarke Carbonator 3 | Lever-operated carbonation; BPA-free PET bottle; accepts standardized 60-liter/425-gram CO2 cylinders according to Aarke. | People who want a narrow, design-led machine and do not require glass. | It is not a glass-bottle machine. Confirm that the cylinder valve sold in your region fits. |
| Aarke Carbonator Pro | Dishwasher-safe glass bottle used inside a protective cover; accepts standardized 60-liter/425-gram cylinders according to Aarke. | People who prefer glass and can accommodate a larger enclosed machine. | Aarke says the protective enclosure is what makes glass use safe. Do not use the Pro bottle in another machine. |
| Drinkmate OmniFizz | 1-liter carbonation bottle, infuser and an optional 60-liter CO2 cylinder kit; the catalog describes threaded-cylinder compatibility with several brands. | People prioritizing carbonation beyond plain water, subject to the current manual. | Thread and valve compatibility must be checked against the cylinder sold locally. |
| Mysoda Ruby 2 | Listed by Which? among tested sparkling-water makers; most recently tested in April 2026. UK retailers for cylinder exchange/refill are identified. | Buyers in markets where Ruby 2 and its refill network are readily available. | Detailed Which? scores are member-gated, and the listed refill retailers are UK-specific. |
| Other models discussed by Homes & Gardens | Breville InFizz is described as suitable for non-water drinks, Ninja Thirsti as offering flavored and still options, and Smeg as water-only. | Shoppers considering those categories. | These are editorial descriptions; check each model’s current manufacturer instructions before carbonating anything other than water. |
Aarke’s model comparison is available from the manufacturer. Drinkmate’s bottle, infuser and cylinder information appears in its product catalog. For market-specific testing and refill examples, see Which?.

Plain sparkling water with flavor added afterward
For water, the choice is mostly about bottle material, counter space, carbonation control and cylinder logistics. Add fruit, cordial or syrup after carbonation unless the manual explicitly permits adding it before. This approach is the least ambiguous because the machine is being used for the job every sparkling-water maker is designed to perform.
#1 Best Overall
- FRESH FIZZ ON DEMAND: This SodaStream TERRA CO2 bundle is perfect for Seltzer lovers; It contains 3 ready-to-use CO2 cylinders that together make 180 liters (48 gallons) of fresh sparkling water in seconds, right on your countertop.
- A SECURE SNAP AND SEAL: The Quick Connect CO2 cylinder clicks in with one push, and the bottle snaps into place before you fizz. The seal is built to keep the bubbles in the bottle and the water off your counter, so even your first drink feels easy.
- THE QUICK CONNECT CO2 SYSTEM: Each 60L Quick Connect cylinder makes up to 60 liters (16 gallons) of sparkling water. When it runs low, return, refill, and reuse it through SodaStream CO2 cylinder exchange at participating retailers. The Quick Connect fit makes every swap simple, so you are back to fizzing fast.
- BUILT FOR DAILY USE: The reusable bottles are BPA free and dishwasher safe, ready for the next round whenever you are. The slim machine sits neatly on the counter and tucks under most upper cabinets, built to keep up with you day after day.
- ONE MACHINE, EVERY KIND OF DRINK: After fizzing your water, add flavor drops for zero sugar sparkling water, stir in Pepsi or Mountain Dew syrups for a classic soda, or add a squeeze of citrus for a fresh twist. One soda maker, every kind of drink, made by you.
Juice, wine, cocktails or other non-water liquids
Do not assume that a machine that carbonates water can safely carbonate juice or an alcoholic drink. Liquid viscosity, sugar, pulp and foaming can change pressure behavior and make cleaning more difficult. Drinkmate positions the OmniFizz around a broader beverage use case, but its current instructions still govern which liquids, fill levels and procedures are allowed. The same caution applies to the InFizz description from Homes & Gardens: an editorial statement is not a substitute for the model’s manual.
Flavored or still drinks at the push of a button
Some powered systems sell a wider drink-making experience rather than a simple manual carbonator. Homes & Gardens characterizes Ninja Thirsti as offering flavored and still options. Treat that as a description of the product category, not proof that every regional version or recipe is supported. Check the exact model number, included pods or concentrates, and cleaning instructions.
Aarke Carbonator 3: the slim PET-bottle choice
The Carbonator 3 is the straightforward alternative for a user who wants a compact-looking, manual appliance and is comfortable with PET. Aarke describes a lever-operated process: you fit the bottle, inject CO2 and release pressure according to the machine’s instructions. The cited comparison specifies a BPA-free PET bottle and standardized 60-liter/425-gram cylinder compatibility.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Why choose it
- PET is lighter and less breakable than glass, useful if bottles move between the kitchen, office and refrigerator.
- The lever gives a direct, manual operating style rather than requiring a powered countertop appliance.
- Its slim design suits counters where an enclosed glass chamber would be intrusive.
- The nominal 60-liter/425-gram cylinder format is widely encountered, but the valve and regional refill system still need confirmation.
What to check before buying
- Measure the available counter depth and the clearance needed to insert and remove the bottle.
- Confirm that the supplied PET bottle size matches the amount your household drinks; the comparison cited here does not establish a larger or smaller bottle option.
- Ask a local retailer or refill provider whether its cylinder has the thread or connector required by the regional Carbonator 3.
- Plan hand-washing and replacement-bottle storage; the cited Aarke comparison identifies PET, not dishwasher approval.
Aarke Carbonator Pro: enclosed glass with a larger footprint
The Carbonator Pro is the Aarke option for people who specifically want glass. Aarke states that its dishwasher-safe glass bottle sits inside a protective cover and that the cover is the reason glass can be used safely in the Pro design. The machine also accepts standardized 60-liter/425-gram CO2 cylinders according to Aarke.
Why choose it
- Glass avoids the feel and appearance of a plastic bottle and can go in the dishwasher according to Aarke.
- The protective chamber is an integral safety feature, not an optional accessory.
- It preserves the manual carbonation workflow while changing the bottle material.
Trade-offs
- The enclosed design occupies more visual and physical space than a slim PET-bottle machine; compare the current local dimensions before purchase.
- Glass is heavier and can break if handled outside its intended enclosure. Use only the exact Pro bottle and chamber together.
- A glass bottle from another brand, even if it appears to fit, is not an established safe substitute.
Drinkmate OmniFizz: the broader-beverage candidate
The Drinkmate catalog lists the OmniFizz with a 1-liter carbonation bottle, an infuser and an optional 60-liter CO2 cylinder kit. It also describes threaded-cylinder compatibility with several brands. Those details make it the most obvious candidate in this shortlist for readers asking, “Which soda maker can carbonate juice?”—but the answer remains model- and liquid-specific.

Use the manual as the boundary
Before carbonating anything except water, read the current OmniFizz manual for approved liquids, maximum fill level, chilling requirements, pressure-release procedure and cleaning. A machine may technically produce bubbles in a liquid while the manufacturer still prohibits that use because of foaming, sugar residue or pressure concerns. Never infer permission from a retailer’s recipe or from another Drinkmate model.
Confirm the cylinder connection
The catalog’s threaded-compatibility statement does not make every threaded cylinder universal. Check the exact thread standard, seal, valve length and regional cylinder labeling. A cylinder can have the same nominal capacity and still fail to connect or seal correctly. Keep the cylinder upright and follow the machine’s instructions for installation and removal.

Mysoda Ruby 2: investigate local availability first
Mysoda Ruby 2 is a market-dependent option rather than a universal recommendation. Which? lists it among the sparkling-water makers it tests and says it was most recently tested in April 2026. The same comparison names UK retailers that exchange or refill cylinders for Ruby 2.
That evidence is useful if you live in the UK and can reach one of those retailers, but it should not be generalized to the United States, Canada, Australia or another country. Which?’s detailed results table is partly member-gated, so no rank or score can be stated here. Treat Ruby 2 as a model to verify locally: confirm stock, bottle availability, cylinder ownership rules, exchange deposits and the cost of a refill before committing.
CO2 cylinders: the compatibility check that prevents expensive mistakes
A machine’s advertised cylinder capacity is only one part of compatibility. Aarke says both Carbonator models accept standardized 60-liter/425-gram cylinders. Drinkmate lists a 60-liter kit option and threaded-cylinder compatibility. SodaStream explains that newer machines use pink Quick Connect cylinders while older models may use another cylinder type, and warns that not all machines accept glass bottles. Its current guidance is at SodaStream’s sparkling-water-maker FAQ.

- Save your hard-earned cash with with an eco-friendly carbonated water maker and never ran out of soda again. Americans drink an average of 45 gallons of soda yearly, burdening both their wallets and the planet. Switch to a smarter future with Ruby 2 carbonated water maker.
- This Soda Streaming Machine is Silent and easy to use with a quick-lock mechanism and noise cancellation feature with no electricity required. Simply fill the bottle with water, attach it to the soda maker with quick-lock system, press the carbonation button 2-3 times and that's it.
Use this four-part check
- Identify the connector. Is the machine designed for a threaded cylinder or a Quick Connect-style fitting? Do not decide from the cylinder’s color alone.
- Match the regional specification. Confirm the thread, valve and seal used by the model sold in your country.
- Locate a refill or exchange source. Check whether the provider accepts your cylinder brand and whether an empty-cylinder deposit applies.
- Confirm the machine manual. If the manual lists approved cylinder types, that list takes precedence over a marketplace compatibility claim.
A 60-liter rating is a nominal capacity, not a promise that your household will produce exactly 60 liters. Actual yield changes with water temperature, carbonation intensity, leaks and how often you vent the bottle. No comparable country-specific ownership-cost calculation is established here, so calculate using your local refill price and real consumption rather than assuming one brand is cheapest.
Bottle material and safety: PET versus enclosed glass
| Consideration | PET bottle | Glass bottle in a protective chamber |
|---|---|---|
| Examples in this shortlist | Aarke Carbonator 3 | Aarke Carbonator Pro |
| Handling | Light and less prone to shattering | Heavier; use the supplied enclosure |
| Cleaning evidence in the cited material | Material is identified as BPA-free; dishwasher approval is not stated | Aarke says the bottle is dishwasher-safe |
| Safety requirement | Use only the bottle approved for the machine and replace it according to the manufacturer’s date or wear guidance | The protective cover is part of the safe design; never operate the glass bottle outside it |
Do not transfer a bottle between brands just because the neck or base looks similar. Pressure-rated bottles are engineered as part of a specific machine system. Inspect for scratches, cracks, clouding or deformation and retire a damaged bottle instead of trying to extend its life.
Operating style, space and cleaning
Manual lever operation
Both Aarke models use a manual carbonation approach in the cited comparison. That means no electrical outlet is required, but you supply the force and repeat the carbonation cycle yourself. Manual machines are attractive for a dedicated water routine and for counters where a powered appliance would add clutter.
Powered or feature-led systems
A powered system can make sense if you want programmed flavor or still-drink functions, but those features introduce more components to clean and more model-specific consumables. Verify the electrical requirements, noise, footprint and regional warranty for the exact version; the cited material does not provide a universal ease-of-use ranking.
Counter and storage planning
- Measure the machine’s footprint, not just its width; bottle loading often requires overhead clearance.
- Reserve a cool, dry place for spare cylinders, away from heat and direct sunlight.
- Store filled bottles upright and chilled when the manual recommends it. Cold water generally foams less during carbonation, but follow the model’s instructions rather than improvising pressure procedures.
- Keep a separate space for empty cylinders and replacement bottles so you do not confuse an exchange-ready cylinder with a full one.
How to choose by household use case
Choose Carbonator 3 when…
You mainly make sparkling water, value a narrow manual machine and prefer a lightweight PET bottle. Confirm local cylinder availability and bottle-cleaning requirements before ordering.

Choose Carbonator Pro when…
Glass is a firm requirement and you can give an enclosed machine more counter space. Buy the complete Pro bottle-and-cover system rather than trying to retrofit glass to another carbonator.
Choose OmniFizz when…
Your priority is the possibility of carbonating beverages beyond water and you are prepared to follow a liquid-specific manual. Verify the threaded cylinder and the exact approved-drink list in your market.
Investigate Ruby 2 when…
You are in a country with confirmed Ruby 2 stock and a convenient exchange or refill route. In the UK, Which? identifies several retailers; elsewhere, establish the local network yourself.
Consider another model category when…
You want integrated flavored or still-drink functions rather than a simple water carbonator. The descriptions of InFizz, Thirsti and Smeg differ substantially, so compare the current manuals, bottle system and consumables for each exact model.
A purchase checklist
- Write down the liquids you actually intend to carbonate.
- Check the manufacturer’s approved-use list for those liquids.
- Choose PET or enclosed glass, then verify the bottle’s cleaning instructions.
- Identify the connector type and regional cylinder specification.
- Find a local refill or exchange provider and record the recurring price.
- Measure counter depth, bottle-loading clearance and storage space.
- Check what is included: bottle, infuser, cylinder, adapter and warranty.
- Price replacement bottles and cylinders, not only the machine.
- Read the pressure-release and cleaning sections of the manual before first use.
- Recheck availability on the retailer’s page immediately before payment; product lines and refill networks change.
Troubleshooting common failures
The cylinder will not attach
Stop rather than forcing it. You may have a threaded machine with a Quick Connect cylinder, the wrong regional valve, a damaged seal or a cylinder that is not seated correctly. Remove it, compare the connector with the manual and ask the retailer or refill provider to confirm compatibility.

The drink foams out
Use colder liquid, leave the specified headspace and carbonate only liquids the manufacturer permits. Sweet, pulpy or warm drinks can foam more aggressively. Vent pressure exactly as instructed; do not loosen a pressurized bottle or open an enclosure abruptly.
The drink tastes flat
Check that the cylinder still contains gas, the bottle is filled to the marked line and the cap or seal is undamaged. A leak at the connector or bottle can waste CO2. If the machine’s instructions specify a number of carbonation presses or a pause between them, follow that sequence instead of adding uncontrolled force.
The bottle is difficult to clean
Use only the cleaning method approved for that bottle. Aarke identifies the Pro glass bottle as dishwasher-safe, while the cited Carbonator 3 information establishes BPA-free PET but does not establish dishwasher approval. For any bottle without explicit dishwasher instructions, hand-wash with the recommended temperature and detergent.
What is not established by the available evidence
There is no reliable, comparable country-by-country price table here, no verified total-cost winner and no universal ranking for ease of use. Prices, included accessories, cylinder deposits, refill networks and model names change by region. Which?’s testing covers setup, ease of use, fizzability, build quality and drinks beyond water, but detailed scores are partly gated. Use those facts to frame your decision, not to claim a hidden score or a worldwide best machine.
Bottom-line recommendations
For most water-only users who want a compact manual alternative, start with the Aarke Carbonator 3. If dishwasher-safe glass is the deciding feature, choose the Aarke Carbonator Pro and keep its protective cover in use. If carbonating a wider range of drinks is the main reason to leave SodaStream, investigate the Drinkmate OmniFizz and follow its current liquid rules exactly. If you are in the UK, add Mysoda Ruby 2 to the shortlist only after confirming the local exchange network. In every case, the cylinder connector and refill path matter as much as the machine on the counter.
