If you want publicly traded paint and coatings exposure without buying Sherwin-Williams, start with PPG Industries (NYSE: PPG) for the broadest documented overlap. Axalta Coating Systems (NYSE: AXTA) is more coatings-focused, while RPM International (NYSE: RPM), AkzoNobel (Euronext Amsterdam: AKZA) and Nippon Paint Holdings (Tokyo: 4612) provide different combinations of specialty, architectural, industrial and international exposure.
These stocks are not interchangeable. The sensible choice depends on end markets, distribution, geography, financial quality, dividend policy and any pending transaction. The information below uses company reporting for 2025 and transaction communications from 2026; confirm current prices, valuation multiples, listings and merger status before making an investment decision.
What counts as an alternative to Sherwin-Williams stock?
An alternative is a publicly traded company whose revenue and profits are materially connected to paints, coatings or closely related products. It is not a can of paint, a tool or another physical product. Buying a coating from a retailer does not create stock exposure to the manufacturer in a way that substitutes for owning shares.
Sherwin-Williams combines manufacturing with an unusually large company-operated distribution network. Its branded products are sold through more than 4,900 company-operated stores and facilities. Other brands reach customers through mass merchants, home centers, dealers, hardware stores and distributors. That mix means a competitor with similar products but a different route to market can have different margins, customer relationships and economic risks.

Sherwin-Williams as the benchmark
Sherwin-Williams reported $23.6 billion in net sales for the year ended December 31, 2025. The company says its business manufactures, develops, distributes and sells paints, coatings and related products to professional, industrial, commercial and retail customers.
| Benchmark feature | Company-reported detail |
|---|---|
| Company-operated network | More than 4,900 stores and facilities selling Sherwin-Williams-branded products |
| Other distribution | Mass merchants, home centers, dealers, hardware stores and distributors |
| Named brands | Valspar, HGTV HOME by Sherwin-Williams, Dutch Boy, Krylon, Minwax, Thompson’s Water Seal and Cabot |
| 2025 net sales | $23.6 billion for the year ended December 31, 2025 |
| Adjusted EPS history | 6.9% five-year compound annual growth rate, as presented by the company |
| Dividend history | 47 consecutive annual increases as of December 31, 2025 |
| Acquisition history | More than 50 acquisitions since 2000 |
Those figures are issuer-presented historical measures, not a forecast and not proof that another company deserves the same valuation. They establish why Sherwin-Williams is a demanding benchmark: a replacement must be judged against both its product portfolio and its distribution advantages.
The main publicly traded alternatives
| Company | Listing | Exposure indicated by the available filings | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| PPG Industries | NYSE: PPG | Architectural coatings plus performance coatings, including aerospace, automotive refinish, protective and marine, traffic solutions and industrial coatings | Broad portfolio; segment weights and current valuation must be checked in the latest filing |
| RPM International | NYSE: RPM | Identified as a relevant coatings competitor by PPG and as a key global competitor in Axalta’s 2026 communication | The reviewed material does not establish comparable segment percentages or a current valuation |
| Axalta Coating Systems | NYSE: AXTA | Coatings-focused peer; named with Sherwin-Williams, PPG and RPM as a key global competitor | Its proposed combination with AkzoNobel can materially change the peer set if completed |
| AkzoNobel | Euronext Amsterdam: AKZA | International coatings competitor appearing in PPG’s relevant competitive sets | Listing details and the status of the proposed Axalta transaction require confirmation at the time of purchase |
| Nippon Paint Holdings | Tokyo: 4612 | International coatings competitor named in PPG’s filing | Comparable segment data, U.S. investor access and share-class details are not established here |
PPG Industries: the broadest documented overlap
PPG is the clearest starting point for investors seeking a business that spans both architectural paint and performance coatings. Its 2025 Form 10-K describes architectural products such as paints, wood stains, adhesives, sealants and finishes. Its performance activities include aerospace, automotive refinish, protective and marine, traffic solutions and industrial coatings.

It also names Axalta, RPM, Nippon Paint and AkzoNobel in relevant competitive sets. The lists vary by business, which is important: a company can compete directly in one product category while having little overlap in another.
Scale and capital returns
PPG reported $15.9 billion in 2025 net sales. It said it returned $1.4 billion to shareholders during 2025, consisting of approximately $630 million in dividends and $790 million in share repurchases. These are historical company figures, not a promise of future distributions.
PPG also reports 126 years of uninterrupted annual dividends and 54 consecutive years of dividend increases. A long record can be useful when assessing capital-allocation culture, but it does not eliminate cyclicality, leverage, currency effects or the possibility that future growth differs from the historical record.

When PPG is the logical comparison
- You want architectural exposure combined with industrial and specialty coatings rather than a single end market.
- You prefer a U.S.-listed company with reported dividend and buyback history.
- You are prepared to analyze several businesses instead of treating PPG as a pure-play decorative-paint company.
PPG’s stated purpose, “We protect and beautify the world,” appeared in the chairman and chief executive’s 2025 annual-report message. It is a corporate description, not an independent investment opinion.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAxalta Coating Systems: a coatings-focused peer with transaction risk
Axalta is identified in the available 2026 transaction communication as a key global competitor alongside Sherwin-Williams, PPG and RPM. That makes it a relevant comparison for a reader seeking concentrated coatings exposure rather than a diversified manufacturer whose portfolio includes many adjacent chemicals or materials.
The major issue is corporate action. An SEC-filed communication dated May 15, 2026 describes a proposed Axalta-AkzoNobel merger of equals and states a target closing at the end of 2026. A target date is not evidence that the transaction closed. Regulatory approvals, shareholder votes, financing, closing conditions and later amendments can all change the outcome.
How to analyze Axalta before buying
- Read the latest annual and quarterly filings for revenue by end market, geographic exposure, operating margin and free cash flow.
- Read the most recent merger filing, not an older news report, to identify the current exchange terms, ownership split, conditions and expected timetable.
- Determine whether the share price reflects a completed combination, a probability-weighted deal or the standalone company.
- Compare debt, refinancing needs and expected integration costs with the balance-sheet figures of other candidates.
Axalta can look attractive to an investor seeking a focused coatings business, but transaction uncertainty makes a simple price-to-earnings comparison potentially misleading.
RPM International: a different competitive mix
RPM is included in the relevant peer set by both PPG’s 2025 filing and Axalta’s May 2026 communication. That supports treating RPM as a legitimate paint and coatings alternative, but it does not establish that its segment composition matches Sherwin-Williams or PPG.
The reviewed company materials do not provide comparable segment percentages, current revenue, valuation or geographic mix for RPM. Before using it as a substitute, identify which RPM businesses generate the exposure you want and how much of consolidated results comes from architectural, industrial, specialty or other product categories.

Questions to answer in RPM’s filings
- Which operating segments have the closest exposure to your target market?
- How much revenue is recurring or specification-driven versus tied to construction, maintenance or industrial cycles?
- What are the latest organic-growth, margin, cash-flow and debt trends?
- How does the company’s dividend and acquisition policy compare with your objectives?
RPM is therefore best treated as a differentiated peer, not as a one-for-one replacement for Sherwin-Williams.
AkzoNobel: international exposure and an unsettled transaction
AkzoNobel appears in PPG’s 2025 competitive disclosures as a relevant global competitor. Its Euronext Amsterdam listing gives investors an international alternative, with different currency, market-hours, tax and access considerations from a U.S.-listed stock.
AkzoNobel’s status also intersects with the proposed Axalta combination. The May 15, 2026 Axalta filing describes the deal as a merger of equals with a stated end-of-2026 closing target. Separately, Sherwin-Williams reported in 2026 that its and Nippon Paint Group’s pursuit of AkzoNobel had ended. Those events should not be interpreted as proof that the Axalta transaction completed. Confirm whether the deal is proposed, approved, amended or closed immediately before relying on any post-merger analysis.
International-investor checks
- Verify the exact listing, ticker and share class.
- Check whether your broker offers the relevant exchange and how it handles foreign withholding tax.
- Translate revenue, earnings and dividends into your home currency without treating exchange-rate movements as operating growth.
- Use the latest local filing for segment definitions; labels that look similar across countries may not be economically identical.
Nippon Paint Holdings: a global peer with access caveats
PPG’s filing names Nippon Paint among global competitors. Nippon Paint Holdings trades in Tokyo under 4612, making it a relevant international name for investors who want geographic diversification beyond North American listings.
The available evidence does not establish comparable segment-level financial data, valuation, U.S. investor access or share-class details. Those omissions matter. A stock can be an excellent operating peer yet be impractical for an investor whose broker does not support the exchange or whose mandate limits foreign securities.
Before considering Nippon Paint, review its latest Japanese filings, reporting currency, dividend policy, foreign-ownership rules and the precise security available through your brokerage account.

Choose by exposure, not by company name
If you want architectural and decorative paint
Start with PPG because its filing explicitly includes architectural coatings and identifies Sherwin-Williams as a competitor in that business. Then compare each company’s current architectural revenue, pricing, volume, channel mix and regional housing or renovation exposure. Do not infer that a company is a close decorative-paint substitute merely because it sells some coatings.

PPG’s disclosed aerospace, automotive refinish, protective and marine, traffic and industrial activities provide several routes to performance-coatings exposure. Axalta may appeal to investors seeking a more concentrated coatings business. The correct choice depends on the latest segment margins, customer concentration, cyclicality and capital requirements.
If you want international diversification
AkzoNobel and Nippon Paint provide non-U.S. listings and global peer exposure. Compare currency, tax, liquidity, governance requirements and reporting conventions before comparing headline multiples with U.S. stocks.
If dividends and buybacks matter most
PPG supplies the clearest documented recent capital-return figures in this set: $630 million of dividends and $790 million of repurchases in 2025. Its long dividend record is useful context, but compare current payout ratios, free-cash-flow coverage, debt maturities and share count changes across all candidates using the same reporting period.
If transaction exposure is acceptable
Axalta and AkzoNobel require a separate merger analysis. A proposed transaction can create upside, downside or simply a long period of uncertainty. Keep standalone operating analysis separate from deal speculation.

A practical research process before buying
- Define the exposure. Write down whether you want architectural paint, automotive refinish, aerospace, protective and marine, industrial, specialty or a blend.
- Collect same-period filings. Use each issuer’s latest annual report and most recent quarterly filing. Record revenue, organic growth, operating margin, cash flow, debt and capital returns.
- Normalize segment definitions. Put each company’s businesses into common categories rather than comparing management labels that may cover different products.
- Map distribution. Note company stores, direct sales, dealers, distributors and third-party retail. Distribution intensity can affect pricing power and working capital.
- Separate geography from currency. Record where customers are located and where results are reported. A stronger home currency can reduce translated revenue even when local operations are stable.
- Check corporate actions. Search the latest filing for merger amendments, shareholder votes, regulatory approvals, closing conditions and termination provisions.
- Value on comparable assumptions. Compare enterprise value to forward operating earnings or free cash flow only after aligning fiscal periods, exceptional items, debt and currency.
- Set a disqualifier. Examples include insufficient liquidity, unacceptable foreign-market access, excessive leverage or an end-market mix that does not match your objective.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Calling a peer “the best” without a criterion
There is no evidence here for a universal best alternative or a current expected-return ranking. “Best” must mean something specific, such as the broadest architectural overlap, the highest international exposure, the longest dividend record or the least transaction risk.

Comparing unlike revenue bases
A company with substantial aerospace, automotive or industrial sales should not be valued as though it were a pure decorative-paint producer. Read segment notes before applying an industry multiple.
Treating a proposed merger as completed
The Axalta-AkzoNobel communication described a proposal and a target closing date. Until a later filing confirms completion, analyze both standalone companies and the transaction’s conditions.
Using issuer metrics as forecasts
Sherwin-Williams’ adjusted EPS growth, dividend streak and acquisition count, as well as PPG’s sales and capital-return figures, describe historical company presentations. They do not predict future returns.

Ignoring listing and access details
AkzoNobel and Nippon Paint may involve exchange access, currency conversion, withholding tax and share-class issues that do not arise in the same way for U.S.-listed PPG, RPM or Axalta.
Bottom line for investors
PPG is the most directly documented broad alternative because it competes with Sherwin-Williams in architectural and performance coatings and reports a substantial, diversified portfolio. Axalta is the more concentrated coatings peer but carries material merger-status risk. RPM belongs in a serious peer screen while requiring segment-level investigation. AkzoNobel and Nippon Paint expand the opportunity set internationally, with added listing, currency and transaction considerations.
