LogicGate Risk Cloud MCP and Strike Graph MCP are the clearest strict read-only alternatives to Scytale MCP. A dated comparison of official compliance MCP servers classifies all three as read-only for every connection. Drata and Vanta can be configured for read-only connections, but their servers still expose write or delete capabilities, so they need tighter scope and role controls. Scrut Automation is suitable only when uploading or attaching limited evidence is acceptable.

That distinction matters when an AI client can query controls, audits, risks, policies, tasks, or evidence. “Read-only connection” is not always the same as a server that has no write or delete tools. Before connecting production compliance data, verify the permission boundary, revocation behavior, logging, hosting path, plan availability, and the retention and training terms of the AI client.

What Scytale MCP provides

Scytale announced its Model Context Protocol (MCP) integration on October 13, 2026. In phase one, the server exposes frameworks, audits, controls, monitoring, policies, risks, tasks, and vendors through read-only tools. Scytale states that phase one makes no changes to underlying data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The connection uses OAuth scoped to one company. Scytale also describes audit logging for every call, regional hosting, and compatibility with MCP-compliant clients including Claude, Claude Code, Claude Desktop, ChatGPT, and an internally operated agent. Those details describe Scytale’s launch position; administrators should still confirm the current behavior, regions, and client support in their tenant.

  • BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.

Scytale’s Trust Center lists SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001:2022, GDPR, CSA STAR, and ISO 42001 materials. Current reports and certificates are available under NDA, so a procurement or security review may require a request to Scytale rather than relying on a public download.

How to judge a read-only compliance MCP server

Use these six tests instead of treating a “read-only” label as sufficient:

  • Write boundary: Determine whether every connection is globally read-only, whether read-only is an optional connection mode, or whether the server can upload or alter selected records.
  • Permission enforcement: Check OAuth scopes, administrator enablement, role entitlements, API keys, and token behavior. The MCP permission should not exceed the connected user’s GRC permissions.
  • Individual revocation: Confirm that an administrator can disable one person’s connection without disconnecting the entire organization.
  • Audit trail: Establish whether calls, tool names, user identity, timestamps, and the AI client are recorded. A vendor may log the action as the user while omitting the name of the AI application.
  • Hosting and data path: Identify where the MCP service runs and which external AI client receives the returned compliance data.
  • Availability and plan: Separate generally available functionality from beta or public-preview features and verify the required edition, role, credits, or vendor enablement.

Also ask what “read-only” excludes. A server might prevent edits to controls but still allow evidence uploads, links, comments, exports, or actions that trigger downstream workflows. Treat each tool, not just the product name, as part of the approval decision.

Comparison of Scytale MCP alternatives

Server Write boundary Permission and enablement Revocation Client or availability notes
LogicGate Risk Cloud MCP Classified as read-only for every connection. Administrator turns MCP on; access is limited to certain roles. Hosted deployment can use OAuth or an API key. An MCP Access role entitlement is required. One connection can be revoked. Listed for Claude, Claude Code, Microsoft Copilot Studio, ChatGPT, Cursor, and other supported clients. Included with Risk Cloud API access at no extra cost according to the comparison; confirm current entitlement.
Strike Graph MCP Classified as read-only for every connection. Vendor enables access and limits it to certain roles. Hosted OAuth access is described. One connection can be revoked. Listed for Claude, ChatGPT, and other MCP clients. The comparison associates availability with Scale and Enterprise plans or AI Consumption credits; confirm current terms.
Drata MCP Server supports read, write, and delete actions, but a connection can be configured read-only. Administrator-selected scopes are combined with the user’s role. Verify that every write and delete tool is blocked. One connection can be revoked. Broader platform access; suitability depends on the exact scopes and role.
Vanta MCP Server supports read, write, and delete actions, with a documented read-only connection capability. Review enabled modules and scopes; returned data depends on those modules. One connection can be revoked. Described as public preview or beta, so availability and coverage may change.
Scrut Automation MCP Not strictly read-only: can upload a file or attach a link to an existing evidence item, but does not edit or delete records. Access is limited by the user’s role. One connection can be revoked. Actions are logged like the user’s own actions, although the AI client itself is not recorded.

The comparison above reflects the documented position in the dated review. Plan names, beta status, role names, and client lists are changeable; obtain written confirmation before approving a production integration.

1. LogicGate Risk Cloud MCP: closest strict read-only match

LogicGate is the strongest first choice when the requirement is that an MCP connection cannot modify compliance records. The comparison classifies it as read-only for every connection rather than merely offering a read-only preset on a broader server.

Access model

An administrator must enable MCP, and access is limited to designated roles. The documented deployment is hosted and can use OAuth or an API key. The comparison says an MCP Access role entitlement is required and that Risk Cloud API access includes MCP at no extra cost. Treat that as a configuration and entitlement claim to recheck with LogicGate, not as a universal price promise.

Yubico - YubiKey 5C NFC - Multi-Factor authentication (MFA) Security Key and passkey, Connect via USB-C or NFC, FIDO Certified - Protect Your Online Accounts
  • POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5C NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
  • WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5C NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
  • FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5C NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
  • MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
  • PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts

Clients and revocation

The listed client support includes Claude, Claude Code, Microsoft Copilot Studio, ChatGPT, Cursor, and other MCP-compatible clients. A single connection can be revoked, allowing an administrator to remove one user’s authorization without disabling every connection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When to choose it

  • Use it when the policy requires a server-level read-only boundary rather than relying on prompt instructions.
  • Prefer it for teams that need to remove an individual connection quickly.
  • Confirm that the selected role exposes only the records and fields the user is permitted to see.

2. Strike Graph MCP: another strict read-only option

Strike Graph is the other clear strict read-only alternative in the comparison. Its server is classified as read-only for every connection, so it fits organizations that prohibit an AI integration from changing controls, evidence, tasks, or other GRC records.

Enablement and plans

The vendor enables access, and only certain roles can use it. The comparison describes hosted OAuth access for Claude, ChatGPT, and other MCP clients. It associates the feature with Scale and Enterprise plans or AI Consumption credits. Because plan packaging can change, confirm the exact edition, credit consumption, and regional availability with Strike Graph before committing.

Connection control

One connection can be revoked. During onboarding, document who can authorize the connection, which role it inherits, and the procedure for disabling it. Test revocation with a non-production account so you know how quickly tokens expire and whether an already-running client session stops immediately.

When to choose it

  • Choose it when a vendor-managed enablement process is acceptable.
  • Use it when your approved clients are Claude, ChatGPT, or another MCP client supported by the tenant.
  • Require confirmation that read-only behavior covers every exposed tool, not just the most common query functions.

3. Drata MCP: read-only connection on a broader server

Drata is appropriate only when your team can prove that a specific connection cannot invoke write or delete operations. The server itself supports read, write, and delete actions. A read-only connection is therefore a scoped configuration, not a guarantee that the underlying MCP server has no mutation capability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How permissions are combined

Drata combines administrator-selected scopes with the connected user’s role. Both layers matter: a narrow scope cannot grant access the user’s role lacks, but a permissive scope may expose more operations than your policy allows if the role is too powerful.

Yubico - YubiKey 5 NFC - Multi-Factor authentication (MFA) Security Key and passkey, Connect via USB-A or NFC, FIDO Certified - Protect Your Online Accounts
  • POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5 NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
  • WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5 NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
  • FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5 NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate.

Verification procedure

  1. Create a dedicated test user with the minimum GRC role required for the intended questions.
  2. Have an administrator select only the documented read scopes.
  3. Inspect the client’s discovered tools and record every tool that appears to write, delete, attach, approve, or trigger an action.
  4. Attempt harmless negative tests in a sandbox, such as checking whether a write tool is absent or rejected, rather than modifying production records.
  5. Revoke the single connection and confirm that the token and client session no longer work.

Do not approve Drata merely because the connection screen says “read-only.” Keep the scope configuration, role assignment, tool inventory, and test results in the integration’s access review.

4. Vanta MCP: broad coverage with preview risk

Vanta documents a read-only connection capability, but its MCP server supports read, write, and delete actions. The comparison labels the feature public preview or beta and notes that returned data depends on the modules enabled in the tenant.

What this means operationally

Coverage can vary between two Vanta tenants. A client may see different tools or records depending on enabled modules, role permissions, and the preview release. Treat the returned dataset as a function of configuration, not as a fixed product-wide catalog.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Controls to require

  • Obtain the current preview terms and list of supported modules.
  • Use a least-privilege role and administrator-selected read-only scopes.
  • Capture the tool list after every material configuration change.
  • Set a review date because preview behavior and availability can change without matching generally available documentation.
  • Confirm individual connection revocation and test it before production use.

Vanta can be useful when its module coverage matches your reporting needs, but it demands more change management than a server classified read-only for every connection.

5. Scrut Automation MCP: only for controlled evidence attachment

Scrut Automation occupies a different category. Its documented server can upload a file or attach a link to an existing evidence item. It does not edit or delete records, but those uploads are still writes. It is therefore not an absolute read-only replacement for Scytale.

Audit limitation

Scrut limits access through the user’s role and logs actions as if the user performed them. The comparison says the AI client itself is not recorded. That distinction matters for investigations: an auditor may be able to identify the human account but not whether the action came from an AI client.

When it fits

Use Scrut when the business workflow explicitly includes attaching generated evidence or links and your policy accepts that narrow write boundary. Do not select it for a control that says “the AI integration must never write to the GRC system.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to connect an MCP client without write access

The exact screens differ by vendor, but the approval sequence below prevents the most common mistakes.

  1. Define the allowed questions. List the frameworks, audits, controls, policies, risks, tasks, vendors, and evidence fields the client must read. Exclude unrelated modules.
  2. Select the server category. Start with LogicGate or Strike Graph when a globally read-only server is mandatory. Consider Drata or Vanta only if their scoped read-only modes pass testing. Use Scrut only if evidence attachment is an approved requirement.
  3. Create a dedicated identity. Use an individual or service identity with the least-privilege role. Avoid sharing a privileged administrator token among multiple people.
  4. Enable the vendor control. Complete the administrator enablement, role entitlement, or vendor activation required by the platform. Record the date, approver, tenant, region, and plan.
  5. Authorize the client. Prefer OAuth with a narrowly scoped consent screen. If an API key is supported, store it in the client’s secret manager, set an expiration, and prohibit copying it into prompts or source code.
  6. Inventory tools. Record the names and descriptions exposed after authorization. Flag any tool that can create, update, delete, upload, attach, approve, or trigger workflows.
  7. Run negative tests. In a sandbox, confirm that mutation tools are unavailable or rejected. Do not use production data for exploratory attempts.
  8. Check returned data. Ask for a known control and verify that the client sees only records permitted to the connected identity. Check for sensitive fields that should be masked or excluded.
  9. Validate logs. Confirm where calls appear, which user is named, whether tool names and timestamps are retained, and whether the AI client identity is visible.
  10. Test revocation. Revoke one connection, retry a request, and document how quickly access stops. Repeat after token refresh if the platform supports long-lived sessions.
  11. Approve and monitor. Add the integration to vendor risk, access review, data-flow, and incident-response records. Review scopes and tools after platform updates.

Security and governance questions to resolve first

What data leaves the GRC platform?

An MCP client becomes a data-processing path. Returned controls, audit details, risks, policies, tasks, vendor information, and evidence may be sent to the AI provider. Map the data flow by client, region, subprocessors, retention period, deletion behavior, and support access.

Are prompts and responses retained or used for training?

Check the AI client’s current retention and training terms for the exact account type. A read-only GRC connection prevents changes in the source system; it does not automatically prevent the client from retaining or using retrieved content under its own service terms.

Does the audit trail identify the AI client?

Logging varies. Some services record the call and user but not the application that initiated it. If client identity is absent, preserve MCP gateway logs or client-side logs where policy and privacy rules allow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What happens when an employee leaves?

Because individual revocation is a key differentiator, include MCP connections in offboarding. Disable the user, revoke the connection, rotate API keys if applicable, and verify that cached sessions cannot continue querying data.

Decision guide

Your requirement Best fit Reason
No write or delete capability in any connection LogicGate Risk Cloud MCP or Strike Graph MCP Both are classified as read-only for every connection.
Read-only mode is acceptable if thoroughly tested Drata MCP Scopes and the user role can produce a read-only connection, but the server supports writes and deletes.
Need broad module coverage and can manage preview risk Vanta MCP Read-only connection capability is documented, but the server is broader and the feature is described as beta or public preview.
Need to attach files or links as part of an AI-assisted workflow Scrut Automation MCP Limited evidence uploads are supported; it is not strictly read-only.
Need Scytale-like read access with regional hosting and call logging Scytale MCP, if its current phase-one terms meet your requirements Scytale describes OAuth scoped to one company, regional hosting, and audit logging for every call.

Common failure modes

A “read-only” label hides mutation tools

This occurs with servers that support writes and deletes but offer a read-only connection. Resolve it by inspecting the discovered tool list and testing rejected operations in a sandbox.

The connected role is too powerful

OAuth scope cannot compensate for an over-privileged GRC role. Create a dedicated role that can read only the modules and fields required for the approved use cases.

Revocation is assumed rather than tested

Revoking a user in the GRC platform may not immediately revoke an MCP token. Test a single-connection disablement, token refresh, and an already-open client session.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Preview functionality changes

Beta or public-preview servers can change tool names, modules, and eligibility. Keep a dated inventory and require reapproval after material changes.

Logs identify the person but not the AI application

Scrut’s documented behavior illustrates this gap: actions are logged like the user’s actions, while the AI client itself is not recorded. Add gateway or client telemetry where permitted, and make the limitation explicit in the audit evidence.

Bottom line for a production shortlist

Start evaluation with LogicGate Risk Cloud MCP and Strike Graph MCP when your control objective is absolute read-only access. They are the two alternatives documented as read-only for every connection. Drata and Vanta can work when a scoped read-only connection is validated against the actual tool set, role, modules, and revocation process, but their broader server capabilities increase the burden of proof. Scrut Automation belongs in a separate category for controlled evidence attachment, not strict read-only access.

Whichever server you choose, treat the AI client as a new data processor and access path. Record scopes, roles, tool names, region, retention terms, training terms, logging behavior, plan status, and the tested procedure for revoking one connection. Recheck those facts before connecting production compliance data because vendor capabilities and availability can change.
