When NIQ is not the right first choice
NIQ may be excessive if your only requirement is a handful of stores’ traffic counts, or if you need a narrowly operational price engine and already own the required market data. It can also be a poor fit if your target geography or channel is not covered at the required granularity. Make coverage verification a contract checkpoint, not a sales assumption.

Ask to see the assumptions behind each simulation: elasticity estimation period, treatment of stockouts, competitor variables, promotion types, price zones and confidence intervals. A scenario is a decision aid, not a guarantee.
Assortment Analytics
Circana Assortment Analytics identifies product mix by category, store group and geography. It combines POS data, elasticity models, historical analysis and store-level insights to support ranging and localization. This is especially relevant when a single national assortment underperforms because neighborhoods, store formats or missions differ.
Circana’s 2026 corporate webpage reports $5.8 trillion in global consumer spend, 42 million actively tracked consumer packaged goods and general merchandise items, and 477,000 stores. These are vendor-reported scope figures, not independent measurements of accuracy or commercial impact. Verify which portions apply to your market, category and use case.

When Circana beats NIQ or Scanntech
Choose Circana when the decision requires repeated “what-if” analysis: localized assortment, price-zone design, promotion calendars or profit-aware trade planning. Limitations to test
Request examples using your own categories and retailer formats. Check whether the assortment workflow recommends delists, replacements and space implications, or only reports historical performance. Also test how quickly new products, pack changes and retailer feeds enter the model. Those operational details determine whether a sophisticated analysis can be used in weekly planning.

Specialist alternatives for narrower problems
Shopper-path and omnichannel intelligence
The 2026 Snipp landscape groups Stackline and Placer.ai under shopper intelligence and path-to-purchase analytics. These tools can help answer where shoppers discover products, how they move through channels or which locations draw visits. They are useful when the missing signal is audience behavior or trade-area movement rather than a syndicated view of SKU sales.
Clarify whether the data is observed, modelled, panel-based or supplied by retailers. Check channel coverage, geographic resolution, refresh cadence, identity or privacy constraints and whether the output can be joined to your product hierarchy.
Price-optimization platforms
Pricefx, Revionics and Competera are grouped in the same landscape under price optimization. Their value is usually in operational workflows: rules, recommendations, approvals, price lists and execution. They may be preferable when a retailer already has reliable internal sales data and needs a scalable pricing process.
Do not assume that a price engine replaces market intelligence. Ask whether competitor prices, external demand signals, promotion history and elasticity are included, licensed separately or expected from your own data. A well-designed workflow with weak inputs can produce consistently precise-looking but unreliable recommendations.

1. Data coverage
Document the retailers, channels, geographies, store formats and categories you require. Confirm SKU and store granularity, product hierarchy, new-item onboarding, stockout treatment and refresh cadence. Monthly data can support strategic trend analysis; weekly or daily data may be necessary for promotion execution.

2. Primary signal
Separate POS sales and market share from traffic, shopper paths, loyalty behavior and price observations. Select the platform whose strongest signal matches the decision. Adding a traffic specialist will not solve missing competitor-price data, and adding a market panel will not reveal entrance conversion.
3. Decision workflows
List the actions users must take: set prices, evaluate promotions, localize assortment, forecast demand, monitor competitors, close distribution gaps or improve store conversion. Ask vendors to demonstrate the complete workflow from data ingestion to an approved action, not just a dashboard.
4. Actionability
Look for scenario simulation, recommendations, alerts, exception queues and export or activation options. A report that identifies a problem is different from a system that proposes a price, explains the expected effect and sends the approved result to an execution system.
5. Integration and governance
Map POS, ERP, loyalty, e-commerce, product-master and promotion feeds. Test product matching, retailer normalization, duplicate handling, missing data and audit trails. Require explainable definitions for share, distribution, baseline sales and elasticity. Establish who can change hierarchies, approve assumptions and correct bad feeds.
6. Commercial fit
Determine whether the offer is self-serve, sales-led, modular or a suite. The supplied vendor pages do not state comparable public prices for these alternatives. Request a price that separates license, data rights, implementation, connectors, user seats, refresh frequency and optional modules. Verify renewal terms and whether adding retailers or countries changes the fee.
A practical selection process
- Write the decision brief. State the decisions, users, target countries, retailers, categories, required granularity and acceptable refresh delay.
- Build a coverage matrix. Mark each vendor’s retailer, channel, geography, store, SKU and time coverage as confirmed, partial or unavailable. Keep vendor claims separate from contractual commitments.
- Provide a controlled sample. Use a representative category with promotions, pack changes and at least one regional variation. Ask each provider to show the same questions and outputs.
- Test definitions. Reconcile a sample of sales, prices, products, stores and promotions against your internal records. Investigate differences instead of averaging them away.
- Run decision scenarios. Require a price change, a promotion evaluation, an assortment change and, if relevant, a traffic-to-conversion analysis. Record inputs, assumptions, outputs and how long each task takes.
- Review governance. Check access controls, audit history, data-retention terms, privacy handling, model explanations and the process for correcting source data.
- Model total cost. Include implementation, data integration, taxonomy work, training, analyst time and the cost of adding countries, retailers or users.
- Define pilot success. Measure data completeness, time to answer, adoption by the intended users and the number of decisions that reach execution. Do not use an unverified vendor coverage figure as the success metric.
