Google Photos is the best general starting point for quick Android photo edits because it combines automatic suggestions, crop and perspective correction, tonal controls, and object removal. Galaxy owners who only need routine adjustments can stay in Samsung Gallery, while compatible Samsung phones can use Galaxy Enhance-X for targeted fixes such as shadow, moiré, blur, and low-detail problems. Snapseed offers another broadly available editor, and Lightroom is worth investigating when you need a more advanced workflow.
No alternative reproduces every Enhance-X feature on every phone. Android version, RAM, Pixel-only access, Samsung software requirements, and whether a tool is installed inside the editor all affect what you will actually see.
Which Android photo editor should you choose?
Use the edit you need as the deciding factor rather than choosing an app by brand name:
- Fast automatic improvement: Start with Google Photos’ Enhance, Dynamic, or AI Enhance suggestions.
- Removing a person or distraction: Use Google Photos’ Magic Eraser when it is available on your device.
- Basic Galaxy corrections: Samsung Gallery handles filters, color, cropping, and perspective without installing another app.
- Shadows, photographed screens, blur, or low detail on a compatible Galaxy: Galaxy Enhance-X remains the Samsung-focused choice.
- Manual, creative adjustments on many Android brands: Snapseed is an option, although current feature and version details should be checked in the Play Store.
- A more advanced editing workflow: Investigate Adobe Lightroom and confirm its current Android features and plan boundaries before committing.

Google Photos: the broadest first alternative
Google’s Android editor is the most useful first stop when you want one app that covers automatic enhancement and ordinary manual corrections. Its documented tools include suggested Enhance, Dynamic, and AI Enhance adjustments. AI Enhance can produce multiple results for you to compare rather than applying only one fixed preset. Open the editor from a photo, review the suggested result, and keep it only if it improves the image.
For manual work, Google Photos provides crop and straighten controls, perspective adjustment, brightness, contrast, saturation, warmth, and related tonal settings. This makes it suitable for correcting a tilted building, balancing a dim exposure, or making colors less flat without learning a full desktop-style workflow. Removing unwanted objects
Magic Eraser lets you select distractions in a photo and ask the editor to remove them. It is useful for a stray person in the background, a sign, or a small object that draws attention away from the subject. The result depends on the surrounding pixels: a simple background gives the editor more information than a detailed fence, patterned wall, or overlapping subject. Treat it as a cleanup tool, not a guarantee that a complex scene will be reconstructed perfectly.

- Open Google Photos and select the image.
- Tap Edit.
- Try Suggested options such as Enhance, Dynamic, or AI Enhance when they appear.
- For a specific correction, choose the relevant tool, such as Crop, Adjust, Perspective, or Magic Eraser.
- Preview the result and use the comparison control when available.
- Choose the save option offered by the editor. Google distinguishes between saving changes to the original and saving a copy; the available choice depends on the edit.
Device checks before you look for a tool
Google says most editing features need Android 8.0 or later and at least 3 GB of RAM. Certain functions have higher memory requirements of 4 GB or 6 GB, and some features are exclusive to Pixel phones. If a control is missing, update Google Photos and your phone first, then check the device requirement rather than assuming the app is broken. Some tools may also need to be installed from within the editor before they appear.

Face touch-up availability
Google’s newer touch-up rollout adds face-specific Heal, Smooth, Under-eye, Iris, Teeth, Eyebrow, and Lip controls. The announcement says the rollout is gradual and requires Android 9.0 or later with at least 4 GB of RAM. These requirements mean the controls are not guaranteed on every Android phone. Samsung Gallery: stay inside the Galaxy phone
Samsung Gallery is the sensible alternative when your goal is a normal edit rather than an AI restoration. Samsung’s guide documents built-in filters, customizable filters, color mixing, perspective changes, and additional photo and video options. You can therefore correct color, apply a look, or adjust geometry without moving the picture to another editor.
Typical Gallery workflow
- Open Gallery and select a photo.
- Tap the Edit pencil icon.
- Choose a filter or open the adjustment controls for color and tone.
- Use the crop or perspective tools to correct framing and geometry.
- Preview the change, then save according to the options shown on your Galaxy phone.
Samsung changes the interface and available controls between Galaxy models and software releases. If a menu in an online tutorial is absent, use the labels on your device rather than assuming every Galaxy has the same Gallery build. Enhance-X is not a universal Android replacement for a general editor. Samsung’s current support article lists it for Samsung phones running Android 14 and One UI 6.0 or later, distributed through Galaxy Store. On an eligible phone, its listed options include Brighten, Sharpen, Restore picture, and Increase resolution.

Samsung’s earlier announcement describes the app’s intended corrections in more detail: one-tap enhancement, HDR, moiré correction for photographed displays, shadow removal, and AI refinement of noise, blur, and low detail. It was designed for situations such as an unwanted stray shadow, lens distortion, or an uneven lighting balance spoiling an otherwise useful image. Read the announcement at Samsung Newsroom’s Enhance-X description, and use the newer Samsung support page for compatibility.
What Enhance-X is good at
- Shadow correction: useful when a face or object is darkened by a nearby shadow.
- Moiré reduction: intended for patterns that appear when you photograph a display or other fine grid.
- Blur and noise refinement: can attempt to make a soft or noisy image look cleaner.
- Resolution increase and restoration: useful when you need a larger output, but these processes cannot guarantee recovery of detail that was never captured.
What to do when Enhance-X is missing
- Open Settings and check the Android version and One UI version.
- Confirm that the phone meets Android 14 and One UI 6.0 or later.
- Look for Enhance-X in Galaxy Store and install the current listing if the phone is supported.
- If the store does not offer it, do not sideload an unverified package merely to bypass the eligibility check; use Gallery or Google Photos instead.
Snapseed: a separate editor with cautious expectations
T3 reported in May 2026 that Snapseed had received an Android update and was available across phone brands. That makes it a reasonable app to investigate if you want an editor that is not tied to Samsung or Pixel hardware. However, the available reporting does not establish a current exact version, supported file formats, present price, or one-to-one feature parity with Enhance-X.
Install it from the Play Store, inspect the tools shown on your device, and confirm how it saves edited files before making it your main workflow. Do not assume that a feature described in an older Snapseed guide is unchanged in the current Android release. The May 2026 report is at T3.
Adobe Lightroom: investigate for a deeper workflow
Lightroom is a possible choice for readers who want more control than one-tap enhancement and basic phone adjustments. Android Central includes Lightroom among Android AI photo-editing options, which supports considering it as an advanced alternative rather than establishing a particular current feature set.

Choose the least complicated tool that matches the defect. The steps below avoid treating every problem as a resolution problem.
For a shadow across a subject
- On a compatible Samsung phone, try Enhance-X’s shadow-oriented enhancement or Brighten option.
- On other phones, open the image in Google Photos and use Adjust controls for brightness, shadows, contrast, and warmth if those controls are present.
- Use a local object-removal tool only when the shadow is a distinct distraction; removing it can damage nearby edges.
- Save a copy when the editor offers that option so the original remains available for a different correction.
Brightening a shadow can also reveal sensor noise and reduce contrast. A stronger global exposure change may therefore look worse than a modest local correction.
For a blurry or low-detail photo
- Start with the highest-resolution original, not a screenshot or repeatedly compressed copy.
- Try Enhance-X’s Sharpen, Restore picture, or Increase resolution if the Samsung phone meets its requirements.
- On Google Photos, check whether an enhancement suggestion or AI Enhance result is available.
- Compare the result at the image’s intended viewing size. Excessive sharpening can create halos around text and edges.
- Keep the original file. AI restoration can invent plausible-looking texture; it cannot reliably recreate detail that the camera never recorded.
For a photographed screen pattern
Use Enhance-X’s documented moiré correction on an eligible Galaxy device. If you do not have access to Enhance-X, crop and perspective-correct the image in Google Photos or Gallery, then try modest sharpening. General sharpening is not the same as dedicated moiré correction and may make the pattern more obvious.

Compatibility, saving, and privacy checks
Before editing a batch of important photos, verify four practical details:
- Operating system and memory: Google’s baseline is Android 8.0 and 3 GB RAM for most tools, with higher requirements for some features; touch-up needs Android 9.0 and 4 GB RAM. Enhance-X requires Android 14 and One UI 6.0 or later according to Samsung’s current support listing.
- Hardware-specific access: Some Google Photos functions are Pixel-only, while Enhance-X is intended for supported Samsung phones.
- Tool installation: Google Photos may ask you to install individual editing tools from inside the editor.
- Original versus copy: Google Photos distinguishes between replacing the original and saving a copy, and the choice depends on the edit. Check the save dialog before confirming.
Availability can change as Google, Samsung, and app developers roll out features. A missing control is often an eligibility or rollout issue rather than a mistake in your editing steps.
A practical decision guide
Choose Google Photos when
- You use more than one Android brand or want a broadly supported starting point.
- You need crop, perspective, tonal adjustments, suggestions, and object cleanup in one place.
- Your phone meets the relevant Android and RAM requirements.
Choose Samsung Gallery when
- You own a Galaxy phone and only need filters, color, crop, or perspective corrections.
- You prefer not to install another editor.
- You want a straightforward local Gallery workflow and your model exposes the needed controls.
Choose Galaxy Enhance-X when
- Your Samsung phone runs Android 14 with One UI 6.0 or later.
- The specific problem is a shadow, moiré, blur, noise, low detail, or a need for targeted enhancement.
- You understand that restoration and upscaling do not guarantee genuinely recovered detail.
Investigate Snapseed when
- You want a separate editor that is reported to work across Android phone brands.
- You are willing to verify the current Android release and tools yourself.
Investigate Lightroom when
- You need a more advanced editing environment than the quick-edit tools above.
- You are prepared to check current Android capabilities, account requirements, and paid-plan boundaries before importing a large library.
Official descriptions in context
Samsung describes Enhance-X as an app that lets users “freely customize and remaster their photos,” particularly when a stray shadow, lens distortion, or lighting imbalance damages an otherwise good shot. Google’s Android photo-editing explanation similarly says, “Computational photography, which uses software to enhance photos, helps you take clearer pictures when the conditions aren’t perfect.” Those descriptions explain the role of enhancement tools, but neither is a promise that an AI edit will reproduce missing photographic detail.
