Xbox Game Pass Ultimate is the closest broad replacement for PlayStation Plus Premium if you can play on Xbox, a Windows PC, or a supported cloud device. Microsoft lists more than 500 games, day-one releases, EA Play, Fortnite Crew, Ubisoft+ Classics, online console multiplayer, and cloud gaming. It is not a PS5 subscription, however: a PS5 owner who has no Xbox, PC, or supported cloud device cannot use it as a direct replacement.
For a Nintendo player, Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack is the strongest platform-specific value, especially for classic games and selected downloadable content. EA Play suits players who mainly want Electronic Arts franchises, while Ubisoft+ is aimed at people who prefer Ubisoft releases and related add-on content. The right choice depends on your hardware, preferred publishers, need for online multiplayer, appetite for day-one games, and tolerance for catalogs changing over time.
At a glance: which subscription fits you?
The services below do not compete on identical terms. One is a broad multi-platform catalog, one is a Nintendo platform membership, and two concentrate on a single publisher. Prices shown are United States figures listed by the companies in 2026; availability and features can differ by country, plan, platform, and date.

| Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack | Switch owners wanting classic libraries and selected DLC | Nintendo Switch | Online play, GameCube, Nintendo 64, Game Boy Advance, and Genesis libraries, plus selected upgrade packs and DLC | $49.99 per year individual; $79.99 per year family |
| EA Play | Players focused on EA franchises | Supported EA platforms and storefronts | Unlimited Play List access, trials of selected new games for up to 10 hours, monthly rewards, and 10% off EA digital purchases | $5.99 per month or $39.99 per year in the US |
| Ubisoft+ | Players focused on Ubisoft games and extra content | Supported Ubisoft platforms | Access to Ubisoft’s latest games and additional content, subject to the selected offering | Current US price was not stated on the cited Ubisoft page; verify before subscribing |
| PlayStation Plus Premium | Baseline for comparison | PlayStation consoles and supported streaming locations | Game Catalog, Classics Catalog, game trials, cloud streaming, Ubisoft+ Classics, monthly games, online multiplayer, discounts, cloud storage, and Share Play | $19.99 monthly, $54.99 every three months, or $159.99 annually in the US |
“Best” therefore means best match, not the service with the largest headline number. A family Switch membership can be cheaper per person than an individual plan, while a publisher subscription can be wasteful if you rarely play that publisher’s games.

What PlayStation Plus Premium already provides
PlayStation Plus Premium is the reference point for this comparison. Sony lists three US billing options: $19.99 per month, $54.99 every three months, and $159.99 per year. Premium combines several types of access that competitors split across different products.
- Game Catalog: a rotating selection of downloadable PlayStation games.
- Classics Catalog: older games from earlier PlayStation generations.
- Game trials: time-limited opportunities to try selected titles.
- Cloud streaming: where Sony supports it for your territory, plan, and title.
- Ubisoft+ Classics: a curated Ubisoft collection included with the plan.
- Monthly games, online multiplayer, discounts, cloud storage, and Share Play.
Sony says streaming needs at least 5 Mbps, or 15 Mbps for 1080p, and that streaming availability varies by territory, plan, and time. The catalog is not an ownership library: access can end when your membership expires or when Sony removes a game. Those two limitations—regional streaming and a changing catalog—also matter when you evaluate alternatives.
Xbox Game Pass Ultimate: the closest broad alternative
What you receive
Microsoft describes Game Pass Ultimate as a multi-device subscription with more than 500 games, day-one releases, EA Play, Fortnite Crew, Ubisoft+ Classics, online console multiplayer, and cloud gaming. That combination most closely mirrors Premium’s mix of a large catalog, online access, and streaming, while adding day-one availability for included releases.
Recommended Free Tools
The catalog spans Xbox consoles and Windows PC, with cloud play on supported devices. Microsoft cautions that titles, features, and availability vary by time, region, plan, and platform. A game appearing in the catalog today is not a permanent purchase; Microsoft states that games remain available only while your subscription is active and the title remains in the library.
Why it is the best fit for many switchers
- Multiple ways to play: you can use an Xbox, a Windows PC, or a supported cloud device instead of being tied to one console.
- Day-one access: included new releases can reduce the need to buy every first-party launch separately.
- Publisher extras: EA Play and Ubisoft+ Classics broaden the catalog without requiring separate memberships for those included selections.
- Online console multiplayer: the plan covers the multiplayer function that console players commonly expect from a premium membership.
- Cloud option: you can play supported games without installing them locally, subject to device, region, title, and plan limits.
When it is not a PS5 replacement
Game Pass Ultimate does not add Xbox or PC catalogs to a PlayStation 5. If your only gaming hardware is a PS5, subscribing does not provide access to Xbox games on that console. It becomes practical when you also have an Xbox, a Windows PC, or a supported cloud setup and a reliable connection. A PS5 owner who wants to remain entirely within Sony’s ecosystem should compare Premium’s catalog and trials with individual game purchases rather than assume Game Pass is interchangeable.
Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack: the value choice for Switch and classics
What the Expansion Pack adds
Nintendo’s Expansion Pack combines Switch online play with libraries of GameCube, Nintendo 64, Game Boy Advance, and Genesis games. It also includes selected upgrade packs and downloadable content. The appeal is platform-specific: these are Nintendo’s own classic systems and Switch add-ons, not a general replacement for a modern multi-publisher catalog.
The US individual membership costs $49.99 per year, and the family membership costs $79.99 per year. The family option can make sense when several people in one household need online access, provided they can use the same family membership arrangement under Nintendo’s account rules.

Who should choose it
- Switch owners who primarily want online multiplayer and Nintendo’s retro libraries.
- Players seeking a lower annual outlay than Premium’s US annual price.
- Households that can share the family plan across multiple Nintendo accounts.
- Anyone interested in the specific GameCube, N64, GBA, or Genesis collections and included DLC.
It is a poor fit if your priority is day-one access to a broad selection of third-party games, PC play, or cloud gaming. Nintendo’s service is best understood as an online membership with curated classic software and selected expansions, not as an all-you-can-play equivalent to Game Pass.
EA Play: a focused subscription for EA franchises
Included benefits
EA lists US pricing of $5.99 per month or $39.99 per year. Membership provides unlimited access to the EA Play List, trials of selected new games for up to 10 hours, monthly rewards, and a 10% discount on eligible EA digital purchases.
The Play List is the central benefit. It is useful when most of your time goes to EA series and when you would otherwise buy several EA releases or add-ons. The trial feature is different from full catalog access: a selected new game may be playable for up to 10 hours, but that does not mean every new EA release is included in full on launch day.
Advantages and limits
- Advantages: the low annual price, a targeted back catalog, time-limited trials, rewards, and a purchase discount.
- Limits: the catalog is publisher-specific, the trial allowance applies only to selected games, and access depends on supported platforms and the title remaining in the Play List.
EA Play is usually a better complement to a console you already own than a complete replacement for Premium. Choose it when the publisher focus is a benefit rather than a restriction.
Ubisoft+: a specialist option for Ubisoft players
What it is designed to do
Ubisoft’s official store describes Ubisoft+ as a subscription for the company’s latest games and additional content. That makes it relevant to players who follow Ubisoft franchises closely and want access to the publisher’s releases and extras through the supported offering.
The cited Ubisoft page did not expose a current US price, so check the live offer for your country, platform, and tier before committing. Do not assume that a price or feature shown in one territory applies elsewhere.
When Ubisoft+ makes sense
- You regularly play several Ubisoft series and would otherwise purchase them individually.
- You value included add-on content associated with the subscription’s current tier.
- You are comfortable with a publisher catalog rather than a cross-publisher library.
Ubisoft+ is not the economical default for a mixed library. If you play only one Ubisoft game occasionally, buying that title may cost less than maintaining a recurring subscription.

Cloud gaming and playing without a console
What Premium offers
Premium includes cloud streaming in locations where Sony supports it. Sony specifies a minimum connection of 5 Mbps and 15 Mbps for 1080p streaming. Those figures describe the network threshold, not a guarantee of consistent performance; distance to the service, Wi-Fi congestion, device capability, and regional availability still affect play.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →What Game Pass offers
Game Pass Ultimate includes cloud gaming on supported devices. Microsoft says cloud limits and availability vary by plan, platform, region, and time. This makes Ultimate the clearest alternative for someone asking to play subscription games without owning the service’s console, but you still need a supported device, an available title, and a connection capable of sustained game streaming.
Other services
Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, EA Play, and Ubisoft+ should not be assumed to provide the same broad cloud option. Their principal benefits are Switch software and online play, an EA catalog and trials, or Ubisoft content. Confirm any platform-specific streaming feature in the current offer before purchasing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Catalog breadth, release timing, and access risk
| Decision factor | How the services differ |
|---|---|
| Catalog breadth | Game Pass Ultimate is the broadest multi-publisher option in this comparison. Premium combines current and classic PlayStation selections. Nintendo emphasizes its own classic systems and selected DLC. EA Play and Ubisoft+ concentrate on one publisher each. |
| New-release timing | Microsoft lists day-one releases for Ultimate. EA Play offers up-to-10-hour trials of selected new games, not universal full-game launch access. Premium, Nintendo, and Ubisoft timing depends on each title and the service’s current catalog terms. |
| Streaming | Premium and Ultimate include streaming where supported; the exact device, territory, title, and plan conditions differ. The other services should be evaluated primarily for local play and publisher access. |
| Ownership | None of these memberships transfers game ownership. When a subscription ends, or a title leaves a catalog, you need an active entitlement or a separate purchase to continue. |
Catalog churn is the practical risk people notice after subscribing. Keep a list of games you are midway through, check removal notices, and buy a title if you want permanent access. Discounts included with some plans can reduce the cost of keeping a favorite game after it leaves.
How to choose the right alternative
- List the hardware you will actually use. Select Xbox Game Pass Ultimate only if Xbox, Windows PC, or a supported cloud device is available. Select Nintendo’s membership only if you play on Switch. Treat EA Play and Ubisoft+ as add-ons for their supported ecosystems.
- Write down the five games or series you most want. Check whether each is included now, available only as a trial, or absent. A large catalog is irrelevant if it does not contain your preferred games.
- Decide whether day-one access matters. If yes, Ultimate has the clearest stated advantage in this comparison. If you mainly play older games, Nintendo’s classic libraries or Premium’s Classics Catalog may be more relevant.
- Measure your need for online multiplayer. Console multiplayer is explicitly included with Premium and Ultimate, and Switch online play is part of Nintendo’s membership. Publisher subscriptions should not be treated as a substitute for a platform’s online membership unless the current terms say so.
- Compare the complete billing period. Use the annual figures where you expect to stay subscribed for a year. Consider family eligibility for Nintendo, and remember that a low publisher-subscription price can still be poor value if you play only one included game.
- Check streaming eligibility before paying. Confirm your country, device, plan, and target games. For Premium, test whether your connection meets Sony’s 5 Mbps minimum and 15 Mbps 1080p guideline; for Ultimate, verify that the games and cloud devices you need are supported.
- Plan for games leaving. If a game is important, track its catalog status and use any included discount or a sale to purchase it before your subscription lapses.
Common pitfalls and how to avoid them
Confusing a catalog with ownership
Subscription access is conditional. A downloaded game is not necessarily playable after the membership ends, and a title can leave while your membership remains active. Keep saves backed up through the platform’s supported storage and budget for purchases of long-term favorites.

Ignoring regional terms
Prices in this article are US figures where stated. Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo, EA, and Ubisoft can offer different catalogs, tiers, currencies, and streaming support in other markets. Check the storefront for your account’s country rather than converting a US price and assuming the features match.
Paying for overlapping benefits
Ultimate already lists EA Play and Ubisoft+ Classics. Adding a separate publisher subscription may duplicate part of the catalog unless you specifically need games or content outside the included tier. Review the exact titles and extras before stacking memberships.
Choosing by game count alone
“500+ games” is a useful scale indicator, not a promise that every desired title is included. A smaller catalog of classics can be more valuable to a Switch owner, and a publisher catalog can be better for a committed fan than a larger mixed library.
Quick Recap
Bottom line by player type
- Best broad replacement: Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, when you have Xbox, Windows PC, or supported cloud access and want day-one games plus online play.
- Best for Switch and classic games: Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, especially for households that can use the family membership.
- Best for EA-heavy players: EA Play, provided the Play List and selected trials cover the games you actually play.
- Best for Ubisoft-heavy players: Ubisoft+, after checking the current tier, price, territory, and included extras.
- Best for a PS5-only setup: PlayStation Plus Premium remains the direct platform match because the alternatives do not add their console catalogs to PlayStation.
