There is no universal OneDrive replacement. Choose Google One if your files already live with Gmail, Google Photos, and Drive; choose iCloud+ for an Apple household; choose Dropbox when cross-device syncing, sharing, and deleted-file recovery are priorities; and choose Proton Drive or Sync.com when provider-stated end-to-end encryption is the deciding factor. Keep Microsoft 365 Personal in the comparison if you use Office, because its 1 TB of storage is bundled with the applications.
Quick shortlist: which OneDrive alternative fits you?
Cloud storage is more than a disk quota. Your choice affects where email attachments and photos consume space, which devices have first-class apps, how family members share a plan, what collaboration tools are available, and how easily deleted files can be recovered. Start with the ecosystem you already use, then check capacity, privacy, recovery, and the complete annual cost.
| Best fit | Service | Important facts | Main qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google users | Google One | 15 GB free; paid tiers shown from 100 GB upward; storage is shared by Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos; sharing with up to five people | Prices and plan names vary by country; the referenced page rendered in Japanese locale |
| Apple households | iCloud+ | 50 GB to 12 TB plans; family sharing with up to five other members | Best integrated with Apple devices; compare non-Apple needs before switching |
| Syncing and recovery | Dropbox | Individual Standard lists 2 TB for $9.99 per month and 30 days to restore deleted files | Do not confuse individual terms with team plans shown on the same page |
| Provider-stated encrypted storage | Proton Drive | 5 GB free; 200 GB Drive Plus for $4.99 per month; Proton says files are end-to-end encrypted | Encryption and provider-access statements are Proton claims, not an independent audit |
| Encrypted cross-platform service | Sync.com | Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, and browser access; Sync describes the service as end-to-end encrypted | A dependable current US personal-plan price was not established |
| Office users comparing total value | Microsoft 365 Personal | 1 TB plus Microsoft 365 apps for $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year in the US; Basic lists 100 GB for $1.99 per month or $19.99 per year | Storage-only comparisons understate the bundle’s value if you use the apps |
What to compare before moving your files
Device and service fit
List every device and service that touches your files: phones, tablets, desktop operating systems, camera imports, email attachments, and office documents. A service that fits your current ecosystem can avoid duplicate apps and manual exports. Google counts Drive, Gmail, and Photos against one account quota. iCloud+ is designed around Apple devices and a Family Sharing group. Sync.com explicitly lists Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, and browser access. These are different models even when the advertised storage number looks similar.

Ask whether the quota is only for files or also for mail and photos. A 100 GB allowance can disappear quickly when a Gmail inbox and Google Photos library share it. Family sharing can make a larger plan economical, but it also means one subscription serves several people’s usage. Google says plans can be shared with up to five other people; Apple lists sharing with up to five other family members. Confirm each person’s account and the way storage is allocated before migrating.

Sharing and collaboration
Identify whether you need simple download links, shared folders, simultaneous document editing, or permission controls for clients. The official plan pages do not provide a uniform feature benchmark, so do not assume that an identical quota delivers identical collaboration. Test a representative shared folder and an office document with the people who will use it.
Privacy and encryption language
Read security wording precisely. Proton says Drive files are end-to-end encrypted and describes storage as inaccessible to Proton. Sync describes its service as end-to-end encrypted and says it does not track, share, or sell app-usage data. Those statements come from the providers; they are not an independent security evaluation. Encryption also affects practical features such as search, previews, sharing, and account recovery, so test the workflows you require rather than treating a label as a complete comparison.
Recovery and backup scope
Syncing mirrors changes, including accidental deletions, across devices. A separate backup protects against a wider set of failures. Check the documented restoration period and version-history behavior for your chosen plan. Dropbox’s individual Standard listing specifies 30 days to restore deleted files. The other cited plan pages do not establish a comparable restoration window, so treat their recovery limits as something to verify directly before relying on them for backup.

Compare the same billing period and include applications you would otherwise buy. The Microsoft US page publishes both monthly and annual prices, while several other pages show a monthly figure only. Taxes, country, promotional terms, and billing cadence can change the amount at checkout. Record the recurring price, the storage actually available to your account, and the value of bundled software in one worksheet.
Google One: the natural move for Gmail, Photos, and Drive users
What you get
Google states that a free account includes 15 GB. The paid tiers shown on its pricing page include 100 GB, 200 GB, 400 GB, 2 TB, 5 TB, and higher-storage AI plans. All of that account storage is shared across Google Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos, rather than being three independent allowances. Plans can be shared with up to five other people.

Who should choose it
Google One is the most coherent replacement when your documents are already in Drive, your camera uploads use Google Photos, and Gmail is consuming part of the same quota. Staying in that ecosystem avoids moving those services separately. It is also a practical family option when several people already have Google accounts and can share one plan.
What to verify
The referenced page rendered in Japanese locale during the current check, so verify your country’s currency, plan names, taxes, and availability immediately before subscribing. Calculate existing Gmail and Photos usage first; otherwise a seemingly generous file quota may provide less free space than expected. If you need desktop synchronization or collaboration behavior beyond Google’s normal apps, test those workflows with a sample folder before a full migration.
iCloud+: the strongest fit for an Apple household
Current listed plans
| Storage | Listed price |
|---|---|
| 50 GB | $0.99 per month |
| 200 GB | $2.99 per month |
| 2 TB | $9.99 per month |
| 6 TB | $29.99 per month |
| 12 TB | $59.99 per month |
These are the prices listed on Apple’s page at the 2026 check and are primarily US-dollar figures. Apple says a plan can be shared with up to five other family members.
Why it works well for Apple users
iCloud+ is designed around Apple accounts, iPhone and iPad backups, Mac files, and Apple Photos. A household already using those devices can keep account management and family sharing in one place. The 2 TB, 6 TB, and 12 TB options also provide a clear path for large photo libraries.
Where to be cautious
Do not treat iCloud+ as a universal cross-platform substitute without checking every non-Apple device and workflow. If a Windows computer, Android phone, or mixed-family setup is central to your use, confirm app and browser access and test a shared folder before moving your only copy. Apple’s page does not establish a cross-provider benchmark for collaboration, deleted-file recovery, or version history.

Dropbox: a practical choice for sync, sharing, and recovery
Individual plan facts
Dropbox’s plans page lists an individual Standard plan with 2 TB for $9.99 per month. It also lists access across devices and 30 days to restore deleted files. That restoration period is a concrete advantage when accidental deletion is a frequent risk.
Recommended Free Tools
When Dropbox makes sense
Choose Dropbox when a mixed-device group needs a familiar folder that behaves consistently on computers and phones, or when sharing links and restoring recently deleted content matter more than integration with a particular email or photo service. A 2 TB individual allowance can also be easier to reason about than a quota shared with mail and photos.
Plan-label warning
The same page displays team plans. Confirm that the price, storage, user count, and recovery terms you are reading belong to the individual Standard plan, not a team offering. The cited information does not establish a longer recovery window, independent backup, or a measured speed advantage, so keep a separate backup for irreplaceable files.
Proton Drive: privacy-first storage with a small free tier
Published quota and price
Proton’s pricing page lists 5 GB free storage and a 200 GB Drive Plus plan at $4.99 per month. The figures are provider-listed snapshots and can vary by geography, tax, promotion, or billing cadence.
How Proton describes its privacy model
Proton says files on Drive are end-to-end encrypted and describes the stored data as inaccessible to Proton. In practical terms, that is a provider-stated privacy promise rather than a result from an independent audit cited here. Decide whether the model fits your needs for search, previews, sharing, and account recovery, then test those operations with non-critical files.

- Easily store and access 4TB of content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal

- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Who should consider it
Proton Drive is a strong candidate when reducing provider access to file contents is more important than maximizing free capacity. The 5 GB free tier is useful for evaluating the service, but a large existing library will require a paid plan or another destination. The available plan information does not establish a specific deleted-file restoration period or a performance comparison.
Sync.com: cross-platform encryption claims, with price verification required
Supported access
Sync’s official page says the service is available on Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, and in a browser. That combination suits households and teams that do not share one device ecosystem.
Privacy statements
Sync describes its service as end-to-end encrypted and says it does not track, share, or sell app-usage data. These are vendor claims; no independent security audit or performance test is established here. Treat the claims as one input in a broader privacy review, including the account-recovery model and the sharing features you require.
Pricing limitation
A dependable current US consumer-plan price was not captured from the page used for this comparison. Check the live offer for your country, billing period, storage amount, and renewal terms before comparing Sync.com directly with a priced plan from another provider.
Microsoft 365: the value benchmark many switchers overlook
US prices listed by Microsoft
| Plan | Storage | Monthly price | Annual price | Included value |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft 365 Basic | 100 GB | $1.99 | $19.99 | Storage-focused subscription |
| Microsoft 365 Personal | 1 TB | $9.99 | $99.99 | Microsoft 365 applications plus cloud storage |
These are the figures on Microsoft’s US page at the 2026 check. They are not a worldwide price guarantee.
Best Value
- Plug-and-play expandability
- SuperSpeed USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps)
Why retain it in the comparison
If you use Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or other included Microsoft 365 applications, moving to a storage-only service may remove value you are already paying for. Compare the complete subscription cost with the cost of replacing those applications separately. Conversely, if you never use the apps, evaluate the 1 TB allowance against a storage-only plan rather than assuming the bundle is automatically cheaper.
When switching is still sensible
A different provider can make sense if your household is centered on Google or Apple services, if cross-platform sharing is the main requirement, or if a provider-stated encryption model outweighs Microsoft application integration. Make that decision after listing which Microsoft applications, files, and sharing links would need replacements.
How to migrate without losing files
1. Inventory your current account
- Record the total file size, largest folders, shared folders, photos, and files stored outside the normal OneDrive directory.
- List every device, application, automation, and shared link that reads or writes those files.
- Check whether email, photos, or family members consume a shared quota in the destination service.
2. Choose a destination and preserve an independent copy
Select the provider whose device support, quota model, privacy terms, and recovery policy match the inventory. Before deleting anything, keep a separate copy of irreplaceable documents and photos on storage you control. Cloud synchronization alone is not a complete backup because deletions and corruption can propagate.
3. Start with a pilot folder
- Create a small test set containing documents, photos, a large file, a shared item, and a file with a long or unusual name.
- Upload it to the new service and install the required desktop or mobile apps.
- Open, edit, rename, share, and restore the test files from each device you use.
- Check available quota after any mail or photo data is connected.
4. Move data in batches
Copy one top-level folder at a time, then compare item counts and representative file sizes with the source. Keep the original account available while the transfer runs. Large libraries can expose filename, path-length, unsupported-file, or bandwidth limits; resolve those exceptions instead of assuming a completed upload means every file arrived.
5. Rebuild sharing and integrations
Shared links generally belong to the old provider. Create new links, update collaborators, and replace links embedded in documents, websites, or messages. Reconnect photo backups, desktop sync folders, and office applications only after the destination copy is verified.
6. Cancel only after a retention check
Keep the old account active through at least one normal billing and editing cycle, or longer if you need its recovery history. Confirm that all required files open, collaborators have access, and your independent backup is readable before reducing the old plan or deleting data.
Decision checklist
- Already use Gmail, Drive, and Google Photos? Start with Google One and calculate the combined quota.
- Most household devices are Apple products? Compare iCloud+ family sharing and the storage needed for device backups and photos.
- Need straightforward mixed-device sync and recent deletion recovery? Examine Dropbox’s individual Standard terms.
- Want provider-stated end-to-end encryption? Compare Proton Drive and Sync.com, while treating their security language as provider claims and checking the live price.
- Use Microsoft 365 applications every week? Price the bundle before moving to storage-only service.
- Need a true backup? Add a separate backup copy regardless of which cloud service you select.
- Need a firm price comparison? Normalize monthly versus annual billing, currency, taxes, promotions, and family or team terms first.
Limits of the published comparisons
The prices and quotas above are provider-listed snapshots checked in 2026, primarily in US dollars where a currency was shown. Offers can change with geography, taxes, promotional periods, and billing cadence. The cited pages are not a uniform benchmark: they do not provide a shared test of upload speed, migration success, collaboration quality, or independent security. Use the pilot-folder procedure to validate the features that matter to your files before committing your only copy.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe Bottom Line
The best alternative is the one that matches your existing devices and services, gives you enough usable quota after shared data is counted, and has recovery and privacy terms you understand. Decide from that checklist rather than from storage capacity alone.
