Runpod and Lambda are the most practical Nebius alternatives for self-serve GPU work. Runpod covers flexible Pods, API inference through Serverless, and multi-node Clusters, while Lambda offers one-to-eight-GPU instances and reserved 1-Click Clusters. For Kubernetes-led, very large deployments, evaluate CoreWeave; for teams already standardized on a major cloud, AWS, Google Cloud, or Azure may reduce integration work. The right choice depends on the exact GPU configuration, workload type, billing granularity, network fabric, capacity, and procurement model—not on the name “H100” alone.

What to compare before leaving Nebius

A hosted GPU is not a commodity priced only by model. An H100 PCIe instance, an H100 SXM server, and an HGX H100 platform can have different memory topology, host CPUs, storage, networking, and scaling behavior. A one-GPU development machine is also a different product from an eight-GPU server or a reserved, interconnected cluster.

Use the following sequence for an apples-to-apples decision:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Define the job. Separate interactive development and fine-tuning, batch processing, always-on inference, and distributed training.
  2. Record the complete SKU. Write down GPU variant (PCIe, SXM, HGX or another platform), GPU memory, GPU count, host memory, local or attached storage, region, and networking.
  3. Match the service form. Compare a Pod or virtual machine with another Pod or virtual machine; compare a serverless endpoint with another serverless product; compare a reserved cluster with another reserved cluster.
  4. Calculate the real run cost. Include GPU time, storage, data transfer, idle time, taxes, and any reservation commitment.
  5. Check capacity and operations. Verify that the exact configuration is available in the required region and that the provider supports your image, scheduler, interconnect, and support expectations.

Runpod: the flexible self-serve replacement

What it offers

Runpod describes Pods as dedicated GPU environments in which you control the container, storage, GPU type, and runtime. That makes them suitable for interactive development, model training, fine-tuning, batch jobs, and long-running processes. The same platform separates Pods from Serverless, an API-oriented inference option, and Clusters for multi-node jobs.

This separation matters operationally. A Pod leaves you responsible for the server process, scaling logic, health checks, and deployment lifecycle. Serverless shifts more of the endpoint and scaling workflow into an inference product. A Cluster is intended for jobs that require multiple connected nodes rather than several unrelated single-GPU machines.

Published price points

The Runpod pricing page updated October 8, 2026 lists these hourly figures:

GPU configuration Published price How to interpret it
H100 PCIe $2.89 per hour Single displayed rate for the listed H100 PCIe product; confirm product and availability tier before launching
H100 SXM $3.99 per hour Different hardware form from H100 PCIe, so it is not a like-for-like comparison with the $2.89 figure
H200 $5.29 per hour Displayed rate for the listed H200 product; region, storage, and availability can affect checkout cost

The product page states that GPU rental is billed by the second. That granularity can reduce rounding waste for short jobs, but charges continue while the resource is running. Stop or terminate idle Pods, and check whether attached storage or other services continue billing after the GPU is stopped.

When Runpod is a strong choice

  • You need to start a container quickly without negotiating a reserved cluster.
  • Your workload alternates between development, training, and batch jobs.
  • You want the option to expose inference through an API-oriented Serverless product later.
  • You need multiple nodes but still want a self-serve path through a Cluster product.

Questions to answer before deployment

  • Is the exact PCIe, SXM, or H200 configuration available in your target region now?
  • Does the selected Pod or Cluster provide the interconnect and topology your distributed framework expects?
  • What are the separate prices for persistent volume storage, snapshots, egress, and idle allocations?
  • Which interruption, maintenance, or capacity terms apply to the availability tier you selected?

Lambda: instances for small jobs and reserved clusters for scale

Two distinct products

Lambda describes pay-as-you-go instances with one to eight GPUs and a separate 1-Click Cluster offering for larger interconnected workloads. The distinction is central: an eight-GPU instance is not automatically equivalent to a multi-node cluster with a high-speed fabric, and a cluster reservation is not priced like an hourly on-demand machine.

Lambda’s billing documentation says on-demand instances are priced hourly and billed in one-minute increments. Billing continues while an instance runs. Its 1-Click Cluster terms apply to the reservation rather than to the minute-by-minute lifecycle of an ordinary instance.

Published Lambda rates

Product and configuration Published price Commitment context
H100 SXM on-demand instance $3.99 per GPU-hour On-demand instance pricing; billed in one-minute increments while running
H100 cluster, 16 GPUs $6.16 per GPU-hour Multi-week 1-Click Cluster pricing; reservation terms apply
H100 cluster, 64 GPUs $5.85 per GPU-hour Multi-week 1-Click Cluster pricing; reservation terms apply

The cluster figures are not directly interchangeable with the $3.99 on-demand instance rate. A reserved cluster can include interconnected hardware and a committed period that changes both capability and utilization risk.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When Lambda fits

  • You want a familiar self-serve instance with one through eight GPUs for experiments or fine-tuning.
  • Your training plan needs a predefined, interconnected multi-node environment.
  • You can keep a reserved cluster busy for the reservation period and have a schedule that justifies the commitment.

Lambda checks before committing

  1. Confirm whether the quoted number is per GPU-hour or a complete instance-hour total.
  2. For a cluster, confirm the minimum reservation length, cancellation terms, node count, and interconnect.
  3. Validate framework images, driver and CUDA compatibility, scheduler access, and storage throughput with a small job.
  4. Estimate utilization. A lower effective rate is not economical if the cluster sits idle during gaps in the training calendar.

CoreWeave: a lead for Kubernetes-centric clusters

A provider-authored technical comparison checked against provider documentation on October 5, 2026 characterizes CoreWeave as Kubernetes-oriented and aimed at very large-scale deployments. That makes it a candidate when your team already operates Kubernetes, needs repeatable cluster orchestration, or expects to grow beyond ad hoc instances.

The available comparison does not establish a complete current price list, universal GPU availability, supported cluster sizes, or service-level terms. Treat CoreWeave as a shortlist lead, not as a price winner. Before procurement, request the exact SKU, region, network topology, storage path, quota, support plan, and Kubernetes integration details for your workload.

Choose this path when

  • Your deployment process is already expressed as Kubernetes manifests and operators.
  • You need repeatable scheduling and cluster lifecycle automation rather than a manually managed machine.
  • Your organization has procurement and support requirements better served by a large-scale cloud relationship.

Be cautious when

  • You only need one GPU for a short experiment and would pay for cluster-oriented complexity.
  • Your team does not have Kubernetes expertise or an existing operational model.
  • The required GPU or region has not been confirmed in writing.

Hyperscalers: the integration-first alternative

AWS, Google Cloud, and Azure belong in the decision when your data, identity, networking, logging, and billing already live in one of those ecosystems. The benefit is less architectural translation: existing virtual networks, object storage, IAM, monitoring, reservations, and enterprise support can be reused.

The trade-off is that the GPU rate is only one line in a larger bill. Region, machine family, attached disks, inter-zone traffic, public egress, support, committed-use discounts, and quota availability can materially change the result. The provider comparison reports different approaches to cluster networking, billing, and orchestration, but it does not replace a SKU-level quote.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a hyperscaler when

  • Your training data already resides there and moving it would incur time, egress, or governance cost.
  • Security controls require existing IAM, private networking, audit logs, or enterprise support.
  • You need managed services around the GPU job, such as queues, registries, data pipelines, or observability.

Do not assume integration makes it cheaper

Model the complete workflow. A lower-looking GPU rate can be outweighed by storage, cross-zone traffic, egress, or an instance that must remain allocated while data preparation runs. Conversely, reusing existing commitments and avoiding data movement can make a hyperscaler economical even when its advertised GPU price is not the lowest.

Nebius baseline: use the exact HGX configuration

Nebius lists NVIDIA HGX H100 at $4.50 per GPU-hour and NVIDIA HGX H200 at $5.40 per GPU-hour. It also lists HGX B200 at $8.50 and HGX B300 at $9.50 per GPU-hour. These are list-price figures for the stated HGX products, not universal prices for every H100 or H200 machine.

Nebius notes that spot or preemptible prices vary with available capacity, utilization, demand, and customer pricing preferences, and that listed prices can change. Record whether your quote is on-demand, spot, or preemptible, and document the interruption behavior before using it for a long training run.

Published GPU Price per GPU-hour Configuration qualifier
NVIDIA HGX H100 $4.50 HGX platform, not an unspecified H100 PCIe or SXM server
NVIDIA HGX H200 $5.40 HGX platform; verify region and current availability
NVIDIA HGX B200 $8.50 HGX platform
NVIDIA HGX B300 $9.50 HGX platform

Why the headline price can mislead

GPU labels hide system differences

PCIe and SXM versions can differ in host design and interconnect context. HGX denotes a platform with its own system and topology assumptions. Memory capacity, CPU-to-GPU paths, NVLink or other fabric details, and the number of GPUs in the node can affect whether a workload fits and how it scales. Always put the complete configuration beside the price in your comparison sheet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Billing granularity changes short-job economics

Runpod’s stated per-second GPU billing and Lambda’s one-minute increments produce different rounding behavior for brief tasks. Neither removes the need to stop resources. A notebook left running overnight can cost more than the model training itself, regardless of the nominal hourly rate.

Reservations trade flexibility for predictability

An on-demand instance can be started and stopped around experiments. A multi-week cluster reservation can provide planned capacity and a connected topology, but unused hours remain a financial risk. Compare expected utilization, not just the reserved rate.

Capacity is a live variable

Inventory changes by region and product. A rate visible on a pricing page may not correspond to an available machine at launch time, and a spot or preemptible rate can move with demand. Check the actual launch screen or obtain a written quote immediately before committing.

A practical selection workflow

Step 1: classify the workload

  • Interactive development: favor rapid provisioning, persistent storage, and minute- or second-level billing.
  • Fine-tuning or batch jobs: prioritize the required memory, checkpoint storage, restart behavior, and total job cost.
  • Online inference: compare serverless API behavior, cold starts, concurrency controls, autoscaling, and egress—not only GPU-hour pricing.
  • Distributed training: require a documented interconnect, node topology, scheduler, and failure-recovery plan.

Step 2: make a configuration card

Write one line your vendors must answer: GPU model and variant, GPU memory, GPU count, host RAM, local disk, persistent volume, region, network fabric, driver/CUDA baseline, and expected runtime. Reject quotes that omit a field that can change performance or cost.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 3: run a small acceptance test

  1. Launch the smallest environment with the intended image and dependencies.
  2. Verify GPU visibility, memory, driver and CUDA versions, storage mount, and network access.
  3. Run a representative data-loading and checkpointing cycle.
  4. For multi-GPU work, run the actual communication library and a short distributed step, not only a single-GPU benchmark.
  5. Stop and restart the resource to confirm persistence, billing behavior, and recovery.

This is an operational acceptance test, not an independent performance benchmark. It tells you whether the selected configuration works for your software and workflow.

Step 4: model monthly cost

Use: GPU rate × GPU count × billable hours + storage + transfer + ancillary services + taxes. For a reservation, replace billable hours with the committed schedule and add the cost of unused capacity. For an interruptible product, include checkpointing and expected restart time in the economic model.

Step 5: verify support and procurement

Ask who handles quota increases, hardware faults, image failures, networking incidents, and billing disputes. A self-serve product may be ideal for an individual engineer but unsuitable where your organization requires a contract, purchase order, response-time commitment, or data-processing terms.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Distributed training: network and orchestration are first-class requirements

Once a job spans nodes, the interconnect can dominate scaling efficiency. Compare GPU-to-GPU and node-to-node communication, topology, bandwidth and latency claims, supported collective libraries, and whether the provider exposes the fabric directly. A collection of inexpensive independent GPUs is not a substitute for an interconnected cluster when synchronization is frequent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Orchestration also changes the operating model. The provider comparison identifies differences involving Slurm, Ray, and Kubernetes support. Confirm which scheduler is available on the exact product, whether you can bring your own image and operators, how jobs are queued, and how failed nodes are replaced. Do not infer these details from a provider’s general cloud branding.

Cluster questions for a vendor

  • What GPU count and node shapes can be allocated together?
  • Is the interconnect reserved for the job or shared?
  • Which Slurm, Ray, or Kubernetes integration is supported and maintained?
  • What happens when one node fails during a checkpoint interval?
  • Can the cluster be expanded, reduced, or released early under the reservation terms?
  • Are storage and data-transfer charges separate from the GPU reservation?

Common failure modes and fixes

You compared unlike H100 products

Symptom: one quote says H100 PCIe, another says H100 SXM, and a third says HGX H100. Fix: normalize variant, memory, node size, and interconnect before comparing rates. If a field is unknown, mark it as not stated and request clarification.

The instance is affordable but the job is slow

Symptom: GPU utilization is low or distributed scaling is poor. Fix: inspect data-loader throughput, CPU and storage bottlenecks, placement, and communication overhead. A cheaper GPU-hour can produce a higher cost per completed training run.

A stopped machine still generates charges

Symptom: the GPU is stopped but the invoice continues. Fix: inspect persistent volumes, reserved IPs, snapshots, cluster commitments, and any minimum allocation policy. Terminate resources you no longer need and export required data first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Capacity disappears at launch

Symptom: the listed GPU or region is unavailable. Fix: maintain at least one validated fallback SKU or region, confirm quotas in advance, and avoid promising delivery dates based solely on a public price page.

An interruptible run loses progress

Symptom: a spot or preemptible instance is reclaimed. Fix: checkpoint to durable storage at a known interval, test restart logic, and compare the expected interruption cost with on-demand capacity for deadline-sensitive jobs.

Decision guide

Your priority First provider path to investigate Why
Fast, self-serve single-GPU or small multi-GPU work Runpod Pods or Lambda on-demand instances Both publish self-serve instance products; compare exact SKU, region, and billing granularity
API-oriented inference Runpod Serverless or a hyperscaler managed endpoint These are endpoint products rather than manually operated training machines; compare scaling and egress terms
Planned multi-node H100 training Lambda 1-Click Cluster, Runpod Cluster, or a hyperscaler cluster service Reservation, interconnect, scheduler, and support terms matter more than a single-GPU rate
Kubernetes-led, very large deployment CoreWeave or an existing hyperscaler relationship Cluster orchestration and enterprise operations may outweigh self-serve simplicity
Existing data and identity in one cloud The matching hyperscaler Avoiding data movement and reusing controls can reduce total project cost

Bottom line for Nebius shoppers

Start with Runpod when you want the broadest self-serve choice across Pods, Serverless, and Clusters. Start with Lambda when a one-to-eight-GPU instance or a planned 1-Click Cluster matches your workflow and reservation horizon. Put CoreWeave on the shortlist for Kubernetes-oriented, large-scale deployments, and use AWS, Google Cloud, or Azure when integration with an existing cloud estate is the deciding factor.

Use Nebius’s HGX prices only as a configuration-specific baseline: $4.50 per GPU-hour for HGX H100 and $5.40 for HGX H200, with additional listed B200 and B300 rates. The defensible choice comes from matching hardware, service type, billing unit, interconnect, capacity, and total workload cost at the moment you buy—not from declaring a provider universally cheapest.
