Use the Duo simulator first. It is the only option described here that directly exposes the Duo project’s own community app catalog without buying a foldable phone. It runs as a web page or desktop window and simulates two displays, a movable hinge, a home screen and catalog-installed apps.
Two other paths serve different goals: an experimental Android launcher recreates an iPhone Duo-like home-screen layout on compatible foldables, while Apple’s iPhone Duo runs native iOS apps and changes their layout according to the SDK used to build them. These are not interchangeable. The simulator is for the Duo community’s web apps; the launcher is a community layout experiment; iPhone Duo is Apple’s hardware and operating-system implementation.
Which alternative fits your goal?
“Alternative” can mean avoiding the iPhone Duo’s price, trying the Duo community catalog, or previewing a two-screen foldable interface. Decide which of those you actually need before choosing hardware.
| Option | What runs | Hardware commitment | What it reproduces | Availability and support |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Duo browser or desktop simulator | Duo project’s catalog of small web applications | None beyond a browser or computer | Two displays, a movable hinge, home screen and catalog workflow | Community project; apps arrive through reviewed contributions |
| Android foldable launcher experiment | Android apps and a custom launcher layout | Compatible Android foldable, primarily tested by its author on a Galaxy Fold8 | A vertical dock and folded/unfolded home-screen arrangements inspired by iPhone Duo | Experimental beta; broad compatibility, commercial availability and ongoing support are not established |
| iPhone Duo | Native iOS apps | Apple’s dedicated foldable phone | Apple’s actual displays, hinge behavior and iOS windowing | Apple hardware and software; app behavior depends on SDK version |
| Alternative iPhone app distribution | Apps offered through eligible marketplaces or developer web distribution | An eligible iPhone, account and physical location | Different app-install sources, not the Duo catalog or foldable interface | Region- and eligibility-dependent; Apple limits support for apps obtained outside the App Store |
There is no evidence that the simulator’s catalog apps install natively on Android or iOS, and no evidence that the Android launcher runs iOS software. Treat each as a separate ecosystem.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
1. The Duo simulator: the direct way to try the community catalog
The Duo project’s simulator is the strongest choice when your question is, “What has this community built?” Open it as a web page or desktop window and you get a software representation of the Duo environment rather than a physical phone. The interface includes two displays, a hinge that can be moved, a home screen and an app catalog.
What the simulator installs
The project describes its apps as small web applications written with TypeScript and React. They are compiled into a single HTML document and installed from the catalog. That architecture explains both the low hardware requirement and the limitation: you are loading web-based Duo applications inside the simulator, not launching arbitrary native iOS binaries.
How community apps reach the catalog
Official apps ship in the simulator. Community apps are submitted as pull requests, and the project says contributions are reviewed before appearing in the Duo Store. The project also describes the apps as MIT licensed. Review and licensing make the catalog more curated than an arbitrary download folder, but they do not guarantee that every contribution is maintained, secure or suitable for every use.
Step-by-step: try an app without buying a phone
- Open the Duo simulator in a modern browser, or use its desktop-window form if you prefer a separate application window.
- Use the simulated home screen to locate the app catalog.
- Browse the catalog and select an app. The simulator’s catalog is the distribution path for this ecosystem; do not expect an iOS App Store listing.
- Install the selected entry from the catalog and return to the home screen.
- Move the simulated hinge and switch between the two displays while using the app. This is useful for seeing how the app responds to the fold position, even though the result is still a simulation.
- If an app is missing, check whether it has been accepted into the catalog. A community project can have code available for contribution without that code being published as a catalog app.
What fidelity you should expect
The simulator can show the project’s intended two-display interaction and hinge input, but it cannot reproduce the weight, screen latency, brightness, touch hardware or battery behavior of a physical foldable. Its purpose is app exploration and interface experimentation. It is not an iPhone, an iOS runtime or a compatibility layer for native iOS software.
2. An Android foldable with the experimental Duo-inspired launcher
A community developer has reported an iPhone Duo-inspired Android launcher with a vertical dock and separate layouts for folded and unfolded screens. The author says the launcher is an experimental beta and was primarily tested on a Galaxy Fold8. On other devices, the layout may behave differently.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
What this option does
The launcher changes the Android home-screen experience. It can help you explore how a dock, fold state and expanded canvas might work in daily use. It does not turn Android into iOS, does not provide Apple’s system frameworks and does not establish that Duo simulator applications run natively on the phone.
What is not established
- General compatibility across Android foldables is not established by the single community report.
- Commercial availability, a long-term maintenance plan and a support commitment are not stated.
- The report does not show that the Duo project’s catalog can be installed as native Android applications.
- Performance, battery impact, accessibility and security have not been independently benchmarked.
How to evaluate it safely
- Confirm that your foldable supports the Android version and launcher-installation method required by the project.
- Back up your current launcher layout and important data before changing the default home application.
- Install only the build distributed by the developer through a channel you can verify, and review the permissions it requests.
- Set it as the default launcher temporarily rather than replacing your existing setup permanently.
- Test folded and unfolded states, rotation, app launching, notification access, keyboard behavior and returning to the stock launcher.
- Remove it if it causes crashes, excessive battery drain or broken navigation. Because the project is beta software, keep a recovery path available.
This is a reasonable experiment for owners of compatible Android foldables who want the layout idea. It is not a substitute for the Duo simulator when your goal is the community catalog.

3. iPhone Duo: the native iOS reference point
If you want to know how Apple’s own foldable handles ordinary iOS software, iPhone Duo is the relevant device. Apple’s 2026 announcement lists a U.S. starting price of $1,999. That is a manufacturer-published launch figure, not a current retailer quote. The same announcement advertises up to 31 hours of video playback on the inner display and up to 44 hours on the outer display; those are Apple’s figures, not independent test results.
Apple also says iPhone Duo is eSIM-only worldwide and that eSIM is supported by more than 500 carriers. Actual service still depends on carrier support and the user’s country.
How SDK versions change the layout
Apple says every app will run on iPhone Duo, but the amount of the inner display an app uses depends on the SDK with which it was built:

| Build target | Apple’s described behavior on the open display |
|---|---|
| iOS 26 SDK or earlier | A familiar centered-size window appears on the open display. |
| iOS 27 SDK | The app resizes to fill most of the inner display. |
| iOS 27.1 or later | The app is described as optimized for the full display, with toolbars and tab bars vertical below the status bar. |
Apple Developer summarizes the policy this way: “While all apps will run on iPhone Duo, building with the latest SDKs let your app use more of the display and adapt gracefully across layouts.” The practical lesson is that “runs” does not mean “fills the screen elegantly.” Developers control the adaptation through their SDK and interface work.

Multitasking features Apple highlights
Apple’s announcement describes Split View for two apps side by side, app pairs and multiple windows of the same app. It names Netflix and Slack as examples of third-party apps taking advantage of the folding design. Those are Apple’s stated capabilities and examples, not independent evaluations of every app or workflow.
4. Alternative app distribution on iPhone
Changing where an app comes from is a different problem from trying a foldable interface. Apple Support says alternative distribution depends on eligibility, account conditions and physical location.
Regions Apple lists
- Brazil and Japan: Apple lists alternative marketplaces on iPhone for users who meet the applicable country, account and physical-location requirements.
- European Union: Apple lists alternative marketplaces on iPhone and iPad, plus developer web distribution, for eligible users in the EU.
Availability can change, and an Apple Support page accessed from Canada presents these rules by region. Check Apple’s current guidance for your location before changing your installation method.
Installation and support trade-offs
Apple’s installation guidance explains the setup flow and eligibility checks. Apps distributed outside the App Store may have different update, payment and refund paths. Apple states that its support for such apps is limited: questions about support, privacy, security, purchases and refunds may need to go to the marketplace or the developer.

Alternative distribution is therefore not a universal route to the Duo project’s catalog. It can make a particular app available in an eligible region, but it does not recreate the simulator’s two-screen home screen or prove that a community web app has an iOS build.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choosing by the experience you want
Choose the simulator when the catalog is the priority
Use the browser or desktop simulator if you want the lowest-cost, lowest-risk way to browse and run the Duo project’s community-built applications. You need no foldable phone, and the project’s catalog and hinge model are available immediately. Accept that the applications are web apps in a simulator and that catalog inclusion depends on project review.
Choose the Android launcher experiment when the home screen is the priority
Use the experimental launcher only if you already have a compatible Android foldable and want to test a vertical dock and folded/unfolded layouts. Its value is visual and interaction-oriented. Do not buy a foldable solely on the assumption that the launcher will work: the author primarily tested one Fold8, and behavior elsewhere is uncertain.
Choose iPhone Duo when native iOS behavior is the priority
iPhone Duo is the only option here that gives you Apple’s actual hardware and native iOS environment. It is also the most expensive path, with Apple’s announced $1,999 U.S. starting price. You gain Apple’s display adaptation, Split View, app pairs and multiple windows, but app quality still varies with SDK adoption.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Confusing a simulator with an emulator
The Duo project describes a simulator for its web applications. It is not an iOS emulator and cannot be used as a general native-iPhone test environment. Use it to explore catalog apps and interaction concepts, not to validate App Store binaries.
Assuming a foldable launcher supplies community apps
A launcher controls the home screen. It does not automatically include the Duo catalog. Keep the launcher experiment and simulator as separate installations and separate expectations.
Treating “all apps run” as “all apps are optimized”
Apple’s compatibility statement covers execution on iPhone Duo. The SDK table explains why an older app may remain in a centered window while a newer build uses the inner display more effectively.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIgnoring regional distribution rules
Alternative marketplaces and developer web distribution are eligibility-based. A user outside the listed regions, or one who does not meet Apple’s account and location checks, may not see the same options. Do not sideload an app merely because someone in another country can install it.
Using beta software without a rollback plan
Before testing the Android launcher, preserve your existing launcher, back up data and verify how to restore the default. A beta layout experiment can affect navigation and notifications even when the underlying Android apps remain intact.
A practical decision checklist
- Do you specifically want apps from the Duo project’s catalog? Start with the simulator.
- Do you only want to see a two-screen home-screen arrangement on Android? Consider the experimental launcher, with the Fold8 testing limitation in mind.
- Do you need native iOS apps, Apple’s multitasking and real foldable hardware? Only iPhone Duo addresses that combination.
- Are you trying to obtain one particular app outside the App Store? Check Apple’s eligibility rules and the developer’s support terms first.
- Do you need independent battery, performance or compatibility data? None of the cited material provides a controlled comparative test.
What the evidence can and cannot establish
The simulator’s capabilities and catalog process come from the Duo project’s own descriptions. The Android launcher information comes from one community developer’s report and should not be generalized beyond its stated beta status and primary Fold8 testing. Apple’s device behavior, pricing, battery figures and distribution policies are Apple’s published claims. No independent comparative benchmark or controlled hands-on test establishes that one option is faster, safer or more reliable than the others.
For most readers, that evidence leads to a simple order of operations: try the Duo simulator first; test the Android launcher only when you already own suitable foldable hardware; consider iPhone Duo when native iOS and Apple’s hardware matter enough to justify the $1,999 starting price; and treat alternative distribution as a region-specific installation choice rather than a Duo replacement.
